your child to a theme park to meet a princess, Princess Emporium in Fort Recovery will arrange for Cinderella, Snow White or Belle to come to your home. Although the idea of princess parties is not original, what makes these different is that Andria Wood actually transforms into the character. Playing the parts began as volunteer work for community fundraisers in high school. While a student at Cincinnati Christian University she worked at a daycare and as a nanny. That’s when she discovered the love of giving children a lasting memory

of the best day of their whole life. She recalls her first party, where the girls gasped, and in concealed whispers debated among themselves if it was the real Belle from Beauty and the Beast. They concluded that yes, it was! And things just got better from there. Andria has always been very dramatic and theatrical, so this is a natural fit for her. To facilitate making the princesses real, the look must be authentic. The costumes were each hand made by her mother Judy, to match the Disney character. During the sewing process they frequently checked pictures to make sure the outfits were as close as possible to those in the classic movies and

book illustrations. Parties range from one to two hours consisting of games, music, stories, gifts and a tea party with a real tea set. There is also the option of costumes (for both boys and girls), face painting and crowns/superhero mask decorating. Occasions can vary from birthday to the last day of school or any other reason for a celebration. Over the last months, Andria has stopped at several libraries in the area to introduce children to these storybook characters. On a recent visit, one adult commented that Cinderella looked like she had come straight from The Magic Kingdom.

of visiting Cele Kahle at her Coldwater home. The purpose was to observe her Christmas tree and learn a few tips on decorating. Many know Cele as the Merchandising Volunteer at the Hospitality Shop at the Mercer Health Hospital. She supplies the Hospitality Shop with floral arrangements for every season, along with funeral arrangements and wreaths. She helps with the buying of merchandise and displaying of those items.

She runs “Cele’s Florals and Décor”, a flourishing cottage industry, from her home by appointment. Her clientele include businesses and individuals for whom she provides personal decorating services. She helps accessorize with pictures, lamps, silk florals, trees, vases, etc. Basically, she adds the finishing

touches. Christmas time finds her decorating

Christmas trees using items her clients already own along with incorporating and coordinating her pieces with theirs. This allows customers to keep their treasured ornaments and the important handmade

keepsakes of their children. When decorating a tree she always starts at the top with an angel, star, bow, or whatever embellishment one chooses. She then puts on the special ornaments so that they are in the most visible part of the tree. Then she fills in with other ornaments, a lot of them may be of the same shape and color, and places them evenly around the tree. She likes to mix many different ornaments on a tree. Than, she will add the ribbon, berries, decorative stems, etc. Cele says, “Don’t be afraid to be creative.” She often cuts apart garlands and glitter sprays, flowers or ivy to add finishing touches to the tree. Lastly, she lays the tree skirt. She says visually interesting tree skirts are few and far between, so she encourages

customers to purchase 3 yards of a silk like fabric that matches with their tree décor and drape it under the tree.

The Art of Racing in the Rain is the story of Denny Swift; told from Enzo’s point of view. Enzo lives with Denny and likes to watch TV. He’s learned a lot from TV. The Law & Order series taught him about legal practices and court proceedings. Details regarding police meth-odology and terminology were gleaned from The Rockford Files and Columbo. But racing shows are his favorite; partly because Denny is a racecar driver. Enzo’s learned a lot about the world in general from auto racing. He knows that there is no dishonor in losing; the only dishonor lies in not racing because you are afraid to lose. Imagining he is in the passenger seat with Denny

driving reminds him of the time he was actually allowed to ride along in their BMW at Thun-derhill Raceway Park. The other guys thought he’d be scared, but Enzo just wanted to go faster and faster. He understood speed and how it could get into your blood. He understood Denny. Through good times and bad, they were a team; he and Denny. After Zoe and Eve came along, Enzo protected them when Den-ny couldn’t be there. And he sensed things that no one else knew. Maybe it was because he truly listened to what was said. After Eve was gone and “The Twins” tried to take Zoe away, Enzo stayed true. He knew Den-ny didn’t do the horrible things of which he was accused. They both remembered the rule of rac-ing: “no race has ever been won in the first corner; many have

been lost there.” In order to win the custody battle, Denny had to fight and not easily give in.

This novel makes many ref-erences to auto racing, its wis-dom and how those same adages can be applied to life in general. The book starts in the present, then goes back to tell the story of Enzo and Denny’s meeting, and their life since. I knew af-ter the first chapter that I would have tears in my eyes before the ending. When there, I found they were brought on not only

by sadness, but compassion too. Denny’s background was dif-ferent from Eve’s. Her parents couldn’t accept that he was good enough for their daughter and grandchild. Racing is a world sport, covering many continents and ways of life. Sometimes we don’t get to make the decisions. If a mistake or misjudgment has been made, the driver must ac-cept it. There’s no turning back at 185 miles per hour. The Art of Racing in the Rain is a novel within a story. The author in-tertwines family and personal relationships with hot laps and Formula One tracks to make this a book that appeals to many. Our copy is in large print and can be found under STE. And by the way….Enzo came from mixed lineage. His mother was a lab and his father a terrier. yes, Enzo is a dog.

