APRIL CABANILLACHAZZMAN HANDY

Dear Students,

April brings about the infamous Spring break! I know everyone is excited to have time o! from school, but it’s important you don’t take a break from learning. Plan you fun days hanging out with your friends and family but also make sure that you "nd time in your hectic schedule to read a new book.

With spring break comes lots of parties and events. I caution all of you to say no to drugs. Spring break is known to be a time when teens may use an illegal drug or drink alcohol for the "rst time. #ere will be a lot of temptations, but it’s important to stay strong and avoid the dangers that accompany drugs and alcohol. One way to stay strong and avoid all of the peer pressure is to attend parties with friends who can stand up with you and say no. Staying safe and keeping cell phones fully charged is important when attending any party.

#ere are so many great things that you can plan for spring break that doesn’t require a lot of money. Make a trip to the beach, go for a hike in the park and bring a picnic, go laser tagging, skateboarding down the boardwalk at the beach, plan a sporting tournament with your friends like basketball or soccer, or plan a fun movie night and invite everyone over to watch an old favorite movie. #ere are a lot of ways to have fun during your spring break that doesn’t require a lot of money and will keep you safe from all the temptations.

Hey Students,

February is the month of Love, but more importantly, it’s Black History Month. African American’s have contributed or invented numerous things that we use on a daily basis. From the super soaker, to spark plugs for a car, to a coin changer. The list goes on and on.

Throughout this month of February, let us keep in mind the role of Black History in our nation’s narrative. And as the calendar turns to March, our homes, schools, churches, and town halls need to execute the vision of our forefathers, and make

when curiosity crosses the line

10 SIGNSyou might be a facebook

STALKERWHETHER IT’S AN EX, A POTENTIAL CRUSH, THE CRUSH OF AN EX, AN ENEMY OR EVEN A FRENEMY, MOST ARE GUILTY OF AT SOME POINT STALKING SOMEBODY’S PROFILE (THOUGH MOST WILL NEV-ER EVER ADMIT TO DOING THIS AND WILL DENY IT TO THE DEATH). ITS LIKE MAYBE TODAY WILL BE THE DAY YOU SCAN HIS FACEBOOK PROFILE AND FIND OUT HE’S CHANGED HIS PROFILE TO SINGLE AFTER FINALLY BRAKING UP WITH THAT GIRLFRIEND YOU’VE BEEN SECRETLY HATING FOR YEARS. RIGHT? (FINGERS CROSSED). BUT WHEN DOES CURIOUS CROSS THE LINE? 10 TIPS TO TELL YOU MAY HAVE GONE OVER THE EDGE AND TURNED INTO A FACEBOOK STALKER

10 YOU’VE MEMORIZED WHAT TIMES A PERSON USUALLY LOGS ON OR OFF

9 IF SOMEONE QUITS FACEBOOK, YOU PANIC AND BELIEVE THEY BLOCKED YOU

8 YOU’RE 40 PICTURES DEEP IN SOMEONE’S PROFILE WHO’S NOT YOUR ACTUAL FRIEND

7 YOU START TO KNOW DETAILS OF PAR-TIES AND EVENTS, NOT BECAUSE YOU WERE THERE BUT BECAUSE YOU SAW THE PICTURES, READ EVERY COMMENT AND CHECKED OUT THE PROFILES OF EVERY TAGGED PERSON. (NONE OF WHOM YOU KNOW IN REAL LIFE)

6 YOU’VE FRIENDED THE PERSON’S FRIENDS AND REACHED OUT TO GET INFORMATION ABOUT THE PERSON OR START STALKING THE PERSON THROUGH THEIR FRIENDS

5 YOU DISSECT EVERY POST ON THEIR WALL (“JUST A GOODNIGHT POST *WINK” WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??!?)

4 YOU HAVE TO PRETEND YOU DON’T AL-READY KNOW EXACTLY HOW AND WHAT SOMEONE HAS BEEN DOING.

3 YOU’VE STARTED MAKING REAL LIFE AP-PEARANCES AT THE PERSON’S MOST FRE-QUENT CHECK-INS

2 YOU CHECK HIS/HER RELATIONSHIP STA-TUS AS OR MORE FREQUENTLY THAN YOU CHECK YOUR EMAIL

1 YOU CREATED A FAKE PROFILE, FALSE IDENTITY OR PRETENDED TO BE SOMEONE ELSE TO GET INFORMATION OR SECRETLY FRIEND SOMEONE

It was everyone’s worst nightmare. My ex broke up with me in the worst way possi-ble … by defriending me on Facebook and then proceeding to make it worse by an-nouncing to the fb universe that he was “in

a relationship” with someone else. I was upset; I was horrified; and more importantly I HAD to know EVERYTHING that was happening. I im-mediately logged on to my friend’s account to find out what had happened and of course who this girl was. I immediately saw uploaded pics of the two of them, I found out where she went to school, when they had become fb friends in the first place and even that apparently he had given her a bear for birthday (the nerve!).

