Your Partners for 2012

2012 is set to be the busiest period in European display and branding history. This is a result of London 2012, Euro 2012 and the Golden Jubilee celebrations. There is also a major uplift in the museum and gallery sectors. The last significant spike in activity was back in 1999 on the lead up to the Millennium celebrations, but this period is set to be in the region of ten times more active.
The ‘Olympic’ effect will not just touch London but will spread throughout the country with every major town and city branded, coupled with sponsor events throughout the year. There is also an increase in general marketing spend leading to a shortage of capacity in the UK.
McKenzie Clark have been planning since 2009 for this spike in activity and we are following a ‘twin-track’ approach giving our existing clients comfort that we can partner them through this period but also have extra capacity for large event projects throughout 2012 and beyond.
We are expanding our production, project management and client teams to ensure that we fulfil your projects to the high standard that McKenzie Clark have been renowned for over our 50 year history.

At McKenzie Clark we don’t brush environmental concerns under the carpet. Nor do we try and ‘green-wash’ you into thinking we have the answer to all ills.
Instead we have a sensible environmental policy that we are really proud of.
First of all, we’re ISO14001 accredited, therefore we are devoted to reduce, re-use and recycle wherever possible. We also endeavour to find and develop new eco-friendly alternatives to commonly used substrates such as PVC. There’s no doubt PVC based products have their benefits – cost, flexibility, durability, fire-rating and print quality. But, and it’s a very large but, PVC is pretty controversial when it comes to the environment.
We’ve also replaced harmful solvent inks with environmentally friendly UV curing inks. Our new inks are certified as being free of volatile organic chemical compounds (VOCs)which can affect the environment. Our modern print technology offers a 20-30% better print coverage so less ink can be used.
We take our clients’ and any other specific environmental requirements very seriously – you can trust us to use the specific materials and processes that fit in with your own environmental objectives.
Secondly, we strongly believe that all businesses have a duty of care that extends beyond complying with the law of taking care of the environment, so we are working hard to reduce our own carbon emissions and produce large format graphics in a more sustainable, environmentally friendly way, reducing the risks of unnecessary pollution.
Our factory and office space was custom built in 2007, allowing us to incorporate all sorts of green features including: top notch insulation – reducing energy consumption for heating; an evaporating cooling system – producing no harmful emissions and consuming less than 10% of the electricity required for air-conditioning; movement sensors – to automatically turn off lights.
And finally, we understand that the responsible disposal of graphics is an essential consideration in any project. We offer our clients an eco-friendly disposal service where we can plan structured collection, sorting and either recycling or incineration of waste avoiding the need for landfill.
Whatever your requirement, you can rely on us to advise you of the latest eco-friendly technology, print processes and materials that are right for you and your brand.

After making the move from conventional photo-processing into the digital revolution, he has succeeded in gathering an incredibly committed team of people at McKenzie Clark. It is his insistence on regular investment that has kept the company at the leading edge of technology.
Graham is also passionate about championing environmentally friendly methods of production – an ethos which is shared by us all at McKenzie Clark.
Andrew AkermanStudio Director
Andrew was the Managing Director of Tempo Typographics Ltd when in 1995 he orchestrated a transfer of business to McKenzie Clark Ltd and the creation of a new company Tempo Graphic Design Ltd.
As Managing Director and shareholder of the new business he worked closely with McKenzie Clark providing an in-house design and artwork resource.
In 2006 the transition was complete when Tempo Graphic Design became a trading division of McKenzie Clark and Andrew became a Director and shareholder.

Project A unique office transformation in Singapore.
The briefWe were asked to create a visual graphic solution for 6 floors of office space in Singapore.
The workPrinting direct to a media with specialist adhesive properties to withstand the humidity of an office environment in Singapore, we produced 2,000 square metres of digitally printed wallpaper, 1,200 metres of manifestation and 100 square metres of duratran.
We then applied these graphics to 6 floors of office space covering floors, walls, office furniture and lockers creating an instant visual impact, transforming the space entirely. We completed this unique graphic installation with just 2-3 weeks production time and 3 weeks installation.
The resultUnilever and the design agency Playgroup were very impressed, especially with our consultative approach to the project, quality of the products used and the professionalism of the installation team.