An online Facebook store features tutus resembling those of the Disney princesses. And boys have not been forgotten as masks and wrist cuffs including Hulk, Captain America, Batman and several other super hero characters are available. Andria states her favorite part is when the children want to hold her hand and wrap their little arms around her big poofy skirts. For someone with an associate’s degree in biblical studies, this may seem like an unlikely path. yet when you think about it, what better way to share the goodness of life than to light up the face of a child? Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of earnings potential and a variety of investment options — so it’s a great tool for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used properly to get the best results. That’s why you should review your 401(k) at least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.

Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help from your plan provider. But if that assistance isn’t available, you might want to consult with a financial professional to make sure you’re getting the maximum benefit from your plan.

As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably be this:

“How much should I contribute?” At the very least, try to put in enough to receive your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. If you don’t earn this match, you are essentially walking away from “free money.” Beyond this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if you’re eligible, you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth potential, provided you’ve had your account for five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½.

Of course, it’s not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines its success — it’s also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars. (Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices, such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right investment mix, you’ll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:

• Your age — Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because you’ll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat more conservatively, but you’ll still need some growth potential in your 401(k) portfolio.

• Your goals — Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your 401(k).

• Your other retirement income sources — If you have a variety of retirement income sources — a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse with generous retirement benefits — you may need to invest differently, perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement income.

Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out of your plan? Here’s a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly, you’ll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate retirement goals.

As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many ways — so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)’s performance.

As you know, the holiday season can be joyous, hectic, celebratory — and expensive. And while you certainly enjoy hosting family gatherings and giving presents to your loved ones, you’ll find these things even more pleasurable if they don’t add a lot more weight to your debt load. And that’s why you’ll want to follow some smart money-management techniques over the next few weeks.

To begin with, try to establish realistic budgets for both your entertaining and your gift giving. When you host family and friends, don’t go overboard on your expenditures. Your guests will still appreciate your efforts, which, with a little creativity, can create a welcoming and fun experience for everyone. As a guiding principal, keep in mind these words attributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the famous German poet and philosopher: “What you can do without, do without.” Set a budget and stick to it.

And the same rule applies to your gifting. You don’t need to find the most expensive presents, or overwhelm recipients with the sheer volume of your gifts. This is especially true if you, like so many people, have been affected by the tough economy. Everyone you know will understand that gifts don’t have to be lavish to be meaningful.

Furthermore, by sticking to a budget, you won’t be tempted to dip into your long-term investments to pay for fabulous parties or mountains of gifts. It’s never a good idea to tap long-term investments for short-term needs, but can be especially bad when your investment prices are down, as they may well be this year.

So, if you want to stick to a budget but you don’t want to raid your investments, how can you pay for your holiday season expenses? If you can spread out your purchases, you may be able to pay for them from your normal cash flow. But if that’s not possible, you might want to consider “plastic” — your credit card. Using your credit card does not, by itself, need to amount to a financial setback, especially if you’ve chosen a card that offers favorable terms and you’ve already shown the discipline not to over-use that card. Just try to minimize your credit card usage over the holidays and pay off your card as soon as you can.

Of course, you can make your holiday season much easier, financially speaking, if you’ve set up a holiday fund to cover your various expenses. While it’s too late to set up such a fund this year, why not get an early start on the 2012 holiday season? All you need to do is put away some money each month into an easily accessible account, separate from your everyday accounts. You don’t have to put in a great deal, but you do need to be consistent, which is why you may want to have the money moved automatically, once a month, from your checking or savings account to your holiday fund. When next year’s holiday season rolls around, you might be pleasantly surprised by how much you’ve accumulated.

According to the advanced weather reports the weather doesn’t sound too bad for early December. Temps in the mid 30’s to 40’s is pretty good for this time of year. Let’s just hope that is fore runner of the oncoming winter. But you never know in Ohio this time of year. An easy winter would be appreciated by everyone, I think.

I assume everybody has their Christmas shopping all finished and wrapped. Well, maybe not everybody. I have my shopping done now and just have to wrap them. Sure makes it easy when you only have to buy for one. I get lots

of help from my daughters when it comes to buying for that grandson of mine. Sure does help me as I am not to sharp when it comes to kids toys. God knows there are plenty to select from especially electronics.

Remember to get those packages for the service men and women ready plenty early to avoid late deliveries overseas. The postal system is especially busy this time of the year. Having been in the Army I can remember how it felt to not get packages from home. They can be a great moral booster to the person so far from home. And they sure are better eating than what the Army had to offer.Merry Christmas Everybody....

Celina Couple Receives Albert HecklerAward from Cheryl Ann Programs

Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that they’d be-come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.

They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celinahome. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were atypical family.

Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. Withthat bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs’ lives changed forever.

The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,but the Hoyngs couldn’t afford to spend much time thinkingabout their terrible luck. They had a son who needed themmore than he ever had. The first years after Brian’s accident,which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,they said, as they searched for someone who could help themhelp Brian.

Their school district helped as much as it could.Finally, then-Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngsknew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.“Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,”Louie Hoyng said. “It gave Brian his life back.”

