May, 2008—President’s Message…Myrna Binion

What have I been doing with my time, you ask? Look to

the right and you will see the pictures of my new babies, Suzy (or

Sammy) and Fancy Cat. They lived at Jeanne Crider’s house

with their Mommy, Sassy, until a couple of weeks ago and now

they have taken over my art room and my life. I’m either playing

with them or feeding them or cleaning up after them! I’m sure

they will eventually turn into lovable, purring, sweet little darlings—right now they are whirlwinds of

fur and feet climbing here and running there and only stopping for a nap to recharge. Friskies

crunch underfoot in my art room and I just don’t what I’m going to do with my pastels when they

learn to get up on the tables. Oh well, I’m in love so it all must be worth it.

On a more Presidential note, our building committee had a meeting with Mayor Chuck

Hunter where we all talked about how much we would love to have an Art Center downtown in Gig

Harbor. That’s about as far as we have gotten but we are looking at all and any possibilities, grant

offerings, money sources, property availabilities and so on. If you have some expertise in the area of

grant writing or any other skills that could be helpful to us or a few extra million dollars, please call!

Can’t you just see a wonderful Art Center downtown that could be used by PAL and shared with per-

forming arts, quilters, photographers, musicians and so on? It would be a huge draw for the commu-

nity and an incredible resource for everyone in the arts.

In the meantime—we are moving on with the Summer Art Festival—there is more information

elsewhere in the newsletter—as usual we are counting on our PAL Members as volunteers. We need

you at the Art Festival and inside Key Bank to host our Members’ Show. We will need people to

share shifts in the Information Booth and in our new “Local Art Sales—PAL Booth”. Good News,

though, no more Water Wagon! The Board discussed this issue and decided that it is just too hard

for our members to haul water around the street in the hot afternoons. It is so easy now for people to

bring bottled water or they can purchase some at our info booth if they need it. We don’t want to

have our members out there on the 90 degree plus days any more—whew!

Well—gotta check on my kitties—see you at the meeting—Myrna

PRECIOUS METAL CLAY CLASS June 21st & June 22nd 9am – 5pm

This exciting class teaches a new & easy way of working with precious metals.

Debbie Jackson is a local jewelry artist who does beautiful work using the

Precious Metal Clay technique. You may have seen her work at our local Farmers

Market. The class will teach you to construct and kiln fire Precious Metal

Clay pieces with Fused Glass Cabs and create Hollow Forms/Dimensional Pieces

by learning torch and kiln firing techniques used to make bead caps, hollow

beads and other 3-D shapes.

Class will be held at Cedar Springs Studio in Gig Harbor. Beginners are wel-

comed. Cost is $150 plus materials. Call Debbie Jackson at 253-851-8446 for

more information. Class size is limited to 10.

Pat Rush recently attended the Professional Photographers of Wash-ington State Convention and Print Competition, held annually, at We-natchee. She entered four photo-graphs, all of which won ribbons and were accepted for the show. She was also awarded a gold bar which is earned from service to the State or-ganization and print merits.

The PAL critique group meeting at the Gig Harbor Libbrary will

have it's next meetings on 5/21/08 6:30pm. There were 4 partici-

pants at the first meeting and everyone felt energized by the feed-

back, support and sharing of knowledge and info. We had sharings

of watercolor note cards, hand painted silk scarves , pastel , oil and

landscapes, and experimemtal crylic mixed media. Anyone inter-

ested in participating should contact Karen Petrillose 582-0653,

PAL FESTIVAL: Thank you to the volunteers who signed up at our last meeting to help in our Festival on July 19th and 20th. However, we are still lacking a few com-mittee heads and other volunteers to work on either or both dates. As you all know, the Festival is our only source of the funds to pay for yearly operating expenses for our Art League. Please contact me by phone (851-0015) or e-mail ([email protected]) and let us know how you wish to support this im-portant event. Virginia Alvarez

From George Milliken: This year the information booth will have only 3 responsibilities - giving out information on the whereabouts of vendors, selling water (there will be no water wagon this year) and selling Festival t-shirts. We will not be selling members cards and art work since Myrna and Anne Knapp will have a separate booth for this purpose. I am counting on the return of most of my volunteers from the past but could use 2-3 more to help with a 2 hour 15 minute stint on Saturday July 14th or Sunday July 15th. Call George Milliken at 253-858-3672. Thanks for your cooperation

Art Festival Info & Stuff!

