The Art of Pisanki Eggs David Bryniarski Wednesday, May 1st • 2:00 PM Optima Dining Room

The centuries-old art of pisanki is a wax-resist method of dying Easter eggs, much like batik. The wordcomes from the verb “to write” – as the designs are not painted on but written with 100% pure beeswax.Every Eastern European country has its own version. The painted Eggs are a symbol of spring andrebirth around the world and they have become a symbol of Easter and the Resurrection. In EasternEurope, decorating eggs during the long, cold winters in anticipation of warmer days and the end of Lentbecame an art form. The symbols, colors and styles all differ by country and even by region within acountry. Join David Bryniarski, a parishioner of Rochester's St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, as hedemonstrates the history and art of Pisanki making.

David Bryniarski The art of Pisanki Eggs

David Bryniarski, a parishioner of Rochester's St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, started painting eggs with hismother when he was just 5 or 6 years old. His mother had learned the technique from her mother, whohailed from Poland. In the intervening years he has painted hundreds of eggs, including many that he giveseach year as Easter greetings to friends and family members. The Polish word for the Easter egg is pisanka, which comes from the word pisac, meaning "to write." Andthe intricate designs are literally written on the eggs by Bryniarski with a combination of molten beeswaxand carbon black. The hot wax is applied using a fine writing stylus called a kistka. Bryniarski has helped keep this Old World tradition alive by teaching it to his children and by leadingworkshops coordinated by Rochester's Polish Heritage Society, of which he is a member.