The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everydaylife. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made newfriends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.

“When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he wouldjust smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knewhow to make him laugh,” Dorothy Hoyng said.

It wasn’t long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.

Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the uniqueequipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said SuperintendentMike Overman, “Louie would forget to send us a bill.” Healso served a term on the county MRDD board and was theboard president.

For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf oftheir son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at

the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is giveneach year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service andadvocacy.

“The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rateadvocates for their son,” Overman said. “They rarely evermissed a day spending time with him, and they always spokeup to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-gram.”

Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In theyears after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot aboutpatience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced theHoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outside—but itwas a world where they found welcome and acceptance.

“We met some wonderful people during our years at CherylAnn,” Dorothy Hoyng said. “They worked their hearts outhelping us with Brian.”

Stateline Writers MeetAt the April meeting of the Stateline Writer’s Club, members read

profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-believe, and member Eileen Whitsett’s special activity of having mem-bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or peopleassigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.

Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbacher’s proposal for a specialmeeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June fora reading of their best work.

At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-bers will rehearse for their special program in June.

Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested incoming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited toattend.

Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated

As the gates opened for the firsttime on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced inarea. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs haveover 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest andbiggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is alsoworking on getting a State Dog Park in her home town ofSt. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteersworked many hours with the help of the State and CraigMorton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of WestBank Road

Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of theCelina Rotary Club’s major donation and businesses as wellas individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of thepeople who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, PastRotary President and Celina City Council Member spokeas his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out thepark. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor ofthe recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for severaldays. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park GandLake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of theDivision of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wiselessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few ofwhich were: Never leave home without your leach andyour ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will getwhat you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not areal kiss.

One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,

professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs athome but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-mented that this was the first time his dog had this muchexercise since he got him a year ago.

There are a few small problems to work out with thepark, such as the water faucet would not shut off and therewas a small hole under the fence in the small dog side ofthe park, which of course was found by one of the littlefurry visitors on dedication day. These problems will beeasily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends arebeing sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use ofthe park is free to the public. One of the additions theywould like to have is benches added to the park for thecomfort of the owners.

The green stations placed around the fence for the dogwastes were given at a discount by Florida based companynamed DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to helpby giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Garyflew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting andopening of the park. If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that areposted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide suchas:

Dogs should have their current shots The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep

dogs in their own spaces. Don’t leave dog unattended Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior Keep small children under close supervision Clean up after your own dog Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.These are just a few precautions to remember. Check

the rules before entering the park and you and your dogwill have a great time The Park is open daylight to darkeveryday.

What would Theodore Homan, Roger Homan’s Great Grandfather, have said in 1888, if he saw his family celebrating Christmas in the haymow of his big old barn!

When Theodore Homan purchased this farm in 1888, he must have loved the big old farm barn built in 1873. Over a Century later, in 1990, I was talking with Dennis Homan about his family barn, for my book, “Those Magnificent Big Barns in Mercer County.” Dennis said his father John R. Homan had acquired the farm, including this barn, from his father Theodore Homan.

This month, I talked with Roger Homan, son of Dennis Homan. Roger told me that his brother Kevin followed Dennis Homan as owner, and used the barn for 300 head of cattle on the farm. In 2009 Roger purchased the barn from Kevin. Roger proceeded to knock down the silos to install a driveway for his equipment business. Roger’s next project was to fix the barn for a warehouse. He had Amish carpenters come to put siding on the barn, but that plan changed. The Carpenters told him that his barn was not level. Plus, the threshing floor and the stable were at different levels and the last 16 feet which was added later, was another level. Therefore, the Carpenters also knocked out all of the concrete and added a new concrete floor across the lower level of the barn to make the entire bottom floor one level.

Roger happened to read Calvin Trillin’s article, “For the Love of a Barn,” www.ArchitecturalDigest.com, and was inspired to restore his own barn. next, the Amish Carpenters asked about the haymow, where the floor boards were loose. The decision was made to take out the boards, and use the hand hewn beams as a base. They added a subfloor, whereby they took two-by-fours and placed them on a vertical edge, and added a beautiful hardwood floor on top. (Honestly, now the floor looks like a dining room floor in a new home.) At the center of the haymow, the beams were structured at another level. Roger asked the Carpenters to remove the beams and he had a staircase and an elevator installed. They crafted the railing at the top of the stairs by using the old haymow

boards.The second floor was so nice that

Roger no longer wanted to use it as a warehouse. He decided to ask his family to have Christmas dinner in the barn. His mom Louise Homan offered to bring her Wheat pattern dinnerware which she had always used for Christmas dinners at home. As a hobby, Roger has collected over 700 pieces of this Wheat Harvest pattern dinnerware! The only two pieces of this dinnerware which he is missing are the deviled eggs plate and the coffee server! Roger found some light fixtures with a wheat pattern, and that set the beginning of naming this barn, “The Harvest Barn.”