Three tear-stained weeks later I still couldn’t let it go. Of course he told me we could still be friends, and we’d still text each other all the time, but that didn’t mean he removed the block from my account. Really all I wanted to know was what was going on with HER. I needed to ob-sess over pictures of him and desperately scan his status updates for any sign that he missed me (even a little). I needed to know what was so wonderful about this girl that he was willing to break my heart for, in front of EVERYBODY.

Some people would consider what I did next stalking, I prefer to call it “research” and as far as I was concerned, when it came to my ex and his new girlfriend I was better at research than Veronica Mars. I started by logging in through the accounts of mutual friends. But after the first few days, I was worried that constantly asking them to borrow their laptops would start to look lame and pathetic. Besides, I couldn’t get full access to HER profile that way anyway and as I was already a dumped loser I didn’t need to also be known as a psycho stalker. No I need to be stealth; to secretly and silently friend this girl and get the inside scoop. Enter the fake profile. Yes I did it. The ultimate stalkerazzi move, I made a fake profile and added HER as a friend. After that I have to admit I was obsessed. I checked her page at least ten times a day. Fortunately for me she posted a lot and was totally into Foursquare, so within a week I knew where they’d gone together, where she hung out with her friends and even how many of my so called friends still posted on his page (traitors). It wasn’t until I had logged in my fake profile as the main one on my phone app, that I realized I might have an issue. Not that that stopped me or anything. I was curi-ous, but as we all know curiosity killed the cat

HOW TO STOP FB STALKING YOUR EX

DELETE YOUR EX FROM YOUR FRIENDS LIST. Think they may contact you? Block them. Go to their page (one last time), click the little arrow next to the messages button and click report/block. They will not be notified that you blocked him/her, but it will stop you from being able to follow their updates and stop them from post-ing on your page. While you’re at it untag and get rid of the pics too. It may seem mean, but really you’re better off if you’re not getting up-dates on where they are, what they are doing and especially whom they’re doing it with. Out of sight might not be totally out of mind, but it’s a start. You’re not being mean, but right now YOU are the most im-portant person in your life.

TELL ANYBODY THAT WILL LISTEN. Not literally, but definitely tell your core group that you’re trying to stay away from the ex and why. Fear of embarrass-ment can be a powerful motivator to stop doing something.

CALL A FRIEND. Every time you think about calling your ex, or checking his/her profile, call a

friend instead. Beforehand make sure they’ve promised to under ab-solutely no circumstances allow or encourage you to hit up your ex.

DON’T TRUST YOURSELF. If you’re considering stalking an ex, sooner or later you’re likely to slip up. Make getting to that pro-file as hard on yourself as possible. Absolutely delete any fake profiles you’ve created. If you have the code to your ex’s accounts, tell them to change it (or have one of your friends tell him/her). The key is to reduce the probability of slip ups by making it as inconvenient as pos-sible to look.

Do Something. The brain can only focus on so much at a time. So if you’re in danger of sitting around stalking your ex’s life, then the best thing to do is go out and live your own. Have a ready list of activities to engage in anytime you feel the urge check in on that person. Get off the computer altogether. Go out somewhere with friends (unless its somewhere you think that ex may be, or know they might be because you saw them check in on Four-square).

You already know you shouldn’t be stalking your ex, but denying the urge to peak at his page or show up at the same mall you know he’s going to be at may at times seem irresistible and more than a little difficult to squelch. You figure, just a little peek to see, just once … no twice. You’ll feel better if you just know right? Not likely. Chances are looking will only make matters worse and keep you involved in the situation when what you really need (and even want) is out. But it’s so easy. Just a little click here and the right password there and voila! Information, pictures, answers! So how do you stop? We asked licensed marriage and family therapist L.Parker her advise on how to break the habit.

I started by logging in through the accounts of mutual friends. But after the first few days, I was worried that constantly asking them to borrow

their laptops would start to look lame and

pathetic.

and likewise the picture of them kissing nearly destroyed me. But what destroyed my fake profile was my ex’s text to me … “Hey. Whut was the spot u wanted 2 go 2 wit me? I want to take _____ there.” Ouch

In that moment I realized the horrible truth of being “friends” with an ex … sometimes they actually treat you like a friend. In the weeks I’d been facebook stalking my ex and his new gf I had been secretly hoping we’d somehow get back together. I had taken his occasional “miss u” and “wish u were here” texts as a sign that he knew he’d made a mistake and was coming back; but all the time I was also secretly suffering. The last text cut like a knife and I finally coughed up my secret in group. I asked my group leader what she thought.

“It’s very hard to let go of something that you’re still thinking a lot about and spending a lot of time on.” Ms. Parker (MFT) told me. “Keeping in touch with an ex can make it even harder to move on and meet someone new. Unless you want to live their life instead of your own I don’t think it’s a great idea to spy on an ex.”

She’s pretty smart, and deep down I knew she was right. I de-cided not to talk to my ex anymore but I don’t care what anyone says, it’s way harder than it looks. It took me a while, quite a few fails and the support of a friend to help me out when I was tempted, but I finally made it through.

