TROUBLE SHOOTINGQ: Help! I can't get MDK to run!

A: MDK requires 16 Megs of RAM to run. Ifyou do not have this, MDK will either not run,or may crash often during gameplay.

Q: I can't select any of the options in the mainmenu.

A: If you are in DOS mode, make sure thatyou have loaded your mouse driver beforestarting MDK. Although the mouse is notnecessary to play MDK, it is needed to selectsome options.

Q: My joystick won't work. What's theproblem?

A: Check to make sure your joystick is set upcorrectly. Then check in the MDK 'Joystick'options to make sure the joystick is enabled. In DOS mode you may need to load yourjoystick's drivers that came with it. Pleasecheck their documentation for further help.

Q: The game is running slowly on my machine, what can I do?

A: MDK will run faster in Win95 or DOS due toyour hardware configuration. Some videocards, for example, work best in DOS or onlyWin95. Try playing the game in the other modeto see if there is an increase in performance. You will not need to reinstall the game, but

simply run the other MDK executable (MDK95for Windows95 or MDK.exe for the DOSexecutable) to see which gives you the bestperformance on your machine. Note: This willdepend on whether or not you chose Win,DOS or both in the installation menu.

Q: The sound doesn't work!

A: That's not a question.

Q: The sound doesn't work on my machine. Can you help?

A: Sure! First off, we'll assume that you'vechecked to make sure that the speakers areturned on and plugged in correctly to your PCand you're running a 100% SoundBlaster?compatible card. As a note, not all soundcards are truly 100% compatible, in which caseyou may not be able to get sound from MDK.

Now, if you're running in Win95, check to makesure that your soundcard is operatingcorrectly. Remember that in Win95 you canhave a correctly operating soundcard but havethe sound muted. Double click on the speakericon on the task bar to see if the sound isset to 'mute all'. If you are trying to run thegame in DOS, make sure that your sound card

and mouse drivers are being loaded for yourDOS session. Consult your sound cardinstruction manual on loading the DOS drivers.

Q: It takes too long to load each level. Howcan I speed it up?

A: Try re-installing the game and put the mostinformation you can on your hard drive. It'smuch faster for your PC to move informationfrom the hard drive into RAM than from theCD, but you must have more hard drive space

available.

GAME PLAY TIPS &

TECHNIQUESQ: Why doesn't the Bones Airstrike work insome areas?

A: When you have picked up the Bonesairstrike power-up, you must go into snipermode to use it. Make sure the airstrike powerup is the ammunition selected. The centre ofyour targeting system will turn red when it isfocused in on an area that Bones can bomb.Bones can't "Deliver Kindness" in enclosedenvironments or under overhangs since he'sgot to fly in to bomb the area. When you haveselected the target, press the normal firebutton. This tells Bones that you have set yourtarget and it is OK for him to start hisbombing run.

Q: I don't know what all the weapons do! Help!

A: Whenever you pick up an item, the name ofthe weapon appears. This should give yousome clue as to the item's abilities. You arereceiving the new weapons as soon as thegood doctor invents them, so there's not a lotof advanced documentation on these items. Ifyou don't know what a weapon does, then finda quiet area and fire one off to test it.

Q: I'm having trouble aiming quickly enough insniper mode. Any suggestions?

A: Keep the zoom level very low when findingtargets. Put the crosshairs on the target andthen zoom in. This method is much moreeffective than zooming in and then trying toacquire the target.

Q: I keep seeing these random messages onthe screen, like "Au Revoir, Paris". What dothey mean?

A: If you look at the meter in the lower rightcorner of the screen, there is a green bandsurrounding it. At its fullest, it indicates thenumber of people alive near the city-minecrawler. As the bar decreases in size, thatindicates that more and more innocent peopleare dying. When the bar is depleted, a majorcity has been destroyed by an alien citybecause you took so long. Way to go..

