Meet Your HOA Board!

My name is Mark Ayotte and I am one of your Meadows HOA board members. My family and I have lived in the Meadows for fourteen years and love it! This is my second time to serve on the board.  The first was about eight years ago and I rejoined in 2012.  I also serve as the Meadows representative on the Brushy Creek MUD Parks Committee. My wife and I have four children, two of whom still live with us and are in high school. When I’m not working on my internet business I am either volunteering at a local food pantry, spending time with the family or playing softball.

Kill Germs with a Cell Phone?

Yes, you really can. This is not another app, it’s a physical surface treatment.

One application of a Long-Term Antimicrobial solution on high-touch personal devices like cell phones, remote controls, keyboards and door knobs will kill all viruses and dangerous microbes that they come in contact with, for months. A single treatment will kill the common cold virus, influenza, bronchitis, croup, pneumonia, E. coli, Streptomyces (strep throat), meningitis, mononucleosis, Staphylococcus, ringworm and thousands of other nasty viruses and microbes.

Every day high-touch devices in the home are exposed to millions of germs brought in by family members from their daily travels, guests, pets and even the wind. Long-Term Antimicrobial treated surfaces will physically kill these germs on contact, notably reducing the health risk to anyone using these devices.

How this proven technology works is actually quite simple; the active chemical in this solution physically bonds to the surface of almost any personal device. At a nano level this new layer of molecules will physically puncture and electrocute all dangerous microbes they come in contact with. There are several good videos that show how this technology works on the website: LongTermAntimicrobial.com. Also on that site is an overview of this extraordinary technology along with links to the websites of the major global players in the industry.

“Long-Term Antimicrobial solutions have been available to hospitals, educational facilities, the hospitality industry and others for over 20 years. Only recently has this technology been available to the general public,” said Heather S. Wilson, Microbiology Consultant to CleanerStuff.com, a reseller of Long-Term Antimicrobial solutions. “If the high-touch devices in your home are actively killing dangerous viruses and microbes 24-hours a day your family’s exposure to potential illnesses are significantly reduced.”

Viruses Still Present During the Summer

Many viruses are still frequent in the summer so good hygiene remains important

Some viruses present in the summer include:

-Enteroviruses can cause symptoms such as sore throat and diarrhea, and can even lead to viral meningitis and inflammation of the heart and liver.

-Hand, foot and mouth disease, is characterized by ulcers in the back of the throat and a rash on hands and feet. This is common in babies and young children.

-Adenovirus, which can cause respiratory problems.

-Parainfluenza can cause croup, a loud cough; bronchiolitis, swelling and mucus in the small air passages in the lungs; and bronchitis, inflammation of the main air passages to the lungs.

These viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics, but it's important to get enough fluid and rest. Seek treatment immediately for high fever for more than three days, vomiting for over 24 hours, diarrhea, severe headaches or chest pain. Those with weak immune systems should consult their physician if they have any symptoms associated with these viruses.

It Really is a Small World After AllThis past school year has been an eventful one for twenty-two

Houston area Ayusa families. In August 2012, these families opened their hearts and their homes to foreign exchange students from around the world. During the 2012-2013 school year; we had eleven countries represented in our area, some of the countries included were Germany, Brazil, Italy, Lebanon, China, Japan and Tunisia.

The Ayusa foreign exchange student program is a great way to enrich not only the lives of your family members, but that of the folks in your community and the student themselves. “Both my wife and I have been hosting for the past five years and have enjoyed every minute of it!” says Theodore Odom of Pearland, Texas. “My wife and I have no children, so we are able to bring the students in for the full year and be their Host Parents. We believe it’s a way of giving back. This year’s student, Ina Zyfi of Albania has had a great time meeting new people, making new friends and volunteering her time to a local dachshund rescue.”

“We welcome host families of all shapes and sizes – families with young children, families with no children, empty nesters whose children have left home, single parents and non-traditional families,” says Connie Coutu, Regional Manager of Ayusa, a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. “The key requirements for a host family are to provide a safe and nurturing home environment, genuinely love children, and have a desire to learn more about a different culture.”

“Our students really love giving back to the community”, says Heather Wells, the Houston area Senior Regional Director. “One of our students, Nesrine Mbarek of Tunisia, participated in over 300 hours of community service. She was actually one of three students who won a trip for her community service and also attended a US Department of State “Teaching English as a

Second Language” conference in April for her hard work. Other students have worked in food banks and have given presentations on their home countries in their schools.”

T h i s y e a r , A y u s a i s sponsoring over 900 students from 60 different countries in the United States. Volunteer host families are needed in our area to house these students for the 2013-2014 school year. The families need only provide foreign exchange students a nurturing environment, three

meals a day and a bedroom (either private or shared with a host sibling of the same gender). Each host family and student is supported by a professionally trained community representative who works with the family and student for the entire program.

If you are interested in hosting an exchange student, please visit the Ayusa website at www.ayusa.org and complete the on-line application. You can view the students that are available for placement by clicking on the View Student Profiles on the home page. Help make this a memorable year for both your children and the prospective students. You’ll be glad you did!

Spicewood Arts Society’s ‘Season Capriccio”Serves up Concerts, Festival of Fine Art, Art Treks

SAS’ Community Outreach enhances area performing, visual & literary arts

SPICEWOOD, TX (May 15, 2013) – It’s only natural that the Spicewood Arts Society is branding its new 2013-2014 “Season Capriccio.” After all, the nonprofit group shares the same attributes with the musical term: quick, improvisational and spirited.

