Study Your MBA at HSBA in Hamburg

Studying your Master of Business Administration at HSBA is the ideal choice if you are looking for a state-of-the-art programme in English in one of Germany’s largest and most exciting cities.

Our MBA programmes have been designed for students with sub-stantial work experience and / or a first academic degree (which is not necessarily from the field of business administration). We also welcome students with a business administration degree who wish to develop their management know-how further.

The percentage of international students is high: 70% of all are from abroad. Many MBA students move to Hamburg exclusively for their studies, others already live here. All our programmes are taught in English.

We offer three MBA programmes: • The MBA Corporate Management

adresses students with at least two years of work experience looking to deepen their knowledge of management functions and business admi nistration. Three specialisations allow students to choose their preferred area of expertise.

• The MBA Shipping focusses on developing know ledge and skills for future leaders in the maritime industry all over the world. Therefore, this programme not only takes place in Hamburg, but also in London, Athens / Piraeus and Dubai.

• The Executive MBA is ideal for students with a minimum of five years work experience. The main goal of this course is to give students the skills to lead teams and provide them with the tools to head companies or divisions of companies. The Executive MBA adresses the needs of (future) leaders.

The programmes run on a part-time basis; for the Executive MBA and the MBA Shipping a full-time option is available, too. The latter gives the option to speed up the studies or giving international students the op-portunity to learn German.

HSBA’s mission is “Excellence – Commitment – Fairness. Our Values. Your Success.” Therefore it is our sci-entific approach to mould our MBA students into ethical, “honourable” cosmopolitan people with strong professional and methodological expertise as well as well-honed soft skills. We are convinced that commit-ment, respectability and innovative thinking are the basis for success in business. Additionally, HSBA’s aim is to provide excellent education to students regardless of their financial background, making various scholar-ships available.Currently, HSBA is the academic partner for more than 1,000 students and 250 cooperating companies.

»HSBA is like family. The motivation of our staff and lecturers is to always help students to reach their goals and to deliver programmes matching their business needs. We are delighted to welcome the best students at HSBA.«

HSBA CampusThe friendly atmosphere of HSBA‘s city campus, including the library, provides the best possible condi-tions for studying, while small study groups facilitate productive discus-sions and work. With our SQUARE HSBA Innovation Hub we offer optimal learning conditions and an environment to prepare for today’s and tomorrow’s digital challenges.

Student CommitteesWe are very proud that our students are active in many different com-mittees and develop their personal and soft skills in extracurricular activities. As a student you can join, amongst others, committees such as: Committee for Community Pro-jects, Entrepreneurs’ Club, Events Committee, HSBA Band, HSBA Cheerleading, HSBA Innovation, HSBA Finance Conference Team, HSBA Hockey, HSBA Rowing, Inter-

national Committee, News Commit-tee, Sports Committee, Stock Market Club as well as the Trade Fair Team.

Study ApproachHSBA’s academic approach follows the fundamental principle of duality: combining a challenging theoreti-cal study programme with practical professional experience.

Students acquire knowledge and methodological skills in lectures and apply these in practice, e.g. in challenging situa-tions or projects at their place of work. Based on these experienc-es, the knowledge acquired is then discussed, reflected upon and continu-ously expanded on in the lectures. In order to ensure sustained

transfer of scientific theory to com-pany practice, we select our teach-ing staff carefully. A combination of academic excellence and extensive professional experience in well-known companies is very important in this regard. The below illustration highlights how our mission is em-bedded in our study programmes which enable students to study and work at the same time.

Study at HSBAThe campus does not only offer excellent study conditions, but also a basis for an active student life. Our facilities are modern and our campus is bright and friendly. But what makes the atmosphere here at HSBA so special? This question can only be answered with “our students”. Apart from mastering a demanding curriculum, they are very motivated and participate in numerous student initiatives, committees and projects.

In contrast, the Maritime Busi-ness module gives students insight into the fields of inter-national trade, ship employ-ment and the current regula-tory framework. The module is taught in Hamburg and includes visits to selected companies, so as to familiarise students with the maritime cluster of Ham-burg.

In Maritime Law & Insurance advanced knowledge is provided with a focus on carriage of goods by sea, charterparties and their implications, marine insur-ance and protection schemes as well as claims and practical implications. This module is offered with the kind assistance and active support of the legal firm Ehlermann Rindfleisch Gadow Rechtsanwälte Partner-schaft mbB in Hamburg.

