I have great pleasure in writing my first Commodore’s Report for a Club I have been a proud Member of for nearly 25 years. It is also an honour to be the second woman Commodore of MBTBC.

The recent passing of Past Commodore Alan Pay and also Club Patron and Past Commodore Neale Poultney is a sad loss to not only their families, but also to our Club. We acknowledge both these respected members who contributed their time and efforts to help make the Club what it is today.

On 17 September 2013 an Extraordinary Special General Meeting was called to inform members of the new financial restructuring of MBTBC. Together with the Commodore, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary - The Chairman of the MBTBC Marina Ltd George Davie outlined the proposal and the Marina Company’s involvement which had the endorsement and was recommended to all Members by this Committee. Both the existing structure and the structure under the new proposal were outlined and Members were encouraged to ask questions to ensure they clearly understood the contents of this proposal. It was an overwhelming outcome to this meeting and we express our gratitude to the Marina Company, and Members acknowledging to pledge their assistance.

A very special mention to our staff member Kristy Hollis who nominated to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation and upon doing so raised an outstanding amount of $9,099. Kristy, along with her fellow staff Members who supported her, is to be recognised for her outstanding efforts. (Full story, page 6).

Some forthcoming functions at the Club to look forward to include: Kid’s Christmas Party, Christmas Day lunch at MBTBC and the biggest night of all, New Year’s Eve. Please book well in advance for these functions as they are always sell out events. (Details from page 8). May I take this opportunity of wishing all fellow Members a very Merry Christmas enjoying this special time with your family and a happy, safe and prosperous New Year.

Regards,

Ann Sheriff, Commodore

Seafood and Jazz by the Bay really hit the trifecta for me in August, perfect weather, great music and delicious food. Usually when I come down to the Club I’m trapped in a meeting wishing I could escape and enjoy the beautiful facilities to the fullest and on August 18th I got my wish.

The lovely and generous Sam very kindly saved me some tickets to the sold out event so I could bring some friends and family down to our first Seafood and Jazz. And what a hero she is because when MBTBC pushes the boat out (pardon the pun) it is a treat to be involved. Not only did we score a great spot in the shade by the stage but the bar stocked pear cider (beverage of the gods). After a couple of relaxing sips “Nuages” began the afternoon’s entertainment.

“Perfect” really sums up the combination of smooth and soulful tunes. Lots of old favourites sung and played beautifully. My daughter Lily and her new friend Charlotte enjoyed the music so much they wanted to storm the stage. Even Jacob, my 14 month old, got his groove on. Although he might have just been excited by Paul’s “special red shoes”.

The event was ideal for families as the kids were well catered for - with colouring stations, face painting and movies all on offer - leaving mum and dad a bit of time to enjoy themselves. Lily and Jacob were greeted with a balloon

each at the door which kept Jacob happy for our entire stay.

After throwing some mad shapes on the dance floor Lily headed off for a spot of face painting. It was lovely to be somewhere where we didn’t have to queue for 18 hours to get a butterfly and after her paint was applied she settled down to watch a movie with her new tribe of very friendly kids. (In fact when it was time to go we found

Lily and her friends painting the face painting lady who was taking it all in very good grace!)

Meanwhile we sampled a smorgasboard of BBQed scallops, fish n chips and a burger washed down with some of Yalumba’s finest. Heavenly to sit, scoff and be entertained al fresco. Winter? What winter! Seafood and Jazz by the Bay is definitely my new favourite way to spend a Sunday with the family.

YACHTSHARE, WIN A DAY ON THE BAYYachtshare has been working closely with the Club for over five years now and helped us raise over $3,000 as part of the U.G.L.Y. Bartender fundraiser (see p6) donating a “Day on the Bay” aboard their Jenneau 33, Sensation. There are now almost 40 owners in the Yachtshare fleet and we’re pleased to welcome them to the Club. With the boats only at dock less than 10 days in every month, they would have to be some of the most active Members we have! The Yachtshare owners have been very active socially, taking three of the boats to Riverfire this year, regular sailing on Wednesdays and their annual twilight cruise up the river is just around the corner. They’ve also had some exciting times welcoming new owners to the group. The Homburg family joined last month and had the pleasure of watching a mother humpback whale and her calf during their training. The Manche family also had an exciting training session, but for them the excitement came from learning how to handle the boat in 30kt winds. Fortunately Matthew Dunstan, an RYA instructor and now manager of the Yachtshare fleet, was on hand to coach them through it. “We don’t generally include heavy weather tactics on day two, but the Manche family did a great job and learnt how to keep themselves and the boat safe if they find themselves caught out by those thunderstorms which surprise us from time to time,” said Matthew. “I’m really impressed with the level of competence amongst the owners and their commitment to becoming better mariners. Some people join Yachtshare completely new to sailing, but because of the training program we put them through and then the frequency with which they are on the water, they come up to speed very quickly,” he said. The team at Yachtshare have been fielding enquiries for some time about the addition of a catamaran and this year they’re adding an 11m cat named “Perfection” to the fleet. “Moreton Bay is perfect cruising for a catamaran,” says Barry Pares of Yachtshare. “There are a lot of special places in the Bay that you can only get to in a catamaran and the extra living and entertainment space is something people have been asking about. We’ve already sold the first shares in the boat and she’s not even in the harbour yet!”. If you’d like to take a look at the new Catamaran joining the fleet, you can contact Barry Pares on 0437 836 434.

