Gas-operated fi re pits, fi re rings and fi re-pit tables are emerging as modern-day substitutes for campfi res.

Flipping a switch to ignite the fl ames is a whole lot easier than kindling a stack of fi rewood. Safer, too.

“The outdoor living trend is continuing to gain momentum,” said Ross Johnson, sales and marketing manager for The Outdoor Great Room Co. in Eagan, Minnesota. “It started with grills and then people began spending money for outdoor furniture. Fire pits have evolved, with consumers moving toward gas for less expense and a multitude of issues.”

Fire pits, fi re rings, and fi re-ring or fi re-pit tables come in all sizes and shapes, in-ground or portable.

Fire pits are holes dug into the ground to keep fl ames from spreading. They vary from intimate cooking fi res for two to elaborate, gas-fueled burners that become conversation centers for large gatherings.

Fire rings are cleared fl at surfaces with protective metal, stone or concrete built around them to contain the burn. They often include cooking grills fueled by wood or gas — either natural gas or propane.

Fire-ring or fi re-pit tables have holes in the middle for open fl ames to provide ambiance and warmth. The tables can be used for place settings when the burner center is capped.

“Round tables are still the No. 1-selling burner, but we’re seeing more popularity with linear, even L-shaped, table-type seating,” Johnson said. “It depends upon how much room you have on the patio or deck.”

Johnson advises against using fi re tables for cooking.

“I recommend they get a grill,” he said. “They’re easier to clean up.”

Some considerations on wood vs. gas before you buy or build:

♦ Wood-burning fi xtures are cheaper to make and use. Wood gives off more heat. You can cook using wood. Wood is portable.

♦ Gas is easier to light and control. Firewood is expensive and harder to fi nd for urban dwellers. In many areas of the country, gas fi res are allowed but wood fi res are banned for reasons of safety, air quality and convenience.

Many homeowners have moved beyond the stand-alone BBQ grill, said Travis Stark, manager of Capital Patio & The Flame Shop in Lincoln, Nebraska.

“You can get outdoor dishwashers and refrigerators now — a whole outdoor kitchen,” Stark said. “Fire pits can be integrated into that.”

Some homes have multiple outdoor entertainment areas, said Leisa Rogers McCollister, a spokeswoman for OW Lee Co. Inc. in Ontario, California.

“Larger houses have lots of little areas, like off master bedrooms,” she said. “People

furnish them with comfortable seating and fi re rings.”

Why outdoor kitchens?Many reasons. Their mood-

setting atmosphere can be enhanced with LED lights, freestanding walls, benches and water fi xtures. They can be used as gathering sites for cooking and conversing, to provide supplemental outdoor heating, to expand a home’s usable living space or to boost its resale value.

“I wouldn’t use one (a fi re ring or table) in a January blizzard here in Minnesota, but it can extend the outdoor season six weeks earlier in spring and six weeks later in the fall,” Johnson said. “That’s an extra three months that people can enjoy outdoors.”

The best alternative Christmas gift — plantsWhen we think of the

Christmas season and fl owers most of

us think “Poinsettias.” This is because Poinsettias, in particular, have been the most promoted holiday fl ower for many of the past years. However, there are many other alternatives to poinsettias that are available in fl orist shops, supermarkets, garden centers and greenhouses during the holidays.

The cyclamen is an attractive plant with heart shaped leaves often with white markings. The wide color range of its abundant fl owers — white, pink, lavender, purple, red and bicolor-resemble shooting stars. Many plants will come loaded with blooms and also have many buds capable of producing extended color for three to four months. When

selecting a location in your house for a cyclamen chose a room with a bright but diffused light. Also this plant prefers cool indoor temperatures of 50 to 60 degrees. A north or east window usually

provides the right light exposure and temperature. Cyclamens also prefer high humidity which you can provide by misting or placing the pot on pebbles placed in a dish of water. Do not let the bottom of the pot touch the water. Do not let the soil dry out. Exposure to extreme temperature changes or hot, dry air will result in

bud drop. Kalanchoes are another

holiday plant that is tough and can endure in our homes for a couple of months during the winter. If you compare the leaves of the kalanchoe to the common jade plant, you will notice a resemblance. They both

have thick, fi rm, fl eshy leaves. However, the kalanchoe’s are more fl attened and tightly packed than the jade plant. The kalanchoe likes it hot and dry. When choosing your kalanchoe look for a minimum of two to three fl ower clusters on a four inch plant and four or fi ve on a six inch plant. Make sure that the plant has lots of color and little or no dead fl owers.

African violets are always popular as a holiday gift plant. Have you considered purchasing a close relative — the gloxinia? They are large, low growing and spreading plants with small, trumpet shaped fl owers. You can treat gloxinias like African violets. Avoid high-intensity, direct sunlight and water them from the bottom of the pot with warm water. Never water African violets or gloxinias from the top of the pot as this will encourage stem rot in the plant. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged

and avoid cold and hot drafts Look for plants that have at least three to fi ve open fl owers and at least that many more buds growing in the center of the plant. A six inch gloxinia will have a dozen or more buds and will continue to fl ower for three to four weeks if properly cared for. If you allow the plant to dry out or you have located it in a room that is too dark, the fl ower buds will fall off. Gloxinias come in a wide fl ower color range of whites, purples, pinks and bicolors.

Colorful fruiting plants are also popular holiday plants. Ornamental or Christmas pepper plants are dwarf pepper plants with more colorful fruits and foliage than the standard hot pepper varieties.

The ornamental peppers display vivid yellows, reds, and oranges as fruit colors. A plant in full production may have fruit of different colors in different stages of ripeness. These plants will

retain their fruit longer than many of the holiday fl owers. Provide even soil moisture to the plant. Do not let it dry out.

Whether you buy a fl owering plant, a fruiting plant or an herb for a holiday present, buy the freshest plant possible. If, when taking the plant home from the retailer, the outside temperature is less than 45 degrees, have the plant sleeved to protect it. If possible, buy these plants last on your shopping trip. Do not leave them in a cold car while you continue to shop. Only an hour or so of exposure of the plant to cold temperatures can result in leaf and blossom drop.

Marietta-based Traton Homes announced that it has partnered once again with Cobb Christmas to spread holiday cheer to those in need. Now in its 10th year of partnering with the non-profit organization, Traton Homes invites its vendors and the community to join in the effort by donating new, unwrapped toys.

To make donating convenient, Traton Homes has designated each of its new home community sales centers as drop-off locations for Cobb Christmas and will be accepting donations now through Dec. 7. Additionally, individuals can drop-off toys at Traton’s corporate office, 720 Kennesaw Avenue in Marietta, Monday through Friday.

After the toys have been collected, Traton Homes will “stuff-a-bus” with all of the donations. Then, the toys will be transported

to Jim Miller Park where they will be sorted and distributed to low-income and working-poor families of Cobb County. Toys are provided to hundreds of children ages infant through 18. In addition to the toys, a box of food is given to each family, so that they can prepare a holiday meal in their own home.