When Roger and Deb’s daughter graduated from college, they went to an auction and purchased furniture for her apartment. When her fiancé and she bought a house, the apartment furniture found its way to the Harvest Barn. After several auctions, more antique dining room sets are gracing this former haymow turned dining room. They looked to complete a kitchen, with stainless steel kitchen equipment from the old Schoolhouse in Berne, Indiana. Friends supplied cabinets from a closed coffee shop in Montpelier, Indiana. Roger smiled as he told about attending Father Jim Trick’s auction where he purchased the old hand crafted confessional from the former Holy Redeemer Church of new Bremen. (That is a conversational piece and no longer

used for its original purpose!)After Roger and Deb’s friends

and relatives came to dinner at the Harvest Barn, pretty soon they began using this barn for reunions, birthdays, anniversaries, rehearsal and engagement celebrations, as well as Holidays like Halloween and Christmas. The nicest party was for his Dad, Dennis Homan’s 60th High School Class Reunion. Dennis did not have to pitch hay bales in the haymow in the big old barn that evening; he and his former classmates were served dinner, like the old wedding style dinners in past times. And the barn has come full circle, from being a farm harvest barn for over a Century, to becoming a family Harvest Barn in this century. Roger and Deb, thank you for preserving this barn for our local history.

ORAnGE CREAM PIE 1 C. sugar3 Tablespoon cornstarch2 eggsJuice of 2 oranges with the grated

rind.Enough water added to the juice

to make 2 cups of liquid. Mix the dry ingredients add

half the juice. Add the eggs to the rest of the jucie and water mixture Blend well and cook while stirring constantly for about 1 minute after it comes to a boil. Cool for at least 10 minutes before placing in baked crust. Add meringue to top.

Meringue:Beat 2 egg whites and add 1

tablespoon powered sugar and one-eighth teaspoon cream of tartar. Brown in oven.

musical, “Fiddler on the Roof,” Tevye, a beleaguered milkman and father of five daughters, sings the classic “Sunrise, Sunset – Swiftly Fly the years.” I can relate more and more to this song and find it remarkable that a generation has flown by since Joel Broering, a very special young man and a student golfer, passed to cancer. I have also seen during that time another young man, Rob Hemmelgarn, grow as a writer and a gifted observer of people. Rob wrote the following about his friend Joel:

The following account isn’t about state championships, All-Ohio accolades, or lucrative college careers. It is about a sometimes larger-than-life kid whose example personified life it isn’t always about the destination, but more about the journey…

As I lazily stomped from the saturated turf at Lima Shawnee High School on that dreary and blustery november Friday night in 1993, the scoreboard that just went

dark was another painful reminder that I had played in my last high school football game. For a senior in high school, that feeling was an internal Armageddon. While my final muddy steps across the all-weather track grew heavier, I noticed my classmate, Joel Broering, standing awkwardly in the aisle yelling in our direction as we exited the field. Through the years, Joel’s voice was always booming, and this particular time it was difficult to ignore. While I was overly-busy pitying myself after the loss, Joel stood there alone on a pair of crutches, unbeknownst to any of us that he was only a few weeks away from his own funeral.

Growing up, Joel’s head housed one of the keenest sports-minds I had ever known in all of my ten or eleven years of childhood and he wasn’t afraid to let you know. Without the convenience of up-to-minute tweets and text messages, Joel had a knack for reciting the latest scores, injury reports, and roster moves of seemingly every team from Major League Baseball

to the USFL, and his bedroom was decked in memorabilia that made even the most humble kids ooze with envy.

Anytime there was a pickup game to be played – whether it was baseball behind Greg Balster’s house on Walnut Street, basketball on the driveway in front of my parent’s garage, or wall-to-wall football in Doug Speck’s living room, there was little doubt that Joel would make an appearance. While most of the time he was welcome, it all depended on whether he was in the mood to argue when things didn’t go in his favor. The funny thing about Joel was how he would rather run through a lion’s cage in a meat suit than lose a game, which was interesting because as smart as he was when it came to sports, he wasn’t all that talented of an athlete. His participation worked out pretty well for me because at 5-5 and 112.75 pounds, he was one of the few kids other than the girls at that age that I had a chance at beating.

Once high school seemingly slammed into us from out of the blue, Joel’s attention faded from football and baseball, and leaned more toward golf and girls. This concept is another fascinating

tidbit because while he absolutely excelled at golf, his game toward the girls was in the same relative ballpark as the ones we played in Greg Balster’s backyard, my driveway, or Doug Speck’s living room. One afternoon in 1991, I popped into the downstairs restroom at St. Henry High School and Joel was slouched on the floor in tears. Abiding by the certain code forbidding boys our age asking other boys the same age what was wrong, I headed back to class. A few days later the news broke - Joel had been diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Suddenly, rather than sports, cars, girls, and school dances, Joel’s spare time was filled with coming to grips with chemotherapy, hair loss, countless medicines, and weight fluctuation – experiences no teenager should ever have to burden. Following a nearly-immediate remission, the reigning MVP on St. Henry’s golf team relapsed about a year later. Joel submitted to a bone marrow transplant in early 1993, and for a few months the cancer went back into remission. For a moment, Joel evolved back into the kid we all knew – an energetic ball of, well – Joel.

