Dr. Sudduth Rea Cummings Home telephone: 203-626-5330 Cell phone: 724-626-5330 Email: scummings206@comcast.net Course Description: Ascetical Theology (MC 506) is a foundational course in the Anglican Track that seeks to develop spiritual formation by studying the historical development and content of spiritual theology and leadership, focusing particularly on the resources of the Anglican tradition and it’s relationship with the broader Biblical, historical and ecumenical context. Goals of the Course Participants in this course will become more deeply familiar with the major figures and traditions of Christian spirituality; learn and practice a selection of spiritual disciplines; and continue their preparation to exercise a ministry of spiritual leadership through spiritual friendship, mentoring, direction and personal example. The primary goal of the course is to become acquainted with the breadth and riches of the Anglican spiritual tradition in order to use them personally and in ministry.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

1. Rule of Life: The instructor will provide a rule of life form for students to complete according to your current practice. A copy will be returned to the instructor before the first class session. A second one will be provided at the second class session to be completed and copied to the instructor, with a one to two page explanation of any changes made between the first and second versions. 2. Required reading texts and written reading reports: The following five books are required reading and a 3-5 page reading report will be written for each book, summarizing the substance of the book and the student’s perception of its application to ministry. One report will be submitted at each class session and the last one will be submitted at the end of the course.
