For Preparation"Too many Christians worship their work,

work at their play and play at their worship." -Anonymous

Today we begin a new series on Work, a fitting place towards which our attention isturned on Pentecost Sunday.Pentecost, as you will recall from Acts 2, was the coming of the Holy Spirit, in hisfullness, to indwell and empower believers in Jesus Christ to fulfill their calling asKingdom citizens. The Reformers, and especially the Puritans, placed great emphasis on the concept ofvocation, though they were careful to note that one's vocation should be distinguishedfrom one's occupation. For them, vocation, or calling, was that which sat at the center ofthe life of every believer, and that vocation was made up of two parts, namely to "lovethe Lord with all one's heart, mind, soul and strength, and to love one's neighbor asthemselves."Outside of this central vocation they noted that each person has four categories of rolesin which they work out their vocation. Those four categories were: Family, Church,Community, and Occupation. Under each of these four categories there were a myriadof applications available to each person as they were uniquely gifted and called. Here'sa chart that pictures this.

Beginning today and for the next few weeks, we are going to be exploring this concept ofvocation especially as it relates to our occupations, and what we hope to show is thatwork is good, that it matters to God, and that it is necessary within God's kingdom. So quiet your hearts and join us in praying for clarity, wisdom, and increased joy in ouroccupations.

Pastor Chris

Old Testament Reading—Jeremiah 29:4-7

“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom Ihave sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live inthem; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sonsand daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters inmarriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and donot decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you intoexile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will findyour welfare."

New Testament Reading—Acts 2:1-21The Spirit empowers the disciples for mission.

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. Andsuddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and itfilled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fireappeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled withthe Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave themutterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from everynation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and theywere bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his ownlanguage. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all thesewho are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his ownnative language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents ofMesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia andPamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors fromRome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them tellingin our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed andperplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mockingsaid, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, liftedup his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell inJerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For thesepeople are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: “‘And in the last days itshall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sonsand your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, andyour old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and femaleservants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And Iwill show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moonto blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. Andit shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shallbe saved.’"

Leader: The Word of the Lord!

People: Thanks be to God!

Mourning the RebellionWe grieve sin and confess our need of God

Call to Confession—Hebrews 12:1—2Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud ofwitnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clingsso closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is setbefore us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throneof God.

Season of Silent Confession

Celebrating RedemptionWe rejoice in our Savior and hear from his Word

Assurance of Pardon—2 Corinthians 5:17—21Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old haspassed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, whothrough Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry ofreconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world tohimself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrustingto us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we areambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. Weimplore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sakehe made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we mightbecome the righteousness of God.

Passing of the PeaceLeader: People of God, believe this gospel and know that you

are forgiven.People: Thanks be to the Lord!Leader: Now may the peace of Christ be with you all!People: And also with you!

Trinity Institute for Christian GrowthSunday School Today:Does someone in your family struggle with mental illness? Maybe you yourself do?The effects of the Fall are pervasive and have broken every part of creation, including our minds. All too often we forget that our brains are part of our body andbroken just like the rest of it. Worse still, we can mistreat those who suffer with amental illness rather than meeting them with the same grace we have been shown. In light of our ongoing focus on "Who is my neighbor?”, Licensed Counselor JamieMcCall will be teaching a two-week Sunday school series on mental illness. Theclass will draw from Scripture, literature, and anecdotes.

Upcoming Sunday School Class:From May 29-June 12 we will have a class on the topic of Apologetics.