His progress didn’t last long enough. That summer, Joel was granted a wish by the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and he elected to hang out with his favorite professional golfer - Payne Stewart. For the 1993 Skins Game in Palm Desert, there sat Joel on national television resembling a miniature Stewart as he was decked out in knickers and a tam-style headpiece. After winning the third Skins game in three tries, Stewart presented the trophy to Joel. He returned home and in early December a group of us visited Joel, who was bed-ridden to his living room. To lay there and joke with his friends, only to witness us leave and return to our ‘normal’ teenage lives, had to be excruciating for him and his family, but not once did Joel seem to feel sorry for himself. As we left, I had an unsettling feeling that it was going to be the last time we spoke with our buddy. Unfortunately I was right.

Eighteen years ago this week, we all paid our final respects to our classmate. Joel would be 36 years old in a couple of months. It’s difficult to predict whether he would be married, have kids, or still live in the area, but I think we are all pretty certain that he would be making a living either as a sports writer, broadcaster, coach, or maybe even a defense attorney. There weren’t many people who didn’t know Joel. Whether you engaged in nonstop debates with him or just rolled your eyes when he demanded he was right, the undeniable truth is that on December 11, 1993, St. Henry and the Class of 1994 in particular, lost a good kid at much too young of an age. A generation later, as real life has morphed us from careless high schoolers to warriors fighting a daily barrage of mortgages, deadlines, disciplining kids, and every other curveball imaginable, it is hard not to drift back to the words my cancer-ridden friend hollered from the bleachers that night in Lima as we limped from the field – “Get your heads up guys, life is too short to get this upset!”

Conference play begins in both the Midwest Athletic Conference and Western Buckeye League this week as county schools start the quest towards a league championship.

In the MAC, Coldwater will host Delphos St. John’s in the league opener while Marion Local visits Minster on Thursday as well.

Fort Recovery is also home in league play as the lady Indians welcome in new Bremen on Thursday. Parkway and St. Henry

each open on the road with the lady Panthers visiting Versailles while the lady Redskins travel to new Knoxville.

Celina starts its Western Buckeye League schedule with a road trip to Lima Bath on Thursday.

In non-league action on Saturday, St. Henry hosts Lima Central Catholic while Parkway travels to Ansonia.

Marion Local hosts Sidney Lehman in a non-league battle on Tuesday as well.

In boys action, Celina welcomes in Columbus Linden-McKinley for a non-league battle on Friday with Fort Recovery traveling to Delphos to battle Jefferson.

Parkway hosts Lima Temple Christian on Friday as well with Marion Local hosting Ottoville.

Coldwater opens its season on Saturday as the Cavaliers travel to Van Wert with St. Henry hosting Fort Loramie and Fort Recovery traveling to Ansonia.

Girls open up MAC, WBL action

Coldwater’s boys and girls bowling teams participated in the Ohio High School Invitational Kickoff Tournament at Columbus Square Bowling Palace over the weekend with the girls taking second and the boys finishing fifth.

The lady Cavaliers posted victories over Bryan, Hubbard and St. Marys before falling to Westerville Central in the championship. Coldwater’s Jenna Wenning made the all-tournament team with a 558 on the day.

Coldwater’s boys squad defeated St. Marys in the opening round before falling to Wapakoneta in the second round. Charles Fella (689), Zach Huff (674) and Mitch Kanney (658) all made the all-tournament team on the boys side.

In West Ohio High School Bowling Conference girls action at Pla-Mor Lanes, Parkway defeated Ansonia 2083-1937 while St. Henry got past Lima Central Catholic 2013-1946. Coldwater also slipped past Wapakoneta 2640-2422 and Marion Local cruised past new Bremen 1914-1550.

Coldwater’s Jenna Wenning led area bowlers with a 212 with teammate Emily Bruns rolling a 184. Other top scorers included the Cavaliers’ Erika Hartings (178) and Kelsey Koester (178), Parkway’s Brooke Bonznango (172) and Coldwater’s Emily May (167).

On the boys side, the Cavaliers rolled past Fort Recovery 2847-1891 and Marion Local nipped Parkway 2505-2367. St. Henry also was victorious with a 2410-2132 win over Ansonia.

Parkway’s Cody Pierstorff led county bowlers with a 234 and Marion Local’s Cody Brodbeck shot a 208. Mitch Kanney (Coldwater, 205), Alex Seitz (Coldwater, 202), Parkway’s Josh Stein (198), Marion Local’s Dylan Platfoot (196) and Marion Local’s Zak Kemper (192) rounded out the top area bowlers.

In boys junior varsity action, Marion Local fell to new Bremen 2085-1806 and St. Henry defeated Versailles 2414-2348. Wapakoneta also got past Parkway 2495-2120.while Coldwater slipped past St. Marys 2357-2070.

Coldwater’s girls junior varsity team recorded a 1914-1878 win over St. Marys. Marion Local and Parkway each lost as the Flyers fell to Versailles (1939-1493) and the Panthers came up short against Minster (1667-1411).