“We’ve planned another irresistible itinerary of concerts for our new season,” confirmed Martha Norwood, outgoing president of the 13-year-old, nonprofit arts organization whose motto is: “The Home for the Arts in the Hill Country.”

In addition to six regular concerts featuring a broad range of musical artists, the Society is offering its autumn Arts Round-up (Oct. 19-20); a “bonus performance” featuring popular pianist Doug Montgomery on Nov. 15; a fabulous Fourth Annual February Fundraiser for scholarships, and four adventurous Art Treks throughout the year.

“This past season (“Accelerando”) was about stepping up our visibility, our credibility and our community involvement,” Norwood emphasized. “Thanks to our more than 225 loyal members, our generous sponsors and our timely advertisers, we achieved those goals and more.

“With the prospect of their renewed participation and commitment, we will continue to excel and to exceed expectations,” she emphasized. “Indeed, we are rapidly closing in on another sold-out season.”

SAS concerts, typically high energy and high enjoyment, will include:

• Fri., Sept. 20: Singer-songwriter john Arthur martinez of Marble Falls brings his heartfelt ballads, vocals and lyrics sung in Spanish as easily as English.

• Fri., Nov. 8: Mingo Fishtrap, the Austin soul/funk band delivers a mash-up of melodic pop and Memphis soul with a twist of N’awlins funk.

• Sat., Jan. 18, 2014: Shake, Rattle and Roll is an all-female group from East Texas that keeps the crowd entertained with Doo Wop ditties, vocal harmonies, synchronized moves, hula hooping skills and comedy.

• Fri., Mar. 7: The globe-girdling Texas Guitar Quartet – Isaac Bustos, Jonathan Dotson, Alejandro Montiel, Joseph Williams II – is a talented ensemble dedicated to passionately presenting chamber music of the highest quality.

• Fri., April 11: High energy pianist Matt Wilson and Band typically have audience members on their feet, clapping, dancing and singing along to a wide array of captivating musical styles.

• Fri., May 2: The Motheral Family 4th Annual Tony Campise Jazz Concert features Texas-born pianist and blues-man James Polk and Count Basie’s former featured vocalist Carmen Bradford in tribute performances to the late and legendary Austin jazz artist.

In a change of itinerary, all performances this season will begin at 7 p.m. at the Spicewood Vineyards Event Center (1419 Burnet CR 409), about 35 miles from Downtown Austin and three miles off Texas Hwy. 71. (http://www.spicewoodvineyards.com/)

This season, light hors d’oeuvres will be served at intermission only, while Spicewood Vineyards wines will be available for purchase before and after each show and at intermission.

Season tickets, sold on a first-come basis, are the only way to assure a place at the 225-seat venue. The cost for the six concerts is $160 through July 15; $180 after that date – the same as the previous season. Purchases can be made immediately online: www.spicewoodarts.org, or a detailed brochure and form can be requested by calling 512-264-2820.

A wait list for individual performance tickets is available now. Those on the Wait List generally get tickets, which are $45 each with reservations. They will be notified at least two weeks prior to the designated performance.

FESTIVAL, FUNDRAISER, ART TREKSThe 10th Annual Arts Round-up: Festival of Fine Arts

returns this fall to the La Cabana Grille’s peaceful oak grove at TX Hwy. 71 and Reimers Road. Round-up is a juried show featuring visual artists from Central Texas and beyond as well as live music. Artist’s applications can be accessed at http://www.zapplication.org/.

The “bonus concert,” featuring classical pianist Doug Montgomery on Fri., Nov. 15, will be priced separately at $50 per person. His magnetic personality and popular stylings played to a sold-out SAS concert in November 2011 with 70 persons on a waiting list before the list was closed.

The “Sentimental Journey” Scholarship Fundraiser, will be Sat., Feb. 8 at the Lakeside Pavilion in Marble Falls. The event will feature music of the Big Bands of the Fabulous ‘40s with the new location offering plenty of space to dance. Proceeds fund six art scholarships to seniors at Marble Falls and Lake Travis High Schools.

Reserved round table seating will accommodate more persons who will enjoy both mellow and high energy tunes as well as

The highly successful, extra-curricular “Art Treks,” part of the SAS Visual Arts Program, begin their own season of bus trips to selected museums and galleries around the state in the early fall, with the schedule of reservations-only trips to be announced in early summer.

SPONSORSHIPS & OUTREACHThis past year, the SAS sponsored visiting artists for on-campus

programs at the Spicewood Elementary School; gifted $6,000 in scholarships to arts-committed seniors at Marble Falls and Lake Travis (Lakeway) High Schools, and supported the Spicewood Community Library fundraiser.

“We are extremely grateful to such sponsors as Luther King Capital Management, LLC of Austin; the Motheral Family of Spicewood, and (Elizabeth) Blount Consulting,” Norwood observed. “We welcome additional sponsors and advertisers for our upcoming season so that we may expand events and engage even more students in the arts.”

Interested firms are invited to contact the SAS. Companies and individuals also can make tax deductible donations to the 501(c) (3) at levels ranging from Friends, Supporters or Patrons to Silver, Gold and Platinum. Gifting helps the Society increase its arts outreach activities.
