Wrestling team winsNiagara tournament

lished itself as a legitimate con-tender for National Honors witha surprising win in the NiagaraCounty Community CollegeStudent Senate Wrestling Tour-nament last Saturday.

The Tribunes finished first, inthe seven team field, beatingWestchester Community Col-lege which is ranked first na-tionally in the initial pre-seasonNJCAA Poll.

Spearheading the win for the14th ranked Tribunes were So-phomore Captain and defendingchampion Len Barber, 161 lbs.,Freshman Paul Gibson, 193 lbs.,and Freshman Joe D'Acquisto atHeavyweight. The three wonchampionship honors in theirweight classes.

the team's victory. Nine othersalso finished as place winners intheir weight class.

Placing second were MarkCaternolo 145 lbs. and CharlieHill 180 lbs. Four third placefinishers were Mark Siverd 121lbs., Mike Serpe 129 lbs., JoeMorone 137 lbs. and DougWheeler 193 lbs. Taking fourthwere John Irvine 153 lbs., JimMooney 170 lbs. and DaveSchroth at Heavyweight.

According to Kostecke, "thevictory was a pure team effort.Not only did 12 of our 15wrestlers place in the top 4 intheir weight classes, demon-strating team balance, but alsoin two weight classes (193 lbs.and Heavyweight) we had two ofthe top four finishers." Al-though only the top finisher ineach weight class can scorepoints, the second man keptother teams from scoring.

Kostecke added, "They allwrestled with the team in mind,everyone was point conscious.Joe D'Acquisto pinned everyonebut the Delhi coach. He deckedthe four opponents be faced.

Cheli news director of WMCC,after he spent 42 grueling min-utes trapped in the studio withSam Scuzzurri the d.j. then onduty and Julie Snyder of Cab-bages & Kings and the newsspeaker for WMCC.

Julie first found out that thedoor was jammed after the newsat 9:50. Her first reaction was"Oh s-", she was supposed to bemaking up a gymnastic class.However, she missed her makeup and said while she was inthere, "This is one way to go ona diet," and "if they don't dosomething quick I will turn intoa pyromaniac and burn downthe door". Also, "Being lockedin here is making me crazy."

Sam Scazzarri the d.j. on theair then first found out at 10:00when the news staff tried to getout. His first reaction was, "Se-curity will be down in a fewminutes to unlock the door. Wehave been having problems withthe door since the middle ofOctober. The handle was hardto turn & the door was hard toclose." His only real worry washaving the sound come over theair. "It took a long time to getdown here because a girl inthere had a class to go to andthat should have been at a

' higher priority."Emergency services was

called in at 10:00. They were onthe scene at 10:13. 13 membersshowed up with the emergency

cart. Captain B. Bingham andsquad leaders R. Williams, J.Childs, & M. Fairley were amongthe 13 emergency services peo-ple who showed up.

They first tried to pull the lockassembly off. When that didn'twork they were considering us-ing a torch on the handle. How-ever, Cal Williams, the seniorlock smith, Ray Bower of main-tenance, and Paul J. Hergen •Roder of security also worked «on the door. They finally got the adoor open by prying the door |away from the jam. They then £popped the lock out. |

When the door was opened at 110:37 releasing a happy Julie °"Snyder and James Cheli, SamScazzarri just kept playing hismusic.
