May is a great month. The Club really comes to life and Memorial Day is just around the corner.

Jim Grady had a busy month. If you noticed, Jim has not been around the Club for the past few weeks. He had a double knee replacement in early April. Jim has completed two weeks of rehabilitation and he will be back soon with a new spring in his step. We wish him well and a speedy recovery.

Jim has kept the staff busy in his absence. The rip rap project and new landscaping around the rear of the Main Clubhouse is completed.

The green film of pollen is disappearing and the grounds are transforming with the spring flowers, lawns and beds coming back to life.

The pool deck and the second floor terrace overlooking the Lafayette River are a great place to relax, read a book and enjoy the spring weather with the views of the grounds, the river and the glowing sunsets.

There are a lot of things happening in the month of May at the NYCC. We have a lot of programs getting into full swing. New

Memorial Day weekend marks the official beginning of our summer season. The pools and snack bar open on Saturday the 25th. The annual Flag Raising on Sunday is on the lawn at 5:00 p.m. followed by a cookout poolside with entertainment by “Coolin’ Out.” There will be games, pony rides and a moonwalk for the children on Sunday.

On Saturday, May 4th members are invited to enjoy the 139th running of the Kentucky Der-by in the Grille. Mint juleps and some light hors d’oeuvres will be available in addition to prizes for the best looking hats.

Tapas Night returns on May 11th and the Beachnuts will be providing the entertainment in the Lafayette Room for the evening.

Mother’s Day is May 12th and the Club will be offering an expanded brunch and dinner buffets in the Deck in addition to our normal breakfast buffet.

The Club’s staff is gearing up for a great sum-mer season. We have an outstanding group of individuals hired for our youth instructional programs. Please drop by the tennis pro shop and introduce yourselves and children to our new Assistant Head Pro Jon Antle. Don’t forget to register your children early for this year’s summer programs.

Happy Mother’s DayJim Grady, CCM

talented employees are on board and ready to teach our children and adult Club members the finer details of sailing, swimming and tennis. Welcome Jon Antle to the tennis program and Matt Elliott and Alicia Huther back to the Sea Dragons.

May is a busy month. Events are scheduled almost every weekend.

We start off with Derby Day, on May 4th in the Grille. Come experience a little bit of Kentucky right here in Norfolk.

My favorite evening is back on May 11th, with the Tapas Night. The menu is a seafood lover’s dream. The Beachnuts will be playing and we have requested a stunning sunset for your enjoyment.

Mother’s Day is May 12th. Make your reservations early for the brunch to celebrate a special day for a special person.

The Friday night racing series is in full swing. There are races and after race socials scheduled for each Friday night during the month. There are boats that are looking for additional crew. Touch base with the Commodore for more information.

The month closes out with the Memorial

Page Turners Turn to Fiction

World War II is about to erupt. A detached band of Marines are marooned in North China. This is the setting for the Page Turners next book discussion. Warning of War; A Novel of the North China Marines, by James Brady. The group meets May 17 at 6 p.m. in the Grille. Published in 2002, Warning of War is the story of how these Marines march through hostile China to join up with their Corps unit and the fight against Japan.

Brady, longtime columnist with the New York Post and Parade magazine, wrote many books on the military. He died in 2009, at age 80.Anyone interested in joining the group should contact Tim Lockhart at [email protected].

Opps. We had a typo in the April issue in the story about Graham Landy. You can learn more about his team and show your support as they prepare for America’s Cup by visiting www.USA45Racing.com.

Day weekend - the official kickoff to the summer season. A festive three day weekend is planned. The pool will open; the annual parade of boats will be in the early afternoon, followed by the traditional Flag Raising. The day will be capped off with a BBQ with all of the fixings - outdoor buffet. Always a fun weekend and a great way to welcome the summer season to the NYCC.

Enjoy the weather and hope to see you around the Club.

Over the last several months, many AOL users have reported that they are no longer receiving their NYCC statements. To correct this, our IT support company recommends that AOL users send an email to [email protected], so that the AOL server will recognize it as a safe sender and not block it as spam. around the ClubBasketball Tourney a Slam Dunk

The inaugural 3-on-3 basketball tournament was a huge success. Everyone had a good time and no was injured.

The Dukes, led by John Vellines (the younger) and John Stine, prevailed over Sam Finney’s Ankle Breakers to win the Club Championship bracket.

The legendary Larchmont Lobsters, who have been playing together “forever,” won the Senior (over 49) division, downing the Com Oak Dogs, led by Captain Ben Mason.