WATER WAY TO RAISE MONEY!

U.G.L.Y.QUEENSLANDBARTENDERSBREAKFUNDRAISINGRECORDThe Leukaemia Foundation would like to thank the 259 Queensland bartenders who took part in the 2013 U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year competition and collectively raised a staggering $259,000 in an effort to support blood cancer patients. Together they’ve proven that beautiful things can come from being U.G.L.Y. – that is “Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You”.

Held over six weeks from July 20 until September 2, the U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year campaign gave bartenders with a strong community spirit the opportunity to put their creativity and compassion to the test to raise funds for patients and their families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

Kristy Hollis from MBTBC was the highest fundraiser in Greater Brisbane South region, raising a staggering $9,099 undertaking a series of fundraising challenges including being dunked in ice cold water. “I had initially set a goal of $1,000 so I was overwhelmed by the support I received from the staff and patrons at the Club,” Kristy said.

Kristy has a close personal connection with blood cancer and said she was touched by the personal stories people shared with her throughout the campaign. “I decided to enter the fundraiser as my husband Michael had lymphoma and has just found out he’s gone into remission. Being in the hospital while he was getting treatment really opened my eyes as to how many people are affected by blood cancers. I also couldn’t believe how many people just in our local area had been affected by these diseases,” she said.

Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Bill Petch said he was overwhelmed by the outstanding achievements of the U.G.L.Y. bartenders and was grateful to the local businesses and communities who generously supported them.“The funds raised through the U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year will greatly assist us to continue to provide care to the six Queenslanders who are diagnosed with a blood cancer each day,” Mr Petch said.

“This was the third year that the competition was run statewide and it’s great to see that it has steadily grown in popularity with 259 Queensland bartenders taking part this year in comparison to last year’s total of 177 bartenders,” he said. “I would like to thank all the U.G.L.Y. bartenders, their staff and communities for helping to make the future a little brighter for blood cancer patients.”

“I would also like to extend my gratitude to our Principal Sponsor Hoshizaki for supporting the campaign and providing the major prize of a Hoshizaki product to the value of $7,500.”

Mr Petch said the Leukaemia Foundation was a not-for-profit organisation relying on fundraising events such as U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year and the generosity of the community to continue providing free support services to patients and families, along with investing in medical research projects.

We at MBTBC would like to thank the following businesses for their donations to help Kristy - John Crawford Marine, Beauty On Manly, Loafing By The Bay, Wine Gum Café, Oceania Yacht Brokers, The Cheese Cake Shop (Wynnum), Manly News Agents, Manly Harbour Florist, Manly Village Pizzeria, Manly Village Meats, Andersons Flooring(Capalaba), Samuel Smith, Greg Angel Agencies, Milkcraft, 1300epromo, T2 Carindale, Prissy Please Jewellery.

When I got a call to say, “Oh, by the way top Melbourne band Immigrant Union is coming to play a Sunday Session at MBTBC, can you do some media,” I thought I was having one of my usual delusional dreams of grandeur.

But, unbeknownst to me - Chef Ben Roy is in fact a friend to the stars and asked Facilities Manager Sam if he could organise a Sunday Session and have his mate’s band play. For those not in the know, Immigrant

Union features Brent DeBoer (of hugely famous The Dandy Warhols), Bob Harrow (Lazy Sons) and Peter Lubulwa (ex of The Galvatrons). Fellow members Dave Mudie, Bones Sloane and Courtney Barnett weren’t on this tour but their awesome back-up band did them proud.

My friends and I have been huge Dandy’s fans for years (even our kids like them) and were loving the new country twanging single Alison. Immigrant Union did not disappoint. Excellent tunes, flawlessly played and sung. Plus wonderful wry lyrics including the timeless, “Think I lost my dignity”, in an ode to drinking copious amounts of whisky. We’ve all been there, Bob, all been there. I folkin’ loved it. So, been there, seen that...And yes, I bought the t-shirt.

If anyone else is harbouring some famous friends...hand them over. ‘Alison’ is the first single off Immigrant Union’s sophomore album ‘Anyway’ coming out in late Feb 2014. More information is available on the band’s website www.immigrantunion.com.

Our Meet & Greet/New Members Night was well attended on Monday 4 Nov at 6pm. The Commodore and Committee members as well as Sub Group Captains and Members were all present to welcome our newest Members to MBTBC. The aim of the night was to familiarise new Members with their Club and to introduce them to our special interest groups and their activities. A lot of interesting conversations took place, mostly regarding our boats! Our New Members own boats including trailer, sail, motor boats which are berthed at the Marina and there are of course those looking to upgrade their vessels. Officer in Charge of Brisbane Water Police Senior Sergeant Warren Francis was our guest speaker who made a very informative talk to our new and current Members. So if you have not attended a New Members Night, be there for the next one in February 2014, and you will be informed of all the other features and benefits that you have being a Member of the friendliest boat club of all MBTBC.

JACKDUVOISIN

Iwasbothhonouredandhumbledtobegiventhisaward.IwashonouredformynametobewithRoyJohnsonandArthurPenwarns’namesaspreviousrecipientsandalsotobeassociatedwithAlison’snameasshewasawonderfulservantandagreatfriendtomeandmanyothersintheClub.

