Ellen Andrews 4-H Youth

Development Educator

Dear Green County 4-H Families,

This is truly an unprecedented time for our state. The impact the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is having on our lives is tremendous, and we know everyone is feeling the effects. At Extension, we wanted to share some insight specifically into how we are approaching our in-person events to comply with state and local regulations as well as to ensure the health and wellness of our communities.

As of now, all Extension and 4-H in-person events are postponed until June 1. Additionally, large events (those expecting more than 50 attendees) are postponed until July 1. It is possible that both of these dates will need to be extended in the coming weeks. In some instances, many decisions will need to be made on a case-by-case basis. Not only is health a major concern, but we also have to factor logistics into our discussions. If you are planning a 4-H meeting or event for June, or have questions about participating in an event as a 4-H member in June, I would encourage you to reach out to myself ([email protected]) or the Extension Office.

Continuing to provide a connection between youth and meaningful, fun learning opportunities is still a driving priority for Extension during the pandemic. We have moved meetings and trainings to online formats, and are engaging with participants in new ways. (See new Learning Resources information throughout the newsletter.)

At this point no one can predict when the “safer at home” order will be lifted, when restaurants will resume operations, or when large gatherings will be permitted. Like everyone else, we are eager to get back to normal business. We are excited to bring our participants back together in person, and we hope it’s soon. We will continue to monitor the virus situation and work with local and state leaders on safety precautions and guidelines for resuming in-person events.

We understand many families have questions about whether or not there will be a County Fair or State Fair this summer. Please understand that these are not Extension events, but rather events that 4-H families participate in. Therefore, decisions about whether these events can proceed and with what modifications, will come from their individual governing board and not Extension or 4-H.

As always, please feel free to ask questions!

Sincerely, Ellen Andrews

Youth & Adult Opportunities

Tips for coping with the COVID-19 emergency Extension Specialists and Educators have created a one-stop website with simple, action-oriented and accurate

information on a range of topics to assist you, families, farms and businesses during this time. Whether you are looking for information on parenting a teen grieving with the loss of school activities, financial resources to help get through COVID-19, or understanding the impacts of COVID-19 on the cattle markets, we encourage you to check out: https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/covid19/. You are also welcome to call our local county Extension Office, and we will be happy to help you find the information you need.

4-H Learning Resources We continue to look for resources to support your 4-H Learning needs, and want to make sure you are aware of these ongoing and new opportunities. 4-H e-Learning Opportunities website - This site offers a

wide variety of learning resources, from a Cloth Face Covering activity guide, to Hands-on Challenge Activity videos, to Virtual Farm tours. This site is at: https://green.extension.wisc.edu/2020/03/25/4-h-e-learning-opportunities-you-can-do-at-home/.

4-H Project websites - Many of our project websites now offer links to online project meetings, "how-to" videos. and free curriculum. You can find the list of our countywide 4-H Project websites at: https://green.extension.wisc.edu/4-h-youth-development/4-h-projects/.

4-H Curriculum Library - Our Extension Office continues to maintain a library of curriculum, with resources available in most 4-H Projects that we offer. If you are interested in knowing what curriculum is available in a specific project or checking out specific curriculum for 2-4 weeks , please contact the Extension Office, and arrangements can be made for a safe pick-up process.

Green County Food Pantries Green County 4-H members have had a long history of "using their hands for larger service" by volunteering and gathering donations for food pantries in our area. At this time the Foods Committee would like to remind everyone of the many food pantries located in Green County. Perhaps your family has "paid it forward" and donated to a food pantry in the past. But, with recent events, maybe your own pantry needs a little boost. Or, maybe you have cleaned your pantry and have some items you can donate. Either way, please keep our area food pantries in mind to make use of their services or donate to as needed by your family. Feel free to share this information with friends, co-workers and families that could benefit!

