Blue Mountains Artist extends reach to The

Big Apple“Out from Down Under and Beyond” is the theme for New York based Agora Galleries new exhibition starting on May 12th.. Alison-Jane Rice, a local Leura artist, will have works on display in the exhibition.Agora Gallery is a fine art gallery established in 1984, located in the heart of New York City’s Chelsea art galleries district. It is famous for showcasing a spectacular array of talented artists from around the world.Alison-Jane’s contributions to the exhibition include works in Watercolours. “Watercolor, she says, “Is an immediate fluid channel for my emotions.” Her art revolves around an interest in the flora, fauna and landscape of her homeland, New South Wales, and the rich culture of indigenous mythology surrounding it. Fluid, maternal and steeped in spiritual prose, Rice produces work expressing her intuitive response to nature and the “physical sensations of the earth.”An activist as well as an artist, she received the World Health Organization Healthy Cities Award for contributions to Youth, Arts and Environment in 1994.

Mount Victoria War Memorial Refurbishment

Vandalism and a lack of proper maintenance over the years had led the Mount Victoria War Memorial to be in a state of disrepair. Recently the Blackheath/Mount Victoria RSL Sub Branch has been working on refurbishing the memorial. The journey began with grants and fundraising and the Blue Mountains City Council has been engaged to carry out the work. “It has been a slow and demanding project but the end is in sight and it will be worthwhile” said Tony Jacques of the Blackheath- Mount Victoria RSL Sub Branch.“The BMCC has been engaged to carry out the work and is doing a great job. The memorial is being stabilised, it will be re-rendered and repainted , the spheres that had been broken off have been replaced and the nameplates replaced. It should look as good as new and all

Mt Vic locals should keep a fatherly eye on it if they are in the area,” reports Tony. There will be a rededication to which all descendants and locals will be invited.Below: The refurbished memorial.

Getting out is easy with kids!

Have you ever thought a walk in the bush would be a good idea, but worried your pram or stroller would be a hindrance? The Fairfax Heritage Track at Blackheath may be the way for you to get out and enjoy the bush with toddlers and children. The 1.8 kilometre track was purpose built in 1987 to provide access for people with kids, prams and wheelchairs. The easy grade is suitable for all ages of walkers, and rest spots are provided along the way. The track begins at the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre, where an interactive exhibition explains the formation of our magnificent landscape. Within the Heritage Centre is a theatrette with daily screenings of videos, an art gallery and a shop where you can stock up on Australian made gifts, and meet our helpful staff. The Fairfax Heritage Track is a great way to introduce the kids to the extraordinary variety of plants that live in the upper mountains, and don’t forget to show off our scribbly gums, heavily marked with the trails of hundreds of little caterpillars. You may even see a red triangle back slug, one of the creatures that love damp cool weather. Misty days make this track even more exciting as each turn brings a new forest view; with groves of grass trees giving way to the giddying heights of George Phillips Lookout, on the edge of the cliff. The lookout is fully fenced, and a stone shelter built around 1920 is a favourite place to shelter or have lunch. From here it’s a short walk to views of Govetts Leap waterfall, the tallest single drop waterfall in the Blue Mountains. The return walk is the same, or a slightly steeper gravel track follows Govetts Leap Road back to the Heritage Centre.

Ladies Probus Club Goes Aquatic

On Friday 8th April, the Ladies Probus Club of the Upper Blue Mountains took to the water on the Tall Ship the “Southern Swan” on Sydney Harbour. It was a perfect day with the sun shining on the water showing the harbour at her best. The ladies were invited to help raise the sails and one trepid member took them up on it, but most were too busy enjoying themselves with a glass of champagne or wine and a very good buffet lunch. Fellow passengers lined up to have their

photo taken with the group. The Probus crew was very surprised at how still and quiet it was when the ship sailed. It was a truly memorable day.The Probus Club always offers something to do- planned trips for the club include a tour of the State Theatre and shopping in King St Newtown. The Probus ladies have their next meeting at the Leura Golf Club on Wednesday the 18th May at 10 am. Please ring Diana 4784 1304

The Leura Gardens Festival

Needs A HandOne of the Blue Mountains iconic annual events is the Leura Gardens Festival taking place October 1-9. The festival is entirely managed and run by an army of dedicated and committed resident volunteers.

The Festival raises funds for medical equipment and works at Katoomba Hospital. Last year more than $80,000 was donated.

More than 300 happy helpers contribute during the festival’s nine days and an invitation is extended to interested locals to join to the ranks of volunteers.

Volunteers assist by tasks including garden sitting, selling tickets and helping visitors from near and far enjoy the wonderful spring gardens.

Volunteers can select the times they wish to assist, either a morning or afternoon shift of three-and-a-half hours duration.

Both male and female volunteers are invited to participate.

Volunteers who lend a hand during the Gardens festival are not required to have deep knowledge of the subject- more important is a welcoming and outgoing manner.

At the end of the festival all of the volunteers are invited to a thank you barbecue allowing the festival committee to say thanks for their contribution. Contact Ray or Margaret Wiles on email: [email protected] or telephone 4784-1643 for further details.