The Radio Room has provided me with a continuing interest since I retired. My early training was in the radio area through a radio trades apprenticeship and a diploma in Radio Engineering.

My time at the Club has reinforced and educated in a very practical sense my earlier training. Also when at work with the Commonwealth’s lighthouse authority, a small organisation with the entire Australian coast to cover, that was shuffled through several Government departments before morphing into the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, I gained a lot of operational and

organisational experience, much of it valuable in the operational area of our Radio Room.

After some initial difficulties with the Radio Room/deck interface John Cardillo and I developed a mutual respect and John asked me to get involved with the radio side of the 2010 Fishing Classic. In conjunction with VMR North Stradbroke we developed the radio protocols, your volunteers contributed about 85 hours to the event, we advised the water police of the processes, assisted AMSA when one of the competitors accidentally set off an EPIRB, only knowing this had happened when the helicopter appeared overhead, and we provided a list of good operators to Maritime Safety Queensland to allow the awarding of prizes. All in all a good Club event.

That is when I first got to work closely with Samantha Bell our Facilities Manager. Sam was able to see that we weren’t just a bunch of sometime prickly blokes (the lady operators are fine) carrying a Grumpy Old Men epithet, GOM had possibilities as Grand Old Masters. Sam has been a great supporter of the Radio Room and today we enjoy a great working relationship. While this may sound bureaucratic Arthur and I have over the years adjusted our operating instructions to meet changing situations and the document provides sound guidelines for new and practicing operators as well as providing a measure of protection for the Club in the event of any difficulties that may arise from our operations. The Radio Room handles some 5 to 6,000 calls each year, these include boat recovery communications with the various rescue services, working with Brisbane Water Police, the issuing of navigation and whale watch warnings, and scheduled weather forecast broadcasts, all aimed at providing the best service we can to the boating community.

Arthur Penwarn and I ”press ganged” Jack Kennedy into becoming our Communications Officer earlier this year. Jack has been a proactive and energetic leader and has now been appointed to the Club’s Management Committee where his fertile mind is already in gear looking at what improvements he can initiate. His previous business experience in Rockhampton running two donut shops (Donut Forsake Me Oh My Darling was his theme song) where he sold dietary donuts, in fact these were a bag of donut holes for $2.60, will give you some idea of the immensity of his entrepreneurial skills. I’m sure he will be a fine acquisition for the Committee.

Last but not least my thanks to the Club staff and fellow volunteers who help with all the bits that make achieving things that much easier.

Regards,Jack

Neale Edwin Poultney A lover, and a fighter: Neale was a prolific athlete and had a natural talent for most sports; boxing and tennis were just a few. He also joined the National Service (“only because he knew he would look good in that uniform”). As well he got to go dancing at the local RSL, where he was to meet and marry his future wife, Iola, the love of his life. Getting a woman like Iola to love him was Neale’s greatest accomplishment.

A father: He proudly became a father for the first time to Steven Neale on the 19th August 1960, then Donna Iola on 22nd January 1963 and last but not least, the one that claims to be the favourite, but we all know better, Robyn Lea on the 3rd May 1964, (it’s a family joke). He also had seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A fisherman: Neale bought his first house, a huge house on top of Alkoomie Street, Wynnum. The house was so big he decided to cut it in half, subdivide and sell the other block. Inside the house was some beautiful antique furniture, a very large dining room table with chairs so big they couldn’t get them out of the house.

Well Neale with his very keen eye and appreciation of the fine timber decided that this beautiful old table would make fantastic fishing reels. And that’s what he did. The 60s were the magic decade; because this was the decade that Neale bought a boat. The second love of his life. Neale also joined his first boat club, the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club. At the time he did not realise that this small gesture of joining would almost be like choosing a retirement home, because after Neale did retire the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club became his other home.

He loved his Club: Neale spent a lot of time at the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club. Helping run the fishing competitions, and just basically helping in anyway he could. It was this decade that Neale was nominated to be Commodore and low and behold he was voted in. This title made him feel like a God. One of the men who nominated Neale was Roy. Neale and Roy became the best of friends, they were the dynamic duo. They did everything together. They worked down at the Club; they would eat out together down at the Club, and of course fish and crab together. Roy was Neale’s wingman and what a fantastic wingman he was. Towards the end Roy would visit Neale every single day without failure. Roy, we are sure Neale would have thanked you for your friendship. The Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club consumed Neale so much that every now and then Iola would ask Neale to fix something at home and Neale’s reply would be, “I will do it when I get home, I just have duck down to the Club to fix something”.

Neale and his family spent Christmas holidays at Amity for the last time in January 2013. Neale would say “I’ve already passed my used-by-date”, this could have been because he was a little bit stubborn or as we would prefer to say ‘determined’. His strength and the type of man Neale was, was what got him through. He fought every step of the way. Neale was still fishing and crabbing and playing golf for most of 2013. He was always passionate about whatever he did but most of all about his family. Along Neale’s journey of life he met and made some amazing friends, too many to mention. Neale will be sadly missed but never forgotten.