A large crowd turned out to see this amazing display of hoopery (or was it to help drain a keg of cold beer?), held on the tennis hard courts. Fans saw some “incredible” moves. Play was enhanced by the PA commentary of Vince Thomas and Charlie Church.

The tournament is the brainchild of Club member and hoop maven Brain Friedman.

While the Lobsters quartet (teams were allowed one substitute) of Rick Kiefner, Jim Forrester, Bruce Holbrook, all in their 60s, and “young” Bill Ungerman won easily, play in the Club Championship division was fierce, featuring such teams as The Squad, The Screw Tops, Team Jud Buechler (named after a lowly sub on the Michael Jordan-LED Bulls) and Team M3 (cubed).

The M3 team of John Maloney, Jim Mills and Eric Miller had the biggest fan support with many family members sporting neon yellow M3 jerseys.

Judging by the comments from players and spectators, it looks like Friedman’s tournament will be a regular rite of spring at the Club.

nYCC newSMax’s Mom

While Shannon Decker was pregnant with Max, she had a vision of what motherhood was going to be like.

“Since I was going to be a stay-at-home mom, I’d have lots of free time,” she said, laughing. “I’d be able to cook gourmet meals and do other things.”

It hasn’t quite turned out that way since Max arrived March 26, 2009.

It’s been better than that.

“You don’t know how much work is involved until you become a parent,” said Shannon, who S&S salutes as our special Mother’s Day Mom. “But there isn’t anything better or more rewarding.”

Shannon was teaching middle school until a day before giving birth.

“I got a lot of kidding that I was going to give birth right in the class room,” she said. “I might have. But I just wasn’t feeling good that day, so I stayed home.”

Except when Max is on the soccer field, playing with his dad or at NYCC’s child care while Shannon is catching a workout at the Fitness Center, Max and his mom are almost inseparable.

Shannon said most of her child raising philosophy comes from her own mom and watching other mothers she admires.

Shannon was raised in a family of three daughters, “so I didn’t know much about trucks. All I knew was Barbie and Ken dolls and being a Princess. I had a lot to learn.”

Probably the most important thing Shannon has learned as a mother is “being able to put others first.”

She is quick to point out that she gets plenty of help from husband Phillip, owner of two of Norfolk’s most popular breakfast and lunch spots, D’Egg Diner and D’Egg West.

They started dating in their 20s, got engaged 10 years later and married two years after that.

“There is no question being a teacher has helped me as a parent,” said Shannon. “I’ve discovered that raising one child is, in some ways, harder than teaching a roomful of 30 teenagers.”

Her vision for her son is to be “the best version of Max Decker he can be. To be happy, healthy and kind.”

Sometimes at night after they’ve tucked Max in, Shannon asks Phillip, “Did you ever imagine that you could love a person so much?”

NYCC Hosts Oyster Restoration Project

Once again, NYCC is teaming with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in their oyster restoration mission in the Lafayette River.

At press time (mid April), the CBF’s Maryland-based Patricia Campbell was scheduled to home base at the Club April 22-26 while it planted some 300 “reef balls” in the river.

“The Club has been a great supporter over the years,” said Tommy Leggett, Oyster Restoration and Fishery Scientist for CBF.

“The reef balls,’ said Leggett, ‘provide a habitat for oysters to grow. The reef balls have many oysters attached to them, so they will also add to the oyster population in the river.”

The 65-foot long Patricia Campbell is equipped with a special hydraulic crane for planting the reef balls.

Sign Up for Sailing Camp

Junior Sailing Camp hits the water June 24. It’s gonna be a perfect day, we are told. In fact, the whole summer is going to be perfect for sailing. So, now is the time to register for all the fun.

The first two-week session runs through July 5. The second session is July 8-19 and the final session is July 22 to Aug. 2.

Among the highlights are a field trip on the American Rover and possible regattas against other local clubs.

She’s No Guest, She’s the Babysitter

Parents can pick up FREE passes and register their baby sitter at the Front Desk. This pass allows babysitters to bring children to the pool throughout the summer without having to pay the guest fees.

From the pierSFREE Boat Inspections

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer free boat examinations at the Club May 11, beginning at 8 a.m.

This is a great opportunity to make sure your vessel is in compliance with all state and federal safety requirements. If everything is present and in good working order, the USCGA will award a sticker for your boat. If you have a sticker, the Coast Guard often decides not to perform routine on-the-water inspections.

