What is Climate Change?A life principle for which we should all strive is to be a force for nature instead of an egocentric

wad of complaints grumbling that the earth will not dedicate itself to making us content.• Gradual alteration of global temperature due to the

accumulation of greenhouse gases• Gases accumulate due to emissions from industries

that power electronics and other sources that trap radiation and create a blanket around the earth

• May increase violent weather patterns, drought and susceptibility of populations to disease

Definitions• Ecological footprint-the amount of land required by a

person, community, organization, environment or other specific entity required to sustain their use of natural resources.

• Carbon emissions-greenhouse gases within the atmosphere.

• Heterarchy-an organizational system that has a series of connections within a system that has no specific uppermost node.

How does climate change affect organizations?

• Environment an increasing concern for organizations globally

• Organizations have a direct impact on carbon and gas emissions

• Account for up to 30% of greenhouse emissions worldwide

• Have a responsibility to the environment

• Reduced sustainability can benefit organizational economics and financial stability

Page 5: Mcdaniel makingorganizationalchanges-climatechange

Why Implement Change?

• Save energy and reduce environmental and ecological footprint

• Increase economic capital• Create a sense of cohesion through like mindset• Future forward track for growth and change

Environmental Impacts

Reduced emissions and ecological footprint Decreased energy output through increased recycling and waste management measures and encouraging the growth of green suppliers

Social Impacts Heighten awareness of need for change. Increased economic power will allow us to give back to local communities through reduced costs and feesAid the global population by reducing environmental impact

Economic Alterations in methods for sustainability will encourage financial stabilityMore likely to secure funding from green business partners and programs that support these initiatives

How do we implement change?

• Organizations that set goals for energy reduction decreased their energy consumption by 64%

• Set short and long term goals• Heterarchical coalitions will increase involvement• Promoting a common goal• Use reframing methods to increase fitness and

sustainability

Assess the Organization and Identify Objectives

• A SWOT or strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis and strategy map

• Survey studies (both qualitative and quantitative)• Identify objectives• Set clear goals

Page 9: Mcdaniel makingorganizationalchanges-climatechange

Human Resource Frame

• Creating a network of colleagues and students who share a sustainability mindset

• Generate awareness• Vision and mission must be clear • Statement of Intent

Page 10: Mcdaniel makingorganizationalchanges-climatechange

Political Frame

• Build a strong power base by appealing to group leaders

• Engage coalitions• Invite group suggestions for change• Listen intently to all points of view• Distribute power heterarchically

Page 11: Mcdaniel makingorganizationalchanges-climatechange

Symbolic Frame

• Create support through initiatives and incentives• Help colleagues make connections• Inspire by showing evidence of success• Plan off site activities and events• Promote a common value mindset

Page 12: Mcdaniel makingorganizationalchanges-climatechange

Structural Frame

• Increase education and training• Purchase energy saving appliances• Reduce water consumption by using low flow and

other filters• Perform energy and carbon emissions surveys to

identify areas of weakness• Set up more recycling areas and stations

Page 13: Mcdaniel makingorganizationalchanges-climatechange

Making Changes

• Set clear and attainable short and long term goals• Use heterarchical coalitions• Engage faculty, staff and colleagues in a common

goal • Demonstrate how the organization can achieve the

aim of maximum profit with minimal environmental impact.