Dear Consumer,

In the best interest of fair play andyour assured enjoyment of the MDKproduct, we offer the survivingnotes from the esteemed, yet under-appreciated Dr. Fluke Hawkins. Thegood doctor was kind enough to letus in on the inner workings of hismind (a dangerous location at best),to provide these scant notes jotteddown during the cataclysm of theStreamrider Invasion.

We wish you luck in your journeys.Remember, the lives you save maybe those of your own descendants.

Sincerely,

Big disappointment. Flange Orbits doNOT exist. My work at the observatory(terrestrial viewpoint, WHAT was Ithinking?) must have altered theinstrument’s perceptions, somehow. Havedecided to stay up here until I discoverSOMETHING of use to the scientificcommunity (beats returning to Earth toface massive amounts of criticism andridicule). My reputation as a scientist is

at stake here! At least now Ihave plenty of timeto dedicate to myresearch anddiscoveries, thistime, NOT havingto worry aboutatmosphericdistortion effects. Ihave plenty of rawmaterials to workwith, (what with thenow surplus FlangeOrbit surveyequipment), to

create incredible new inventions. I’vealready started dismantling them (okay, maybe not in the most scientificmanner). The Flange Thermos was thefirst to go — we needed to use theexxxxtttraaaaa powwwweeeeerrrrr.....Heeeeyy...Wwwwhhhhy iisssss iittttssssooooo cc-ccc-cccoooolldd??????Gotttt tttoo fiiixxxxxxxx......Okay, scratch the re-do on the FlangeThermos. I’ve told Kurt about mydecision to stay up here for a whilelonger. He was reluctant at first, butonce I showed him that the VCR wasprogrammable, he loosened up a bit. Iexpect my work to last only anotherweek or so. I’m going to need a littlemore help around here (Robot?? Self-Note — check files on robotics.) Halfwaythrough my temper tantrum with theabove-mentioned equipment, I noticedthat I also dismantled the clock. I’ll haveto fix it later...

It’s about time! I remember now howinfuriating those NASA bureaucrats andtheir blasted red tape are when you wantto get anything done. This is my ship, not theirs, dang-it, so what’s the bigdeal? That aside, my work on studyingthe Flange Orbits is under way! Our take-off was a tad premature (countdownclock malfunctioned — study problemlater), but Kurt and I made it into orbitin one piece and I’ve adjusted thetrajectory to counter for the earlylaunch. We were heading straight forthe Sun, but we’re okay now. Themission is scheduled for five days andalready I can see Kurt’s desire to returnto Earth.I’ve decided to keep this journal torecord the significant events of theexpedition in their proper order. (Self-Note: Just the material that will assistthe nominating committee of the NobelInstitute in recognising me for mycontributions to Astronomical Research.)If anything of an extraordinary nature

happens while we’re up here, I’ll put it inthis log. THINK OF IT!! We’re now in orbit and myinstruments will prove to the scientificcommunity the existence of FlangeOrbits... the most revolutionary discoveryof the cosmos since Einstein’stime/space work (relativity speaking). I’mgoing to be listed with the greats—Copernicus, Gallileo, Mark Hamill!Mother would have been so proud...

Almost a year now since I built Bonesand he’s been a boon to me. Kurt insistson calling him Max (why, I’ll never know),and his spirits have been lifted greatly. Ithink I gave Bones too much intelligencethough, because he actually resentshaving to do any work around here.Although I did not install vocal cords(Thank the stars!), his little body poutswith the best of them.Other than “fixing” things on the station,Bones spends the majority of his timestudying books and tending his vegetablepatch which he built on top of the ship.(Self-Note: Research project - Simulatedlife forms and their study habits: Whatgives?) Other than expressing disdainfrom time to time, Bones works out wellfor a six-armed dog. (When Iprogrammed the computer to design himto be an efficient assistant, it added twomore arms to him. Go figure.) It wasn’tmy idea, but he sure moves around at agood clip and the extra paws reallycome in handy for communication. Hedeveloped his own form of sign