Project The refurbishment of the London flagship store.
The briefOur client asked us for an interior branding solution for their flagship store in Saville Row.
The space was a two storey area housing a ground floor retailing space with newly expanded 1st floor gallery, housing some of the most amazing military coats, helmets, swords and general military paraphernalia, part of the famous Gieves Military Archive.
The architecture is classic and sublime rising 4.5 metres above ground level. CEO John Durning felt that the area was compromised by a plain ceiling. Together with interior designer James Eyers the idea of creating a suspending piece of modern art and hanging mannequins was borne.
The workMcKenzie Clark proposed a fabric frame system to cover the 9 metre x 4 metre ceiling. This system consisted of 7 separate aluminium frames to best fit within the joist structure of the ceiling taking account of the inconsistencies in the old ceilings measurements. An original artwork owned by Gieves and Hawkes was scanned and the
graphic reproduced onto an environmentally-friendly Polyester fabric. Each graphic section was held into the frames using silicon kaydar. James Eyers designed a mannequin suspension system allowing mannequins dressed in military uniform to be suspended 3.6 metres below the graphical ceiling. A juxtaposition between contemporary and heritage was created.
The resultThe Map Room has been reported as the “crowning glory” of the re-fit with the graphical ceiling becoming a real talking point.

ilProject Office store graphics.
The briefOur client asked us to produce interior store graphics for their 103 stores and all concessions. We were required to produce interior graphics for their top ten stores for installation by McKenzie Clark and also a solution that could be distributed to all other stores and installed by the Office store staff in conjunction with the main campaign.
In addition, our client asked us to produce a magnetic graphic display solution in a further twelve stores to be installed by McKenzie Clark.
The workWorking closely with the designer, we provided guidance and advice regarding the creation and supply of artwork suitable for the large format graphics.
We produced 11,590 graphic items including printed repositionable vinyl, magnetic wallpaper panels, cut vinyl and window display elements as well as POS items for each store.
All printed vinyl elements to be produced from artwork were produced direct to repositionable vinyl and magnetic graphics for ease of installation by store staff. Working with the Office marketing team, bespoke display kits were distributed depending on graphic areas available and individual layouts at each store.
We then scheduled 22 store installs across the country with individual graphic display distribution to a further 93 stores. The production time for this project was completed within two weeks, with collation and distribution completed within 4 days. Installations across the country were completed the week following, to coincide with the campaign launch. The further magnetic displays within twelve Office stores were installed within an agreed schedule fitting in with any access limitations and requirements.
The resultThe client was very please, saying “a big thank you to all involved – glad we have been able to work together and hope it continues.”

Project Stadium rebrand for key sponsors King Power and Air Asia.
The briefLeicester City Football Club tasked us to produce new branding for their stadium. This included all re-brand items for the stadium exterior, bowl, concourse and club store facade.
The workIn order to start the process every element of the stadium needed to be audited for location, size and quantity. This was completed in two days and a ‘Look Book’ produced, showcasing all elements with variations of the creative.
The creative was narrowed down and a definitive canvas document produced. All items were then artworked and sent for final client sign off. Work had to progress at speed to meet a key date in the LCFC fixture calendar. This meant the project was scoped, artworked, approved, produced and installed over a 7 day period.
The resultThe key date was met and all the re-brand implemented – the client was extremely pleased with the overall look and impressed with McKenzie Clark’s ability to turn around a diverse and complex project on time and on budget.