Alan Robert PayAlan was born at Bulimba Brisbane on 23rd March 1929 and was the first born to Robert Harold and Pearlie Emilie Pay of Bolan Street Bulimba. Alan attended Bulimba State School and started his electrical apprenticeship with Warburton & Frankie in Brisbane in 1945.

He started work at G. J. Coles in 1955 at their Fortitude Valley Store 207 as the Plant Engineer. Progressing up the employment line he moved into management and became State Engineer for Coles and Penney’s and moved into Head Office. In 1980 he was inducted into Coles 25 year Club.

During his early married life he always had an urge for boating and had his grandfather’s 12 foot dingy with a plank bottom which had to be wet with hessian bags a week before using the boat. This dingy only had oars but he made an outboard motor from a lawn mower and washing machine and also hand made a brass propeller. He would then set off in this dingy from Wellington Point and fish the coral banks nearby

with his father and eldest son John. After a couple of years he then replaced the bottom of the dingy with ply because coming home from a fishing trip the timber trailer broke loose from the car and the back of the boat ran into a lamp post. He decided that a bigger and better boat was needed. So in the early 1960s he built a 16 foot half cabin timber and plywood boat with a fiberglass exterior under his parent’s home at Bulimba. A second hand 33 hp Evinrude outboard motor was purchased to drive the new boat; a new steel trailer was built and his new pride and joy which he named Gladal was ready to go.Alan joined the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club in the early 1960s, his membership number was 6 and in 1974 Alan became a Life Member of the Club. Alan was Commodore from 1983 to 1985 and during this time he signed the lease documents for Southern Haven on South Stradbroke Island with the then Albert Shire Council. In 1990 he retired from K Mart Maintenance and operated his own plant inspection business for 5 years. While still working in his own business he devoted many hours of volunteering his labour and knowledge at Manly and Southern Haven. When the working bees stopped at Manly several retired members had their own working bee on a Tuesday which rumour has it was only for Hilda’s Scones. In May 2007 Gladys passed away and Alison then looked after Alan. Then in 2010 Alison lost her life to cancer but Alan would not leave the family home while well enough to look after himself. He had plenty of family support and friends who would visit. He also had feathered companions at the house which he would feed morning and afternoons. On the early hours of Saturday 10th August he took a severe stroke and brain haemorrhage and passed away at the P.A. hospital on Monday morning 12th. Alan was a stalwart of the Club which he loved dearly and he will be sadly missed.

ALL NEW RADIO LICENCE COURSERAD I O   ROOM

Areyoulicencedandconfidentwhenusingyourmarineradio?Wellnowit’stimetolearnandgetyourlicence.

Whilst 27mhz radio users are not required to obtain a Marine Radio Operators licence if you have a VHF radio you are. 27mhz radios have a very limited range and channel selection whereas a VHF radio can be used for calling over much further distances, especially when using the repeater stations located in the Bay. Repeater stations, in certain conditions, can effectively double the range of your VHF radio.

Your Radio Room VKQ447 has identified a need for Marine Radio Operator Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP) and Marine Radio Operator VHF Certificate of Proficiency (MROVCP) courses to be held in the Wynnum/Manly area and is currently developing a course to be run at the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club starting in around April 2014.

Many of you will have completed the Know Your Marine Radio Courses we have been running over the last 12 months. Well this will be the next step up. Whilst we will still continue to run the Know Your Marine Radio Course, a lot of the information we passed on will be included in the marine radio licence course.

The licence course will be developed around local needs and conditions and while we have yet to test the timing of the course, we anticipate that it will take about 5 to 6 hours to complete. To accommodate busy work schedules, we plan to run the course over two nights, probably Monday and Tuesday nights, with an exam at the end of the second night.

There is a cost for the course as it is run externally by the Australian Maritime College in Launceston in Tasmania and they will supply us with Reference Manuals, Exam papers and finally a Marine Radio Licence. The cost will be approximately $180 for non full Members and $150 for full Members. This figure may vary at the time the course starts.

Our intention is to make the course as relevant and interesting as possible. For relevance, we will be including as much local information such as local repeater stations, rescue stations, maps and diagrams when explaining marine radios their range and ability.

For interest, we will be using as much hands on experience as possible including batteries, antennas, connections to show you maintenance procedures and all participants will make a radio call to a local station.

Besides a Reference Manual you will also be provided with reference notes for the course so you can familarise yourself with the main points prior to the exam.

VKQ477 - YOUR RADIO ROOM AT MBTBC RAD I O   ROOM

We are trying to leave no stone unturned when developing this course and our resident retired teacher Chris Mackie is doing the hard slog ably supported by one of our new operators, also a retired teacher, Ian Lowe and our irrepressible lighthouse engineer Jack Duvoisin.

We will be very disappointed if you find time to sleep during the course and we will really appreciate your feedback. Because of the amount to cover and the time to do it in, time will be tight but we are sure you will enjoy the course especially the hands on. Finally, we will be limiting numbers on the course to around 20. We already have a few early birds, so if you are interested, please call me on 0419 675 180 and I will confirm your place on course #1.

Remember, your Club is there for you especially whilst you are on the water. VKQ447 is open Monday to Thursday 0700 hrs to 2130 hrs and Friday 0700 hrs to 1730 hrs. Some night shifts can be unmanned so please call before 1730 hrs on 07 3396 2778 if you require information on the weather, tides or any other boating information.

