RAMS March and the approach of improved weather bring enthusiasm for another season of fun for your Meadowbrook RAMS! Our Pinehurst Spring Trip still has openings for those who have not signed up. April 23-27 is still scheduled as a gathering for our Rams and Rametts. Checks for reservations are asked to be made out to the Rams and dropped off at the Club office in the Rams mailbox. One last time, the cost is $786 for two golfers inclusive of golf, room, and some meals and drink. A single golfer with a non golfer is $625. Don’t miss out and remember: “What goes on in Pinehurst, stays in Pinehurst.” Our junior golf tournament golf planning for November 5th is ongoing. The latest news is we have had 3 more wonderful donations to this event’s cost underwriting. Thanks to these donors who will be recognized on our new donor plaque in the pro shop! Our special events coordinator, Dave Ellett, has informed us the first competition with Jefferson Lakeside this season will take place at MCC, Thursday, March 30th. Please mark your calendar and sign up for being a part of an early season beat down! We have a special event each month this year starting in June. Soon Dean Evans will establish our new corner on the BROWN (it was misspoken last month and called green) first tee announcement board. Check out our special announcements to see specific upcoming events and dates. Lastly, please mark your calendars for one more upcoming event. April 12th is the next quarterly Rams dinner meeting. We will have a special guest speaker from Channel 6, Kristen Luehrs. She will share of her industry and as well her love for golf. Let’s have a BIG MCC turnout! ~ Ken Hart

A “True” Captain’s Choice
Saturday, March 18
9:30 AM Shotgun
ENTRY FEE: $26 per player
Includes lunch and prize money
Make your own 4-player team
Hole Assignments by “Blind Draw”
UNIQUE FORMAT: On each tee box BEFORE anyone tees off the team Captain
designates which of the players will be playing their own ball
on that hole. After the tee shots the Captain decides which is
the best and the team proceeds to that ball. From that spot
three team members play a Scramble and the selected player
plays their own ball with applicable handicap strokes. The
“Team” score is the lower of the two scores…the 3-player
Scramble OR the individual’s low net score.
“A” and “B” Players (as designated by the team Captain) will
play at least four holes using their own ball. “C” and “D”
Players (as designated by the team Captain) will play at least
three holes using their own ball.
The TEAM CAPTAIN will decide who will play their own
ball on the remaining four holes…it could be one hole for
each player or the same person on all four
holes…CAPTAIN’S CHOICE!

CART RATE INCREASE
Attention Members!
Golf cart rates increased on
January 1, 2017. The new cart
Rates are $18/rider + sales tax for 18 holes,
And $10/rider + sales tax for 9 holes.
Trees
A tree is an important part of any golf course. Trees can define a
holes layout (dogleg); it can protect a green from being easily
approached to impacting the placement of one’s tee shot (such
as #18). A tree can be used as an aiming point for a tee shot or a
2nd shot. Trees provide much needed shade on a hot summer’s
day. Many clubs use a tree as their club logo or signature name.
Trees can also be used for protection and a barrier against
wayward golf shots.
Unfortunately these same trees also require a lot of maintenance.
Leaf and stick removal being the most obvious. They also need
trimming to provide access to cart paths or in some instances
being able to hit your ball that came to rest underneath the tree.
Tree roots present safety issues which are addressed in the Rules
of Golf by offering unplayable ball relief. Roots also crawl
beneath cart paths creating bumps and crumbled cart paths.
Shade from trees are often the cause of poor grass growth. Trees
restrict air circulation needing to be eliminated because of this.
Our maintenance crew has recently removed several trees from
the golf course. Most of these trees did not impact play. The
exception being the trees on the left side of the 5th fairway. The
two trees that were removed on #5 provided a splendid target
for a tee shot but they also impacted grass growth producing
hard pan lines not only in the rough area but also in the fairway.
Removal of the trees was necessary for grass growth.
Unfortunately the open space created by the removal results in a
much easier golf hole. Hopefully to augment this issue a bunker
can be placed in the area. With that bunker positioned properly
the tee shot on 5 will present a challenge to the big hitter but not
impact the player with shorter tee shots.
The end result will be players playing from grass (or maybe sand)
and not hard pan and tree roots. The challenge offered from
deep grassy lines is quite different from shots struck from bare
spots. The end result will be a greener golf course, a new set of
challenges for the players and golf holes that appear more open
and golfer friendly.