211 Wisconsin is a free service that helps families find food pantries in their area, among other helpful resources. You can access 211 either online or by phone. The website is https://211wisconsin.communityos.org/. If you would prefer to talk to someone, please call either 211, or call 877-947-2211 to speak with a specialist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This means that our Green & Columbia County 4-H Summer Camp at Upham Woods, August 12-15, 2020 has been cancelled. However, we really love camp and believe in the value of the camp experience. Therefore, our team of 4-H Camp Adult & Youth Staff are still working hard to hopefully offer a 1 or 2 day 4-H Camp in mid-August at a local State or County Park. If you are a parent of a 4-H member in 3rd-6th grade, we would love feedback from you to gauge interest and help us plan a great experience. Family, Home & Health 4-H Cloth Face Coverings Activity Plan

During times of disease outbreak, preventing the accidental spread of a virus protects everyone. Youth can help to prevent the spread by sewing cloth face coverings. Using this service learning activity plan, youth can get involved in this important project: https://4h.extension.wisc.edu/cloth-face-coverings/.

Earth Stories Exchange The birds chirp, the river flows, and the earth is bursting with stories about the unfolding Spring! In this time of isolation, Upham Woods Naturalists want to encourage youth and adults to take time to listen to the rhythm of the Earth a little more closely and share the stories, songs, poems, pictures etc. that are inspired from those explorations.

The Earth Stories Exchange is designed to promote observation of the natural world and synthesizing those observations creatively in narrative or poem or whatever

other format you want to share! You can then email, mail, or submit stories through a form to our team and we’ll write you back with our own story! You can submit multiple – as many as you want!

Dairy Dairy Day Cattle Show Cancelled The Green County Ag Chest made the decision to cancel the Dairy Day Cattle Show for this year due to concerns about Covid-19. We hope to see you at next year’s show!

Dairy Managerial Rules The Green County Fair Managerial and Animal Registration rules will remain the same. The policy for the Green County Fair, for Ownership vs. Managerial requirements for the dairy project, are as follows.

Ownership: Ownership of animals is defined when the animal is registered in the name of the junior exhibitor ONLY! Co-ownership is allowed between immediate junior family members (i.e. brother, sister; no parents or farm name) and breed associations. All registration certificates must be in the possession of the exhibitor.

Managerial: Classified as a registered animal carried continuously as a calf. Only calves and yearlings can be shown managerial, and each exhibitor is allowed to show up to two managerial animals. Registration papers with parents as co-owners and/or farm names are considered managerial projects. Contact the Extension office for more information at 608-328-9440.

Dairy Judging Update The regional 4-H Dairy Judging events (Area Animal Science Days) in June have been cancelled and will not be rescheduled for 2020. As of now, the State 4-H Dairy Judging contest is still planned for July 13, 2020 in Marshfield, as part of the state Ayrshire and Guernsey shows. The state 4-H office is working on plans to make the State 4-H Dairy Judging contest more of an open 4-H contest, where teams from across the state can participate without needing to qualify at a regional contest.

All Green County 4-H Dairy Judging practices through June 1 are cancelled. Since we are hopeful there will still be a state Dairy Judging Contest, the Green County 4-H Dairy Judging program is planning on having Dairy Judging practices on June 3 (Kadence Farm) and June 10 (Voegeli Farm). Our Dairy Judging coaches may also be in touch with other farms on the schedule, trying to reschedule a few practices for later in June and July.

Dairy Judging coaches for 2020 are: Tess Zettle (608) 214-8207; and Mike Marean (608) 862-2699. If you have any questions or concerns about Dairy Judging opportunities, please feel free to contact our lead 4-H Dairy Judging Coach, Mike Marean, at 608-862-2699 or [email protected].