Cheers,

...You need to obtain a Haven Club key to access showers and toilets, ($50 deposit refundable when returned) so next time you are at the Club see Kerry or Sam at the office. $1.00 coins are needed for the showers and kitchen gas. There is safe, deep anchorage for all size vessels, a beach area for kids to swim (with adult supervision), showers, toilets, cooking facilities, new gas stove, undercover dining area, and at the end of the day whilst enjoying a relaxing drink at the sunset table, you will witness the most beautiful of sunsets on the horizon. The Haven is also well known for creating great friendships and wonderful stories told around the fireplace at night. There are even sing-a-longs around the campfire which the kids just love.

There is a bit of wildlife around the Haven. There is the Straddie Wallaby and a Lace Monitor (goanna) or two. The resident goanna is over 2 metres long and sometimes walks through the facility. Please do not approach this wildlife.Camping is permitted by contacting the Haven Rep. You will be allocated a camp site, if needed, and a plan of tent sites. Payment is made through the Rangers office, Helen or Steve 5577-2849, just a short walk from the Haven to Tipplers on your arrival.

How to get to Southern Haven? Well…you can launch your trailer boat at Horizon Shores Marina leaving your car and trailer in a secure area for a small cost of $20.00 per launch, no matter how many days. From Horizons Shores to the Haven you are in sheltered waters all the way, but for safety reasons it is essential you stick to the channel markers all the way. Horizons Shores has ice, shop, bait and tackle etc. and fuel needs.

And for larger vessels it is a pleasant trip from Manly using either Canaipa Channel or Main Channel, again pay attention to the channel markers especially on low tide. Please observe the 6knots – no wash areas. It is a 20 min walk across the island to the surf beach, but beware of the hazards of the surf and a 30 min walk, or even less in your boat, to Couran Cove bistro and café. At Tipplers you can obtain ice, groceries, and meals in the licenced cafe.

Just recently the Haven hosted the last day of the Interclub Bay Cruise which was held on the first week of the September school holidays. More than 60 boats and approx. 300 members from different boat clubs participated. They cruised along the Broadwater from Southport to Dux Anchorage at Sth Stradbroke where daily stopovers at different anchorages made the cruise a wonderful experience for all generations. The weather was almost picture perfect this year. Next year we would like to see more MBTBC Members involved in the Cruise. Your Haven Rep can give you more info or just log into the ICBC website http://www.interclubbaycruise.org.au/

Whilst relaxing at the Haven you can also book a Joy-flight on the Sea Plane, Cloud 9, which flies over regularly on weekends…A few of the Social Cruise Group Members booked a flight and some spectacular photos were taken of the Gold Coast and its waterways… and a great time was had by all.

For all “Virgin Haveners” we are planning a weekend for you to discover this little island paradise which is only available to you as a MBTBC Member. A proposed date for this is a weekend in January 2014. Contact the Haven Rep. on 0403 545 404 or [email protected] and I will email you details of this fun weekend when they are finalised.

We do ask that after you have enjoyed your Haven experience you leave the facility clean and tidy for others to enjoy, and please sign the book.

Regards,

Jeffrey, Haven Rep

THEMBTBCDEEPSEAFISHINGGROUPDEEP   S E A

Hi everyone,

We have been fortunate to have had some successful fishing trips so far at this point’s calendar year. Some good fish have been caught – a nice Pearl Perch over 2.9 kg and a Yellow Tail Kingfish head weighing over 5kg (a shark took a liking to the rest of the it!).

We have had an average of seven boats on each of the Deep Sea trips so far this year with several new Members becoming involved as well. Welcome to the Deep Sea section all of our new Members, we hope you are enjoying the experience.

I would like to advise all Members of changes to parts of the environment we utilise in our deep sea fishing endeavours. Firstly, the Northern Gutter has shifted some way to the north. Please consider this and make adjustments as necessary to your GPS plot line and course for the next trip, and as always, take care when crossing coastal bars. In addition, the Amity Channel has become quite shallow. It has become increasingly more common to use this channel therefore use caution when crossing due to the changed conditions.

As many would be aware, one of our great Clubmen passed away just recently – Neale Poultney, after a long illness. Neale, from “Old Dog”, loved nothing better than wetting a line with the Deep Sea group, he will be sadly missed. On behalf of the Deep Sea section we send our condolences to Neale’s wife and family.

The Deep Sea section will be holding our annual Christmas Party for Members on Saturday, 30th November at Peter Vandeleur’s (Social Organiser) home at Albany Creek. Please book early to allow for catering. You can contact me or any Group Committee Member for details.

To celebrate New Year’s Eve this year, several of the group are again returning to Southern Haven. There are camping sites available which need to be booked through the Club. All are welcome to join us.

To finish off, I would like to remind all Members of our monthly meetings. These are scheduled for the third Wednesday evening of each month. These meetings are held in the Stradbroke Room from 7.00pm. A Points Trip is always planned for the following weekend.

See you soon on the water,

Mick Tierney • Deep Sea Fishing Group

Asthe2013SailingSeasondrawstoaclose,lookingbackithasbeenaverybusyyear!

We’ve seen 56 boats across the start line on weekend Bay races and a fleet of 42 taking place in each of the three weekend long events to Sandgate, Canaipa and Karragarra Island. Nearly 10 new boats joined the fleet over the year which has created the need for a new division with five in total now.