The Coldwater Orange junior high team rolled past Van Wert 2405-1953 while the Cavalier black squad defeated St. Marys yellow 1867-1557. St. Henry got past Parkway Black 1830-1232 and Celina defeated Parkway Gold 1740-1726. Marion Local came up short against Versailles (1897-1360).

Cavs take second at Kick-Off Classic

Lady Cavs beat a good Versailles team on Saturday 2660 to 2484 to stay in a tie with St. Marys on top of the conference standings. They were led by Emily Bruns (senior) 246, Alison Griesdorn (senior) 225 and Erika Hartings (sophomore) 216-208.

The boys team beat Marion Local 2723 to 2518. They remain at 4-0 and tied for the conference lead with Wapak, Versailles and Ottawa-Glandorf. They were led by Mitch Kanney (junior) 236, Alex Seitz (senior) 224 and Dan Hogenkamp (junior) 213.

Coldwater bowlers will be hosting their only HOME match of the year this Saturday at Pla-

Mor Lanes. Girls will take on Marion Local and they will get underway at 10:00 am

Boys will take on Van Wert and they will start at 1:00 pm. Get there early and get a good seat! Bleachers will be set up.

If you have never seen a HS bowling match, this is a great opportunity to check out the very talented Coldwater boys and girls teams!

Cav bowlers stay unbeaten!

Three Mercer County teams remain among the four schools that are unbeaten in conference play with all three hoping to stay in the tie for first.

The feature game of the week takes place in Maria Stein as Marion Local (2-0, 1-0) hosts new Knoxville (3-1, 2-0).

Coldwater (2-1, 1-0) is at new Bremen (1-3, 0-1) in MAC action while Fort Recovery (4-0, 1-0) visits Parkway (0-4, 0-1).

Other games in league action include Minster (1-1, 0-1) at Delphos St. John’s (3-2, 0-1) and Versailles (4-2, 1-1) at St. Henry (1-2, 0-1).

In non league play on Saturday, new Bremen hosts Delphos Jefferson with Minster welcoming in Fort Loramie.

The rest of the schedule involving MAC teams includes Fort Recovery at Jay County (In), Sidney Lehman at St. Henry and Van Wert at Coldwater.

Monday night, the lady Indians welcome in Franklin Monroe with Delphos St. John’s hosting Lima Shawnee. Tuesday games include Celina at St. Henry and Coldwater at Elida.

Boys teams in the MAC open league play on Friday with three of the five local schools hitting the road.

Coldwater hosts new Bremen and Fort Recovery welcomes in Parkway in MAC play. Marion Local makes the

trip to new Knoxville while St. Henry travels to Versailles in a key league affair. Delphos St. John’s takes the road trip to Minster in the other conference contest.

Saturday night, new Bremen hosts Anna with Marion Local welcoming in Mercer County rival Celina. Coldwater visits St. Marys and Wapakoneta visits St. Henry as well in a pair of WBL-MAC contests. Parkway is also in action as the Panthers visit Crestview.

On Tuesday, the Panthers visit South Adams (In) and Fort Recovery hosts Waynesfield Goshen.

WAPAKOnETA – Two Mercer County schools remained tied for first in the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference standings after victories this past weekend.

The Redskins and Cavaliers are each 4-0 on the season and tied with St. Marys atop the league standings. Versailles and Wapakoneta both stand at 3-1 with Parkway, Van Wert and Mississinawa Valley each posting 2-2 records. Marion Local is tied for ninth at 1-3.

This past weekend, Coldwater defeated Versailles 2660-2484 in action at Astro Lanes in Wapakoneta. Parkway fell to St. Marys 2540-2155 while Marion Local dropped a

2033-1877 decision to Minster.Emily Bruns and Alison

Griesdorn led county bowlers with a 246 and 225, respectively. Sydney Cook paced Parkway with a 191.

On the boys side, Coldwater is in a four way tie for first with Wapakoneta, Versailles and Ottawa Glandorf at 4-0 with St. Henry and St. Marys each standing at 3-1. Parkway is tied for seventh at 2-2 with Marion Local in a four way tie for tenth at 1-3. Fort Recovery also stands at 0-4 on the season.

Coldwater defeated Marion Local 2723-2518 and St. Henry beat Celina 2812-2643 in action on Saturday. Also, Parkway fell to new Bremen 2551-2282 and Fort Recovery lost to Versailles 2686-2045.

The Cavalier junior varsity boys are also 4-0 on the season with St. Henry 2-2 while Parkway and Marion Local are each 1-3.

St. Henry posted a 2292-1445 win over Van Wert while Parkway got past new Bremen 2253-1868. Coldwater also recorded a victory over Minster by a 2277-1919 margin but Marion Local came up short to St. Marys 1945-1896.

In junior varsity girls action, Coldwater beat Parkway 1923-1559 and Marion Local got past Minster 1648-1549.

The lady Cavaliers remain atop the league at 4-0 while Marion Local is 1-3 and Parkway falls to 0-4.

WRESTLInGHost Coldwater took fifth place

in the Sielski Memorial Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.