Beef 2020 Steer Performance Class

The Green County Beef Producers will again be hosting a Steer Performance Class at the 2020 Green County Fair. Performance Class steers will no longer be harvested during fair. They will be scanned for carcass merits, and performance steers will be allowed to also exhibit in the Beef Market Show on Friday with the exception of the Grand and Reserve Overall Performance Steers which will be sold live in the auction. All steers must be halter broken and have a daily gain of 2 pounds or more to participate in the Performance Class. All performance steers will also be scanned for back fat, loin eye and marbling at the fair this year when they are weighed in. The live performance steer show will still be held at 6:00 PM on Tue. evening, July 14.

Retention of “Show Rights” For the Auction Steer or Lamb exhibitors can retain show rights for WI State Fair by declaring their intent to the auction committee prior to the auction. Exhibitors must also provide a private written contract, signed by the exhibitor’s parents and the buyer, to the auction clerks before the conclusion of the auction. The contract must state the exhibitor and parents agree to the following: to accept responsibility for any liability or claims caused by the steer, to provide proper care of the animal, to guarantee a minimum re-sale price to the buyer, to only exhibit the steer at the WI State Fair, and to have their auction check held until they confirm delivery of the animal to the buyer. Blank contracts can be obtained from the Extension Office and must be turned into the Auction Committee no later than 4PM on the date of the auction.

Class G – Alternate Beef An alternate Beef animal will ONLY be shown to replace a Beef animal in any of the Dept 2 classes that is unable to be shown. The Alternate Beef Entry will be placed in the proper class for showing.

Max Weight Rule for Auction Animals Beef Market animals must weigh a minimum of 1,000 and a maximum of 1,450 pounds at the final weigh-in to sell in the auction. Beef animals weighing more than 1,450 pounds may be withdrawn from the auction OR sold through the auction as a 1,450 pound animal. Dairy steers must weigh a minimum of 1,300 and a maximum of 1,650 pounds at the final weigh-in to sell in the auction. Dairy steers weighing more than 1,650 pounds may be withdrawn from the auction OR sold through the auction as a 1,650 pound animal.

Beef Bedding Rules All Green County Beef Exhibitors will be charged $12/head bedding fee for all beef animals entered at the 2020 Green County Fair. This fee is to help defray the cost of the bark bedding that is provided by the Green County Beef Producers. The bedding fee will be collected by the Green County Beef Producers at the 2020 Green County Fair.

Swine Swine Carcass Class Carcass pigs will be scanned and that data along with the live placing will determine the overall Champion and Reserve Champion Carcass Pigs, both of which will sell in the Meat Animal Auction. The Champion Market Gilt and Champion Market Barrow will show against each other to select a Supreme Champion and Reserve Supreme Champion Pig. These two pigs will also be sold in the auction. Only barrows can be entered in the carcass class.

Swine Show Reminders The 2020 Swine Show will start at 7:00 AM and will be a terminal show. This means that ALL swine brought the Green County Fair will be shipped directly to market and will not be allowed to return home to eliminate the possibility of disease transmission. Gilts, Market Barrows and Carcass Barrows will all be able to sell in the 2020 Meat Animal Auction. Pigs need to weigh a minimum of 235 pounds to sell.

Preparing Swine to Share Pens at Fair Due to the popularity of the Swine Department, there are many more exhibitors than there are pens available at the county fair. This means that exhibitors’ pigs WILL have to share pens at the county fair. For the health and safety of the pigs, and to limit pigs fighting at the fair, swine exhibitors are reminded to co-house pigs prior to county fair. If multiple pigs are coming from the same farm to the fair, whether from within a family or within a club, these pigs should be housed together, in order to get used to each other. 2020 Swine Health Rules Swine from within Wisconsin need a Wisconsin intrastate movement certificate: Stating that the herd of origin was inspected by a Veterinarian on the farm within 30 days before the show and showed no signs of disease. Swine From Outside Wisconsin need a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection: Stating that the herd has been inspected by Veterinarian within 30 days of the show and showed no signs of disease, along with a statement of the PRRS and SECD status of the herd of origin from which the pig was purchased.