language 2 weeks after he was created. He gets very excited sometimes andwhen he tries to “sign” us in an agitatedstate, it looks like he’s trying to put outa fire.Bones has not only mastered themajority of functions of the space shipbut he’s also fixed the coffee machine!Bright dog, indeed! Well, until youconsider we don’t actually have anycoffee left... A little on the high-strungside, Bones tries to do everything atonce. (How do you mellow-out a cyber-dog?) Bones tries to fulfil our wishes, which is noble and good, but he doesn’tquite wait until we voice them. Kurt findshim most amusing and has grown closeto the fellow. I’d make another one, butthose particular parts are getting scarceand the last thing we need up here istwo of those little guys starting a brushfire with their frenetic sign language.(Self-Note: I did put the cat out before Ileft, right?)

Date: May 10, 1997 (Not Sure) GMTJournal Entry 00.0201

My coffee-making robot — Mr. Robot, was a dismal failure. It radioed the smallvillage of Burnage, England, andthreatened to “burn-it-to-the-ground,” allthe while destroying vast portions of theship. As it was smashing the coffeemaker into a hand made parachute, Kurtsubdued it with a positronic “Mickey” ashe calls it. Good lad. (Self-Note: Checkfiles, any known use for heroism inspace?) Well, there goes another year ofwork down the drain. He’s still mad at me (Kurt, not Mr.Robot), and avoids both contact andconversation. He mutters on and onabout “running out of tape, y’know...” andgenerally sulks about the ship. Why hespends so much time in front of the TVinstead of just looking at the cosmos isbeyond me. Like there is anything morebreathtaking than the Universe itself?

Date: June 21, 1997 (Really Not Sure) GMTJournal Entry 00.0232

Young Kurt is pretty upset... avoids melike the plague most of the time. Sayshe’s bored. “Nothing to do in this tincan.” TIN CAN!!?? Harrumph!! Okay, so Iused plenty of recycled aluminum cansin the hull, but, please, Tin?? He reallyneeds to think of this ship as his home. Well, on to better news! I’ve startedwork on a genetically engineered“worker dog” who will be more than myright hand up here. I’ll give him the bulkof the chores (that should lighten Kurt’smood a bit), and teach him the fine artof listening. If nothing else, it should giveKurt someone else to talk to. I think I’ll call him “Bones.”

I’m continuing my study of the strangeelectronic “Stream” effect that nowseems to be hopping from one planet tothe next, towards the inner planets ofthe system. After some intense studyingand brilliant calculations, I’ve determinedthat this phenomenon (the electricalstreams) are truly gigantic in size! Yousee, my research indicates the fartheraway an object is, the smaller it appearsto the human eye — the only exception,of course, is the Sun. With thisknowledge at my disposal, I hypothesisethat the stream is not growing in mass, but actually coming our direction at analarming rate of speed!Okay, Bones and I are doing thestudying... It actually looks like it’scoming close enough to our position toallow us to study it close up. (Self Note:It’s as if the force behind the stream hadbeen studying our system beforeentering it.) I’ve notified Earth of myfindings, (heck, I even sent them abasket of Bones’ oranges), yet, they all

seem unconcerned. Hey, it’s theirbarbecue... Oh, that’s better! I’ve always hated thatpen. Now, as I was sayin.......ARRRGGHHH! We’ve been hit!!! Thestream is here..... Earth is in direct pathmust— warn— no— time—AAARRRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!

BIG NEWS!! I think I’ve discoveredsomething that dwarfs the Flange Orbittheory that brought us up here in thefirst place!! An electric anomaly hasmanifested in the fringe areas of ourgalaxy. Alien life, perhaps, or is it merelyan electric anomaly that has manifestedin the fringe areas of our galaxy? This

requires a greater degree of study than Ican devote to, so Bones had to pick upthe slack while I concentrate on myother keen experiments (I’m right in themiddle of developing a nuclear-blast-proof automatic page turner! YOW!) Foran odd looking dog, he certainly comesin handy. With his assistance, I feelsometimes that I can be in two placesat once.