Project Hospital development hoarding.
The briefGuy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital wanted an exterior hoarding system that was different from the usual timber post format.
The workWe created a hoarding solution with a much smoother and flatter surface than normal MDF or Dibond hoarding surfaces, produced from recycled plastic hoarding panels.
We pre-wrapped 180 panels with print to self adhesive vinyl with anti graffiti seal. Each panel was 500mm (w) x 2500mm (h). The panels were then bolted together on site by our installations team.
We then applied 44 linear meters of cut vinyl lettering to entrance area wall, also made from Kwik-Kliks recycled panels.
The resultThe hoarding panels completely changed the look surrounding the hospital. Our client was particularly impressed with the smooth finish on each of the panels.La

Project Carphone Warehouse advertising graphics.
The briefOur client asked us to provide an advertising solution at their site on the A40 in Acton, the key factor being the employees could see out and have natural light still coming through the large glazed sides of the building.
The workWe printed direct onto a one way vinyl film which is perforated allowing you to see through whilst allowing light to penetrate. We then laminated the one way perforated vinyl with an optically clear seal to prevent the holes collecting dirt and grime, also making the glass easier to clean.
We managed this job within 5 days from receipt of artwork.
The resultOur client was very impressed with how the solution met their needs.

Project Beckham bus branding.
The briefYahoo asked us to wrap their corporate events bus in new campaign graphics for the 2010 World Cup.
The new graphics were in relation to a recent David Beckham interview that Yahoo had organised which was streamed on-line to over 19 countries.
The workA full survey was carried out on the measurements of the bus in order to produce accurate CAD drawings of the new campaign which were then sent to the client for approval.
Once the artwork was produced, we printed direct to self-adhesive vehicle wrap vinyl to cover the bus panels, and contravision, a perforated substrate which you can see through and allows light to penetrate, to cover the windows.
Before the new graphics could be applied, the existing bus graphic wrap had to be removed and each panel had to be cleaned in order for the new graphic wrap to be applied with the highest quality finish.
The resultYahoo loved the look and feel of the striking new imagery covering the bus and couldn’t wait to take it along to the next corporate event.

Project 2012 BP UK, Tanker Fleet branding.
The briefLandor asked us to produce eye-catching, colourful tanker graphic wraps to promote 6 British Olympic/ Paralympics BP Ambassadors across 3 different types of tanker trailer. The various graphics would then be applied relating to which region each athlete was from in the UK.
The workWorking closely with Landor, we collated the three types of vehicle measurements and test applied printed vinyl to one of each BP tanker at their central UK transport hub in the West Midlands. We then produced stunning vehicle graphics for 44 BP tankers utilising a specialist bubble-free vinyl material with added gloss seal to protect the graphic during its 18 month campaign life cycle.
From concept to installation, this project was completed all within 18 weeks.
The resultLandor was really impressed with the result. We’re sure each athlete tanker design will be a big hit within their region.

Project Chelsea FC Museum.
The briefOur client asked us to create a high-visual interior and exterior branding solution whilst at the same time providing visitors with the important directional signage to guide them around the football grounds.
The new imagery to be used in this exciting campaign was to lead visitors through the story of Chelsea FC, displaying a mixture of historic and up-to-date images of Chelsea players and memorable moments over the years.
The workAfter an initial site survey of the desired branding area, we produced a range of interior and exterior graphics solutions in a variety of applications to create striking action graphics throughout the club.
From artwork and imagery supplied by Chelsea FC, we printed direct to aluminium composite to create a hoarding-like graphic at the entrance of the club. We then produced a giant aluminium composite cut-out of Chelsea player Petr Cech which was applied alongside the exterior entrance graphic, and Fernando Torres to be applied on an interior wall next to a uniquely branded visitor tunnel.
The tunnel was designed for visitors to walk through, leading them to the Chelsea FC Museum on the 1st floor. Self-adhesive fire-rated vinyl was applied to the tunnel and also to the side wall providing every visitor with a high impact branding experience.
The resultVisitors have really enjoyed the high quality branding and historic wall sections.

Project Giant branding banners for Arsenal FC’s Emirates Stadium.
The briefWe were asked to create an engineered branding solution for the external areas surrounding the new stadium, using 8 high-impact banners and the permanently fixed steel frame to hold them. The construction and imagery needed to augment the stadium architecture, and deliver a premium look and feel.
The workTo execute this high-profile project, we worked with Arsenal’s brand partners 2020, who designed the 8 different artworks depicting famous Arsenal legends past and present, huddled together as they do before each game, circling, looking into, and embracing the stadium. Full site surveys were carried out to produce the essential stress calculations, and to put in place the necessary health and safety requirements for such a large outdoor project.
The client required a high degree of flexibility in the overall solution, so as to allow different poster campaigns/marketing messages to be featured in the frames. Our solution not only achieved this, but also allowed the replacement of individual cores of each banner, without the need to replace the entire image.
Each of the 8 banners required a custom-designed, galvanised steel frame to be permanently fixed to the stadium core. These allowed each banner to be suspended in a safe and secure manner.

