Copenhagen Business School
Copenhagen Business School (CBS) was
founded in 1917 by the Danish Society for the
Advancement of Business Education as a
private institution designed to meet business
sector needs for highly qualified graduates.
In 1965, CBS was integrated into the national
system of higher education and thus became a
self-governing university. Today the conditions
of CBS are regulated by the Universities Act.
CBS comprises two faculties: the Faculty of
Economics and Business Administration and
the Faculty of Languages, Communication and
Cultural Studies..
CBS has around 15,000 students including
more than 5,000 doing Masters degrees
and 170 involved in PhD studies. Over 1,900
students are from abroad. CBS employs more
than 350 full-time academic staff as well as 450
administrative staff.
The CBS faculty undertakes both basic and
applied research, offering undergraduate
and postgraduate education in the fields of
economics and business administration. In
addition modern languages for international
business communication in combinationwith topics such as management science,
informatics, commercial law, philosophy,
organizational communication, psychology and
politics are also offered. Teaching methods
at CBS are varied and require a high degree
of student involvement. The methods include
workshops, independent student work,
business games and cases in close co-
operation with CBS business partners, group
seminars and projects, and interdisciplinary
projects, which, in addition to developing the
students academic skills, also develops their
interpersonal skills and ability for independent
reflection and problem analysis.
In its mission statement, CBS strives to be
among the best institutions of higher education
in Europe in order to meet its goal of being a
major contributor to value creation in business
and society. CBS wants to train graduates who
are competitive in the international job market
and to develop new research-based knowledge
in partnership with companies and other
organizations. Participation in international study
programs and a high rate of student exchange
are two important elements in the CBS strategy
for internationalization.
CBS is one of the largest and most highly
reputed institutions of higher education and
research at university level in Denmark and the
largest business school in northern Europe. Itis the Danish partner in CEMS (Community of
European Management Schools), a member of
PIM (Program in International Management) and
is AMBA and EQUIS-accredited.
The supreme collegiate body is the Governing
Board which consists of a majority of external
representatives mostly from the business
community plus members elected from among
the academic and administrative staff and the
students. CBS is headed by the President.
Since the early 1990s CBS has been theDanish pioneer in the field of Executive Master
programs. The objective is to remain at the
cutting edge of continuing and further education
for highly educated executives and specialists in
todays knowledge society. This objective is met
by a wide variety of Executive Master programs,
which form CBS Executive.
The extensive network of CBS involving
the worlds best universities and business
schools creates an important resource base
of internationally recognized researchers and
teachers with invaluable experience. This
ensures that participants receive global solutions
to global challenges in an international learning
environment, which further inspires reflection
both in par ticipants and teachers.

International markets are deeply concerned about the
future supply of management talent required to power
the future business sector, and Copenhagen Business
School is among those taking a pro-active approachto develop executive talent. This is especially so in the
field of maritime transport and logistics, and we are very
proud of our Blue MBA executive program of shipping
and logistics, which the director Irene Rosberg and her
team have put on the world map.

In shipping today, organizations must focus on managing
through economic cycles, innovation, finding new markets,
understanding sustainability, and the best research and
development.A practical approach to these challenges is the strength of
the Blue MBA, where participating executives gain a wealth
of extra international experience from tutors, advisors and
fellow students.
Prof Peter Lorange, member of the Blue MBA advisory board and
professor of strategy in the Blue MBA program, president of Lorange
Institute of Business in Zurich and Immediate Past President of IMD
The program aims at giving participants up-
to-date insight into shipping economics and
modern management theories and their
application in the maritime sector.
The program adopts a holistic view of shipping,
integrating commercial, technological and
financial aspects as well as maritime law, supply-
chain management, and leadership challenges.
In this way, graduates of the program develop a
complete understanding of the challenges in this
sector.
The program takes students to a top internationallevel in business administration, reflecting
the needs of the industry in a world where
globalization, enhanced competition, and the
speed of technological change place ever-
increasing demands on executive management
skills.
Four governing themes are evident through-
out the program: leadership challenges;
globalization of the world economy; implications
of information and communication technology
development; and changes in logistics
requirements.
The final integrating strategy project serves
two purposes: for the candidate, the aim is to
integrate all topics covered in the program by
using real world data on a problem related to the
candidates own company. For the candidates
company, the aim is to have a strategic issue
thoroughly analyzed, with proposed solutionsand implementation plans.
This is a modular program - each of one
week - supported by a vir tual platform, where
assignments and group discussions enhance
the learning process.