If anything is amiss, boat owners will be informed. There is no report, except to the vessel’s owner. Please contact Shirley Robinson at [email protected] to set up an examination and notify the Coast Guard Auxiliary if additional examiners are necessary. We will attempt to schedule examinations in the order which we receive your request.

You can learn more about the inspection by visiting www.safetyseal.net and clicking on “Use Our Virtual Vessel Examination.”

Another website to check out is www.cgaux.org. Click on “Vessel Safety Checks” for a description of the inspection.

If it seemed like it smelled like old socks burning at the Club one day last March, that’s because they were.

The first annual “Sock Burning” was held March 14. The event is an Annapolis tradition to mark the end of winter and the coming of blessed spring and the boating season.

The custom is explained in “Ode to the Sock Burners” by Jefferson Holland. It’s time to burn those “nasty socks” you’ve been wearing all winter and slip into a pair of old deck shoes sans socks and enjoy being out on the water.

Boaters “Sock” It To Winter

Help Clean the BayThe 25th annual Clean the Bay Day is Saturday, June 1. Over the years, NYCC has joined thousand of other volunteers to pick up trash and debris throughout coastal Virginia to improve our waterways.

It’s also a great way for parents to pass along positive values to children and grandchildren. We will assemble in the rear parking lot by the Dock House at 8:45 a.m. to get folks registered and for a short talk about safety before the clean up begins. Call Bob Hume at 288-9985 for more information or just show up.

Cruising Season Is Here

First cruise is Saturday, May 25, weather permitting. Come by boat, kayak, canoe, paddle board or however, but come. All are welcome.

We will depart the docks “whenever” to anchorage just the other side of Pier C, arriving for lunch. If you have a larger boat and would like to stay overnight, the plan is to head back to the Club Sunday mid-morning in plenty of time for the boat parade and flag raising. For more info, contact anyone on the yachting committee.

Come On Out for a Boatful of Fun and

FriendshipSpectacular sunsets. The best happy hour anywhere. Camaraderie. You don’t have to own a boat or know how to rig a sail to enjoy what makes being on the water so much fun.

If you’ve ever thought about finding out what sailing is all about, the Yachting Committee has three words to say: “Come on out.”

“You’ll have the best time,” said Tom Lira. “If someone is willing to learn the ropes, you’ll have a great experience. It’s just a great way to get away and relieve stress.”

Added Tom: “We insist on fun. It’s all about being on the water and enjoying a few beers after.”

Many nights boats don’t go out because they lack crews. The Yachting Committee doesn’t need technical sailors. They’re looking for participants to help crew, ride in the observation boat and be judges.

It’s a great way to get your feet wet.Contact Tom or anyone on the Yachting Committee for additional information about the races.

They’re harried moms and dads three favorite letters – PNO. Back by popular demand, it’s a chance for parents to enjoy the pool, a quiet dinner or an evening of tennis while the kids are having their own fun time at child care.

Dates will be announced soon. Child care at the Fitness Center will be available from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Sign-ups are required due to limited space.

Special monthly themes along with corresponding games and crafts and a movie are planned.

Watch for more details around the Club.

Besides, one lawyer in the family is enough (his wife, Olya). I’ve found my dream job.”

If youngsters learn anything from Jonathan, it will be the value of hard work, believing in yourself and it’s never too late to pick up a racket.

Antle didn’t start playing until he was a relatively “old” at age 14.

“My dad breathed tennis and he always wanted me to play. But I was into baseball. One day, I said, ‘OK, I’ll play.’ Two hours seemed like 20 minutes and I was hooked.”

Goodbye baseball, hello tennis. It wasn’t as if Antle was firing off winners at the start.

“As a freshman at First Colonial, I was the 16th man on a team of 17,” he said, “It took a lot of hard work and practice, but by the time I was a senior, I was playing No. 1.”

He later played for ODU. “You learn a lot as a Division I athlete. There are a lot of demands on you.”

Parents’ Night OutReturn This SummerOur Ocean Safety Clinic is a great opportunity

for young swimmers to be confident in the water and learn basic safety. The course will be held the first week of June at the Fitness Center.

Sign ups begin May 16 and space is limited to 6 swimmers between ages 7-9.

Be Summer Safe

Tennis Aced Law Career

Jonathan Antle could be starting his law practice any day now.

But Antle has started another practice: teaching youngsters the finer points of tennis, as our new Assistant Tennis Pro.