2020 Sheep Carcass Class Carcass lambs will be scanned and that data along with the live placing will determine the overall Champion and Reserve Champion Carcass Lamb, both of which will sell in the Meat Animal Auction. Carcass lambs will be allowed to exhibit in the lamb market show on Friday with the exception of the Overall Grand and Reserve Carcass Champion Lambs.

Poultry Project Learning Looking for some great resources to support your Poultry Project learning? Poultry Testing Requirements Waived The law requiring pullorum testing for “persons who use poultry or farm-raised game birds or their eggs for breeding or hatching or for the exhibition at a fair or livestock exhibition" was waived as of April 2019, and the waiver remains. This means that...(1) we will not be scheduling pullorum testing dates, and (2) we do not anticipate needing to collect documentation of Flock Status at the 2020 County Fair.

Turkeys MUST Still be Tested for MG The pullorum waiver does not change the requirement that turkeys must still either be (1) individually tested for Mycoplasma gallisepticum within the preceding 90 days, or (2) originate from a flock that tested negative for Mycoplasma gallisepticum during the calendar year. Testing for purposes of the fair shall be completed before the birds arrive at the fair. If you have questions about this requirement, please contact Melissa Leonard-Flannery – (608) 558-7037, [email protected] or Karen Buck - (608)558-9746, [email protected].

Attention Single Rabbit Roaster Exhibitors Please be aware that as a prospective Meat Auction Exhibitor, a consumer will potentially buy and feed their family with the animal that you are raising. It critical that you be conscious of your responsibility to raise a rabbit that will be a high quality, safe and wholesome meat product. This includes selecting a rabbit that will be under 6 months of age at the time of Auction, is free from chemical residues and was raised in a humane manner.

It is also a Green County Fair Rule that all animal projects (including Rabbit Roasters) must be in the exhibitor’s possession by May 1. Noting that it is unethical and even illegal to sell rabbits under 2 months of age, it is important that you plan ahead, and make sure that you are buying rabbits that have been born by March 1, so that you can take possession before the May 1 deadline.

The Single Roaster lots at the fair are NOT meant to be pet rabbits or an opportunity to make a quick buck, but rather are designed to be an educational opportunity to develop life skills while learning about the meat rabbit industry.

Online Fair Entries Green County Fair information, including the online fairbook, can be found at the Green County Fair Website: http://www.greencountyfair.net. In 2020, each club will receive one printed copy of the Fairbook. Online fair entries will be accepted from approx. May 1 through Tuesday, May 26 at 4:30 PM. Please call the Extension office at 328-9440 with any questions or concerns while entering. Due to character limits, the entry descriptions in the Fair Entry program are often incomplete and do not specify requirements. Therefore, it is important that you read the entry descriptions in the actual Junior Fair book, and NOT just in the Online Fair Entry program. Families are also strongly discouraged from using a cell phone to submit online fair entries, as this seems to increase submission errors.

Online Entries - Projects vs. Departments The County Fair is bigger than just 4-H, so our 4-H project names do not always match perfectly with Junior Fair Departments and Classes. We’ve included a chart on page 16 of this newsletter to help you find the Department that you are looking for, based on your 4-H projects. Please use this chart when completing your online entries.

Cake Decorating at the Fair! Any 4-H youth interested in decorating a cake for the 4-H Cake Decorating Auction is encouraged to come to the Youth in Action Building on Sunday of the Fair, July 19. We’ll be decorating cakes at 10:30 AM in the Youth in Action Building and auctioning them off at 11:00 AM in the Entertainment Tent. This opportunity will be limited to 12 youth or pairs. Pre-registration is required by calling the Extension at 328-9440 by Monday, July 13.

Green County Fair Ticket Prices Adult Daily Admission - $10 Adult Season Pass - $35 Daily Child Admission - $5 Child Season Pass - $10 Auto Daily Admission - $5 Auto Season Pass - $15 All of the grandstand shows will be free after entrance fee is paid, with the exception of the pit passes for the tractor pull and demolition derby.