Program Overview
The program consists of eight one-week
modules plus a final integrating strategy
project (thesis). All modules will deal with
leadership issues and personal development.
In the process of working with the integrating
strategy project (ISP) the students will give three
presentations and the last presentation will
function as the oral defence of the ISP/thesis.
Each module gives a thorough introduction to
reading material and motivates students for their
independent studies.
Students study the material in between sessions
and write an assignment for each module. These
assignments, as far as possible, will be focused
on a problem related to the candidates own firm.
For the final integrating strategy project, topics
should be chosen for their strategic purpose
and integrating function, giving participating
companies a valuable and practical analysis.
Venues subject to change.

Module Composition
Pre-MBA
Module 0: An optional refresher course for
participants who need to reacquaint themselves
with the fundamental issues in Accounting and
International Economics.
Shipping as a Business and a
Market
Module 1: Shipping as a business and a
market
This module provides an introduction to shipping
economics and combines an historical introduc-tion to shipping with discussions of current
issues shaping the future of the shipping
industry. It also aims at giving a broad overview
of the various shipping segments, shipbuilding
and other essential areas of maritime activity such
as insurance, broking, classification, financing
etc. The module will also give a brief introduction
to topics of great importance in the program,
such as innovation, supply-chain management,
strategy, and finance and risk management.
Understanding the Global
EnvironmentModule 2: Supply chain management new
logistical challenges
This module discusses main principles of
logistics and their application in shipping. The
module looks at implications for ship operators
because of increased customer demands
in terms of higher logistical requirements,
including environmental issues related to cargo
owner interests. Through a simulation game,
the students will gain an understanding of the
importance of information flows in the logistical
chain.
Module 3: International economics and
market analysis
This module has two main parts. The first par t
introduces formal economic models simulating
the behavior of shipping markets, based onbasic microeconomic theory. It focuses on
the tanker and dry bulk markets, with special
emphasis on the practical use of partial
equilibrium models, but also more short-term
forecasting models will be discussed, including
the pros and cons of various types of market
modelling methods and techniques, including
system dynamics. For shipping segments with
imperfect competition and economies of scale,
the module also looks at the potential use of
game theory in understanding market and
competitor behavior.
The second part aims at introducing theories of
international trade and macro-economic issues
like business cycles and currency markets. A
main focus will be on understanding the globali-
zation process.
Throughout the program, leadership and
personal development will be integrated with
the core content to ensure the participants
develop the skills they will require in their future
leadership roles.
The content will include coaching techniques,
interpersonal communication, negotiation skills
and conflict resolution. Participants will also
explore their own leadership style with the use
of psychometric measures such as the Myers
Briggs Type Indicator, FIROB and the Hogan
Development Survey.
The process will offer opportunities for
developing individual leadership skills,
managing team dynamics and meeting
the challenges of major organisational
change. This will be done via theoretical
input, simulations, experiential activities, peer
feedback and personal coaching.

Focus on Maritime Issues
Module 4: Ship design and the maritime
legal framework
This module consists of two main parts. The first
part aims at elucidating the role of ship design
as a response to perceived or estimated market
needs. New ship designs are typical responses
to expressed needs from customers with specific
transport requirements, new technologies,
changes in world politics, new strategies or
lessons learnt from previous ship designs. The
appropriateness of ships for transport needs,
their economy and operability are vital factorsof competitiveness within global markets.
Competitiveness and hence commercial success
depend on the optimum balance between
investment and operational costs positioned
within the target markets and technical and
operational innovations.
The second part of this module gives a brief
introduction to maritime law, with particular
emphasis on issues relevant for a shipping
manager such as charter par ties, liabilities,
tax issues, joint ventures, etc. It aims to g ive
students sufficient insight into legal issues to
be able to carry out fruitful discussions withmaritime lawyers. The module also discusses the
regulatory regime in shipping and international
political lobbying mechanisms, including
discussions on EU Competition Laws.
Module 5: Operations management and
information technology
This module focuses on the strategies and
management of operations, that is, how operations
can contribute to the business mission and the
competitiveness of the company. Strategic
alternatives and the design of the product/service
as well as the production system are important
issues. Planning and designing the total production
system in a supply chain perspective is covered
as well as quality management systems and their
application to shipping. Operational performance
is assessed together with lean thinking and continuous
improvement. Information technology developmentand its management implications are discussed
with special sessions on the use of e-commerce
and web-based systems as strategic opportunities
and marketing tools. The teaching format relies
heavily on the integration of real issues from
participants and other companies.
Core Management Issues
Module 6: Investment analysis, risk
management and finance
This module presents the basic theory and practical
applications of methods of investment analysis(capital budgeting), some basic principles of financial
accounting and per formance measurements.
The module introduces theories and methods
of risk management with a discussion of how
The Blue MBA provides great insight into essential
aspects of the shipping and logistics industry; it gives
the overview of the industry and it dives deeply into
fundamentals like the key drivers, opportunities and
risks for the various players in the industry. With world
class teaching staff and senior participants from most
parts of the industry, it is a dynamic learning experience
with a good coupling between theory and practice.