Permaculture Blue MountainsPermaculture is the practice of designing sustainable human habitats by following nature’s patterns.Origins... In the mid 1970s two Australian ecologists, Dr. Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, started to develop ideas that they hoped could be used to create stable agricultural systems. This was in response to the rapidly growing use of destructive post-war industrial agricultural methods that were poisoning the land and water, reducing biodiversity, and removing billions of tonnes of soil from previously fertile landscapes. A design approach called ‘permaculture’ was the result and was first made public with the publication of Permaculture One in 1978. (article originally published at www.knowledgerush.com) More on this can be found at www.knowledgerush.com/kr/encyclopedia/PermaculturePermaculture Blue Mountains is an active and vibrant association who will contribute a monthly column to lift the awareness of permaculture and how you can be involved on a personal level. More permaculture information is at http://www.permaculturebluemountains.netWelcome to the first column, from Pat of Permaculture Blue Mountains...

What is Permaculture? It is more than mulched garden beds. Permaculture is a design system for a sustainable habitat. The word is derived from ‘permanent’ and ‘agriculture’ but more recently ‘culture’.Many people start in permaculture by applying the design principles to their gardens. We see this with Josh Byrne on the ABC’s Gardening Australia program. But you don’t need a garden, permaculture design principles can be applied to a terrace with a small concrete backyard or to broad acres. So how permaculture is applied varies from person to person. Permaculture practitioner, Ian Lillington says “For many people it is about how they meet their needs from local sources and contribute no waste to the environment.”For me a grandmother living on a double block in Blackheath, it is applying the ethical and design principles to my house, and garden, the way I collect and use energy and renewable resources like water and wood. This column will look at how anyone can get started and apply design principles to their particular situation and lifestyle. Next month... Where to start?

TIME TO RETIRE?

Have you ever thought about your retirement?

Contemplating retirement can be daunting. How much money will I have, how much can I spend and how long does it need to last?

A Financial Planner can help you work out how much money you may have at retirement. We can project what that may be in the future and we can account for different spend-ing levels to see how long it may last. We can also place different portfolio returns in the projection to see what level of volatility you are happy with for your investment.

One important aspect in planning for retirement is the where do I place my money now to give me the greatest tax benefit, centrelink out-comes and returns. For example do I put my money into superannua-tion, a pension account or a straight bank deposit. Each of these in-vestments has advantages and disadvantages.

Whether you are contemplating re-tirement or interested in discussing your current financial situation call Mondy Walpole Financial Services – we can help.

Uniqueness the Theme at Market

The Community Markets at Blackheath Public School are a quaint and slightly alternative place to spend the first Sunday of the month. All stalls are unique, whether the stall holder has home baked, hand woven, hand built, hand painted, picked, collected or photographed & framed their product. “You won’t likely see it on any other stall because it is one of a kind,” said market officer Marina. If you feel like something to eat, she added, “there is great coffee from local boys 2FD who roast their own beans, and the P&C’s bbq is a hit with bacon and egg rolls and grilled haloumi and mushrooms with local rocket. They sold out twice last market!”If you grow your own produce and have some left over, bring it to the co op produce stall, which has other eco features such as a recycling station and biodegradeable coffee and tea cups, which are designed to be planted with seedlings inside after use. Local musical entertainment is becoming a feature. Trio “Bernie and John and Richard” play an underlying, mellow sound, and at the last market, local choir “Eco pella” did an impromptu gig whilst returning home. “Hopefully more choirs will follow suit,” Marina added.

Playback Theatre in Katoomba!

It began in 1975 in New York, It has since circled the globe and is alive and well in Katoomba. It’s exciting, It involves a small yet skilled cast, a musician, an MC and ….NO SCRIPT! …it’s Playback Theatre....“Playback“ is improvised theatre, it thrives on audience participation although not all audience members are required to participate and some may chose to just watch... The MC prods the audience for a great story which the cast then use as the source of the performance,” says Anne, a Playback regular. Along with Theatresports, Playback shares the characteristic of being an improvised form of theatre; however this is where the similarities stop. “Playback is more in line with an improvised play rather than a series of games” continues Anne, “When the MC extracts a story from the audience; the result is instant creative collaboration between performers and the audience. It can be quiet fascinating how the evening can unravel”Aside from the show having a varied and different theme each month, shows have a large scope for quality entertainment due to the fact that the audience and the actors are often very different and the content is totally improvised. It is also important to note that due to the improvised nature of the shows, it may not be suitable for children. The troop currently has 9 members and always welcomes people to visit rehearsals and performances. To visit rehearsals call the Artistic Director, Sarah on 4782 7660.Public shows are held on the first Thursday of the month in St Hildas Hall in Katoomba St, Katoomba – tickets at the door. More information can be found at www.bluemountainsplayback.com.au

Community Garden? The Community Garden at Harold Hodgson reserve is not one but many gardens; an aboriginal garden, flower garden, soup garden, dappled heritage apple walk, the medieval garden, labyrinth and performance space as well as a dedicated childrens’ play area. A protected swamp, creek and bush areas undergoing regeneration complete the picture in this much loved public space. In 1993 the first brambles were cleared, and the first trees planted. All year round volunteers and partner organisations work together to keep these delightful gardens open to the public, and on 1st May the gardens will host Permaculture Day, an open celebration of everything permaculture.Events on the day are wide and varied and include walking tours, a community exchange of goods and services and a composting Q&A and more... Entry by $5 donation.Below: A big pumpkin from the community garden!

In From The FringeBlue Fringe Arts commenced in 1992 as the Adrienne Brown Awards, named after a young local artist who struggled with schizophrenia. They will be holding their annual Literature Event and Awards Evening on May 17th, at the Wentworth Falls School of Arts, 217-219 Great Western Highway, Wentworth Falls between 6.30pm and 9pm, commencing with a light supper.