Measuring approximately 40 metres wide by 15 metres high, the graphic elements were printed in 5 sections, and designed to fit around existing Arsenal logos. We used 350gsm PVC-coated fabric to withstand the North London weather.
All of the graphics will be thermally recycled by the manufacturer after use, creating high amounts of re-usable energy.
The resultThe banners are a stunning success, creating an imposing and stylish display that benefits not only the Arsenal brand but also the stadium architecture. Sp

The briefInnovision asked us to produce an eye-catching, museum-like roadshow for their “Share the journey – Carry the flame” campaign for 2012, encouraging people to take part and nominate someone in their community to “share the journey” and carry the Olympic torch.
The workThe first step to this exciting project was to carry out a site survey and record measurements of the entire roadshow trailer and supporting vehicles in order to produce display designs and recommend graphic applications. After the initial designs had been approved, we then designed and fabricated internally-lit display plinths from clear acrylic to house each Olympic torch.
The interior display graphics of the trailer was printed direct to an eco-friendly gloss substrate and highlighted using soft spotlights.
A unique design of self-adhesive printed graphics was then applied to the exterior panels of the roadshow trailer and each supporting vehicle. The trailer was then ejected from the crowd using four roof mounted windchaser flags and strong pop-up banner exterior branding.
The resultInnovision was delighted with the finished product which was a complicated project due to the multiple bespoke elements.

Project Leaders In Football World Cup bid exhibition.
The briefWe were asked to supply a branding and signage solution to a temporary structure set within Chelsea FC that would take minimal time to install but still look fantastic.
The workWe reconfigured and adapted artwork supplied to enable 350 square metres of canvas graphics to be produced. We then cut the canvas graphics into easy-to-install sections which we then stapled into place on site ensuring that installation times were kept to a minimum.
The resultOur client was really impressed with the result. They were amazed as to how we produced and installed such an eye-catching exhibition space within a 2 day turnaround. M

Project Printworks marketing suite.
The briefWe were asked to create a branding solution for an ‘open canvas’ within a marketing suite.
The workWorking closely with Orbit Design, we printed direct onto canvas and installed aluminium frames to wrap the graphics. We then produced a unique London skyline printed direct to cut rigid PVC which was then mounted within the window to create a stunning, eye-catching display.
We also manufactured MDF floor level indicators to each floor with a crisp spray finish. The panels were then mounted to the wall on split batons.
The resultOrbit Design was “over the moon”. They were amazed how we produced such a stunning interior space within a 5 day turnaround.

Lamb Creative
Project Mapfre Insurance Stand, BIBA 2011 Exhibition, Manchester.
The briefWe were asked to create a stylish, eye-catching exhibition stand within a 4x3 metre area, allowing space for visitors onto the stand and for food and drinks to be dispensed.
The workTo maximize the space within this stand we cladded the walls with stunning oak boarding with built in down-lighters, giving the impression of a much larger space. Small panels of red opal acrylic were mounted to the walls slightly raised with back lighting, creating a light box effect. Larger red translucent acrylic panels with applied grey-backed cut vinyl were then mounted over the top of the frosted panels to create an eye-catching, warm and inviting finish to the back walls.
The bar within the stand was also cladded in oak boarding to blend in with the back walls and housed under-counter storage and a refrigeration unit.
The floor space of this stand was split across two levels to create a further feeling of space and also to create two separate areas for laptop presentations and for bar and buffet access.
The resultLamb Creative was thrilled with the result of this stand, especially how the project was turned around from design concept to installation in only 3 weeks. This stand was stunning… So stunning it won the award for ‘Best Small Stand in Show’.