#1 BOARD OF IMAGINATION

Incredible SK8Board Decks Bring Tech to

“LOOK, MA: NO HANDS!” The Board

of Imagination is a real life mind

controlled skateboard . It integrates

a neuroheadset from a company

calledEmotiv, with a Samsung tablet

running Windows 8, which is in turn

connected to the skateboard’s mo-

tor. The headset translates thought

into electrical circuitry that’s routed

through the tablet, into the motor,

and powers the board. The board is

operated solely on the power of your

imagination, no controller here. To

throw yourself down the road (or up

the hill) at up to 32 MPH now, you

simply imagine yourself moving to

the spot you desire and the headset

picks up your brainwaves, massages

#2 ALL TERRAIN BOARDThe Rockboard Descender removes all boundaries from your skateboarding experience. This all-‐terrain board is outfitted with heavy rollers on tough-‐as-‐nails treads that grip just about any downhill surface you choose to attempt: pavement, grass, wooded paths, snowy hills, and more. No need to wait for a sunny day or a smooth sidewalk.

www.rockboard.com

#4 Skateboard BikePart bike, part skateboard and part scooter, the sbyke has a fixed, 20-‐inch front bicycle wheel and two skateboard wheels in back that are on a pivoting truck, allowing you to lean into turns like you would on a skateboard. There’s also an adjustable spring rate on the steering system, so that riders can optimize it for cruising or carving, and a hand brake for stopping.

#5 The Electric DeckThe ZBoard is the world’s first weight-‐sensing electric skate-‐board. Simply lean forward to go and lean back to stop. Each foot pad senses how much force you apply and analyzes this informa-‐tion with an onboard computer linked to an electric motor.

wwwzboardshop.com

#3 Concrete CarvingAny serious boarder knows it’s impossible to “carve” the streets the way a snowboarder carves snow and a surfer carves water. Here to save the day is the concrete carving Aris Sport Bladerunner. This all new skateboard design features conical wheels that gives skate-‐boarders advanced snowboarding or surfing motion simulation. The curved wheels allow the deck to dip more deeply into turns beyond the constraints of normal truck and wheel designs giving riders a feeling like no other. They have created two deck styles equipped with the new wheels and trucks, decks modeled after a snowboards, and surf-‐boards. Let the revolution begin. .

#6 The Eco DeckComet Skateboards does more than build the average deck for tricks and turns. Built out of envi-‐ronmentally safe materials, these boards reduce a buyer’s carbon footprint with every purchase. Comet considers what happens to a product at the end of its life and what happens to all byproducts of the manufacturing process. Comet uses materials that can safely biodegrade at the end their use.

#7The Racked DeckGot a bike and want to carry a board? The Fairdale Skaterack is the perfect solution. Simply mount this pannier on to most existing rear carrier racks and throw your board on for the ride. A cushioned rubber coating keeps your board from rattling around and holds your board securely. The rack positions the board behind the rear axle to keep your heels from hitting it, and keeps the center of gravity low.

CH: Tell me how you fell into music, did you know this is something you wanted to do? DS: It was always something I knew I wanted to do and in late 2008-early 2009 was when I really started writing my raps. At the time I didn’t want to be a famous rapper or anything, I didn’t really want people to know I was even rapping. So I would be in my room just writing a lot because I had a lot I wanted to express through it. I saw that I really loved it and I wanted to do what I loved. Then I took it into my own hands and that’s when I made my own mixtape and no one knew my dad didn’t know, I just wanted to showcase myself and it to speak for itself.

CH: Lets talk about the album getting into detail like who did you work with, what’s the sound? DS: I work with really dope people like the Interns, D mile he did most of the pro-duction, Happy perez. Had a lot of producers and as far as features I had Jadakiss, Jeremih, and Tank. Those are the three people that are on the album.

CH: what are your top 3 favorite tracks on the album?DS: Top 3 is really hard because I love them all because I made them all. Three tracks that I love at the moment because it always different I would say are, four letter word, Special occasion, two up.

CH: So do you feel like you have a lot of pressure on you coming from such a talented family?DS: I don’t feel any pressure, because I took it into my own hands, because I felt like my own individual and of course I still do. This is my real passion and I wasn’t trying to follow in my father’s footsteps or anything like that. I’m just trying to reach my own goals and milestones and do what I want to do. Not try to be under

the legacy or keep it going, even if that’s what it is. It’s really about me as an artist.

CH: So you have been doing the “Life of a Jetsetter Tour” how has that been?DS: I finished it in February and that was super crazy. My first headlining tour and selling out all the venues which is really crazy so it was really dope.

CH: What do you think you have learned stepping out on your own, do you think you changed from the old Diggy? DS: The old Diggy was just the the younger Diggy on the show so its not like the Diggy on runs house and the Diggy now. Runs house was not my occupation or anything, it was just something that was presented to my family and I was on it because I am apart of the family and now I am doing what I love. So there is no real difference just that I’ve grown up and when you grow up you go through dif-ferent things and that’s the reason why I do music. It comes from a honest place and that’s why I do music.

