PRE-OWNED PURCHASES AT ‘ALLTIME HIGH’New research from Nielsen claimed “usedgame purchasing is at all-time highs in2009, looking back since 2006”. UK retailer GAME and US retailer GameStophave both reported similar findings intheir recent financial updates.

In addition, Nielsen claimedthat gamers are playing moreevery week than last year, too,with the average hours spent infront of the screen each weeknow at 16.6 – up from the 16hours or less reported in the sameperiod in 2008.

However, none of this has dampenedthe enthusiasm of the games buying public, it seems. 74 per cent of those surveyed stated that the credit crunch willnot lessen their games spending, eventhough half of them admitted that timeswere tough at the moment.

“35 per cent of gamers claim they arespending more money or plan to spendmore on gaming this year than last yearand 39 per cent claim they are spendingthe same amount,” the report added.

UK WEEKLY GAME SALES REMAINSTEADY DURING HEAT WAVEAccording to MCV calculations, based ontoday’s GfK-ChartTrack/ELSPA weekly report, £20.1 million for the weekend ending July 4th. Unit sales dipped two percent to 836,461.

Game sales are typically low during niceweather, which makes these results all the

more remarkable, coming during a UK summer heat wave. Sales were aided bynew releases including Harry Potter andthe Half-Blood Prince, Tiger Woods andCall of Juarez: Bound In Blood.

UBISOFT GRABS HEROESOVER EUROPE

A third brand has joinedBlazing Angels and TomClancy’s HAWX in Ubisoft’sflight simulator stable –former Atari title Heroes

Over Europe.The game, a sequel to

2005’s Heroes of the Pacific,saw its initial release window come

and go but should now at least have a secure route to market.

“We are pleased to be bringing HeroesOver Europe to retailers worldwide,”Ubisoft’s senior vice president of sales andmarketing Tony Key stated, according toDestructoid.

“The action-packed gameplay and realistic imagery in Heroes Over Europewill help bring some of history's most exciting air battles to life for an experiencethat gamers will enjoy.”

Heroes Over Europe will be out on Xbox360, PS3 and PC this September.

BLU-RAY SALES BOOM IN UKNew numbers from the British Video Association showed that 3.1m of the hi-defdiscs have been sold so far in 2009 – that’sa 231 per cent increase on the same periodlast year.

How has the market been for you sofar this year? The market has again been busy in theopening part of the year, although therehave been no major releases like lastyear’s Wii Fit and GTA. We are constantlylooking at new offers and deals on bothnew and pre-owned stock to keep or business successful and competitive.

Has the loss of Woolworths and Zavvibeen a benefit to you at all? I think this will have given us some extrasales and customers, but we didn’t reallysee either of these companies as directcompetition. What they had to offer onthe gaming front was pretty poor, frompricing through to service.

What has been performing particularlywell for you? UFC: Undisputed by THQ has performedamazingly well and I think this is due tothe strong marketing campaign that hassupported the title.

What’s been underperforming? Wii consoles are really slow at the momentso to push these through we are doing

some really competitive pricing on boththe solus console and when bought in abundle package.

What makes your store so unique? We tend not to see our store as unique.We try and be more like a national storein all areas of the business, as the nationals tend to do really well so this isthe kind of service we try to offer.