MEADOWBROOK COUNTRY CLUB
2017 MEMBER GUEST
FORMAT
Teams pre-flighted according to handicap using 100%
of the course handicap. 6 teams per flight. Flights
determined by team’s combined course handicap as of
the June 15th revision date.
Teams will play (5) nine-hole rounds with various
stroke play formats converted to a Stableford Points
System.
TEE ASSIGNMENTS
Players of 64 years of age and younger will play White
Tee markers.
All players over the age of 65 or whose age plus
handicap total 80 or more, will qualify to play Gold
Tee markers.
All players over the age of 75 qualify to play Red Tee
markers.
Prior to determining tournament flights, teams with
partners whose course handicap differential is greater
than 10 strokes will be modified. The higher handicap
will be adjusted downwards to reflect a tournament
maximum differential of 10 strokes. For instance if a
“3” handicap is paired with a “14” handicap, the “14”
handicap will be adjusted to 13 for a combined team
handicap of 16 (3 + 13). This team will be flighted
based off of the team handicap of 16.
The tournament committee reserves the right to adjust
any handicaps prior to the start of competition.
DAY 1 – FRIDAY, JUNE 23
First 9: Better Ball of the team net (converted to points)
using 100% handicap
Second 9: Captain’s Choice net (converted to points).
Handicap determined by 30% of team’s combined
handicap.
Third 9: Selected Drive/Alternative Stroke (converted to
points) using 30% of team’s combined handicap. Both
players tee off on each hole and then select one ball to
alternate until the hole is complete. The 3rd nine hole round
will have a maximum stroke limit per hole, determined by
the Tournament Committee and reflected on your
scorecard at the time of play.
DAY 2 – SATURDAY, JUNE 24
First 9: Better Ball of the team net (converted to points)
using 100% of each player’s handicap.
Second 9: Combined Net Score (converted to points) of
both players using 80% handicap
Shootout: Selected Drive/Alternative Stroke
The field will be limited to the first 45 teams (9 flights
of 3 teams). After 45 entries are received entries will be
accepted when they are received in increments of 5.
Teams will play 3 nine-hole rounds using the formats
mentioned above. This will allow teams to rotate
playing opponents while competing against their
entire flight and not just the team they are paired with.
Points will be allocated as follows:
Net Bogey = 1 Point
Net Par = 2 Points
Net Birdie = 3 Points
Net Eagle = 5 Points
Net Double Eagle = 7 Points

STAR HILL BREWERY – Reviver Red India Pale Ale
An India Pale Ale that blurs the boundaries between IPA and Amber style beers. Specialty malts provide its inviting ruby-red hue, medium body and firm maltiness, while American hops impart a refreshing citrus aroma and flavor. Brewed in Crozet, Virginia.
O’CONNOR BREWING CO. – Zephyrweisse Brewed in Norfolk, Virginia, this beer is O’Connor Brewing Company’s take on a Hefeweizen. This beer is light bodied with a citric sharpness but enough wheat twang to keep it smooth drinking. A perfect beer for after a round of golf on a spring day.

$18++ per person – Guests Welcome
Our theme for March is dessert wines, and we will feature
some really interesting local and international wines. One of which is royal Tokaji – you’ll need to come and listen to know
more about what that is and where it is from, but please do not miss this one, even if you think that sweet wines are not
your favorite, or something to avoid, getting an opportunity to be in the same room with a royal Hungarian wine is very
special. In all my years of teaching, tasting, and consulting, I have yet to meet a person that didn’t like this wine and would
go out of their way to get their hands on one.

A Word from our Board President Greetings Fellow Members,
First let me say, I appreciate the great turn out for the Town Hall Meeting last Month. I hope
we were able to address member concerns beyond those involving finance and membership.
While finance and membership continue to be our most important issues the Board still strives
toward making your membership more entertaining and enjoyable. The Capital Plan is on track
and we expect to acquire the aerator at month’s end and be ready to aerate the greens at the
appropriate time. We will also be acquiring the new deck mower in or about the April
timeframe. To date, the Capital Plan has received $112,607 and expended $75,322. The repair to
the drain system on #17 is expected to be completed on or about the 8th of this month. The
delay has been caused by manufacturer of the parts need for the repair.
Again, I would like to remind all of our golfers to be mindful of several things, carts, fairways
and greens. Take the time to repair “your” ball marks on the greens and divots in the fairways.
This wonderful weather has been most enjoyable and has generated a significant increase in the
number of rounds for this time of year. So, please take a minute to repair your ball marks on the
greens and your divots in the fairways. For those of you who ride, carts should exit the fairways
at the designated points when approaching the greens and stay on the cart path until exiting the
next tee complex at the cart scatter sign. For those of you who use push/pull carts please keep
them away from the greens. They should never be pushed or pulled between the greens and
bunkers on any hole or the course. Stand bags should be placed an appropriate distance away
from the collar of the green and not on the collar.
One of the main reasons our club is successful is its members. We rely on members to bring
guests and hopefully turn those guests into new members by enjoying great dining experience
and playing one of the best golf courses in the Richmond area. So if you have someone you
know who may be looking for a club to join please let our Membership Director know.
As you have seen in the newsletter there are quite a few events scheduled for this month. So if
you are looking for an evening out and a good time or good golf competition join us for these
events. You won’t be disappointed. Also don’t forget about the Friday night raffle. The “pot”
continues to grow, but in order to win you need to be present.
As I stated last month, 2017 marks the 60th Anniversary of the Club. The Women’s Club and
RAMS have a joint History Book Committee working on writing the first revision to the original
Club History Book written in 1984 by Edward D. Goodman. If you have any old photographs,
information or any relevant data you can share with the Committee please contact Ben Thorp
(743-1205) or Gary Larson (275-8320).