to apply the methods in practice. It also covers
discussions on empirical material related to the
functions of financial markets and the financing
of the firm. The presentation of case studies covers
financing of ships and shipping companies.
Module 7: Organization and international
marketing
The module has two main parts. The first part
places focus on knowledge creation, storage
and utilization processes in organizations,
specialization in organizational structures and
how structures can be coordinated by formal
and informal coordination mechanisms. It further
studies the organization of networks that allowaccess from members distributed over large
geographic distances, how they emerge and
how they can be developed and sustained. A
central issue is how such an organization may
facilitate learning and distribution of knowledge.
The second part of the module focuses on
international marketing, with an emphasis on
marketing strategies for service providers.
The module ends with a one-day workshop on
the Integrating Strategy Project.
Module 8: Managing strategy and change
This final module introduces theories of firmstrategy, discussing the strategy process,
the main characteristics of global strategies,
implementation of strategies, networks, strategic
This project is the final step before graduation
and aims at integrating the various topics by
choosing an issue related to each students
company and analyzing this in great detail,
using real world data. It helps the students
understand the manner of interaction of
various elements of management and how
best to combine the different theoretical areas.
To help students focus and to provide valuable
feedback in the process of writing the project
report, presentations are scheduled where
feedback is given by a panel of academic
and business experts.
These presentations cover the
four constituent parts of the
thesis as follows:
Industry analysis
Company analysis
Issue analysis

The integrating Strategy Project
alliances and intellectual capital. The main topic
of discussion is the implications on strategy
of the increasing globalization of international
markets. The module is a primer on theories of
strategy with examples from globally oriented
firms. The module also serves as an introduction
to the integrating strategy project, with sessions
on how to conduct a proper industry analysis.
Leadership and Personal Development:
The leadership and development modules are
integrated throughout the whole program. These
will enable participants to build on their existing
skills and practical experience to broaden their
range of leadership tools and techniques.
These modules will include consideration of current
leadership theories and group discussion on their
practical utility. Participants will also have an
opportunity to identify their own preferred
leadership style and how they can use this to best
effect in their organisations. We will consider how
the research on group dynamics can be applied
to leading high performance teams, and also
review how effective leaders coach their people,
manage conflict, negotiate with others and deal
with change. In addition to the theoretical input,
participants will be able to learn from each otherwith the use of simulation exercises and they will
be offered personal coaching to help them integrate
the key concepts into their day-to-day work.

...a holistic view of shipping, integratingcommercial and technological aspects
as well as maritime law, supplychain management, and leadershipchallenges.
I chose the CBS Shipping and Logistics eMBA because it gives me the general
management tools and knowledge any top tier internationally recognized MBA
would give me but all the case studies are from my area of expertise, shipping
and logistics, and this makes the learning so much easier. The fact that the CBS
Shipping and Logistics eMBA uses a truly best in class industry faculty withhands-on practical experience makes the theory easier to use in real life and the
discussions in class much more relevant.

The Blue MBA program provides a shipping
and logistics specific foundation to further
build your career on. The recruitment of
many management positions in shipping
has traditionally been to offer the best
Masters and Chief Engineers a shore-based
position. It is imperative to have insights in
how to operate a ship, however, it is equallyimportant to have a thorough understanding
of the market, the business environment and
how to manage and lead people. I therefore
see the Blue MBA program as the perfect
opportunity for people with technical and
sailing background to boost their shipping
careers. Although branch specific, the
Blue MBA topics within leadership and
economics are of a universal nature, the
program is therefore very well suited for
other industries that support the shipping
industry.
