Chapter1:WhyYouShouldMakeYourOwnSoap

●“Store-boughtSoap”isnotRealSoap.Soapsboughtfromthestoremaylookniceandpretty.Theymaysmellamazingtoo.However,themajorityoftheproductsontheshelfdon’tactuallyevensay“soap”ontheirlabels,ifyoulookcloselyonthepackage.Instead,theymightbecalledbeautybars,moisturizingbars,orbodybars,butnot“soap”.Why?That’sbecausethesebarsreallyaren’tsoapanditisillegalforthemtoclaimtobe;they’redetergents.

●“Store-boughtSoap”containsharmfulchemicals.Themanufacturershaveremovedmostofthegood,naturalstuffthatoccursinthesoapmakingprocess,andreplaceditwithsyntheticlatheringagentsandharshchemicals.Thesecheap,plentifuldetergentbarsarenotonlybadforyourskin,butthey’realsobadfortheearth,too.

STANDARDSOAPMAKINGPROCEDURES

Nowthatyouhavereadthesafetyguidelinesandthechecklist,let’sgooversomebasic,step-by-stepinstructions.Dependingontherecipeyou’remaking,thestepsmightbealittledifferent.Butforsimplerecipesyoucanconsidertheseasstandardsoapmakingprocedures:

1. Startbyweightingallyouringredients.Don’tforgettoallowfortheweightofthecontainersbyusingthetarefunctiononyourdigitalscale;

2. Toprepareyourlyesolution,puttheweightedwaterintoabowlorpot,preferablystainlesssteel.Thenslowlyandcarefullyaddthelye,stirringconstantly.Areactionwilloccur,heatingupthewater.Donotletthewaterboilanddon’tbreathethefumes.Setasidetocool.

3. Whilethelyesolutioncoolsdown,addyourweightedoilstoastainlesssteelpan.Heatgentlyuntiltheoilsaremelted.

4. Takethetemperaturesofyouroilsandthelyesolution.Whenbotharewithin10degreesofeachother(ideallyinthe100to125Frange),slowlyaddthelyesolutiontotheoils.

5. Mixgentlyatfirst,untilthemixturetakesasmoothtextureandcolor.Thenturnonyourimmersionblenderandmixthoroughly,inshortburstsof20secondssoasnottoburnyourblender.

6. Atsomepoint,yourmixturewillreachtrace.Traceiswhenthesurfaceofthesolutionstartstoshowripplesfromyourmixingandtheripplestendtostayonthesurface.Itshouldlookalmostlikeverythickcustard.

7. Ifyou’readdingessentialoils,fragrances,colorantsorotheradditives,thisisusuallythetimetodoit—unlessnotedotherwise.

8. Pourthisintothemoldsandplacetheminthesettingarea,then9. coverthemwiththeblanket.10. Letthemoldssitforabout24hours,thenremovetheblanketsandlidand

letthesoapairinthemoldforanotherfewhours.11. Youshouldhaveanicehardblockoffreshsoap,whichyoucannowremove

fromthemold.Ifit’sstillabitsoft,lettheblockofsoapsitforadaytofirmupbeforeunmolding.

12. Whenthesoapisfirmenough,unmoldandcutitintosmallbars.13. Placethebarsinanopenboxordryingrackfor4to6weeks.Makesurethe

barsdon’ttouchoneanother,andremembertoturnthemeveryonceinawhile,soallsidescandryequally.

14. Whileyoushouldbeabletotestthesoapafter2weeks,itcouldstillbeabitharshonyourskin.So,resisttheurgeandwaitafewmoreweeks.

15. Thelongerthesoapcures,themilderitwillbe.

SAFETYGUIDELINES

●Alwaysstorelyeinair-tightcontainers.Labelthecontainersappropriately.Alabelwith“DANGER!–SodiumHydroxide”andaskullandcrossbonesorabigredXinacircleisnotoverkill

●Keepcontainersoutofreachofchildrenandpets

●Preparethelyeandwatersolutioninawellventilatedarea.IfIusethekitchensink,Imakesurethatthestoveventisonandthatthewindowabovethesinkisopen.Iactuallyprefertomixitoutsideifitisn’twindyandtheairtempsarecomfortable.Ihaveanoutdoorsinknearmypottingtablethatworkswellforthis.

AVOCADOSOAP

Avocadohasmanybenefitsfortheskin,whetheryoueatitoruseittopically.Theoilcontainsprettymuchthesamebenefitsasthefruitsuchashealthyfats(likeomega3),phytonutrientsandvitaminsA,DandE.

It’salsorichinminerals,especiallypotassium,whichhelpspenetratetheskinevenly,quicklyanddeeperthanmostotherplanoils,makingtheskinsmoothandmoisturized.

Usingavocadooilforsoapmakingwillincreasetheconditioningpropertiesofyourfinishedproductandaddcreaminesstothesoap’slather.