Carey won the tournament with a 5-0 record followed by Edgerton (4-1), Dixie (4-1), St. Marys (3-2), Coldwater (3-2), Spencerville (2-3), Urbana (2-3), Tinora (1-4), Lincolnview (1-4) and Elida (0-5).

The Cavaliers opened the day with a 63-12 win over Lincolnview before falling to St. Marys 33-27. After the orange and black dropped a 47-27 decision to Carey, the Cavaliers finished the day with wins over Urbana (50-15) and Spencerville (63-15).

The December 8, 2011 meeting of the Galaxy Leaders 4-H club was called to order by President Cody Freeman. Sixteen members answered roll call by naming something they want for Christmas. Five advisors and two guests were also present.

Hannah Fox led the Pledge of Allegiance and Lauren Wenning led the 4-H Pledge.

The secretary and treasurers reports were read and approved. Sarah Brunswick made the motion and Hannah Fox seconded it. Motion passed.

Under old business, Cody Freeman was congratulated for being chosen to be a CIT (counselor in training) for 4-H camp.

Under new business, we had election of officers. They are as follows: President -Brianna Wenning, Vice President - Cody Freeman, Secretary – Lauren Wenning, Treasurer – Amber Freeman, Reporter – Carol Westgerdes, Recreation Leaders – Madison & Hannah Fox and Sarah Brunswick. They will be installed at the January meeting. Hope Mann received a candy bar for having a December birthday. A handout sheet was sent home for the January meeting. This will be Mothers night and we will be choosing fair projects and filling out paper work. Up coming dates of importance are December 13th – Jr. Fairboard meeting, December 15th

– Food, Fashion & Design meeting, and December 27th and 28th camp counselor retreat. A thank you card was sent to Dominoes for sponsoring the pizza party.

Amber Freeman did a safety report on Christmas light safety, a health report on staying healthy during the Holidays, and a demonstration on a magic trick. Samantha Fritz did a safety report on Christmas tree safety, a health report on eating good food choices as snacks, and a demonstration on how to make a paper Christmas ornament.

The meeting was adjourned by Madison Fox and seconded by Meg Birkmeyer. Avery Kremer and Brenda Powell served refreshments along with the club pizza party sponsored by Dominoes Pizza. Following the meeting we enjoyed our club Christmas party and gift exchange. The Cloverbud activity was making candy cane reindeers, and everyone made a Hershey kiss mouse ornament.

The next meeting will be on January 12, 2012 at 7PM at the Coldwater Library meeting room. This will be Mothers night. Reports will be given by Lauren Wenning and Cody Freeman. Annual Awards Ceremony Set for January 28, 2012 – To Include Sunoco American Late Model Se-ries

ROSSBURG, OH (December

12) – Saturday night, January 28, 2012 will bring an official close to the 2011 Eldora Speedway racing season, with the annual Awards Ceremony in the Eldora Ball-room. And, has become tradition, the Sunoco American Late Model Series (ALMS) will use the affair to crown their champion, as well.

Stepping to the stage as Eldora divisional champions will be Rob Trent in the Stock Cars and Jerry Bowersock in the Modifieds while Jon Henry and Brian Ruhlman will share the Late Model title. Henry will return to the stage a second time as the ALMS champion.

Trophies and point fund money will be distributed to the balance of the top 15 drivers in each of the three Eldora divisions, while the top 20 within the ALMS rankings will be recognized.

Throughout the evening, nu-merous specialty awards will be announced including rookie of the year, most improved driver, hard luck driver and best appearing car.

The doors to the Ballroom will swing open at 5:00, with the din-ner service at 6:30, followed by the awards presentation.

Tickets are priced at $23 per person and may be purchased by forwarding payment to the Eldora Speedway office at 13929 State Route 118 in new Weston, OH 45348. All tickets must be pur-chased in advance

The Santa house on the Mercer County Courthouse steps in Celina is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm. On Saturdays, Santa will be in his house from 12n to 2pm. Thursday, December 22nd will be the last day the Santa Claus house will be open this year.

Last year over 750 children visited Santa in his house at the Courthouse. Thanks to these sponsors for their generous donations to the yearly expenses of the Santa house in Celina. Santa House Thank You!

Two employees of Mercer Health Home Care received special honors at the West Central Ohio Home Health Organization Home Care Aide Recognition Day Dinner held recently in Lima, Ohio.

Receiving the honors were Mary Kay Fries and Debbie Garman. Out of the ten agencies who participate in the organization, Mercer Health Home Care was honored to have two employees who were in the final selection. There were only six finalists chosen.

Renee Kinney, Rn, Director of Mercer Health Home Care, says, “We were excited about these two employees being named finalists. Mary Kay has been helping home care patients for over 16 years and Debbie has been providing her skills to Mercer Health Home Care for over 8 years.”

Fries was nominate for being a “very caring person that always puts other individual’s needs over her own.” Kinney says, “She is a team player that works well with others to help provide the best care to all her clients. She has wonderful communication skills with the nurses, those she serves, and family member of those she serves.”

