Greetings from the Southland By: Dave Hamann

Hi everyone. Well the last time I was sitting here writ-ing my little blurb for this fine publication, I was lamenting the fact that our Brunch tour was held on a day when we received approx 2” of rain. Yesterday it was 97 degrees here! Ahhh, Spring in Southern Oregon, you have to love it! Our event this month is down to Eureka for an overnight stay and a tour of a couple of the beautifully restored Victorian homes there. Then back home on Hwy 299, one of the best sports car roads in the country. Trevor & Kristi are leading the group on this one. If you need all the info or their contact information, it’s on the website. Next month will be the Poker run and BBQ on the 27th. Again all the info is on the website. I’d like to mention how much we, as Chapter Reps , appreciate your help. For years it was pretty much the Reps who planned and led all the events. It was a lot of work. The past couple of years some of you have really stepped up and taken the lead on many of the tours and done a great job! It not only helps the Reps avoid burnout, but it gives a fresh approach to events when different people plan them. Hope you al have a great Memorial Day week-end and we’ll see you at an event soon.

Dave

Central Chapter By: John Thompson

The Central chapter hasn't had much to report on lately. The weather is still a mixed bag which I am sure has kept many experiencing the outdoors through a layer or two of 1/4" glass. I too have been guilty of this recently. Since my local Porsche family is not always available, I have found a substitue family via the internet. There are quite a few chat rooms, message boards, and other sites for Porsche enthusiasts. For me there are three of particu-lar interest: 912BBS.org, Early911SRegis-try.org, and PelicanParts.com. The benefit of these sites is that they are model specific and the members are very helpful and willing to share their vast experiences. If you've got a 914, there is a site for you, 914world.org. Got a 968? Try 968forums.com. How about a 911 Carrera 3.0. Yep, got you covered over at 911carrera3.co.uk. What I have found most in-teresting is there are people who are frequent visitors to these sights that are from Eugene and yet take no interest in being part of the lo-cal Porsche Club. What is great is that they provide another avenue for Porsche owners to enjoy their vehicles. So next time the weather is putting a damper on your driving enjoyment, pull up a chair at your local computer and pre-pare yourself to take a ride on the information

PCA Tour to Eureka May 30-31, 2009

Meet at the Dutch Bros/McDonalds parking lot in the Allen Creek Shopping Center in Grants Pass on Satur-day 5/30 at 9 am. Leaving GP we’ll take Hwy 199 to the Coast and then Hwy 101 down to Eureka, stopping along the way for a picnic by the sea. Please bring a picnic lunch! When we get to Eureka we’ll be treated to a tour of the Zanone house and it’s neighbor. 2 grand old Victorian homes restored by their present owner Ron, who will be giving us the tour. After the tour we’ll head to our hotel, the Best Western. The hotel offers a free breakfast, so after eating Sunday morning we’ll head back to Arcata and head home on Hwy 299 which is rated one of the best sports car roads in America by several car magazines. Lots of twisty road made for a Porsche! We’ll take Hwy 3 out of Weaverville up through the mountains back to I-5 and home. It prom-ises to be a great time! Any questions? So Chapter -Butte Creek Mill By: John Le Bel

Although there was no Delorean or Flux Capacitor in sight our recent trip to Butte Creek Mill cer-tainly made attendees feel like some serious time travel had occurred! The starting point was present day Medford Barnes & Noble on April 18th at 9:30 am. After a picturesque and circuitous drive through Sam’s Valley we ulti-mately arrived at Butte Creek Mill, and a sight straight out of the late 1800s. The fully func-tional water driven mill has been in operation since it opened in 1872. Bob Russell and his

wife, Debbie, have owned the mill since 2005. Both are antique lovers who moved from their Portland residence to operate the mill and open an antique shop located in an old cheese fac-tory, adjacent to the mill.

The mill is water powered but not by the usual water wheel seen on many old photos. Water is funneled into a 12 foot tunnel which acceler-ates the water to give it sufficient pressure to drive a turbine wheel. The turbine turns a se-ries of shafts and pul-leys via several large belts used to power all the equipment in the

building, including a grain elevator. The real work of grinding the material is done by two 1,400 pound buhr stone grinding wheels quarried in France. They were shipped around the Horn to Crescent City, Cali-fornia and carried over the mountains by wagon. When the mill began operation in 1872 farmers traveled from miles away with wagons filled with grain lining the Old Military Road to Snowy Butte Creek Mill to have their flour ground. The miller was paid for his ser-vices by keeping every seventh bag of flour to sell in the Butte Creek general store. The Klamath Indians trekked 90 miles from Fort Klamath to trade berries and leather goods for flour.

Many thanks to Bill Kohn for organizing this unique and infor-mative event giving us an opportunity to experience a fasci-nating glimpse of century old ingenuity and enterprise.
