Independent schools in Maryland aregoing green in many ways. Sometimesthey do it from the ground up and some-times from the roof down.

Friends Community School in Col-lege Park did it from the ground up whenit constructed a 27,000-square-foot, $5.7million classroom building out of strawbales in 2007. The stacked bales, madeof straw grown locally and covered withmud and then plaster, make up the wallsof the school. The building also features agreen roof, a rain garden and bio-retentionareas, radiant floor heating and waterlessurinals.

A key benefit of straw-bale construc-tion is the insulation it provides, saving theschool money on energy.

“We are generally pleased with it interms of being environmentally friendlyand having a wonderful insulating mate-rial,” says Larry Clements, head of school.“It’s inexpensive and should live a longlife.”

Roland Park Country School inBaltimore went green from the roof downwhen it built its entire athletic complex asa green building that provides both ener-gy and water efficiency. A key feature isits 14,000-square-foot green roof, which is“performing great,” according to NancyMugele, the school’s director of commu-nications.

“It has grown well and the routinemaintenance we have performed has notbrought any issues to light,” she says.

The plants on the green roof absorb ra-diant energy so that it doesn’t enter thebuilding, while a reflective white roof min-imizes the heat island effects of tradi-tional roofs by reflecting radiant heat en-ergy back into the atmosphere. In eachroom, an occupancy sensor turns thelights off when people exit.

Rainwater refrigeratorThe large number of windows in the

athletic center harvest daylight while min-imizing heat transfer, and the building’scooling tower cools stored rainwater, which then passes through a compres-sor, much like a refrigerator, to cool thebuilding.

The athletic complex has a high-effi-

ciency boiler that heats the building andprovides hot water for sinks and showersso no hot water heater is needed. Carbondioxide sensors in the gym control theamount of outside air brought in by theventilation system.

For water efficiency, the green roof isplanted with special grasses and sedumthat absorb water, filter pollutants andreduce storm water runoff. The white roofis designed to capture rainwater and chan-nel it into a 10,000-gallon tank, where it isstored and used in the building’s coolingtower to reduce the use of city water.Low-flow fixtures are throughout thebuilding in showers, toilets and sinks.

On the playing fields and north parkinglot, the storm water runs off into largestorage tanks under the fields, where it isfiltered before trickling slowly into theground. Native plantings are used aroundthe complex, reducing the need to irri-gate and thereby saving more water.

The Athletic Center at Roland Parkhas gone green in the use of materialsand resources in its construction and out-fitting. Several rooms have floors madefrom the floor of the old gym. Cabinetry ismade from wood certified by the ForestStewardship Council, and many of thecabinets were manufactured locally fromwood harvested within 500 miles of theschool.

Countertops were made from recycledpaper products. Recycled material alsowas used in the steel beams of the build-

ing, carpet, linoleum, ceiling tiles, and therubber mat on the running track.

All paint, caulking and adhesives used inthe building have low levels of volatile or-ganic compounds. All cleaning productsare biodegradable and have low toxicity.

Teaching a lessonEreni Malfa, who teachers upper

school science at Roland Park, uses thewhole athletic complex as an example ofgreen architecture and construction in asenior elective course on sustainable de-sign and engineering.

“We talk about the green roof in termsof its impact on the heating and cooling ofthe building and storm water manage-ment,” Malfa says. “We also discuss it as ahabitat.”

The Gibson Island Country School,in Pasadena, has plans for a green roof, says Tim Decker, science teacher and en-vironmental program director. Meanwhile,it uses rain barrels and rain gardens tocollect water.

“We sit right on the Magothy Riverand we’re trying to keep all our water onthe property without running off. It re-plenishes the aquifer and helps feed ourgardens and water the grass,” Deckersays.

The school also is seeking grants to in-stall solar tubes to bring in natural light, and for hands-free faucets in the bath-rooms to save water.

Its students helped build a geodesic

greenhouse on the campus last year, where the school grows its own food, with scraps going into a compost heap.

Nothing goes to waste “We recycle just about everything,”

Decker declares. “We have trash-free dayswhen we try not to produce any trash atall. Everything is recycled or composted.

“We’re trying to do all we can withoutmajor amounts of money, because wedon’t have that.”

Bullis School, in Potomac, recentlyunveiled the largest solar electric powersystem at a private school in the Wash-ington area. Its 540 solar panels will pro-duce 143,000 kilowatt-hours of electricityannually, supplying 18 to 20 percent ofthe annual electricity needs for theschool’s Blair Family Center for theArts.

St. Martin’s-in-the-Field DaySchool, in Severna Park, is looking forchanges in small but effective ways.

“We’re trying to obtain a larger recy-cling dumpster and we’ll have rain barrelsconnected soon,” reports Cynthia Barry, li-brarian and communications director.

“We have lots of good ideas and theydon’t always involve construction but doinvolve the way people use the spacearound them. We are making smallchanges that can have big differences,”Barry says.

Green schools aren’t entirely trouble-free. At Friends Community School, forexample, a water problem developed withthe straw bales, perhaps because of im-properly installed window casings, re-ports Dave Woolley-Wilson, executive di-rector of the Green Building Institute inJessup. “Now they have moldy strawbales,” he says.

“The greatest enemy of straw-bale con-struction is water,” asserts Andrew Mor-rison, whose Oregon-based company, A.C.Morrison Construction, specializes instraw-bale construction.

Clements, the head of school, declinedto talk on the record about the problem, except to say “We’re working at it.” Theschool has no other green-building plansright now, says Clements.

