The Healthcare industry is experiencing a historic transition at lightning speed. Not since the introduction of Medicare nearly 50 years ago have hospitals, doctors and patients faced so many changes.

Despite this uncertain time in healthcare, the direction of the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation is clear: to identify initiatives that benefit our patients in northern Michigan.

As new technology and equipment become available and as new models of care are identified, McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation stands by the Hospital’s commitment to provide care as we expect for our own family. The significance of each gift goes beyond a simple dollar value; it changes the lives of residents and resorters - our neighbors, friends and family – by ensuring that the care they need is available when they need it most.

Thanks to you, our family of generous donors, McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation has disbursed more than $1,823,030 in the first three quarters of our fiscal year (October 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014). The following pages illustrate how your gifts are hard at work changing the lives of patients throughout McLaren Northern Michigan. VitalCare Adult Day CenterThanks to the support of dedicated donors through the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, family members and caregivers can count on the VitalCare Adult Day Center to provide a safe and engaging environment for their loved ones. The Adult Day Center is an excellent option for family members who are unable to be at home alone during the day or those who could benefit from increased social contact. Center participants enjoy conversation, participate in art projects, play cards, solve puzzles, read, improve their health in our exercise room or enjoy individual quiet time.

McLaren northern Michigan Cheboygan Campus

McLaren Northern Michigan is committed to the availability of exceptional care - close to home - for patients in the Cheboygan Area. Access to a higher level of care is seamless and highly skilled friends and neighbors continue to grow in their healthcare careers. Thanks to the support of generous donors, patients have access to 24/7 emergency services, outpatient surgery and procedures, primary and specialty care physicians, rehabilitation and therapy services close to home. So far in 2014, gifts have funded the following equipment for the Surgical Services Department:

Cheboygan Campus

From minor to life-threatening injuries or illnesses, the Cheboygan Emergency Department has the experience and equipment to handle anything that comes through the door. “The McLaren Northern Michigan Cheboygan Campus Emergency Department provides big-city care in a hometown setting,” said Emergency Room Physician Ken Parada, D.O.

In 2012, McLaren opened the doors to the Cheboygan Campus Emergency Department with its community in mind. “The support of this community has been so helpful and positive,” said Shari Schult, Director of Cheboygan Campus Operations. “It’s great to have this community be part of this positive transition.”

McLaren’s commitment and appreciation for the community it serves radiates among the ED staff. It is apparent that average care is not an option. “We pride ourselves on exceeding every expectation. Our staff has top-level education, extensive training and the highest commitment and pride,” added Emergency Room Supervisor, Jane Poquette.

The McLaren Northern Michigan Cheboygan Emergency Department is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. It is accredited by the The Joint Commission.

When our doors opened in 1992, our goal was to provide a friendly and comfortable home for patients who needed 24-hour nursing care. Over the years, new community needs emerged, one of which was to provide short-term care for patients recovering from a recent hospitalization after an illness or injury. To best meet these needs and serve our community, Boulder Park Terrace, an affiliate of McLaren Northern Michigan, evolved to become an award-winning Subacute Rehabilitation Facility.

With a dedicated in-house team of occupational and physical therapists, speech/language pathologists and certified rehabilitation nurses, Boulder Park Terrace is the perfect place for you or your loved one to receive care after surgery, illness or injury, in order to transition back home.

This year, we are planning an exciting expansion to provide private rooms and more space for our rehabilitation patients. We hope you will be part of this project by making a gift to the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation.

Boulder Park Terrace is a 61-bed skilled nursing facility and a Subacute Rehabilitation Facility located in beautiful Charlevoix, Michigan. Named among the best nursing homes by US News & World Report in 2013 and 2014, Boulder Park Terrace boasts a high satisfaction rating! “After I broke my leg in December of last year, I went to the rehabilitation unit at Boulder Park Terrace. Honestly, I had no idea how bad my injury was. Thankfully, everyone there – the nurses, the aids, the physical therapists – were spectacular. I benefitted from core strengthening, occupational therapy and learning how to transfer myself back and forth until I graduated to the use of a walker. It was truly the best place I could have been. Not only did I make a lot of friends, I thought the facility was warm and inviting. I’m glad I was there. AWARD-WINNING CARE McLaren Northern Michigan is a 2014 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in two areas of acute care: infection control and inpatient clinical achievement. The program is a partnership between the governor’s office and MPRO, an independent non-profit recognized as a national leader in health care quality and medical review. The award measures performance and safety criteria over a 3-year period.

The Cardiovascular Unit at McLaren Northern Michigan has been awarded the silver level AACN Beacon Award. This accomplishment represents one of many significant milestones on the unit’s journey to optimal outcomes and exceptional patient care.