Streamriders, led by a being known asGunter Glut. Their plan is quite simple, really — they drive around massiveMining Cities (Miles in diameter!) andconsume all matter underneath. They areafter either the rich mineral and metaldeposits of the major cities of Earth orour potato harvests and nothing butscorched, blackened ground is left intheir wake. Why do they always pick the mostpopulated areas for their attacks!!?? Why,can you tell me, Why?? Why?? Why??Why?? Why?? Earth’s defence forces are shattered.Anyone at this point who escapeddestruction is in no condition to mount acounter-offensive. Due to my advanced years and Bones’extra arms (disqualifying him from evenfitting in the suit), Kurt has been electedas hero. This will give me the time Ineed to supervise the work effort andinvent new items for use in battleagainst the Streamriders. I’ve beenworking day and night on his equipmentand suit (Thank the stars the coffeemachine was fixed!), and now it’s up toKurt to save the remaining populationfrom complete annihilation. Luckily, most of my inventions (in oneform or another) were in storage frommy work over the last few years. A fewtweaks here, a couple of amps there andhe’ll be ready for action. Bones has beenassisting me in getting the suit (andKurt) in battle-ready condition. I guessthis is it...

GUNSKurt, you’re going to have to brace yourselffor this. You are about to embark on amission that involves more action than, say, negotiation. Okay, all action and no negotiation. Those aliens down there look hell-bent ondoing their business and they pretty muchmow down anyone and anything in their path. This being the case, your tools ofcommunication with them involve you using thefirepower I give you to introduce them to theafterlife.

I know you’re not big on the “killing thing” asyou call it, but frankly, if you ever want topark a car with a lady friend again, well, you’llhave to execute this mission with extremeprejudice. Our initial intelligence indicates thatit is possible to sneak past the sentries onyour way to the control room of each “MineCrawler”, but that means you’ll always belooking over your shoulder. It’s really up toyou to get the job done. I trust you’ll do theright thing.

So here’s the arsenal you’ll start with:

DR. HAWKINS “EXTRAORDINARY”CHAIN-GUN:First-off, we have a multi-use, single purpose(killing aliens), weapon that was fashionedfrom a recovered satellite. Self-explanatory,really, it’s a hand held gun that unleashes agoodly portion of ammo in the direction you

point it. Due to my work with gyroscopes anddental floss, it has the singular remarkablefeature of being adjustable to fit right ontoyour helmet to become...

DR. HAWKINS “INEFFABLE” SNIPER GUN:Here’s the cool part - you can attach thechain-gun to your faceplate and it morphs intoa long range sniper gun! This is another one ofmy almost-tested inventions (it should work,Kurt, trust me, the figures don’t lie). I originallyhad this in mind for bird spotting, but whenattached to a sniper’s rifle, I’m afraid thegeneral temptation to graze the hind feathersoff the birds was too much.

But as I’m sure you’re aware, Kurt, some ofthe best inventions come from failed attemptsat something else. (Look at Bones.) Remember, son, you can never look a gifted horse in hishouse - and this piece of philosophy has beenmy blessing in life.

So, you got the gun(s), you got the suit... Nowthe mission itself. Read on lad, I’ve titled it“MISSION: DELIVER KINDNESS”

KURT’S INSTRUCTION

MANUALBY DR. FLUKE HAWKINS

All right my boy, let’s get started. You’ve beenbriefed by Bones (Code name: Handy) on themission, so here are some additional notes.Remember, we’re counting on you!

DR. HAWKINS “AMAZING” COIL SUIT:Due to the hostile environments you are aboutto enter, what with the aliens shooting atanything that moves, really, I thought you coulduse some mobile armour plating (that doesn’tchafe). This is a special suit and a darned toughone at that. It has to be, actually, becauseBones and I have determined that the best wayfor you to gain access to the Mining Cities isvia free fall from space through theatmosphere. This Coil Suit was developed byme using revolutionary materials and mynuclear-blast-proof sewing machine.

