THE DIRTY DOZEN: 12 NASTY FIGHTING TECHNIQUES

FOR ANY SELF-DEFENSE SITUATION (86 PAGES $12.57)

BY Larry Jordan

This text is an example of good things coming in small packages. The brief six chapters cover the basic concepts and techniques of real-life self-defense. This is not a book on the martial arts, even though the author has had many years’ experience in several systems, but rather a brief treatise on the most effective techniques and tactics on street combat. Chapters include: The threat, the winning mind, natural weapons, vital targets, the dirty dozen, and scenarios, which illustrate how to perform the techniques in actual defense situations.

These methods were taken originally from the author’s military experience as a hand-to-hand combat instructor in the U.S. Army Special Forces. The techniques taught do not require years to master like most martial arts, but can be learned fairly quickly by following the training procedures outlined in this small manual. There are no wasted motions or fancy techniques in this text. Everything is straight forward and brutally effective. Keep in mind that like any self-defense text, you must actually practice to become efficient in any of these physical techniques.

In conclusion, this is a manual for anyone interested in a simple and effective self-defense system that can be learned in a short period of time.

THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR: The Dark Secrets of the

Samurai Code Published by Citadel Kensington $10.00

By Jotaro

As a lifetime student of the martial arts and a free-lance writer, I have had the opportunity to have read and reviewed numerous books on the warrior philosophy. This 207 page text ranks up with the classics such as “The Book of Five Rings, Bushido: The Soul of Japan and the Art of War.” In fact, this book has most of the same lessons taught in the previous classics mentioned above.

This fantastic book is organized into five parts with a total of 60 short chapters or sections. Part one covers the foundation, which includes an introduction of basic warrior principles. The second part deals with the range of learning the martial ways. Part three explains the importance of understanding strategy. Part four emphasizes the factors that deal with harmony in the way of the warrior. The final section explains the void as it relates to living as a warrior. There is also a concise and very helpful glossary of important martial art and warrior terms.

In conclusion, this is a book not just for those involved in the martial arts, but for anyone who is interested in and desires to live by the principles of the warrior philosophy. This includes those in the military, law enforcement, and teachers of the warrior way. In my opinion, the principles in this book can serve as a basic guide to anyone who is a warrior or strives to become one.

GLOCK: THE RISE OF AMERICA’S GUN

Crown Publishers: 279 pages

BY PAUL M. BARRETT

As a long time admitted lover of all kinds of weapons, especially guns, I found this book very interesting and easy to read. I finished the 279 page text in one evening of focused reading. Even though I have owned and fired numerous rifles and handguns, I had only fired a Glock one time on the range where one of my fellow officers carried the Glock. At that time, as range instructor for my agency, I thought the Glock was the ugliest gun I had ever seen. However, the officers that carried them seemed to praise the Glock. After reading this book, I better understand why this gun became so popular with many law enforcement officers and police firearm instructors. This book does not paint a very attractive portrait of the creator of the gun. Gaston Glock, who it seems, was able to make friends with both socialistic politicians in Austria and democratic governments in the United States, did not seem to really like Americans, but was a smart and ruthless businessman. As it turns out, he and his contacts became very wealthy selling his Glock in the United States. The twenty chapters detail the history of the Glock and the individuals who promoted this Austrian made firearm in the United States. The first chapter begins with The F.B.I. shoot out in Miami in April of 1986. Pointing out how they were outgunned in a tragic shoot out. The rest of the book details how Gaston Glock first approached officials in the Austrian Army about creating a better gun than the Walther P-38. Styr. How the gun was designed and the various people who helped promote the gun are also covered in this text. This volume outlines the many obstacles that had to be overcome to finally get acceptance of the Glock with American police officers and the American military. In conclusion, this book will be of great interest to anyone who is into firearms. This includes the military and law enforcement community. Several well-known firearm experts are mentioned in this book such as Emanuel Kapelsohn and Massad Ayoob, who gave their own views concerning the Glock. Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. THE PRINCIPLES OF UNARMED COMBAT

Published by Turtle Press 351 Pages $29.95

By Mark Jacobs

First off, I want to emphasize that this is the most detailed book I have ever read on the specific principles and factors which make up unarmed combat. It is also not a book you would want to read for recreation and pleasure. This is not a criticism of the book. This text was written like a college level text book. It has ten sections and over 50 chapters, as well as 351 pages in its 11 by 81/2 size format. In fact, it is impossible to intellectually absorb the amount of detail given in each section without studying this book with the same intensity you would give in a college physiology and kinesiology course. Though many life time students of the martial arts may be familiar with many of the concepts and principles, this book makes you think even more deeply on any preconceived ideas you may have on physical combat. The ten sections in this tome include: The basic principles, body posture, movement and footwork, striking, defending against strikes, transitions, takedowns, ground fighting, miscellaneous topics and the psychology of combat. The illustrations are clear drawings showing the principles of a technique; however, in my opinion there should have been even more illustrations for this size text. However, this is the only real criticism I have of this amazing book. If you truly desire to understand all the complex factors involved in unarmed combat, you will want to make this book part of your martial art and self-defense library. There is a store house of knowledge contained on the pages of this excellent book. In conclusion, if you are a serious and dedicated student of any type of physical combat you will want to study, and not just read this book. Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. SPECIAL OPS FITNESS TRAINING Ulysses Press 134 pages $15.95

By Mark De Lisle

I have always had a passion for fitness books, especially military fitness manuals. What I really like about this one is it has specific routines taken from all the special operation services such as Navy SEALS, Delta Force, Marine Force Recon and Army Rangers. This text is organized into three sections. Section one provides an overview of the material being covered such as striving for peak performance, history of special operations, special Ops training and mental attitude. Part two explains how to use this book, the importance of stretching and exercise routines of the Air Force Para-rescue, Army Ranger, Green Beret, Marine Force Recon, and Navy SEALs. It also has an alternate workout program using weights.

The final part of this manual shows the specifics of every single exercise in this program. It shows with clear photographs how to do the jumping jacks, Iron Mikes, Chest Stretch, Side to side stretch, Groin stretch, Quad stretch, various types of Pull-Ups, different ways to do the Push-Ups, the Eight-Count Body Builders, Crunches, Flutter kick and numerous other movements that are part of the Special Ops exercise routines.

Besides the illustrated exercises there are endurance type routines that are unique to the particular branch of service. For example, the Army Rangers are known for their long walks carrying equipment. The Navy SEALS and Marine Force Recon are known for their long swims.

In conclusion, as the author advises, begin slowly and work up to the actual Special Ops exercise routines explained in the book. This book will be of interest to anyone who is into combat fitness programs. Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Haiku Moments: How to read, write and enjoy Haiku)