CH: What do you like to do when you are not working on your music?DS: I’m 17 so I like to do normal stuff like bowling and basketball chilling with my boys and shopping.

CH: What about the ladies?DS: I like chilling with the ladies too. But I’m single now

CH: What is your absolute favorite food?DS: Im young so I can eat what I want… but I am trying to slow down but I love burgers.

THAT THEIR LINEAGE BECOMES AN AFTERTHOUGHT? ANSWER: DANIEL “DIGGY” SIMMONS MEETS HIS DESTINY AS

THE CHAMPION OF RAP’S NEW MILLENNIUM GENERATION. A BOY GENIUS WITH THE PEN, THE 16-YEAR-OLD SON OF

HIP-HOP ROYALTY JOSEPH “REVEREND RUN” SIMMONS AND NEPHEW OF RUSSELL SIMMONS, HAS ALREADY WRIT-

TEN HIMSELF A TWO-YEAR CAREER THAT’S SURPASSED MUCH OF HIS ROOKIE CLASS.

THIS YOUNG SUPERSTAR’S STORY BEGAN SEVEN YEARS AGO IN THE LIMELIGHT OF HIS LEGENDARY RELATIVES,

CO-STARRING ON HIS FAMILY’S HIT REALITY TV SHOW “RUN’S HOUSE.” ONCE DIGGY UPLOADED A JAW-DROPPING

FREESTYLE AND ACCOMPANYING VIDEO (DIRECTED BY PHIL THE GOD) OVER NAS’ “MADE YOU LOOK” INSTRUMEN-

TAL IN 2009 (“FLOW STOOPID”), HIS FAMILY TREE QUICKLY BECAME A MERE BACKDROP. THEN CAME HIS THREE

STELLAR MIXTAPES––2009’S THE FIRST FLIGHT (OVER 100,000 DOWNLOADS), 2010’S AIRBORNE (IT’S “GREAT

I’m just trying to reach my own goals and milestones and do what I want to do. Not try to be under the legacy or keep it going, even if that’s what it is.

CH: What was it like working with Eva Mendes?CR: It was great; she’s such a beautiful person in-side & out. I learned so much from her in the filming process

CH: What do you admire most about your character in the film?CR: I admired the fact that Ansiedad was so deter-mined, and no matter what or who she hurt in the process of her growing up, it was all to gain her mother’s love & affection.

CH: How do you relate to your character? How are you different?CR: I can relate to Ansiedad in the sense that I too, as a human, yearn to love & be loved in return. Thank-fully, I’ve never had to go to the extreme to get it though. She’s very rebellious & that’s something I definitely am not.

CH: What do you think is the most important mes-sage kids should take from the film?CR: I would definitely stress to enjoy growing up as much as you can, and to never get in to something you’re not ready for. It’s easy to be pressured, but you have to stay true to yourself.

CH: What are some obstacles that you deal with as a young teenager?CR: Definitely the pressure of growing up. Getting older means more responsibilities & it’s hard at a young age to learn all of those, especially while try-ing to succeed at school too.

CH: How old were you when you started acting?CR: I was 10 years old when I started acting; I got into it through singing. I fell in love with it, and have been doing it ever since!

CH: What do you like to do outside of acting?CR: I love to shop. I’m a total girly girl. You can catch me on the weekends with my friends shopping down Melrose or at a flea market. I do love my personal time though, so when I’m not out with friends, I like to stay in and spend time with my family.

CH: Do you play any sports?

CR: Oh no, I’m not athletic at all. I’ve tried getting in to sports, and it’s not for me. I can’t even do a cart wheel.

CH: Who do you admire most? Who are your heroes? and why?CR: I admire my parents. Both of them have sacri-ficed so much for me to live my dream & have put unconditional support in to me. I’m very grateful for them.

CH: The character in the movie is the only child. Do you have any siblings?CR: I have one sister, Savannah. She’s 15 & we’re 18 months apart. People say we look like twins and sometimes when strangers ask if we are, we tell them we’re 18 minutes apart. I’m super close to her, she’s one of my best friends.

CH: What type of music do you listen to?CR: The type of music I listen to depends on my type of mood. I couldn’t decide on which genre I love most because I literally l love it all. I have the most diverse music on my iPod.

CH: What is your all time favorite movie?CR: I love classic movies. Any Johnny Depp movie or anything made by John Hughes. I’m really in to Dazed & Confused right now.

CH: What actors would you want to work with in the future?CR: I would love to work with Angelina Jolie. I admire her career so much. I love the roles she takes on & the fact that she always gives back. I think that’s important.

CH: What is a day in the life of Cierra?CR: It depends on the day, I’m usually working on the set of The Secret Life of The American Teenager, I wouldn’t consider it work though, it’s what I love to do. If it’s on the weekends, that’s where you can catch me hanging out with friends, if I’m not sleeping in until 3 in the afternoon!

CH: What is your favorite subject in school?CR: My favorite subject is English. I love to write. It’s

always been a dream of mine to become an execu-tive producer/writer.