Advanced ModulesMaritime Economics & Manage-ment, International Business Clusters, Ship Finance and Development Stra tegies form the basis of the advanced modules.

Maritime Economics & Management concentrates on the fields of maritime economics and ship management as well as current challenges imposed by the regulatory framework and the evolution of the maritime markets. Topics include tramp and liner shipping acquisition of tonnage, digital ship and quality performance of ship

management. It takes place in Athens / Piraeus and Hamburg and provides students with numerous networking opportu-nities.

In the module International Business Clusters students gain international experience and get to know London and Dubai as leading global business centres. The focus of the module lies on financial issues (London), busi-ness in Asia, logistics and inter-cultural management (Dubai). It is of high value to the stu-dents to also learn about ques-tions such as ship financing and valuation (bank loans, equity, derivatives, etc.). These topics are combined in the module Ship Finance.

Lastly, the students learn an integrated approach to busi-ness development issues in the maritime industry in Develop-ment Strategies. The goal is to

The structure en-sures that students gain in-depth insights into modern management theory and the specific characteristics of the maritime industry.

The curriculum comprises thought-provoking lectures, state-of-the-art knowledge and discussions with busi-ness experts; this mix covers the needs of students aiming at a leading position in the industry.

Examination TypesDepending on each modules’ structure and content, the examination types vary. These include introductory exams, essays, term papers, active course participation, presentations or oral examinations.

Study TripA unique aspect of the MBA Shipping programme is the fact that students spend three study weeks abroad.

Examination TypesMost modules begin with a one-hour introductory exam which, depending on the content and structure, is combined with either a written paper (assignment, essay, term paper, project work), oral exam (oral report, oral exam, presentation) or written final exam at the end of the module. In order to successfully pass the intro-ductory exam, the students are provided with informa-tion on preparatory literature as well as some guiding questions in advance. Additionally, online learning tools in some partial-modules offer further support during the self-learning period. This procedure enables them to acquire a general understanding of the module content even before the module starts.

Study TripThe students can choose between four study trips and are in charge of the planning, organisation and im-plementation of the study trip themselves. The study trip elective focusses on different topics: Students in Silicon Valley, USA, learn about a current topic of busi-ness management and about the development of new business approaches and solutions based on the digital revolution.

Students in London, UK, focus on (corporate) com-munication in a digital world with a special emphasis on mobile and online advertising, while students in Brussels, Belgium, focus on EU public affairs and understand how businesses interacts with regulations and policy.

Students in Germany visit start-ups and corporates in Hamburg as well as Berlin, the vital hot spot for start-ups, and learn about young, growing and innovative companies during selected company visits.

Mentoring ProgrammeWithin the framework of the mentoring programme, students can discuss ques tions concerning their current professional background, work-life-balance or questions on their personal development. Furthermore, students have the option to expand their network via their mentor, or other mentors, and make valuable connections for the future. Networking events and regular exchanges make for a vibrant programme.

LEARN FROM YOUR MENTOR

The core of the mentoring pro-gramme is the idea that experi-enced executives and business representatives from different industries and branches pass on their experience, knowledge and skills to their mentees in order to support their personal and profes-sional development.

The content of the individual men-toring meetings is decided upon individually by the mentor / men-tee tandem. Generally it involves discussions related to professional challenges, networking or combin-ing work, studies and personal life. In the case of international stu-dents, the range of topics may be considerably broader. Through the mentoring programme, students may expand their network, improve coping with professio nal challenges and develop their personalities.

MBA ShippingThe mentoring programme for the Master’s students of the MBA Shipping is offered by the Verband Deutscher Reeder (VDR), i.e. the German Shipowners’ Associa-tion. Students particularly benefit from networking possibilities and discussing professional challenges with their mentors from the mari-time industry.

The VDR is a leading professional association of the German business community. It was founded in 1907 in order to facilitate a joint and con-sistent representation of interests within the shipping industry. With its more than 220 member compa-nies, the VDR represents the Ger-man shipping industry as the fourth biggest merchant fleet in the world. The majority of its member compa-nies are medium-sized companies.

MBA Corporate Management and Executive MBAThe students of the MBA Corporate Management and the Executive MBA benefit in their personal and professional development from the mentoring programme of the Versammlung Eines Ehrbaren Kauf-manns zu Hamburg e.V. (VEEK), i.e. the Honourable Society of Hamburg Merchants.

The VEEK (founded in 1517) embod-ies typical hanseatic values that have helped merchants in Hamburg to trade and offer services successfully for centuries and that are still just as relevant in today’s business world. Most of the members are owners, board members or directors of public companies. Mentors affiliated with the VEEK support and accompany the students on their path to the ma-nagement levels in businesses.

