Muzaffarpur Diocesan Social Service Society (MDSSS) isthe official organization for promoting Social Welfare andDevelopment in twelve civil districts of Muzaffarpur Diocese
in Bihar. Since 1980, the diocesan social work departmenthas been striving towards integral development of themarginalized and underprivileged people of Bihar,particularly of the dalits and landless. CommunityMobilization and Participatory Development are the twinpillars of our social work activities. We are committed toparticipatory, community owned self sustainable modelsof development.

Bihar remains one of the poorest states of India with alarge chunk of the population belonging to traditionallyunder-privileged sections. Bihar witnesses constantstruggles of existence between the haves and have-nots.Muzaffarpur Diocesan Social Service Society’s (MDSSS)target population consists of these marginalized, oppressed
and poverty stricken communities in 12 civil districts of Bihar namely Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, Sitamarhi,Sheohar, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Khagaria, Begusarai,Saharsa, Madhepura and Supaul.

Social life of the people is conditioned by caste arithmetic. Economicstatus of the landless poor and dalits depends upon the high caste.Social relationship of the high caste with the dalits is merely a verbalcommunication to engage them in their agricultural fields. We facethe herculean task of tackling various economic as well as socio-culturalimpediments to the development of these traditionally oppressed and
backward communities. Dalits, who make up 85 % of Bihar’s population,are often referred to as untouchables or outcastes. They are excludedfrom the privileges of thesociety and treated inhumanly.Bihar popularly known forvarious local religious festivalshas made people economically
poor and busy.
Haves make use of them asbonded agricultural labors,who are treated with physicaland verbal abuse. Migrationand the anonymity in theurban environment have insome cases resulted in upwardoccupational mobility amongDalits, but it has not resulted
in savings or economic security. Such unsafe migration has alwayscontributed to health hazards that lead them to non productive
premature ageing. Due to over work, unhealthy food practices,submission to alcoholism and exposed to extreme weather conditionsthey are prone to acute illness either earned or acquired through

apostolate got organised with the pioneers, Sr. Maria Therese (MMS)along with Sr. Grace of SND under the leadership of Bishop Rev. JohnBaptist Thakur, S.J. In the initial phases the apostolate concentratedon non-formal education, relief and charity. Social ministry was servedand executed by following directors respectively, Mr. L.J.David, Mr.James Seraphim, Fr. Joseph Oreya, Fr. Julius Lazarus and Fr. SajiAugustine. Last twenty seven years of uphill struggle served to give anew shape to the face of Muzaffarpur Diocesan Social Service Society.
Since its inception MDSSS activities have been undergoing paradigmtriggered by the changing needs of the target population and the newinsights generated from the dynamic sphere of social welfare. Whilethe first decade had begun with Charity and General Social Welfareworks, the second decade gave importance to Non-formal Education,Women Empowerment and Community Development. Recent trend is
adding value to the ongoing measures of the society by integratingfocus on Sustainable Development. The ‘Bihar Flood Response Program2007’ added elegant professional approach to the service through theinclusion of Resilience Building along with Sustainable DevelopmentInitiatives. Today MDSSS stands proudly as a faithful friend and ardentadvocate of the needy and underprivileged.