CH: Did you have any hurdles in school or in your household that were hard to overcome?CR: Definitely, and I think It’s the type of hurdles any teen can relate to. School can get really stressful at times & it’s something I struggle with at times.

CH: Do you think most teens are forced to grow up too fast, like your character in the movie? What advice would you give a teenager that is going through a similar situation?CR: I do feel that teens are forced to grow up, in one way or another. Which is why I think Ansiedad is so relatable. Often, in our society, especially with bullying being a huge issue, teens are manipulated into doing things they know are wrong, but do it any-ways in the hopes of gaining friends. I would advise to never lose that judgment. If some-one’s pressuring to do something you’re not ready to, or you know is wrong, don’t do it. Stay true to yourself.

CH: If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be?CR: Definitely Greece. I think it’s so beautiful. I would love to have my dream wedding there!

CH: If you were deserted on a desert island and could only have 3 items what would they be?CR: My iPod with every song ever made, unlimited burgers from In N Out. I could eat In & Out for break-fast lunch & dinner & never get tired of it. Last but not least a boat.

n the crazy, silly, wonderful world of dancing, each of us can be placed into one of the following categories: loves to dance, hates to dance, only dances when dared, and just “leans back” (which apparently qualifies as a dance too). Two (possibly three) of those crews either have tried one of the many dance moves on this list or,

at the very least, know about their existence. The thing is we don’t think we all dance enough. Look around. Chances are you’ll notice people looking foolish, doing these danc-es (some can be pretty awkward) and maybe you think you’d be embarrassed to do it too. But we say the crazier the dance the harder you should go … maybe even break it down in unusual places like the grocery store (who knows you just might boost the shopping experience) or better yet teach them to your mom (and of course tape it for youtube or blackmail later) Either way moving always feel good, even while you’re feeling silly.

@chanceknowitallHooray for May! The month of May brings lots of sun, pretty prom dresses, Cinco De Mayo and most of all Mothers Day.

Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. In Los Angeles where I live everyone celebrates Cinco de Mayo, we have parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns. So if you have never celebrated May 5th. Go out and have a good time, you won’t be disappoin-ted.

Mother’s day is celebrated all over the world. It’s a day to honor your mom and let her know how much you love her. Whether she does silly things in public to embarrass you, or gets on your nerves about cleaning your room or doing your homework, you love her and want to let her know. If you’re a kid like me you really don’t have the cash to buy something nice because you spent it all on junk food. But here are some good ways to show your mom you care on Mother’s day without spending any money. 1. Do the dishes or help clean up the house 2. Make her a big breakfast or a simple dinner 3. Make her a card and write her a per-sonal poem. No matter what you do for your mom remember to treat her like every day is Mother’s day.

YOUR THOUGHTS ... SHOULD ALL AMERICAN STUDENTS LEARN MANDARIN?China’s economy is growing at a fast pace. Two years ago they surpassed Japan to become the world’s second largest economy and last year they became the world’s top producer of manufactured goods. While whether or not that is sustainable, or will con-tinue is somewhat under debate, what seems to not be under debate is that not everyone in the business world speaks English and Chinese is rising in importance from an economic point of view, possibly beyond languages such as French or Spanish. American’s talk about how foreign workers are able to gain jobs in America and how call

centers and other work is able to be exported to other countries. But these things are only possible because other countries make learning English from grade school onward a priority. And lets be honest, the 2 or 3 years of high school foreign language most students get is not going to cut it to make someone job ready for a global market. Some schools have taken on the challenge, with more than 200 schools across California offering a dual-language immersion program in which students learn in two languages with the goal of becoming academical-ly proficient in both. During these “50-

50” programs teachers who use dif-ferent languages in the classroom and those whose instruction is in English are paired, and students spend half their day with each. But some wonder if its enough. The education minister of Sweden has made Mandarin a man-datory language in all schools to keep Swedish students competitive on a world stage. Which begs the question, should all American schools do the same? Will the American workforce remain competitive in a global market if a multilingual approach isn’t a prior-ity for all students? What do you think?

WOULD BIOLOGY CLASS BE MORE INTER-ESTING IF IT WAS HELD IN THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS? WOULD YOUR MANDARIN BE BETTER IF YOU LEARNED IT AT THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA? HOW ABOUT IF YOUR NEXT ASSIGNMENT WAS TO LITERALLY GET LOST IN GERMANY? ALL OF THIS MIGHT BE A NORMAL DAY AT SCHOOL … IF YOU GO TO THE RIGHT ONE. There has been a lot of talk about the global economy and the internet has made us all global citizens. But one very special high school takes the concept of global citizenship to a whole new level. Think Global School, the world’s first traveling board-ing school, offers teens an opportunity to go beyond traditional “study abroad” programs and gain a real inter-national experience. TGS students, who themselves represent 15 different coun-tries, immerse themselves in 12 world cit-ies over 12 trimesters; visiting historical, cultural and scientific sites.