You will find it most useful in repelling the side-effects of direct hits from enemy fire and fastmoving projectiles (i.e., bullets, missiles, bees,etc.). They won’t actually penetrate the suit, butthey’ll leave a nasty welt or two. A few bruisesaside, you’ll outlast the enemy if you use thissuit and act with stealth, not bravado. I’ve triedit on myself and it’s got a real comfy fit. Sorry, son, it only comes in black.

DR. HAWKINS “INCREDIBLE” RIBBONCHUTE: Now, you’ll notice a small lump on theshoulder... this is nothing, but the larger massin the centre of your back is the RibbonChute. This is an invention of mine that I can’twait to see tested! (Sorry, Kurt — I had notime to try this out.) All indications show thatit should work. Use it to retard yourgravitational access to the ground.

Open and retract it as often as you want. There’s a built-in safety feature that preventsyou from accidentally setting it off while you’reon the ground. Now for the fun stuff...

just haven’t gotten to it yet. The good news isthat by the time you stop the Streamrider’sinvasion I should have this last little kinkfigured out. Trust me.

EXTRACTION II: A painful operation I’d rathernot go in to.

THE CHEESE SANDWICH: A snack which isvery easy to make and tastes delicious! It isgreatly revered and often offered as asacrifice in Neolithic Britain.

AIR SUPPORT: When you find yourself indesperate need of a Deus Ex Machina (or help

from above), signal us and Bones will pilot theemergency shuttle in a an aerial assault on theenemies in your immediate vicinity. We can’tprovide this service often because the shuttleis poorly armoured for this kind of mission(and I’ve grown accustomed to his help). Mostof the ground forces will be focused on yourincursion, so there’s a good chance Bones willbe able to zip in, pepper the aliens and zipout again relatively unscathed. If you can handle all of the above, you’reready to go.

MISSION: DELIVER KINDNESS

OR

STOP THE BIG MINE CRAWLERSINTELLIGENCE REPORT I: From what ourIntelligence sources indicate (You got me, it’sme and Bones looking at things from our lab),each Mining City is equipped with a masterpilot. Knock this guy off and by all reasoning, the whole shebang comes to screeching halt. Igive Bones the credit for theorising that thecessation of motion triggers their immediatedeparture from Earth via the Stream andhopefully back wherever they came from. He’sprobably right about that so get ready to jumpship when that happens.

INTELLIGENCE REPORT II: It has come toour attention that some people are clever (i.e.,Intelligent), while others are not so, or in thiscase, (unintelligent).

TIME CONSIDERATIONS I: There’s nodelicate way to put this — the longer you taketo complete your mission, the more people willdie. Take too long and there’s not going to beany ladies left for you to park with... But, hey,no pressure, huh? You just have to keepfocused on the job at hand and push those

roaming alien slime-buckets off our planet. Ifyou fail though (not that you will, mind you,Bones and I have all the confidence in theworld in you, lad), but, say if you shouldhappen to fail, then I can get right to work onmy Mars Colonisation Project. As a back up,that’s all! You’re going to do fine, my boy, justfine!

TIME CONSIDERATIONS II: A clock.

MORGAN FREEMAN: A talented actor knownfor his charitable work with fish.

ENTRY I: Your initial departure involves anextended free fall into Earth’s atmosphere fromour ship. The suit has been designed toprotect you from re-entry burns, but you’llhave to avoid detection from the enemy’sradar. Once they lock-on to you they will makeit very difficult to hit the ground as anythingmore sizable than a pile of ashes.

ENTRY II: A door.

RED RIDING HOOD: A remarkable storyabout a wolf who befriends three pigs all, coincidentally, named Sally. Bear this in mind ifyou ever want to get out of this alive!