RosemaryOleoresinExtract(ROE)isanaturalantioxidantextractingredientwhichwilleffectivelyextendtheshelflifeofyouroilsandcombatoxidationinyourhomemadesoaps.Youneedonlyatinyamount-between.02%and.05%PPO.Sofor1000gramsofoil(alittleover2lbs.)you’dusebetween.2and.5gramsofROE.

AvocadoPuree:Usingavocadopureetendstogreatlyreducetheamountofbubblesyougetinyourlather.Toavoidthat,reducesuperfatto3%.Thatwillhelpyougetluxurious,creamylatherandstillkeepsomeofthebubbles.

Theimportantthinghereistomakesuretogetyouravocadofleshverysmooth.Useyourstickblendertothefleshinalittlebowlandprocessuntilallthebumpsaregoneandit’s100%smooth.Addtheavocadopureetotheoilsatlighttraceandmixsomemoreuntilfullyincorporated.

Sincethevastmajorityofyourpureeiswater,youcansubstitutehalfthewateramountwithpuree.

BAMBOOCHARCOALSOAP

BamboocharcoalpowderisprizedinAsiaforitsskincarebenefits.It’sgreattousewithanyskintype,butabsolutelyheavenforoilyskin!

Charcoalpowderabsorbstoxins,impuritiesandexcessoilbypenetratingdeepintothepores.Itwillgentlyexfoliateyourskinwithoutleavinganyresiduesbehind,anditsanti-bacterialandanti-fungalpropertiesmakeitidealforanyonewhosuffersfromacne,psoriasisandeczema.

Whenincontactwithwater,charcoalpowderreleasesmanybeneficialminerals,suchascalcium,potassiumandmagnesium,creatingasoothing,relaxinghotspring-waterlikeeffect.

Runthisrecipethroughalyecalculatortofindouthowmuchlye,waterandoilsyou’llneedforagivenamountofsoap.Tomakea2poundbatchat5%superfat,you’llneed:

BEESWAXSOAP

Beeswaxisanaturalproductofnaturethatwewouldhavetogivecredittothehoneybees:ittakestenpoundsofhoneytomakeapoundofbeeswax!Beeswaxhasbeenutilizedoverhistoryfordifferentpurposesandavarietyofniches,frompaintingstoPaschalcandles.

Today,therearemultitudesofusesofbeeswaxcouldbeencasedinasoap.Itisknownforlockinginmoistureinsidetheskin.Beeswaxcankeeptheskinsuppleandsoft.Youcouldsaygoodbyetodryandcrackedskin.Beeswaxalsocoverstheskinwithafilmcoatingonceapplied.Thisthenprotectstheskinandavertsdamagingfactorsintheenvironment.Antibacterialandanti-inflammatoryaresomeoftheinnatepropertiesofbeeswax.

Beeswaxcontainsthenaturalhealingpropertiesofhoney.Thismakesbeeswaxinsoapagoodsootherofrashesandcouldmendskinproblems.Italsowhichmakesitahealingadjunctasfightingbacteriaisamainstepinavoidingfurtherexacerbationandinfectionoftheskin.Sinceithasaverylowirritationandallergenicpotential,itissafetouse.Itcouldberecommendedtothosewhohavesensitiveskin,andthosenotakintooverthecounterandchemicallyheavyproducts.Furthermore,itdoesnotclogpores,whichisalsoapreventivestep.Blockedporesleadstotrappingofoilsanddirtintheskin,whichcausesinflammationandinfection.

CASTILESOAP

CastilesoapisanameusedinEnglish-speakingcountriesforoliveoilbasedsoapmadeinastylesimilartothatoriginatingintheCastileregionofSpain.It’sanall-vegetablesoapmadeprimarilywitholiveoil,althoughsometimesitcanalsocontainsmallamountsofotherplantoilssuchasthosefrompalm,coconut,hempandjojoba.

Thisrecipeuses100%oliveoil,whichmakesforaverygentle,lowsudsing,softbarthatcanbeusedbothonthebodyandontheface.It’sgreatforallskintypes,speciallydry,sensitiveandmatureskins.Itcanevenbeusedforbabies.

Becauseofthehigholiveoilcontent,thissoaptakeslongertoreachtrace,somakesuretouseamixer.Italsotakeslongertocure(atleast6weeks).Makesurethesoapstaysdrybetweenshowers,oritwillmeltquickly.Therecipeprovidedbelowismadewith32ouncesofoil/fattomakea2poundbatchofsoap.

Buttherearetwowaystoincorporatecoconut-derivedingredientsinhomemadesoaps.Infact,there’sanothercoconut-productthatisabitunderutilizedinsoapmaking:coconutmilk.

Gotoyourfavoritelyecalculatortorunthenumbers.Use5%superfatandreplacethewaterwithcoconutmilk,justlikeyouwouldwithgoatsmilk.