Garman was noted as being “very caring and compassionate.” Kinney states, “Debbie is very helpful and supportive to those she serves and their families. She is also very dependable and is always willing to give that extra effort to help her co-workers.”

Mercer Health Home Care has been a part of the community since it began as Mercer County Home nursing Care in 1966. 2011 is their 45th year of treating patients in their homes.

Parkway held the fifth grade D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduation, Friday, December 2, at the school’s auditorium. Special guests were, Mercer County Commissioner Bob nuding, Miss Ohio, Ellen Bryan, Mercer County D.A.R.E. Boosters, Tom Pryer, Shirley Pryer, nancy Heppeard, from the Ohio State Patrol, Dispatcher Ed Weirrick and Theresa Berry from the Mercer County Sheriff Office. The students reading their winning essays at the ceremony were: Jack Wehe, Andy Metz, Faith Rollins and Mason Baxter. Honor students receiving special recognition were: Molly Baltzell, Alyssa Miller, Jack Wehe, Allie Ford, Harley Burden, Duncan Morton, Stephanie Schaaf, Melissa Hauter and Faith Rollins. All of the fifth graders were presented with a certificate and a D.A.R.E. tee shirt, which were earned by completing their workbook, writing an essay and classroom activities. The key note speaker was Miss Ohio Ellen Bryan. Miss Ohio told of her experiences

as a D.A.R.E. graduate and staying focus on her dreams, which helped her say no to bad choices.

The Parkway teachers assisting Deputy Sue Miller with the program were, Mrs. Shellabarger, Mrs. Frahm, Mrs. Kirby and Mrs. Kraner. Parkway’s Middle School Principal is Mr. Baumgartner. The Mercer County D.A.R.E. program is a division of the Mercer County Sheriff Office under the leadership of Sheriff Jeff Grey. D.A.R.E. Officers are Deputy Mark Germann and Deputy Sue Miller.

Students placein competition

A component of the recently established agriculture pro-gram at Wright State Lake Campus included a course on dairycattle evaluation. Participating students learned about dairycattle physiology, pedigree, linear evaluation, and oral defenseof reasons. Students in the class competed in the nationalAssociation of College Teachers of Agriculture (nACTA)Dairy Judging Contest held in Wooster, Ohio on April 17th.

Members of the Wright State Lake Campus teams did wellin the Associates and Bachelors Degree Divisions of competi-tion. In the Associates Degree Division awards were givenfor top placings in the respective breeds judged that day (Hol-stein, Ayrshire, and Jersey) as well as overall individual andteam awards. Second Place in Ayrshire (Associate Division)was Damon Bertke and Third Place (Associate Division) wasBrian Schulte. Overall awards indicated the team placed well.Damon Bertke was the Second Place Individual and the Asso-ciates Degree team was 2nd Place in their Division.

The Bachelors Degree Team won their division in compe-tition. Garrett Dorsten placed 2nd overall as an individual,with Kevin Kaup placing third. The Bachelors Degree teamwas 2nd in each of the breed divisions (Holstein, Jersey, andAyrshire), as well as placing 2nd as a team in Oral Reasons. Anumber of the Bachelors Degree Team Members placed indi-vidually in breed competition with Garrett Dorsten placingSecond in the Jersey Breed, while Kevin Kaup was Third inHolsteins and First in Ayrshire.

Burtch Seed has made many donations for the events and activities Parkway FFA participates in through-out the year. They also have partnered with the Parkway FFA to hold the Burtch Seed Customer Appreciation Daywhich helps promote the Parkway FFA Chapter and Parkway Local Schools.

Three members of the Ft. Recovery FFA Chapter were recognized for their hard work and effort in receiving the American FFA Degree Award, while attending the 84th national FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. The three individuals receiving this award were Kelsey Brockman, Cody Kaiser, and Matt Whitacre. These three make only sixty-nine students awarded this degree in the history of the Ft. Recovery FFA Chapter.

The American FFA Degree is the

final step, in a four stepping-stone order of achievement within the FFA. In order to receive this award, they were first required to receive their Greenhand, Chapter, and State FFA Degrees, the other three steps for each member in this process. They were also required to document that they increased their net worth by at least 7,500 dollars, worked the equivalent of 2,250 hours on all of their projects, and be heavily involved in school, community, and FFA Chapter activities.

The American Degree Ceremony was held at 7:45AM in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and was watched by over 22,000 FFA members, their parents, and FFA advisors. The American FFA Degree is a very prestigious award with only five out of every one thousand members nationwide receiving the award.

Kelsey Brockman is the daughter of Gary and Janet Brockman. Kelsey’s accomplishments for receiving this award were recording hours and earnings at Muhlenkamp Dairy. Cody Kaiser is

the son of Tim and Julie Kaiser. Cody’s accomplishments for receiving this award were recording hours and earnings at Jutte’s Landscaping. Matt Whitacre is the son of Mike and Brenda Whitacre. Matt’s accomplishments for receiving this award were recording hours and earnings at Whitacre Farms and Jutte’s Landscaping.

The Ft. Recovery FFA would like to congratulate the American FFA Degree recipients for all their hard work and dedication.