Project Catlin Stand, BIBA 2011 Exhibition, Manchester.
The briefLamb Creative asked us to create an eye-catching, welcoming exhibition stand that achieves the feeling of height and strong presence within its 6x3 metre space.
The workWorking closely with Lamb Creative, our skilled design team produced this striking open-fronted red and white gloss laminate stand, custom built with integrated storage units and semi-enclosed meeting area.
The back wall, walls and slight ceiling features were made from gloss laminate material with applied cut vinyl with soft spotlighting. Two plasma screens were housed within the walls of the stand along with two panes of clear acrylic, adding to the effect of an open, welcoming stand space. The housed text detail in the centre of the back wall was produced using a new innovative process using Dynajet, a high quality fabric material.
The graphics push into a specialist frame, gripping the fabric leaving a flawless finish. Using this process also allows the graphic to be easily changed for re-use.
The resultLamb Creative was really pleased with the sleek and stylish finish of the custom built stand.

Williams Lea O2
Project Nobbling the Niggles.
The briefThe idea wanted to portray how, by using O2 Broadband, they would squash all your broadband niggles. The sketch idea was a 3D, O2 Home Broadband, lowering onto inflated ‘Niggle’ models that are squashed by the broadband.
The workFrom the outlined brief with ideas and scamps we produced this freestanding mechanical display. The whole unit is run within the sealed floor plinth. The inflatable niggles are set under the text that lowers and rises on a motorised pulley system which triggers the inflatables to enhance the squashed effect.
The text was modelled in MDF with a sprayed finish and set within a clear acrylic cloud.
The mechanism is encased within the disguised framework that has been camouflaged into the translucent backdrop. The design is brought together with a hand polished 15mm acrylic printed landscape.
The resultA very effective animated 3D addition to the total cross media campaign running simultaneously. It sparked plenty of interest with crowds of shoppers hanging around at the window to watch the display.
This window display proved so effective that the client requested its reinstallation following the next scheduled window display.

Project A dynamic 3D wave stand to promote the N97 handset.
The briefWe were asked by Nokia Global to produce an innovative and dynamic 3D stand based on a wave design to promote the new N97 handset. From receiving the architect’s outline design we had just 7 days to create artwork, build all the elements of the stand and install the unit.
The workFrom the architect’s outline, we produced workable drawings which we used to create artwork and build 7 fin-shaped opal light boxes illuminated by LEDs and covered in DTM duratran vinyl. This was fitted 2mm from the edges of the fins to avoid dog-earing and to create a dynamic edge-lit effect.
The 7 fins were set into a plinth to form the basis of the wave effect. The plinth was edge-lit with opal sides reverse printed to clear acrylic and a DTM and sealed floor graphic top. The surfboard was wrapped in vehicle DTM printed wrap vinyl and fitted to the fins to be used as seating.
Linked to the unit was a sound system to demonstrate the handset’s music capabilities, and 2 moving coloured water effect gobos to enhance the dynamic wave-effect design.
The resultNokia loved the stand and were especially delighted at how quickly we had been able to produce artwork and build a bespoke 3D unit incorporating many different elements and requirements.

Project Window and display promoting the N97 handset.
The briefFor the Nokia Navigation campaign, we were asked to produce, install and oversee the design of promotional displays for the Regent Street and Heathrow Terminal 5 stores. The hero handsets were the N97 and N97Mini, as well as a teaser for the N900.
The workTo highlight the handset’s Maps, location and GPS capability, the main design featured a giant model, Big Ben and London cityscape. This was a major challenge to design and illustrate, but was achieved by producing a 3D build of Big Ben and mounting vinyl wrap to it. It featured a working clock with illuminated faces.
The cityscape images were printed to clear vinyl and mounted to 20mm clear laser cut acrylic panels, lit from beneath within the floor plinth. The distinctive speech and arrow marks were then hung or applied to the display for annotation.
The beauty window promotes a teaser campaign for the N900 handset. For this we created a frame box to hold 2 back-to-back screens. The images were cut with an aperture to give the impression of the actual phone screen.
The resultConsidering the enormous challenges to design and execute such a display, the results were stunning. The model of Big Ben caused quite a stir with admiring on-lookers helping increase footfall into the store. The client was delighted, and is considering this type of display for future window campaigns.