“We just moved into this,” he says.“We’d like to spend a few years in thisnew site before thinking about any futuresteps.”

For some schools, going green meansenergy-efficient construction or majorrenovations. At others, students them-selves are taking the initiative.

At Krieger Schechter Day School inBaltimore County, seventh-graders in-stalled a butterfly garden, and first-gradersmade signs reminding people to turn outlights in rooms not being used.

At the Park School in Pikesville, stu-dents painted roofs white to deflect sum-mertime heat and examined school pur-chases, with an eye toward finding eco-friendlier alternatives at similar prices.

And at the Bryn Mawr School in Bal-timore, students helped drastically cutthe use of bottled water, by first creatinga display showing how many bottles areused each week, and then by finding adonor to provide non-toxic bottles for ev-eryone in the school to refuse.

The students even tested the water atall the school fountains, to see which onestasted best and which ones had good wa-ter pressure for filling the bottles.

“At that point, we had our cafeteriamanager stop providing bottled water inthe cafeteria,” said Mary Beth Kircher, environmental coordinator and sciencedepartment chair for the Upper School.

A helping hand Inspired by growing awareness of the

fragility of the planet and spurred by or-ganizations such as the Maryland Asso-ciation for Environmental and Out-door Education (MAEOE), students andfaculty are finding creative ways to con-serve energy, protect watersheds, reducewaste, and more.

Bronwyn Mitchell, executive director ofMAEOE, noted that the nonprofit organi-zation has been running the MarylandGreen Schools Award Program since 1999.

Schools, both public and private, qual-ify by proving that they have a holisticapproach to environmental education thatincludes staff training, integration of en-vironmental topics in classroom subjects, celebration of efforts to reduce environ-mental impact, and sustained partner-ships between schools and communities.

In 2008, the last year for which a figureis available, 70 schools in Maryland qual-ified as green, she said. Schools must re-certify every four years, and she is grati-fied that 95 percent of eligible schoolshave done so.

Independent schools that have beenrecognized as green include Saint Mary’sElementary School in Annapolis, St.Andrew’s United Methodist Churchand Day School in Edgewater, the Har-bour School of Annapolis, Bryn MawrSchool, Roland Park Country School inBaltimore, St. John’s Parish Day Schoolin Ellicott City, and many more.

Lessons from the TorahKrieger Schechter Day School was cer-

tified in 2008, said Saundra Madoff, lowerschool administrator and a teacher there.“It was a unified effort,” she said.

She said the school, which serves Jew-ish students in kindergarten through grade8, had long promoted environmental ef-forts such as recycling, saving energy andcomposting.

“Being a Jewish day school, a lot of thevalues of the Torah have to do with pro-tecting the environment,” she said.

But the decision to become a GreenSchool crystallized the effort and prompt-ed programs such as field trips and learn-ing festivals with environmental themes, she said.

Students are expanding the butterflygarden by adding benches and other fea-tures, and each classroom has a “greenteam” that makes sure items are being

recycled and composted, she said.Kircher, the environmental coordina-

tor and chair of the Science Departmentfor Bryn Mawr’s Upper School, said stu-dents bring tremendous energy to pro-jects such as the push to eliminate bottledwater on campus. An after-school clubcalled Students for Environmental Actionis busy on many fronts, she said.

The students hope to sign a companyto compost school food, and are figuringout how to get the school fleet of vehiclesto run on biodiesel. Other students haveplans for removing invasive plants fromschool property, she said.

Crunching the numbersAt the Park School, Daniel Jacoby is

faculty advisor to an afterschool clubcalled the Climate Change Committeeat Park. About a dozen kids meet once aweek, but others are also involved in arange of projects aimed at reducing car-bon emissions at the school, he said.

Two years ago, Jacoby said, studentsdecided to calculate carbon emissions atthe school, publish the results, then figureout ways to improve the numbers. TheirAnnual Carbon Dioxide Emissions Re-port measures electricity use, gasolineand diesel purchases, and paper use.

To reduce emissions, the studentspainted several roofs white and advocat-ed for a senior class gift of a solar-pow-ered hot water heater for the gym oneyear, and a system that improves HVACefficiency the following year.

Park School students have alsoworked to improve the condition ofMoores Branch, a tributary of the JonesFalls. Jacoby and students have receiveda $20,000 grant from the ChesapeakeBay Foundation to install a rain gardenat the bottom of the school’s parking lot tofilter runoff. “They’re going to do the workthis spring,” he said. “It’s a big project.”

The following pages list independent

primary and secondary schools across

the state of Maryland. They include

schools both secular and religious that

are not part of the state’s public school

systems. The list is based on infor-

mation provided by the Web site of the

Maryland State Department of Edu-

cation (MSDE) and by the schools

themselves. In many cases we talked

to school representatives; in some

cases we relied on school Web sites.

Our list does not include independent

schools that offer only nursery school

or kindergarten classes. However,

those schools are listed by county on

the MSDE Web site, www.maryland-

publicschools.org. The phone number

at the department is (410) 767-0100.

Tuition figures are the latest available.

Many schools had not set fees for

2010-2011 when we gathered this in-

formation, and schools often charge

extra fees that they do not consider

part of tuition. We recommend that

readers contact schools directly to

check on tuition and to ask about ad-

ditional fees, enrollment policies and

waiting lists.

Readers also should be aware that

just because the state licenses a

school to teach certain grades, that

does not mean all of those grades are

offered.

It is important to us (and to our

readers) to keep the information in

this semi-annual guide as accurate as

possible. Please bring any discrepan-

cies to our attention by e-mailing the