BOTH TEA AND OPIUM have been produced in Thailand’s northern Chiang Rai province for thousands of years, just as elephants have been a constant. But instead of learn-ing this information from cracking open a book, or googling Thailand, TGS students know from going there. In Mae Salong, the area’s largest producer of tea, students walked through tea plantations before taste testing several different types of tea, got trunk length away from a elephants, stopped with a hill tribe to learn historical methods of trapping and hunting, as well as trying their hands at a loom to make a

pair of wool socks. Global Studies teacher Andrew McLean sent the students on a scavenger hunt around Berlin, Germany where they were asked to visit points of interest like famous synagogues and the Pergam-on museum. Students were encouraged to discover new locations and have personal experiences with their new host city. Equipped with their

i P h o n e s , they docu-m e n t e d each unique adventures to share with their peers and reflect af-terward.

S w i t z e r -land’s Inter-

national Baccalaureate Organization has also granted THINK Global School its full authorization as an International Baccalau-reate (IB) World School. The IB authorization will allow the school to offer the IB Diploma Programme which is held in high esteem by Universities in over 140 countries. All of the IB courses will be integrated into the broad-er THINK Global School curriculum, which emphasizes multicultural literacy, critical thinking, and global citizenship.

What kind of students attend TGS? All kinds. TGS seeks students with academic strengths and intellectual curiosity, a desire to experience new cultures, and a willing-ness to engage in a tight-knit school com-

munity … on a global scale.

embarrassing skin questionsANSWERED

We all have them, and we all

hide them: weird skin issues

that you’re too embarrassed to

show your friends and too shy

to ask your dermatologist about. But chances

are, your friends are dealing with similar stuff,

and your doc’s seen it all before (and then

some). Until you’re confident enough to bare it

all, however, perhaps we can shed a little light on

those unsightly (but very common) skin condi-

tions. Here are five embarrassing skin questions

answered:

I Got a Pimple, Should I Pop It?It’s tempting, but popping or squeezing a pimple

won’t necessarily get rid of the problem. Squeez-

ing can actually push bacteria and pus deeper

into the skin, which can cause more swelling and

redness. Squeezing also can lead to scabs and

might leave you with permanent pits or scars.

Because popping isn’t the way to go, patience is

the key. Your pimple will disappear on its own,

and by leaving it alone you’re less likely to be

left with any reminders that it was there. To dry a

pimple up faster, apply 5% benzoyl peroxide gel

or cream once or twice a day. You can buy this

over the counter at your local drugstore.

If you’re concerned about acne, talk to your doc-

tor or a dermatologist.

DO YOU THINK YOU ALREADY KNOW ALL THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT ACNE? YOU MAY BE SURPRISED THAT SOME OF THE THINGS YOU’VE HEARD ABOUT ACNE — LIKE WHAT CAUSES IT AND HOW TO DEAL WITH IT — AREN’T ACTUALLY TRUE. KEEP READING TO FIND OUT

SOME FAST FACTS.

MYTH #1: TANNING CLEARS UP SKIN.FACT: ALTHOUGH A TAN MAY TEMPORARILY MASK ACNE, THE SUN CAN MAKE THE SKIN DRY AND IRRITATED, LEADING TO MORE BREAKOUTS IN THE FUTURE. IN FACT, THERE’S NO LINK BETWEEN SUN EXPOSURE AND ACNE PREVENTION, BUT THE SUN’S RAYS CAN CAUSE PREMATURE AGING AND SKIN CANCER. ALWAYS PROTECT YOUR SKIN BY CHOOSING A SUNSCREEN OF AT LEAST SPF (SUN PROTECTION FACTOR) 15 THAT SAYS NONCOMEDOGENIC OR NON-

ACNEGENIC ON THE LABEL, WHICH MEANS IT WON’T CLOG PORES.

MYTH #2: THE MORE YOU WASH YOUR FACE, THE FEWER BREAKOUTS YOU’LL HAVE.FACT: ALTHOUGH WASHING YOUR FACE HELPS TO REMOVE DIRT AND OIL FROM YOUR PORES, WASHING TOO MUCH CAN LEAD TO DRYNESS AND IRRITATION, CAUSING MORE BREAKOUTS. ALSO, AVOID SCRUBBING YOUR FACE, WHICH CAN IRRITATE THE SKIN. AS A GENERAL RULE, WASH YOUR FACE TWICE A DAY WITH MILD SOAP AND WATER IN A CIRCULAR MOTION AND GENTLY PAT DRY WHEN

YOU’RE DONE.

MYTH #3: POPPING PIMPLES WILL HELP THEM GO AWAY FASTER.Fact: Popping a pimple may make it seem less noticeable tempo-rarily, but popping can cause it to stay around longer. By squeezing pimples and zits, you can actually push bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil further into the skin, causing more swelling and redness — and sometimes causing a red or brown mark or scar to form. Sometimes marks can last for many months and true scars (dents and pits) will last forever.

MYTH #4: DON’T WEAR MAKEUP IF YOU WANT CLEAR SKIN.Fact: As long as you choose cosmetics that are nonacnegenic or noncomedogenic, they shouldn’t cause breakouts. In fact, some con-cealers now contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which help to

fight ACNE.