PAL ART BOOTH! Anne Knapp and Myrna Binion are setting up an Art Booth for PAL

Members’ sales at the art festival. We will use a PAL tent and will be in a spot up toward the food

vendor area. Any paid PAL Member may bring in 10 shrink wrapped or poly-bag items , prints or

originals and 20 art cards for sale (NO frames or glass!) . Each item will be clearly marked , by the

artist, with 2 tags (adhesive address labels will work) with artist name & phone #, title and price.

Each artist will bring an inventory sheet to put in a binder and we will paste the 2nd tag on that

when an item sells. At the end of the festival, we will add up each sheet and mail you the money.

Art can be delivered to the bank at the same time as paintings come in for the Summer Mem-

bers’ Show and your information should be available at the same time to put in a binder. You must

pick your unsold art items up at 5:00 Sunday evening from the tent at the festival .

A 20% commission will be taken on items sold. Unless you work for 2 hours in the booth—

then a 10% commission will be taken on items sold. We will need 2 people in the booth at all times

during the festival and will need help setting up on Friday. It all counts as helping out and we will

honor your time toward the commission cost. We will have a sign-up sheet or just contact us to vol-

unteer. (see 2nd page of newsletter for contact info)

We have shrink wrap holders and card racks and will make the booth look fun and attrac-

tive—we like doing that stuff!

As usual—we will be as careful as possible with your items but they are not insured and we

are not responsible for loss or damage.

MAY VIDEO REVIEW By Cecile Anderson

We recently purchased another pastel video for our library entitled Plein Air with Pastel by Master Pastelist Greg Biolchini. This is an 80 minute DVD featuring one demo from start to finish. The artist uses wet and dry technique alternately. He states that “even a beginning student can use pastel as a wash effectively, and more accomplished art-ists may be pleasantly surprised at how pastel over wash can expand their technical skills." Besides the actual paint-ing demo, he covers subjects such as preparing a painting surface (the artist creates his own paper using a gesso & pumice mixture over mat board), fixative, matting and framing.

Scholarship Committee—Susan Paredes regrets that she will be stepping down as Scholarship Committee Chair for personal reasons.

She is happy to tell you that two PAL members stepped up to take over the respon-sibilities of chairperson, Robin Peterson and recent member, Sherrie Bonsell until the po-sition is up for voting in Sept.

Susan has done a wonderful job as chairperson and will be missed.

Jeanne Crider, her sister LaVonne Smith, Charli Meacham and Pat Rush "tiptoed through the tulips" during April in Skagit County. Here are some of the images they captured. Photos and Painting by Pat Rush.

Christy Camerer won the Associated Arts of Ocean Shores 39th National Juried Fine Art Show Peoples’ Choice Award! Russ's hand-made wormwood frame from an old piling was the draw to this drawing.

PAL Board Meeting April 22, 2008

Present: Myrna Binion, Jon Lonning, George Milliken, Debbie Dorn, Virginia Alvarez, Carol Valstyn, Anne Knapp, and Arvid Anderson.

Jon Lonning reported the treasury stands at $133,186. Laura McClintock has the books to do an audit of the treasury for PAL.

Building Committee-has an appointment to talk with the mayor, Chuck Hunter, about local options and ideas for a Community Arts Building. We need a permanent home, spot for meetings, exhibits, to house not just us but other arts groups (performing and vis-ual). The city would like us to be downtown, and it would be nice to be close to art walk, etc. There are parking concerns downtown. Additional money could be raised through grants. It takes having a detailed plan in order to raise money. George Milliken has a list of major companies involved in art patronage. The board brainstormed a list of possible locations. George said that the Performing Arts Center in Florence, Oregon also hosts conventions and has been a real asset to the community.

Drawing You in- Karen Wilsey, the coordinator, wants to work with PAL. She wants to know if we can partner with the city to have better liability insurance for the event. The board decided after discussion that we would allow them to fall under our insurance as long as the grant from the city for Drawing You In does not count against PAL, as there is a $2000 limit, and we need the full grant for our Regional Show. Arvid is going to communicate the appropriate wording.