Final results are being checked and the trophies engraved ahead of this year’s “Cocktail and Dreams” Presentation Night hosted by RQYS. With a mild year in regards to weather, numerous boats are in the running to take home trophies, showing the depth of boats in divisions and rewarding those who participate regularly.

The second 24hr and Big Lap Charity Yacht Race - supporting the Brain Foundation - www.moretonbay24race.com - hosted by MBTBC took place on quite possibly the most miserable weekend weatherwise of the year. 20-25kt SE’ly breezes mixed with total whiteout conditions in pouring rain endured for the entire 24hr event. Nevertheless, more than 23 boats crossed the start line and over $1,800 was raised for the Brain Foundation by participants.

A new event in 2013 hosted by MBTBC was a different kind of yacht race - the 3 Island Race - www.moretonbay3islandrace.com. This race sees Skippers and Crew relying on their Navigators to choose the best course in any direction and order around Mud, Green and Peel Islands. With over $1,000 in cash up for grabs the stakes were high. The race raised over $1,550 for the Stand Tall Charity - supporting children with Cerebral Palsy.

Recently the Combined Clubs ventured back to Karragarra Island and were again welcomed and hosted by the fabulous members of the Karragarra Island Yacht Club. Braziers on the beach, party lights in the palm trees and a live DJ created the warm and friendly atmosphere we are coming to know and thoroughly enjoy in this part of the Bay. An army of volunteers provided hearty meals for over 100 people in the evening and then again in the morning before the race back to Manly.

StHelenaCup2013

St Helena Cup is the signature event held by Wynnum Manly Yacht Club over two days and is considered the biggest and hardest regatta of Moreton Bay. With 96 boats competing, it is a team’s event where three yachts represent their clubs and battle it out on the water. Every year seems the same - you will get one day where it blows and the next usually light winds.

Last year MBTBC were represented by a newly put together team comprising of Supergoose, skippered by Mike Hinde, Bad Habits, skippered by Barry Thompson and Scamp, skippered by Mike Mollison. So when the team was announced as the 2012 winners of the St Helena Cup you can imagine the surprise, excitement and the million rums that followed in celebration! So for 19th & 20th October 2013, the same team was put together, reigning champions out to defend the Cup and represent MBTBC!

On Saturday we had 20/25 knots SE winds and what seemed to be a good day by all reflecting a repeat in similar

results from the year before. Supergoose positioned 34th, Bad Habits positioned 42nd and Scamp positioned 6th. However, Sunday was the decider; we all had to do better to get a better overall result. Sunday’s weather started off 10/15 knots SE and was going to swing around to the North. Supergoose got caught in the wind shift and was proving that they had to play catch up. Bad Habits and Scamp fortunately missed it and could power on. The race was shortened due to light winds, however with the light winds this meant the big kites could be flown and Supergoose’s massive purple kite powered over quite a few boats to the finish line.

Back at the Club everyone had mixed feelings waiting for results because surely it’s nearly impossible to win the St Helena Cup let alone twice in a row! When the results of day two announced Supergoose was positioned 32nd, Bad Habits positioned 1st, and Scamp positioned 5th! Well the team didn’t fail the mission and we can proudly announce that SUPERGOOSE, BAD HABITS AND SCAMP are champions once again of the St Helena Cup 2013 representing team MBTBC! A combined score over two days of 120 points (25 points ahead of 2nd place) resulted in a very comfortable win! Bad Habits also scored an individual 1st for Race 2! So once again, imagine the surprise, excitement and the millions of rums that followed in celebration after another win!

The final event on the 2013 Sailing Calendar will be the Moreton Bay Fun Race- www.moretonbayfunrace.com - December 7 and 8. A new weekend long format will allow participants to enjoy the scenery of Moreton Island and a social Christmas BBQ on the beach at the Little Sandhills on Saturday night. The race is open to ALL boats - monohulls and multihulls - Racers, cruisers and families.

The 2014 Sailing Calendar will be available shortly on the website - www.manlycombinedclubs.com. So for any new members or people interested in getting involved with their own boats or as crew, please email - [email protected] or call 0412 878 448.

We wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and look forward to doing it all again in 2014!

Every monthly fishing outing of the Inshore Fishing Group since the last edition of this magazine has been a success.

SUCCESS IN OUR MONTHLY TRIPS! I N S H O R E F I S H I N G

On all five occasions members have presented fish at the weigh-in.

In May members held a combined working bee and fishing trip at the Club’s Southern Haven. A general clean up and some maintenance of the Haven facilities was carried out on the Saturday. On Sunday the group went fishing. Dart and Bream were caught at the surf beach and mud crabs from the pots left overnight.

For June the Inshore Fishing Group returned to the Haven for the long weekend. There was a good turn-out of members and Bream, Whiting and Flathead were caught.

In July, seven boats fished Green Island and the Rous Channel in perfect weather conditions. The winter Whiting were in abundance but the catch of the day was a Mackerel landed by Anthony.

August saw the group fish overnight at Peel Island. Again we had perfect weather conditions and a good roll up. The best catch of trip was a 85 cm Jewfish caught by Aaron.

In September the Inshore Fishing Group fished the Brisbane River. The youngest member of the Group showed the experienced fishers how to catch Bream. Well done Jack.