MYTH #5: IF YOU KEEP GETTING BREAK-OUTS, IT HELPS TO USE MORE ACNE MEDICATION UNTIL THE BREAKOUTS STOP.FACT: BECAUSE ACNE MEDICATION CONTAINS DRYING AGENTS LIKE BENZOYL PEROXIDE AND SALICYLIC ACID, USING TOO MUCH MEDICATION MAY CAUSE OVERDRYING, LEADING TO IRRITATION AND MORE BLEMISHES. REVIEWED BY: PATRICE HYDE, MD

Q: I sweat buckets (even when everyone else seems to be cool and comfortable). I’m tired of ruining my favorite shirts with pit stains. What can I do?A: Excessive sweating can be a vicious cycle. You find yourself in an awkward social situation, so you begin to sweat, then you get nervous that everyone is noticing, so you start sweating even more. It can be a debilitating problem for some people. But before you consider more extreme measures — such as Bo-tox injections under your arms which can keep your skin dry for up to six months — first make sure that you’re using an antiperspirant (which keeps you dry), and not just a deodorant (which keeps you smell-ing fresh). For extra protection, switch to a stronger formula, like Dove Clinical Protection Antiperspirant and Deodorant. But let’s be honest, sometimes no amount of antiperspirant is going to keep you dry, and according to WebMD, excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a condition that affects millions of Americans. And while it’s not medically dangerous, hyperhidrosis can seriously interfere with your life. Fortunately, there are a few treatments available. For at-home remedies, try bathing twice daily with soap and water, but don’t scrub your skin too much, be-cause that can irritate it, putting on an antiperspirant at night before bed, and attaching pads (underarm or dress shields) to the armpit area of clothing to absorb sweat. You can buy these pads in sports or clothing stores. If it’s more serious than that, ask your dermatologist about prescription antiperspirant and certain medications that can prevent the stimu-lation of sweat glands.

Q: Almost every time I shave, I end up with a bumpy rash — what I am doing wrong?A: Ouch! Razor burn is no fun. Razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, are small, irritated bumps on the skin that develop after shaving when strands of hair curl back on themselves and grow into the skin, according to WebMD. Razor bumps cause irritation and the development of pimples, and may also cause scarring. Other than stopping shaving en-tirely and using hair removal products (depilatories), which could also potentially irritate the skin, there are a few things you can do to prevent razor burn. Take a hot shower before shaving to soften the hair and open the pores; use a thick shaving gel; don’t stretch the skin when shaving and always shave in the direction your hair growth; use the fewest ra-zor strokes possible; rinse with cold water; and use a fragrance-free moisturizer after shaving. To treat razor bumps, Lawrence Moy, M.D., chief of derma-tology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, says to first put down your loofah — dermatologists now agree that rubbing the bumps to free the hairs trapped in-side will make the problem worse. So instead of that, apply an over-the-counter acetylsalicylic acid (a.k.a. aspirin) solution twice a day for a week to exfoliate the top layer of skin. After the top layer is shed, the backed up hair should be able to poke through.

Q: I’ve got butt acne. What is the cause and how do I get rid of it?A: Breakouts on your butt can be caused by sev-eral things, including clogged pores, sweat bumps

(miliaria), plugged hair follicles (keratosis pilaris), and friction from your clothing. You can keep your booty bump-free by employing a clear skin regi-men similar to that for your face. That means gently exfoliating the affected areas with a loofah or acne cleansing sponge, showering as quickly as possible after perspiring heavily, wearing loose-fitting cloth-ing when working out so sweat and bacteria doesn’t get trapped in undesired places, and not picking at the pimples, which could cause them to become in-fected. If the bumps are rough, a buildup of dead skin cells could be to blame, so some doctors rec-ommend using scrubs and lotions with lactic or sali-cylic acid. If that doesn’t get to the bottom of it (sorry, we couldn’t resist), your dermatologist may prescribe medicated wipes. All you have to do is ask.

Q: The stretch marks on my upper thighs and hips are so embarrassing. Is there any way to get rid of them?A: Rapid weight loss or gain can leave stretch marks on your body, but so can hormonal changes that oc-cur during normal growth spurts. Red marks appear when your skin stretches and thins so much that you can see your blood flowing through the skin’s thinned outer layers, says Joseph L. Jorizzo, M.D. When your skin stretches minimally or the stretched skin is thick, white marks are often left behind. Stretch marks affect as many as 90 percent of all women, according to Leslie Baumann, M.D., direc-tor of the University of Miami Cosmetic Group and author of The Skin Type Solution. To prevent them, she recommends moisturizing three or four times a day with products that contain cocoa butter or shea butter as a primary ingredient, and massaging the moisturizer deep into the hips and thighs. Getting rid of stretch marks is tricky, unfortunately, but you can do something to minimize their appearance. The degree of success with any treatment will be impacted by your age, your skin tone, and even your diet, Baumann says. Treatments include prescription methods, such as tretinoin cream or laser therapy, and over-the-counter stretch mark treatments you can buy at your local drugstore, but are not particu-larly effective. Your best bet is to use sunless tanning products, which will help mask your stretch marks.