Festival- Myrna reminded Carol and Virginia to make sure to invite the city officials to the Art festival Show. Virginia is working on committee lists. Arvid is working with Key Bank on details for the Art Show. Jon is in charge of generator and cleaning- we need a separate “fresh” clean up committee at the end. George is heading up the Info Booth. Carol is looking into new signs to use f or directions along Judson Street. Mary Bessette is looking for a coffee vendor for the Festival, and arranging for coffee and donuts in the morning. There was a discussion of how to cover the water wagon this year. Virginia was to research bottled water, it was de-cided (George moved, Carol seconded) to not provide water at the Festival this year. Carol reported that several more vendors have dropped out this year than usual. PAL could have a booth to sell Members’ cards and prints. Anne Knapp and Myrna Binion volun-teered to head up the PAL booth. We would allow members to bring in a certain number of prints and cards, if the member volun-teered to staff the booth, they would pay 10% commission on any item sold and if they did not help with the booth, the commission fee would be 20%. Anne said she has worked with a similar idea- you use 2 tags on every item. If the item is sold, one tag is taken off so that it is clear what exactly was sold and for what artist. We need Visa/MC capability to sell effectively. It would be nice to have for the sales at the Info Booth also (T shirts, posters). It was reported that Bill Parker will not be hosting a conflicting event this year.

Anne Knapp reported that we would present the awards to the students who created the winning posters at the April Meeting. The invitations have been sent, the winning teacher would not be able to attend due to a previous commitment. The Gateway did a nice article on the Peninsula High School Art Program. The winning poster is already at the printers to use for ads, the posters and T shirts.

Regional Show- Debbie Dorn said that the 137 art entries had been sent to Judy Morris, and that she will know at the end of the week which entries would be in the show. Then she would tackle letting all the entrants know the results. She will ask for volunteers to receive the art work, and to hang the show at the Civic Center. Both Robin Peterson and Lita Dawn Stanton are trained in the hanging system at the Civic Center. Debbie would like to do a presentation at the May Meeting showing all the entries.

Mimi Van Ballenberghe sent in a report on workshops- Fourteen people participated in the Experimental Mixed Media Workshop presented by NWWS and AWS award-winner Jeannie Grisham. Jeannie was our juror for last summer's 2007 membership show. Jeannie offered individual critiques throughout the workshop as well as a group critique at the end. A signup sheet was dis-tributed to ensure that participants' questions were answered and for private critiques. In addition to trying out new painting and composition techniques, the workshop provided PAL members with an opportunity to learn more about our organization and to interact on a personal level with other PAL members - often sharing painting hints and valuable techniques with one another. Peo-ple expressed their appreciation for being able to take a workshop in Gig Harbor without having to drive to Tacoma or Seattle for professional development. Many felt this was especially valuable now that gas prices are soaring. While there are a numbr of work-shops available in the Puget Sound region as a whole, the importance of providing workshops locally to artists was a much expressed sentiment and appreciated need. The workshop was totally self-supporting; final receipts will be transferred to Jon Loning.

Rhene is working with TCC Gig Harbor Campus as a site for our Fall Show. There will be a screening to qualify as an exhibiting member before the June PAL meeting.

Anne Knapp said that the Plein Air schedule is posted on the website and in the monthly newsletter and that in spite of unseasona-bly cold weather, they had already had some successful outings. Any members that wish to get on the email list about each weeks painting site should contact Anne Knapp at [email protected].

The meeting adjourned at 12 noon. Respectfully submitted- Anne knapp

Correction to March Minutes: Myrna Binion offered to stay one more year as President.

Jeanne Grisham from

Bainbridge Island

taught a wonderful

workshop last month in

Donna Trent’s studio.

The workshop was all

about water media—

water, water, water!

The students had a memorable learning experience and

have many new ideas about what can be used to perk up an

old, failed watercolor painting, what can be used with water,

and how to “go for it!” without fear! Thanks to Jeanne for

being so generous with her knowledge, to Donna Trent for

The use of her studio and to Mimi Van Ballenberghe

for setting up this fine workshop.
