Presentation on current state of graduate and postdoctoral studies at McGill,
including some ideas generated at the joint Board-Senate meeting for
discussion.
BACKGROUND
&
RATIONALE:
This annual presentation updates activities and initiatives undertaken during
last year, and adds some new information and ideas for future
directions.Alongside current data for enrolment of graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows, graduate student funding (in comparison with the G13)
and updates on SKILLSETS (in response to items in the previous Strategic
Plan), some new data from the 2010 Graduate and Professional Sudent Survey
are provided. The presentation also offers some preliminary responses to the
new PhD outcome survey, as well as some ideas generated from the joint
Board-Senate meeting of October 25th on ensuring that McGill is the leading
institution for graduate education in Canada.
The goal of the presentation is to offer Senate an opportunity to discuss
directions for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for the next iteration of the
strategic plan.

Undergraduate education is important to the creation of a stable economy because it providesstudents with foundational knowledge and work skills and prepares college graduates for a widerange of employment options. But it is graduate education that provides students with theadvanced knowledge and skills that will secure our future intellectual leadership in the knowledgeeconomy.
