“A typical bare-metal Windows server configuration is 144% cheaper than EC2!”

“The cost of cloud must come down significantly for outsourcing a complete data centre to make economic sense”

A Smart car is much better than an F1 because ...

Uses less fuel

Costs less to operate

People don’t crash them intentionally

Is much safer

Much cheaper

Not as noisy

...but that is a load of rubbish!!

...mhhh so what is wrong then?

The report has a few BIG flaws:

1. Simply ignores to quantify the value of agility, speed, flexibility, scalability, pay-as-you-go

2. Has a legacy app point of view

3. Pricing wrong – ok, my view!

So, how can YOU benefit from the Cloud then?

Page 9: McKinsey got it wrong!

08/04/2023 CloudCamp Scotland September 2009 9

#1 Don’tsAvoid large-memory single-instance apps Expensive Not enough CPU

horsepower

Page 10: McKinsey got it wrong!

#2 Don’tsAvoid legacy apps with extremely high IOPS Not fast enough Is going to be resolved

in the near future though

#3 Do’sStart thinking in small ‘bricks’ no specialised HW for each

project anymore!!! start to standardise

building blocks – CPU & storage

use the small granularity to your advantage

David Stott Building, Detroit,133m high, 32 floors, built in bricks!!!

Page 12: McKinsey got it wrong!

#4 Do’sInvest only in modular, multi-tier, horizontally scalable apps Web Apps you can load

balance Apps with clear separation of

front-end, application & database

Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) generally are suitable

Page 13: McKinsey got it wrong!

#5 Do’sUse tools like

Intelligent Load Balancers

Queuing Memcache Hadoop New style databases Write your own monitor

Page 14: McKinsey got it wrong!

08/04/2023 CloudCamp Scotland September 2009 14

#6 Do’s Use a platform that helps to scale

RightScale GigaSpaces Microsoft Azure

Page 15: McKinsey got it wrong!

08/04/2023 CloudCamp Scotland September 2009 15

#7 Do’sMake use of the flexibility you have

Create skeleton infrastructures

Dynamically provision when load occurs

Decommission when not needed anymore