Living in Hamburg

Living in HamburgWith its maritime charm and historic openness, Hamburg is known as “the gateway to the world”, and for being liberal, cosmopolitan and multicultural. Hamburg has a lot to offer for hard working students who also like to enjoy life. The city boosts fantastic job opportunities in world famous companies or start ups as well as a rich blend of cultural diversity.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Hamburg is Germany’s second larg-est city with a population of 1.8 mil-lion, and houses the world’s second largest seaport. There are countless businesses in logistics, finance, advertising, multimedia, foreign trade, culture, tourism and many other industries. The area is one of Europe’s most dynamic economic regions and students recognise the potential, too: There are more than 100,000 students in the city, and around 11% are from abroad. The city is characterised by rough Hanseatic charm and a cosmopoli-tan atmosphere, and offers a rich blend of cultural diversity, rang-ing from museums and galleries to musicals and theatre, to sports,

world-famous nightlife and impor-tant landmarks like the harbour, Elbphilarmonie (picuture on the right) or the Speicherstadt – aUNESCO World Heritage site.

International and German students alike feel at home here, and it’s no surprise that Hamburg is repeatedly cited as one of the best German cit-ies to live in. Its high quality of life is also due to the fact that is it a very safe city.

Hamburg is perfect for study, work and leisure. HSBA ensures that all new students feel right at home by offering individual support depending on each student’s unique situation.

HSBA’s website provides informa-tion on visa and resident permits, accommodation, German language courses, student support facilities and much more. HSBA is like fam-ily, and we are looking forward to welcoming you to your new interna-tional family in Germany.

What happens after Graduation?HSBA graduates are making their way into leading positions in business – worldwide! We know that the MBA programmes will pay off, not only from an academic perspective but also with respect to career paths and work-life-balance. The HSBA Alumni Associa-tion offers our graduates the chance to stay in contact and benefit from the many net-working possibilities. We are proud of what our more than 1,950 graduates have already achieved – and look forward to helping you to tap your full potential!

BENEFIT FROM OUR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

MBA Corporate ManagementGraduates of the MBA Corporate Management programme often work as project managers, prod-uct managers or team managers in companies from all industries. They usually start with mid-sized budgets as well as some personnel responsibilities.

Executive MBAEMBA graduates already tend to have many years of work experi-ence. After finishing the Executive MBA, they are usually promoted to executive level or – sometimes – start their own business.

MBA ShippingGraduates of the MBA Shipping have gained the skills and the knowledge to take on more respon-sibility in their companies. Usually after their studies, they take on leading roles in Shipping or – in some cases –, with their MBA, leave the industry and look for new op-portunities.

Our graduates work in Hamburg, other cities in Germany but also worldwide.

HSBA Alumni AssociationAll HSBA graduates are invited to stay part of the “family” by becom-ing a member of the HSBA Alumni Association. Members benefit in many ways from the national and international network of HSBA’s alumni. The association provides its members with an online register which includes members’ contact details as well as information on Master’s degrees and Executive Education opportunities at HSBA, job offers and other activities. This way we stay in touch – even after you leave!

Assistance from the EmployerOur Master’s programmes are de-signed to train students for manage-ment tasks in companies and to lay the foundations for successful co-operation. HSBA ScholarshipsHSBA wishes to ensure that highly qualified and motivated candidates are able to attend the Master‘s de-gree programme despite the course fees. Thus, HSBA supports particu-larly gifted applicants who require financial assistance in different ways. Apart from the early bird dis-

count of 10%, a few HSBA scholar-ships for a 25% and 50% reduction in the fees are offered for all MBA programmes.

Income Share AgreementCHANCEN eG takes care of stu-dents’ tuition fees. Only with regular employment after graduation and a minimum income of over EUR 21,000 per year do graduates pay back a fixed percentage of their income over a maximum of ten payment years. This way students can focus com-pletely on their studies at HSBA.

Germany ScholarshipsHSBA awards up to five “Germany Scholarships”. These are awarded based on performance and amount to EUR 300 per month. 50% stem from the German government and 50% from the university‘s own pri-vate funding.

MBA Corporate Management & Executive MBA: VDI ScholarshipThe VDI, Verein Deutscher Inge-nieure, joins forces with HSBA and awards a free study place on the MBA Corporate Management or the Executive MBA for one member of the VDI.