Upcoming trips for the Inshore Fishing Group are;-

• December 8th - Mud Island • December 15th - Christmas Party

Any Member of the Club interested in joining the Inshore Fishing Group should come along to the monthly meetings. These are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Club. The aim of the group is to catch the biggest fish, not the most.

Regards,

John Haynes • Inshore Fishing Group • CASPAR

We are a group of all ages and backgrounds who share one thing in common, the love of being out on the water and having fun with likeminded people. It doesn’t matter what size boat you own, currently boats range from 17 to 43 foot, both power and sail. Many of us like to add fishing and crabbing to our trips though our emphasis is more on the social side rather than the catching, though we do get excited when a fish is caught.

Our trips/events since the last issue have been many and varied including –

LittleShipClub–Easter29and30March2013(unofficialouting). The three boats met at the end of the Manly leads and went over in convoy. We got there nice and early but Crystal and MJ had to do a side trip to Myora awaiting room on the pontoon. We were keen to get the crab pots out so both tenders were deployed. It was a pretty lazy day, lunch and then a spot of fishing. A couple of members of our group had an afternoon poppy nap. Late afternoon we mingled with the Wynnum/Manly Club that was sharing the pontoon and a few boat tours were undertaken. Drinks and nibbles on Crystal. Then the crowd gathered along the bank for the official naming ceremony of MJ, by the master of ceremonies. Champagne was poured over MJ’s bow while we all toasted her and the name was unveiled. Being Good Friday we all had a great feed of BBQ seafood, drinks and night cap on Crystal. After making sure that Tango arrived safety, we took the bus and visited friends at Adder Rock, followed by a walk along a couple of the beaches, a swim by guys, the girls thought the water was a bit cool, we returned to LSC for lunch. Deb and Jan ventured out again in the blow up kayak and have worked out how to go in a straight line, Deb paddles and Jan is the rudder. Drinks and nibbles on Crystal and tea at the Club. Sunday breakfast included an Easter egg hunt which the guys seem to enjoy. We said goodbye to Tango who stayed another night, one boat headed home and Crystal and MJ headed to Canaipa.

Paniyiri(BrisbaneGreekFestival2013)atMusgrovePark-Saturday18May2013. As parking around West End is difficult we decided that public transport was the best way to go. The first point of call was the food stalls for some BBQ Octopus and Yiros (BBQ lamb) and a large tray of Honey Puffs. We found a table and consumed not only the food but the first of many Greek beers. As someone had to stay at the table at all times we had various individual trips around the food halls and up to the Greek Club to find the best and most interesting food. Watched the Honey Puff eating finals and watched Greek dancing and listened to the variety of musical entertainers that were on during the afternoon. Then it was time for more food, BBQ Octopus, Souvlaki, Yiros, Honey Puffs, Moussaka, etc etc. Just before the fireworks it was time to indulge in the Classic Greek Deserts and many slices of “Galaktoboureko” arrived on the table. We watched the fireworks and then headed off in various directions to catch the bus and trains home. (Some with Galaktoboureko in hand for nibbles later). Weather was great, excellent company and far too much food and beer and wine was consumed.

SanctuaryCoveBoatShow–Saturday25May2013.We had our usual dream building trip to the Sanctuary Cove Boat show and spent the morning of drooling over luxury boats, some which would require a substantial lotto win to purchase, others were perhaps retirement boats. Lunch was our traditional seafood lunch at Georges by the window overlooking the harbour, as usual both the company and food was magnificent. With full bellies we spent more time walking from boat to boat checking out the latest in modern facilities and electronics and left about 4.00pm. A great day was had by all.SouthernHaven–QueensBirthdayLongWeekend,Saturday8toMonday10June2013. Arrival to the Island began on Friday, with a steady stream continuing into Saturday. Vessels of all shapes and sizes, from Jet

Skis to Rivieras and Sailing boats were in attendance and comfortably anchored in preparation for the exciting weekend ahead. Upon arrival stakes were claimed and everyone settled in for lunch. Camp sites erected, supplies shipped in on tenders and endless chatter about the impending evening’s entertainment. Sundowners began at 4pm with plenty of drinks and nibbles by the warmth of the fire beginning the evening of festivities and everyone donning their “S” persona! The night was fun filled with plenty of food shared by all. At meals end all hands were on deck to wash and tidy and settle in for a presentation/awards night to rival the Oscars. Prizes given: Best costume, Ann and Paul, School-girls, second prize to Darryl and Shelly, Spiders, with third prize going to John and Christine, Sailors. Day two started with everyone a little subdued. A group of adventurers went for a walk to the surf beach and witnessed the awesome power of Mother Nature as she takes back what is hers – the erosion was an awesome sight. Heading further along the surf beach, the beach access is all but covered in sand and slowly disappearing from sight. We continued on to wander through the Couran Cove resort before heading back to The Haven ending a two hour hike. Pilot Peter from Cloud 9, was drumming up business by offering 15 minute flights for adults at children’s prices. This was taken up by quite a few of us and everyone had a brilliant time with Peter adding a bit of a thrill ride to each flight! The evening began with a community dinner and community clean up, the fire was lit and we all gathered for a sing along. Ann entertained us with her amazing voice and ukulele. After she had exhausted her repertoire, the impromptu selection of songs began – mostly only the chorus of songs as the verses were forgotten. It was a slow start to the day three morning, a steady progression of breakfasts and clean ups, everyone started to load their boats and disassemble camp sites. The weather took a decided turn for the worst and everyone made their way from the Island. Although the weather wasn’t the best it didn’t dampen the spirits of all involved.

