With the appointment of Debbie Gray RVN (Veterinary Technical SupportManager) there has been heightened focus on internal product training to thesales and customer services team. Spring is upon us and as we look forward to the warmer weather we can be sure of the increase in the tick population that comeswith it! Ticks are more active in late spring and autumn and these arachnid carnivorous creatures are not only unsightly, but arehighly efficient in transmitting infectious disease.

Ticks are second only to mosquitos in transmitting infectious disease to both humans and animals and therefore it is essential thatthey are removed in the correct manner as soon as possible. Ticks are a growing problem, and can be found all over the UK and most of Europe. The Ixodes ricinus species (castor bean tick)is the most common in the UK. They can be found anywhere on the body but are commonly seen in thin skinned, non hairyregions such as the face, ears, axillae, and inguinal regions. Once a tick attaches to the host it has two stages of feeding. Duringthe initial stage of slow engorgement the tick’s saliva limits the host’s immune response which allows feeding to occur. Fastengorgement follows, usually 24 hours after attachment and during this stage there is maximum risk of disease transmission.Females can increase their weight up to 120 times and may reach a length of 10mm when engorged with a blood meal and aheavy infestation may lead to anaemia. It is therefore advisable to remove ticks as soon as possible.

Lyme disease is the most common tick borne disease in Europe, other diseases include Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichosis notonly putting pets at risk but owners too. Therefore owners should be encouraged to check their pets coat after every walk, and ifa tick is found it must be removed in the correct manner. A tick bite wound may become infected or an abscess may develop ifthe tick is forcibly removed leaving the mouthparts embedded in the skin. Myths such as using Vaseline, burning the tick,squeezing or using tweezers cause stress to the tick and encourage the tick to regurgitate saliva, thus increasing the risk ofdisease transmission. In addition, incorrect removal may be painful and could result in an undesired behavioural response uponfuture removal attempts.

Pets that travel in the UK or abroad and those that like exploring in vegetation will be at an increased risk. With the drivetowards the ‘One Health’ initiative, it is essential that pet owners are educated about ticks and the risk of disease transmission.Veterinary professionals are well placed to do this and according to the 2017 PDSA PAW report 47% of dog owners preferredto have welfare needs promoted during consultations with a vet or veterinary nurse. Therefore with spring upon us let’s educateclients and take action on ticks!

You spoke, we listened. Since the launch of our l i fe changing detangling hairbrush, The Original, in 2007 we have been inundated with requests to design a Tangle Teezer for your dog.

Af ter three years of tr ials and test ing we have created two specialised grooming brushes, one for detangling and one for de-shedding. Just as our

hairbrushes revolut ionised the hair industry with our innovative teeth, we’re doing the same with Pet Teezer.

First ly, introducing our detangling brush. Using a similar patented two-t ier teeth technology to our Tangle Teezer brushes, the longer teeth work to remove dir t, confidently reaching down to the undercoat, whilst the shor ter teeth smooth and detangle the hair to protect against mat t ing.

Secondly, our de-shedding brush. With slightly st i f fer teeth than our detangling brush, the longer teeth work to remove dir t whilst the shor ter teeth pick up any loose hair and help to de-shed thick and thermal undercoats. The configuration of our teeth mean hair is held in the brush, and not lef t on your

carpet.

For those pets with a shorter coat, use either brush to massage and create shine. This is a great bonding experience for you and your pooch, and they love it.
