Whatmakesnosoundandcannotsee?Oftenlivesfordecades,butseldommovesfromasecurespot?Causingastir,makinguspondertheirfutureaswellasourown?Theanswertothisriddleisfreshwatermussels!Nearlythreehundredspeciesofnativefreshwatermussels(alsocalledunionids)liveintheUnitedStates,withmorethan50ofthemfoundinTexas.Yetnearly70%oftheknownspeciesareextinct,endangered,orinneedofspecialprotection,largelyduetothechangesthathaveoccurredintheirecosysteminthelast200years. Living buried in the sand and gravel at thebottom of river and streams, with a fewadaptedtothequietwatersoflakesandponds,freshwatermusselsarefilterfeeders.Theydrawtheirfoodtothembysiphoningwaterintotheirshellsandusingtheirgillstofilteroutalgaeandsmallparticlesfromthewaterandtotakeinoxygen.Althoughfreshwatermusselshave a muscular ‘foot’, they don’tmove verymuchbutuse this foottoburrowintothemudorprovidelimitedtravelifdisturbedbydroughtsorfloods. Freshwatermusselsareprotectedfrompredatorsbyahard,calcium-basedshellconsistingoftwohalvesjoinedbyahinge.Thin-shelledspeciesliveonaverage4to10years,whilethick-shelledspeciescanlive20to40yearsormore.Withcolorfulcommonnamesincludingtermslikefloater,pocketbook, fatmucket, pimpleback, pistol grip, and washboard,Texas unionids were often named after items that resembled theshapesoftheirshells,bythosewhoharvestedthemfortheirpearlsandforuse intheshell-buttonindustry. FifteenspeciesofTexasfreshwatermusselsarenowonthestatethreatenedlist,whichmeanstheyareprotectedandcannotbecollectedorkilled.ThosefoundintheColoradoRiversystemincentralTexasincludetheFalsespike(Quadrulamitchelli),Smoothpimpleback(Quadrulahoustonensis),
Texas fatmucket (Lampsilisbracteata),Texas fawnsfoot (Truncillamacrodon),andtheTexaspimpleback(Quadrulapetrina). Inadditiontotheirunusualcommonnames,thesebivalvesalsohaveaveryunusualreproductivecycle.First,eggsheldinsidethefemaleneedtobefertilizedbyspermreleasedintothewaterfromanearbymale.Theresultingyoungmussels,orglochidia,areinturnreleasedbythefemaleandtemporarilyattachthemselvestoafish’sfins
orgills.Thissoundsliketrickybusiness,anditis!Femalemusselshaveevolvedtoattractcertainspeciesofhostfishbyusing
insect, worm and fish-shaped lures – tissue-basedextensionsoftheirbodies–developedtobringthe
fishincloseenoughforthedispersedglochidiatoattach.Duringthisharmlessparasitic
stage, the glochidia grow into tinymusselsandwithinafewweeksdropfromthefishanddowntotheriverbottomorstreambedtomatureandcontinuethecycle. Sadly, there are many reasons
for thedeclineof freshwatermusselpopulationsinTexas,andmostofthemare
man-made. Changes in the natural flow ofriversandstreamsduetodamsandlakeconstruction,
increaseddepositionofsiltduetorunoffcausedbytheclearingofindigenousvegetation,introductionofaquaticcontaminantsandexoticplantspecies,andthelackofnativefishhostsareafewofthosereasonscontributingtothedecline. Freshwatermusselsareanimportantindicatorofthevitalityofouraquaticecosystems. Healthypopulationswouldreflectmorepure,cleanwaterforhumansaswellasmanyotheraquaticplantsandanimals! Pour cooked potatoes into a lightly greased 8 x 10” baking dish.
cook the following in ¼ lb. margarine or butter until tender:1smallonion,chopped1greenpepper,chopped3stalkscelery,chopped
add the following to cooked vegetables:1cancreamofmushroomsoup
1smallcanevaporatedmilk½lb.Velveetacheese1smalljarpimentos
Sprinkle with parsley if desired. Stir until cheese melts and pour over potatoes. Bake in 350 degree oven until bubbly.

Intheinvestmentworld,therearen’tmanycertainties,buthere’soneofthem:priceswillalwaysgoupanddown.Asanindividualinvestor,youcan’tdoanythingabout thisvolatility.But thewayyourespondtoitcouldmakeabigdifferenceinyour long-terminvestmentsuccess. Manyinvestorsthinktheycan“beat”volatilitybytryingtotimethemarket—inotherwords,bybuyingwhenpricesarelowandsellingwhenpricesarehigh.Intheory,thisisanexcellentstrategy,butinreality,it’sprettymuchimpossibletofollow—becausenoonecanreallypredict,withanyaccuracy,markethighsandlows.Soinsteadofattemptingtotimethemarket,you’remuchbetteroffbyfollowingatime-testedstrategyknownassystematicinvesting. To systematically invest, you simply put the same amount ofmoneyintothesameinvestmentsatregularintervals.Toillustrate,you could put $100, $500, $1000 or more intoInvestmentXonthefirstofeverymonth.Tomakeiteveneasieronyourself,youcouldautomatically transfer those dollars fromyourbankaccountdirectlyintotheinvestmentyou’vechosen. In all likelihood, your contribution will buya different amount of shares of Investment Xeach month. For example, if Investment Xsells for $100 per share in January, a$500 investment will buy five shares.In February, if the price has fallen to$50pershare,your$500willbuy10shares. •Lower cost of investing —Throughsystematicinvesting,your cost per share likely will be lower than if you madesporadiclumpsuminvestments.Andbyloweringthecostofinvesting,youwill,ineffecthavethepotentialtoboostyourreturns.
Whilesystematicinvestingistypicallyagoodwaytofighttheeffectsofvolatility,itcan’tguaranteeaprofitorprevent

upanddownmarkets. But if you have that ability, consider

butclearlythereisalink.Numerousstudieshaveshownavarietyof connections, such as increases in asthma-related emergencydepartmentvisitswhencertainweatherconditionsarepresent.Somepeoplefindthattheirasthmasymptomsgetworseatspecifictimesofyear.Forothers,aseverestormorsuddenweatherchangemaytriggeranattack.
Exposure tocold,dryair isacommonasthmatriggerandcanquicklycauseseveresymptoms.Peoplewithexercise-inducedasthmawhoparticipateinwintersportsareespeciallysusceptible.Dry,windyweathercanstiruppollenandmoldintheair,leadingtoproblemsforsomepeople.
Hot,humidairalsocantriggerasthmasymptoms,andwetweatherencouragesthegrowthofmoldspores,anotherasthmatrigger.Incertainareas,heatandsunlightcombinewithpollutantstocreate
ground-levelozone,whichisalsoanasthmatrigger.Studieshaveshownthatthunderstormscantriggerasthmaattacks.
One study showed thatduring thunderstorms, thedailynumberofemergencydepartmentvisitsforasthmaincreasedby15%.Thestudy concluded that theproblemwas causedby thenumberoffungalsporesintheair,whichalmostdoubled.Itwasn’train,butthewind,thatcausedthisincrease.Changesinbarometricpressuremayalsobeanasthmatrigger.Avoiding Allergy Triggers
Ifyoususpectweatherisplayingaroleinyourchild’sasthma,keepadiaryofasthmasymptomsandpossibletriggersandtalktoyourchild’sdoctor.Onceyouknowwhatkindofweathertriggersasthmasymptoms,youcantakestepstoprotectyourchild:• Watchtheforecastforpollenandmoldcountsaswellasotherconditions
(extremecoldorheat)thatmightaffectyourchild'sasthma.