EXTRACTION I: Here’s the story — I haven’tquite figured out how I’m going to get youback up here. Sorry. With all the inventing, planning and redesigning going on up here, I

lookout for the bad-guys in tightsmission. You may scream defiantly at thewind for an answer WHY WHY WHY???Here’s your answer — I don’t know. Youknow I want a world of peace wherrepuppies can play in the sun and notworry about traffic on the interstate. I’mworking for that goal up here with theDoctor. As far as fighting skills, do yureally want a spastic dog with extralimbs carrying near-nuclear weapons atYOUR SIDE???? Good. We’ll both dobetter this way, pal, truust me.Whoops! There’s the genius Doctor now, gotta go good luck don’t fake anywooden fish..........Keep in mind, Kurt, that you are notalone in your mission. Although Bonesand I are a mere 240 miles away, we’reright there with you all the way! I won’trest until I can arm you with everything Ican put together with my imaginationand a some spare parts from the ship.New inventions will be coming your wayas soon as I complete them. In fact, here’s the latest two:The Very Large Hamster Hammer: Asmashing success that will vibrate the ground

in a 12.9 (Richter scale) simulated earthquake.Launch it and run like the dickens!

The World’s Most Interesting Bomb: Thistechnology came from my research inmotivating children to eat their vegetables, butnow it certainly comes in handy in popping offthe heads of alien invaders. Funny, eh? Justtoss the bomb and watch ‘em come running toit! They maybe ruthless scavengers fromspace, but they have little chance of avoidingthe alluring elements of this bomb! I’ve addedsections to it that resemble the aliensthemselves so you will not fall under thebomb’s near-hypnotic spell.

If I come up with anything else, I’ll haveyou test it “in the field” - that’s whatthey used to say in the military, isn’t it?As I won’t be there to explain most ofthe weapons I’m dropping down to you,I’ll try and make some kind ofholographic projector to give you someclues as to their functions. The one thingthey all will have in common is theirability to passively or aggressively allowyou to separate the invaders from theircurrent status as living creatures.Well, Kurt, this is it. It’s all up to younow. Don’t worry about Bones and me,

Thank you very much Doctor Hawkins. Well,Kurt here iz the scoop.......................

09:47 am GMT, somewhere over Kirkaldy,Scotland

As you can see by the clock reading, (Ifixed the clock so we know whut time itiz), now about the aliens— they canrevert their beings from solid to pureenergy, thereby transversing theelectromagnetic STREAM that they useas an intergalactic freeway for theregargantuan Mining Cities. They strip theplanets crust down past the bedrockwhilst extracting minerals everysecond that they are allowed to do so,so its’ up to you to stop them fromhurting the planet earth. They are preparing the world forcomplete takeover and have run oversome of the most famous ones in theirtreks:Kirkaldy, ScotlandIgotskyrunsky, RussiaPerth, AustraliaChagrin Falls, OhioCrawley, EnglandMill Valley, California

Oh the humanity, Kurtt, the humanity!Every second counts, you MUST savethe Earth and cum back safe, safe, safe,because... um, you know, uh....Wait a minute, I lost my train of thought.OH! That’s righht!I want to see the world you grew up incuz I have only seen pictures in theencyclopedia discs and I want to knowmore about more people and humanitytoo. If you happen to find any femaledogs whilst you ’re doown there, pleesebring her backwith you. I’m interested inmeeting the species I came from beforethey become too extinct. Please savethe world, buddy. AAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! QUICK, KURT!!! JUMPOUT OF THE SHIP!!!!!!! NOW!!!HURRYYY!!!!!!!!!NO, NO!!!!!! WAIT!!!!!!!!!PUT ON THE COIL SUITT FIRST!!!!!!!!(that was a close one!!!!)I know you’ll be thinking of me on yourmission, no need to fear. I’m just a quickcall away. You may wonder why I can’tbe at your side during this deadlydangerous, perrillous, always-at-risk,
