thagain Andrea for coordinating it all. On the 16 Russ Nichols, Mary Jane Hatch & I represented our Lodge at the Elk on the Trail Ceremony out at Whitcom Summit in Florida, MA. It was an honor to place a wreath at the statue that honors all Members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country! We had our
thfirst (finally!) Father's Day Ceremony and breakfast on the 17 , great job by the kitchen crew and the officers! We have a bunch of new members, who were initiated on the 26th, wELKcome to the Lodge and great job on the ritual, officers!
thOur last Elks Night Out of the Summer was on the 29 and was well attended. As you all know construction is still going on for HVAC and the roof, please remember to not to park behind the building until the construction is complete.
As you are reading this, I am on my way to the Grand Lodge Convention in San Antonio, TX. I am looking forward to celebrating the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks 150th Anniversary, learning a lot and meeting other Elks from throughout the country.

Members All,Happy Independence Day!! June was such a busy month! Myself along with some other officers attended the MA State Elks Convention in Hyannis and witnessed our new State President Steve Santosuosso & his Officers be installed for the fraternal year 2018-2018; including our own Steve Hardy as State Historian ….Congrats
Roof & HVAC Construction has begun.For the safety of ourMembers and the construction crew,
parking behind the building is blocked offuntil this work is complete.We apologize for any inconvenience!
Summer is upon us and things are slowing down at the Club! This gives us a great opportunity to make improvements to the Lodge. Some of the projects include replacing the roof of the building & updating our air conditioning units.
Please join me in welcoming our new members who were Initiated on June 26th. This is a great start to increasing our membership! We are always looking to have new members join our Lodge, please give an application to anyone you know who may be interested.
Thank you to all the members who have paid this year's dues! If you haven't paid, please pay them right away so you can take advantage of your membership privileges which include coming to the Club and enjoying the air conditioning in the Summer months and socializing with other members.
I am looking forward to attending the National Convention in San Antonio and celebrating the Elks150th Anniversary. This is sure to be an experience & celebration to remember!

On June 14th the Maynard Elks held our Flag Day ritual downtown Maynard at Memorial Park. We had a great turn out of members, officers, and the community. I would like to thank Town Administrator Becky Mosca for all her help organizing this event, DPW employee Mark Currier for the setup and breakdown, Meredith Cormier for singing, Kate Hogan, Chris DiSilva,Ed Sokolowski for bringing all our flags to get formally retired, Maynard Boy Scouts, Maynard Girl Scouts, Maynard Emblem Club, and all our members and officers for attending. Lastly, personally I would like to thank Moe and Sue Ryan for all their help rehearsing my reading part. This event would not be possible without all of you. Maynard Elks had a car care class for members of the Maynard Girl Scouts on May 17th at Willey’s Auto in Maynard! The girls learned how to check the fluids, check oil, how to jump start a car, and how to change a tire! Each girl got an emergency car kit. This was part of our 150th anniversary grant!! Thank you everyone who participated!

Back in the Day....by Paul McClellanWith the passing of longtime members like Ralph Cantino and John Columbo much of the history of the Maynard Elks has disappeared and not passed on. I would like to start having monthly blurbs in the newsletter about stories or memories of members in the Elks and especially about the Maynard Elks “back in the day”. This I hope will pass on the legacy of the Maynard Elks to the newer members. Feel free to send your thoughts or memories to [email protected]. My memory may not always be correct so feel free to correct me or contribute to help record the history.
I started writing this and planned on keeping it somewhat short and I kept adding llittle side notes and memories. When I joined the Elks 40 years ago the home was down the street at 24 Powdermill Road. I did not know the home on Main St. you would have to ask Paul Barilone. It was interesting to me to talk and mainly listen to the elder members, at the time, about their time in the Elks. When you came in the front door the function hall was to the right on the top floor and you had to go down the stairs to the Members Lounge. There was a “hump” in the floor that woman were not allowed to cross (women were not allowed to join the Elks at that time). When we had special occasions and the woman were “permitted” to cross the “hump” that was an honor for the woman and the women were so excited. The bar was on the right-hand side of the room and had about 10 bar stools. At the time we had a special“ A Knick and a Kick for a Buck” that was a can of Knickabaucher Beer and a shot of Old Tompson Whisky for a dollar. The bar was later relocated across the room and enlarged, the “hump” stayed and then a door was dug out and the cement foundation broken open for a fire exit and a set of stairs installed to lead up to the street. This was all done by the members. We purchased the building we are in now in December 1984 and moved in January 1985 (I think the dates are correct). The building was Uncle Pete Carbones then Alphonses Powdermill. When we purchased the building we also owned the building by the kitchen and the property across the street where the house is now. Many members as well as many members of the Emblem Club spent many hours day and night cleaning the building. The upstairs was gutted the stairs leading down to the night club were removed leaving the two function halls as they are now. There were thousands of hours of donated time and labor to get the building where it could be used. I do not like to name people because if you forget someone they may get offended but members like Ralph Cantino, Floyd Barbetti, John Frigiletti, Ben Bigusiak, Bill Poudrier, Skip Pekham, Paul Murphy, Fran Maki and many more worked after their regular jobs to well into the evening.
There used to be wagon wheel lights hanging from the ceiling which were removed, the dancefloor installed, the flexible wall installed and ceilings redone during another renovation. The downstairs bar used to be by the members door and moved to where it is now. Windows were added to lighten up the room, new rugs installed, new bathrooms built and the offices were built.

Famous Elks
Although the original Elks were actors and entertainers, members of other professions soon joined the organization. Today’s Elks represent just about the full spectrum of occupations in America. Presidents Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman John F. Kennedy and Gerald Ford were Elks (JFK was Exalted Ruler of the Boston Lodge #10). Members of Congresswere also Elks; Tip O’Neill, Carl Albert, John McCormick and Sam Rayburn all belong to the fraternity.
70,000 Elks served in World War 1 and 1,000 gave their lies in the service of their country. 100,000 Elks served in the Second World War and over 1,600 made the supreme sacrifice for American freedom. Lawrence Welk, Will Rogers, Jack Benney and Andy Devine were brothers, too. Clint Eastwood is an Elk. William F. Cody, better known as “Buffalo Bill” was also a brother Elk. From the sports world, the Order has counted among its members the likes of Vince Lombardi, Casey Stengel, Mickey Mantle, Whitney Ford and Jim Finks.
