SENIOR PROGRAMS

SENIOR MONTHLY DANCESMonthly dances where you can meet and dance with people from throughout the Valley. Dances are every third Wednesday of the month. Dances are held from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Fee: $1.50Location: Las Palmas CCDates : January 20th, February 17th, March 17th, April 21st & May 19th

SENIOR MONTHLY TRIPSJoin us on an outing to one of the many Rio Grande Valley at-tractions. Trips are scheduled once a month and limited space is available. Contact staff at any Community Centers for details.Fee: Varies, depending on tripTrip dates to be announced.

DAILY NUTRITION PROGRAMFree nutrition program for registered participants age 60 and over offered

Monday - Friday: 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at each Community Center. Small donation required.

The Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for adults age 50 and over on a daily basis at all three community centers. Programs are conducted by volunteers. Some fees are charged for class supplies. Contact each center for more information.

Enjoy a variety of introductory classes while your child enjoys a recreational activity at Las Palmas Community Center. Anyone and everyone is welcome! Each class is held twice a week. JUNIOR MASTER GARDENER The program helps to develop the future stewards of the land by igniting a passion for the outdoors through this unique gardening program. Participants will be involved in hand-on activities, guided trail walks and gardening projects.-AGE: Recommend 2nd to 5th gradeDATE: 3rd Saturday of the MonthTIME: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pmFEE: $5.00 per student (includes supplies)ATTENDANCE: Students may attend select classes throughout the year or attend all 12 and become a certifi ed Junior Master Gardener: Wildlife Gardener. YOUTH CLASS DESCRIPTIONSBallet - Become a young ballerina! In this class participants learn basic ballet steps and terms in a creative, fun environment.Basketball Skills and Drills - Learn the fundamentals of basketball. Dribbling, passing, shooting, and footwork will be taught in a fun setting. Beginner Folklorico - Interested in learning a cultural Mexican dance? In this class, you will learn the basic Folklorico footwork!Cheerleading - In this class, you will learn proper cheerleading techniques, including jumps, cheers and great dances. Drawing - Learn how to use pencils and draw different shapes and figures. In this class you will learn the basics of sketching and shading as well as painting. Come learn to make a masterpiece!Folklorico - In this class you will learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography.Hands on Art - Art is fun, especially when it is hands on. Learn to create a variety of mini art projects with different media.Kid Aerobics - It’s time to put away that remote control and put your tennis shoes on. Instructors will go through various fun activities and exercises to promote fitness in your daily life.Mat-cercise - Participants will learn basic tumbling skills from forward rolls, tiny toe touches and proper stretching techniques.Mini-Masterpieces - Work with a variety of materials from paint to beads and create your own art by hand.Modern Dance - This class will cover the footwork, coordination and rhythm that it takes to perform a wonderful routine. Music Mania - Great for beginners. Come and learn about music, instruments and more. Painting - Learn how to paint with different art media to create a masterpiece. Continue to learn and understand concepts of depth perspective and color.Pep Squad - Intro to cheer techniques, terms and dance. Performing Folklorico- This class is for the trained Folklorico dancer! Learn advanced choreography and routines to be performed at public events. Please go to Las Palmas Community Center to register with instructor approval.Spirit Angels - (Beginner/Intermediate) An introductory class to cheerleading techniques including jumps, cheers and great dances.Twinkle Toes - Twirl in tights and learn the basic steps of ballet.Urban Stepz - Faster than ballet and jazz with some great music and kicks.Youth Ceramics - Learn about ceramics and make a few projects to take home. Supplies provided for a total of 3 projects.

All classes are held two days a week unless otherwise noted. Class length varies by program. Class will begin the week of Febuary 1st and end the week of April 9th. Classes not meeting minimum enrollment (10 students) by the first class meeting are subject to cancellation. Fees are:

The 30th Annual Golden Age Olympics is an Olympic-style competition for participants age 50 & over. AQUATICSLearn-to-swim classes begin April 12th at Municipal Pool.Classes are Monday - Thursday.Fee: $20.00 resident/$30.00 non-resident Participants will receive an offi cial Gus & Goldie T-Shirt for each registered class.

PARENT/BABY WATER ORIENTATION (6 mo. - 2 yrs. 11 mo.): Introduces the infant or toddler to the pleasures of water. The parent is instructed in techniques for teaching their child fundamental water skills. At least one parent per child will be strictly enforced. All persons must wear swimming suits. Lined swim diapers are required for infants. NO DIAPERS OR DISPOSABLE SWIM DIAPERS!!!PRE-SCHOOL (3,4 & 5 yr. olds): This program will help children make the physical and mental adjustment of submerging their faces under water and holding their breath without discomfort. Once they pass this stage, they are taught to fl oat on their front and back and progress to learning arm strokes.YOUTH (6-14 yr. olds): A standard American Red Cross advancement program will be taught. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department athletic leagues play under the rules and regulations of the Amateur Softball Association and the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation. REFUNDS/TRANSFERS - We constantly strive to provide the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfi ed with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve, for nearly all of our programs, we will arrange one of the following: TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the third class meeting, at no charge. After the third class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the third class meeting and will carry a $5 fee per class. Requests for transfers, credits, and refunds must be in writing. A refund check will be mailed with 30 days following a written request.

RETURNED CHECK POLICY - A $25 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until fi nances are settled.

MEDICAL POLICY - The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notifi ed by a qualifi ed medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.
