Nexen Petroleum - Discovery House

OVERVIEWThe new Corporate Headquarters for upstream oil and gas provider Nexen, is part of the Prime Four Business Park Development. Prime Four is a community of offices, leisure facilities and communal areas and is located four miles west of Aberdeen city centre, at Kingswells.

Richard Irvin Energy Solutions was appointed by leading UK construction and civil engineering company, Sir Robert McAlpine, to provide the ventilation and pipework services across the new facility.

The new facility which was completed and occupied in early 2014 is a 4-storey development with accommodation including offices and open plan space, meeting zones/town hall, meeting rooms, first aid rooms, kitchen/dining areas, coffee areas, security rooms, mail rooms and executive board room areas.

Richard Irvin’s M & E Business Unit was responsible for the mechanical services installation during the construction phase, which includes natural gas, Low Temperature Hot Water Heating, mechanical ventilation systems providing supply and extract air, VRV Comfort Cooling/Heating, Smoke Damper Ventilation Systems, Car Park ventilation, Chilled Water Cooling Systems, Hot & Cold Water Systems, an in built car park snow melt system, symphonic drainage, dry risers, sanitary ware, brassware and above ground drainage.

KEY FEATURESu Richard Irvin Energy Solutions participated in the 3D Building

Information Model (BIM) that provided a ‘clash free’, ‘drawn once’, construction solution. From this Richard Irvin Energy Solutions was able to plan and pre-fabricate the critical elements of the mechanical services installation

u A challenging on site-construction programme required Richard Irvin Energy Solutions to pre-fabricate the pipework modules at their off-site facility. The standardisation of a modular pipework system allowed the units to be pre-fabricated and tested under ideal manufacturing conditions. A meticulously planned transportation schedule also allowed the modules to be delivered to site ‘just in time’. Using mechanical lifting equipment and a proprietary wire rope suspension solution our team of on-site engineers simply manoeuvred the modules into position within the ceiling voids and coupled them together

u This method of pre-fabrication allowed Richard Energy Solutions to keep ahead of plan and ensure the pipework distribution systems were installed, tested and ready for follow-on trades