“Law school was a great experience and I learned a lot,” said Antle, who graduated from the New England School of Law and is awaiting the results of the bar exam. “But along the way, I realized that law wasn’t a career for me. I don’t like to wear suits.

The temps are climbing. So, don’t forget to protect yourself against harmful UV rays. The Fitness Center Retail Store has plenty of caps, visors and sun block at the ready. NYCC sunglass straps are also for sale, so you and your shades won’t get separated.

We’ve Got You Covered

Our 2nd annual “Bikini Bottoms” series will have you ready for bikini season. The 45-minute weekend warrior classes are offered Saturdays in May (4th, 11th, 18th and 25th) at 10 a.m.

Be prepared to work you butt off, literally. The focus will be on cardio drills, legs, glutes and core work designed to have you ready to break out the swim suit with confidence. Cost is $5 per class (not included in monthly cap).

Bikini Bottoms

If you want to add length and strength to your game, this TRX clinic is a must. Taught by our in-house TRX pro Kevin Whitesell, the one-hour session will teach you golf specific exercises to help improve your swing and technique and play like a “Tiger.”

It all happens on Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. Cost is $8. Space is limited to 6 participants. Register with the Fitness Center Front Desk.

At law school, Jon met his wife Olya, a native of the Ukraine. They have been married for a year and a half and live in Virginia Beach.

Jon is no stranger to the Club, having played tennis and hung out at the pool as a teenager. He’s also worked in the tennis shop for several summers.

“It’s like being home,” he said. “I have always loved this place.”

He’ll be mainly working with juniors.

“The main thing is that they have fun,” said Jon. “That’s the key to staying with it. But you have to balance that with technical things like learning footwork and proper technique if a player wants to take it to the next level. I am a big believer in technique. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a youngster develop.”

Asked what he will do with his status as a lawyer, he laughed. “I guess I’ll put ESQ (Esquire) after my name on my tennis cards, when I pass the bar.”

Sea Dragon swimmers and parents can meet new head coach Ashlee Guerrero on May 19 from 3-5 p.m. at the Fitness Center.

Swimmers can also sign-up for the team, get their suits and learn the lowdown on the coming season at the get together.

A California native, Ashlee swam at Long Beach City College. Matt Elliott and Alicia Huther (see accompanying article) round out the staff. Currently, returning swimmers and newcomers are working on their conditioning and technique at stroke clinics.

Practice, said Guererro, will start May 28, the day after Memorial Day. Swimmers under 8 years old will meet 4:30-5:30 p.m. and those 9-and-up from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

The first meet is scheduled June 22.

Swim team newSThey’re Back in the Swim

Two familiar faces return to the Sea Dragons in assistant coaches Matt Elliott and Alicia Huther.

This is “Coach Matt’s” sixth summer working with young swimmers at the Club. Matt swam for Maury High School while he was still an 8th grader at Blair Middle. He went on to star at Maury and later swam competitively at VMI.

He currently works for Hampton Roads Sanitation District and hopes to pursue a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering at Old Dominion University. Matt has also recently served as the swim coach and JV baseball coach at Norfolk Collegiate. “I love coaching and being able to make a positive impact on kids’ lives. I look forward to seeing the returning swimmers and their families and getting to know all of the new ones.”

Alicia is back for her second year at the Club. A rising senior at Old Dominion studying

Meet the Coaches

history education, she is a breaststroker on the swim team.

She grew up in Apex, N.C. and swam in high school and on club teams.

Alicia combines “goofing around and being serious” in her coaching philosophy. One of her goals is to have swimmers improve their times over the course of the season and get a sense of satisfaction.

“Coaching swimming has been a great experience,” said Alicia, who hopes to land a teaching job after graduating. When not working, Alicia likes to hang out with friends, especially at YNot Pizza on Monarch Way.

“Knowing the kids from last year makes it even more fun this time,” she said.

Welcome back, Matt and Alicia.

“Sea Worthy” Clinics

The final Sea Dragon swim clinics are scheduled for Sundays, May 5, 12 and 19 to get all returning swimmers and newcomers in tip-top shape for the upcoming season.

Sign up today as space is limited to six swimmers per session.

Session I will take place from 2-2:45 p.m. and focus on building endurance and attention to all four swimming strokes.

Session II concentrates on mastering official diving starts and turns, from 3-3:45 p.m.

The swim team welcomes any and all help. Training for referees, starters and judges is being offered in June. Don’t have time for training? Many volunteer positions can be learned on the spot.

Without your help over the years, we wouldn’t have the great program we do. For more info, visit our website or email [email protected].