Q: I’ve got cellulite on my legs. Does this mean I’m overweight?A: Nope. Cellulite is not about being skinny or fat, says Ranella Hirsch, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Boston University Medical Center. It’s a mix of things, including hormonal and genetic factors, diet, and stress levels. So yes, ladies, even supermodels have cellulite. In fact, Meredith Baraf, makeup artist for Victoria’s Secret models recom-mends a little self-tanner to make your skin appear less dimpled. “Smooth on a gradual formula, hitting lumpy spots first, so they get the greatest dose of cream and a slightly deeper tan,” she says. Once that layer dries, apply a tanning spray evenly to intensify the color. Other than covering it up, however, there’s not much you can do to get rid of cellulite. For a tem-porary fix, Hirsch recommends using a cream that contains caffeine. Though you should only expect the effects of these creams to last for a few hours.

I still remember my parents even though the last time I saw them seems like an eternity ago. They never wanted me, and never let me forget it. My dad dipped out early. Left the state first to sell

drugs, then ended up in the state’s custody when he got caught. My mom hung on until she got a boyfriend who didn’t like kids, then she dipped too. I remember the last day I saw her she, dropped me off at my grandma’s house and told me she’d just be gone for the weekend … but she never came back. I was nine. I know she’d call every now and then because I’d hear her arguing with my grandma, but she’d never ask to speak to me; never acted like she missed me and four years later still hadn’t come back. My grandma tried to love me the best she could, but she was old and sick and when she died of a stroke four years later I was totally on my own. I watched my family argue over money, over the house, over who got what and over who would have to take me because no one wanted to.

I bounced from one relative to another. Because I had to keep changing schools I didn’t have any friends anymore and I started to figure that since I was going to be leaving the school anyway, why even bother doing the work? I got in trouble a lot, so then whoever I was living with would get tired of me pretty quick and kick me out. After that I started to hate everybody so I ran away, but it didn’t really matter because it was like no one cared, and no one came looking for me. I remember that I used to pray and try to make deals with god … if I could just get someone to love me I’d go to school … if I could just have a place to stay I’d stop getting in trouble…if I could just have some else’s life I’d do anything … but I guess god doesn’t work quite like that because time went on and still no one came for me.

I would go to school just enough to not get kicked

out … I was failing, but during winter it was warm there and I could usually get lunches the other kids would throw away. But I used to feel bad when I’d hear kids complain about how much of a pain their parents were. Even the strictest parents had to be better than none at all. All I could think was, if only you knew …

I met a street kid named Roger who turned me on to this abandoned house he shared with about a dozen other kids. We all kept each other company and tried to watch each other’s backs. It was the closest thing to a family I’d had in a long time so even when they wanted to steal from stores and sell the stuff for money, I was down to do it. I guess the world is a funny place, or maybe it was god finally answering my prayer in an odd way; but one day my crew was about to break into a warehouse that happened to be behind a shopping center. I was kind of lagging behind, I don’t know why, but I see a car pull into the lot and I follow it. I watch a woman who looked like my mom get out, then unstrap and pull out a toddler behind her. I was stuck watching her attach the kid to the basket, hugging and kissing her laughing face the whole time. It was like taking a bullet. I stood there stunned for what felt like forever, then I did something I hadn’t done in years, I cried big baby crocodile tears.

Roger and the crew got caught that night. It should have been me, but it wasn’t, and for the first time in my entire life I felt like I had caught a break, and that maybe that meant something. I couldn’t go back to the house so I went to this shelter a man from a program had told me about. I stayed in the program, got a GED and a job and after a lot of work even got into community college. I want to study social work or teaching so I can help kids like me who don’t have anybody to be able to make it.

“NO PLACE TO CALL HOME”Excerpt from MASKS Stage Play

Written by: Terryl Daluz and Mann Alfonso

Do you know how it feels to live in a world with

no place to call home moving from house to

house, got my mind in a zone every time I feel

up, I always get let down, by some adult in my

life because they never stick around. But what

do I do, on who do I rely got a mother who

died when I was five and a father who died but

still alive. This pain inside is cutting through me

like a knife, sometimes I wish I wasn’t born or I

had another life. So I go to sleep to wake up

another day, hoping it was just a dream so I

can wipe my tears away. But no more crying

no more sorrow from these eyes, I got to stay

strong, if I want to survive. In this concrete

jungle, in this game called life, every man for

themselves cause this world is trife. No one to

trust, no one to have my back, so I’m always

on guard, always ready to attack. So now you

know how I feel, hurt and all alone, no one to

show love, no place to call home.

A fellow encountered a bear in a wasteland. There was nobody else there. Both were frightened and ran away. Fellow to the north, bear to the west. Suddenly the fellow stopped, aimed his gun to the south and shot the bear. What color was the bear?

If you don’t know, this may help you: if the bear ran about 3.14 times faster than the fellow (still westwards), the fellow could have shot straight in front of him, however for the booty he would have to go to the south.
