With the last improvements in production, and on-line accelerationof radioactive beams, exotic beams are now available forexperimentation. We can extend our knowledge to areas away from nuclear stability.
Energies ~ 0.1-10 MeV/nIntensities ~ 103 ppp
Cross sections ~ 10-3 barn

MAYA, A GASEOUS ACTIVE TARGET. LAYOUT
MAYA is essentially an ionization chamber where the filling gas plays also the role of the target :

The pressure can be set up to 3 atm of H2, D2, C4H10, etc…With 1 atm of C4H10 we have ~1022 atoms of H/cm2.

MAYA is essentially an ionization chamber where the filling gas plays also the role of the target :

the beam may crosses monitoring detectors before Maya, as drift chambers
the projectile makes reaction with an atom of the gas, while the particles ionize the medium
the electrons drift down to the proportional wires, where the signal is amplified
the drift time is measured in each wire t1

if the ionizing particles leave enough energy, an individual charge is induced in each pad, creating a projected image
of the trajectories

eventually, scattered
particles leave the gas volume.
They are stopped and
identified in the Si-Csi wall

MAYA, A GASEOUS ACTIVE TARGET. GENERAL ANALISYS
with the charge profile along the trajectories:
the vertex comes from
the crossing point
we extract the end of the trajectory.
the projected range is
calculated.
the trajectories are fitted with the positions of the maxima of charge deposited, corrected with a CoG. We calculate the projected θ angle.
beam
scattered
recoil
with the drift times up to each wire we determine the reaction plane angle Φ, and so the correction for the projected ranges and θ angles.
Φ
we have the θ angles, and for those particles stopping inside, their range, and so their energy.

MAYA, A GASEOUS ACTIVE TARGET. INTRO