SandHillsMoretonIsland–Sunday7July2013(unofficialouting). Five boats attended. Seersha was already out on the water for the weekend at Little Ship Club and arrived Saturday afternoon after spotting turtles, dolphins and dugongs on their way and spent the night. The rest of us came for a day trip on Sunday. Crystal, MJ, Tango and John and June took their boat out for the adventure. MJ and Tango rafted up to Crystal for lunch. There were lots of very interesting things being caught on Tango, such as a shovelnose shark and a stingray. The weather was good and a fabulous time out on the water was had.

SouthernHavenweekend–Saturday17andSunday18August2013. A few couples arrived at Horizon Shores just a few minutes apart and headed off to the Haven together. After anchoring and unloading their goodies, the first timers received a quick tour of the grounds and explanations of how things work. This was followed by a lesson on the special beach anchoring system which required quite a few o-rings and time. Some went for a walk while the others shared some chips and chatted the afternoon away. At sunset the group shared stories, cheese, dips and crackers by the water. Dinner was prepared, drinks were poured and stories were told. John emerged as a well of historic information regarding the islands and Redland area. Everyone was in their bed by 10pm. It was a beautiful morning, a warm sunny day ahead. Anthony went off to the surf beach early in the morning to try his luck fishing, however the little and big fishes avoided him and his rod. Breakfast was eaten and everything was cleaned up. A few went for a walk across the island to the surf beach and then continued to the Couran Cove resort and back along the western beach to the Haven. Again John proved to be a well of information, he showed us the grave of two drowned boys marked by an old horseshoe on a close-by tree. After returning to the Haven the whole group sat together at the beach and had some snacks and drinks. Some fed the fish again to provide a bigger catch for someone else. Anthony drove in circles with his little kayak complaining of having only one engine for it, a second one would be most helpful in staying on a straight path. Everyone enjoyed an ice cream bought from the ice cream boat that stopped at the beach. The group finished packing up and started the trip home. What a felicitous weekend!

Future events - Day or weekend trips to Horseshoe Bay, Sand Hills, Little Ship Club, Southern Haven and camping weekends at Hastings Point and Somerset Dam. If you have a boat and enjoy great company and fun, this may be the group for you. We meet the second Sunday of the month at 4.30pm at MBTBC to discuss previous and future activities.

MEDALS FOR FLOOD HEROES

3 2   TRA I L E R   BOAT I NG   D ECEMBER   2 0 1 3

InAugustthisyear,theGovernor-GeneralofAustraliaawardedarecord44NationalEmergencyMedalstothevolunteersofBrisbaneCoastGuard(picturedabove),fortheircriticalworksavinglivesandpropertythroughouttheworstoftheBrisbaneFloodEmergencyinJanuary2011.

This is the largest number of Federal medals every awarded to any Coast Guard Flotilla, in the 50-year history of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association.

Brisbane’s Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk, then honoured the Manly-based Flotilla with a Civic Reception in Brisbane City Hall, at which their medals would be presented. The Lord Mayor said this was the first Civic Reception ever granted to any Coast Guard Flotilla in Australia.

Ian Ratcliffe, Coast Guard’s South Queensland Squadron Commodore, acted as Master of Ceremonies at this event, while Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta MP and Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk handed out the medals.

In his welcoming address before a large crowd of Coast Guard members and friends, the Lord Mayor said, “Brisbane Coast Guard volunteers are no strangers to floods. The Manly Flotilla was the only volunteer marine rescue unit to operate in the disastrous 1974 Brisbane Floods. In January 2011, they were the first volunteer emergency services asset activated by Brisbane Water Police, when the floods were declared a national emergency in the early hours of 10th January.

“Flotilla Commander Steve Fleming immediately began calling his members to action. Forty-four Brisbane Coast Guard volunteers responded, leaving jobs and families behind as they raced to the flotilla base in Manly. From there, Commander Fleming and Deputy Commander Allen Penman assigned search and rescue tasks in the most dangerous areas of the raging Brisbane River, and as far inland as the flooded town of Ipswich.”

“These local volunteers remained on duty day and night, sometimes at great risk to their own lives, until the emergency was officially ended. The Governor-General agreed this demanded considerable personal bravery and entailed heroic effort, and she therefore awarded all 44 Coast Guard volunteers National Emergency Medals for their efforts.”

The Lord Mayor concluded his address by saying: “These volunteers received no pay nor reward for their bravery during the floods. They deserve these medals and we owe them a lot more for their courage and dedication. They are true heroes, one and all.”

They don’t hand out National Emergency Medals like jellybeans. Last time the judging committee sat at the Honours and Awards Secretariat in Canberra, they considered 1,036 nominations for this medal. They

recommended only 75 to the Governor General, which is barely 7 percent. Over half of these went to Brisbane Coast Guard volunteers at Manly ... proving it’s a very difficult medal to earn.

These figures come from the Governor General’s own website:
