Welcome to Third Grade!
· I will introduce you to third grade expectations and to our classroom.
· If you have any questions during my presentation, please make a note on the powerpoint and I will answer them at the end.
Mrs. Newberry--About Me and my Family
· I have been married for 26 years, and have two sons; Nathan is 20 and will start his third year at UCR, Shane is 18 and is starting at Mt. San Jacinto this month.
· This is my 24th year of teaching, 19th year in 3rd grade
· I have a Bachelors of Arts in Administration Studies and Psychology from UCR. I earned my Teaching Credential from Redlands University, and my Masters degree from Grand Canyon University. I also have my CLAD certificate, and am almost finished with my GATE certificate.
My Goals· To give students the academic
instruction they need to master the 3rd Grade Common Core standards.
· To have students learn to set goals, determine the steps to meet the goals, and accomplish these goals.
· To give students the desire to become a life long learner.

Class Subjects· The subjects we cover during third

Reading· Unit 1 - Exploring Realistic Fiction- Writing a realistic fiction picture
book · Unit 2 - Exploring Expository Text- Demonstrating a Science
Concept · Unit 3 - Message and Meaning of Fictional Text- Folktale, Fairy tales,
Fables. Destination Animation· Unit 4 - Making Connections Within Informational Text- Researching
and presenting about a famous person· Unit 5 - Using Informational Text to Develop Opinions-Making a
presentation on the perfect classroom pet· Unit 6- Literature Studies Across Genre- Producing a play, poems
Writing - Narratives:· Provide a context (setting) within
which an action takes place. · Develop the characters to support the
plot.· Include well-chosen details to develop
the plot. · Provide insight into why the selected
incident is memorable.
Writing-Expository· Students create a multi-paragraph
paper after note taking and researching facts.· Develop a topic sentence, supporting details
and a concluding statement.· Include simple supporting facts with details,
based on research. · Pet Unit--using persuasive structure that is clear
and coherent.· Famous American– research report.
Writing--Evaluation and Revision
· Revise drafts to improve the coherence and logical progression of ideas by using an established rubric.
Research
· Understand the structure and organization of various reference materials (e.g., dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, encyclopedia, and internet).
Penmanship
· Write legibly in cursive or joined italic, allowing margins and correct spacing between letters in a word and words in a sentence.
Math· By the end of grade three, students deepen
their understanding of place value and problem solving skills using addition, subtraction, and multiplication of whole numbers.
· Students estimate, measure, and describe objects in space.
· They use patterns to help solve problems. · They represent number relationships and
conduct simple probability experiments.
SciencePhysical Science· Energy and matter have multiple forms and
can be changed from one form to another.
Life Science· Adaptations in physical structure or behavior
may improve an organism’s chance for survival.
Earth Science· Objects in the sky move in regular and
predictable patterns.
Social StudiesContinuity and Change
· Students in grade three learn more about our connections to the past and the ways in which particularly local, but also regional and national, government and traditions have developed and left their marks on current society, providing common memories.
· Emphasis is on the physical and cultural landscape of California, including the study of American Indians, the subsequent arrival of immigrants, and the impact they have had in forming the character of our contemporary society.
New Report to Parents
Classroom Community· Our classroom community is a part of the
Positive Behavior Intervention Program our school adopted last year. In our community, we have expectations to help us get along with each other.
· Our classroom expectations are:· Be respectful· Be responsible· Be safe.
We also have expectations for each location on campus.
HUSD Dress Code· Classroom teachers and school personnel will
monitor students clothing to make sure it is appropriate.
· Clothing that is not appropriate, includes; · any type of garment with a sports logo of a professional
team· short shorts (student must be able to hold arms down and
fingers cover the short pants)· flip flops are not permitted by students for any reason. · appropriate clothing for PE is expected on PE days.
· Attendance is crucial for student success. Even missing the first ten minutes, puts them behind for the day.
· School starts at 7:36 A.M. 7:40 is tardy· If you aren’t in the classroom by the time
the second bell rings, please check in at the school office before coming to class.
· Parent notes or phone calls are still expected to clear absences.
AttendanceTardiness
Emergency Information· Current information on your child’s emergency card
is essential. · Please update any information regarding a child’s
contact information. · updated address, phone, and authorized persons to pick up
student are a must!
· Any person given permission by the legal guardian to sign their child out must provide a current Picture I.D. as well as being named on the Emergency Card.
· All changes on the Emergency Card must be performed by the legal guardian and in person.
Homework· About 45 minutes of homework is assigned
every night.· Math homework is assigned Mon. – Thurs.· Students are expected to read a minimum of
100 minutes each week.· The homework packet is given on Friday and
is due on the following Friday.
Class Information· Homework/Communicators (RED
Folders)· Take home and return to school daily· Math homework- check for accuracy.· Homework Packet- Passed out on Friday,
due the following Friday: Reading, writing, and spelling.
· Newsletters on front of packet· Weekly Reviews- signed and returned· Snacks and Water Bottles
· Communication: School Website, Class Website,

Field Trips
· We will visit Santa Rosa Plateau where students will have the opportunity to complete activities in the nature center participate and hike the nature trail.
· We will not visit the EMWD water reclamation facility this year, but they will come to our school and set up a fun learning center assembly.
· Possible trip to WVHS to see the fall or spring production.
Service Projects· Our class will collect Box Tops and
Campbell's soup lables.· We may have a “Ramona Animal
Shelter” project, possibly with the whole school.
Ways to Get Involved · PTA, School Site Council, English Learners
Advisory Council· Family nights/PTA special events, Cultural Fair· Special class projects, materials donations.· Flat Stanley, Science Fair, Play Participation· Field Trips· Monitor your child’s progress daily and
through progress reports, conferences, and homework.
· COMMUNICATION IS KEY!!!!
