During the Easter season we are concluding each petition in the Prayers of the People with the Spanish phrase “Oremos al Señor,” which means “Let us pray to the Lord.” The congregation is invited to respond in English (“Lord, have mercy”) or in Spanish (“Señor, ten piedad”). This small and simple change brings with it a number of blessings, which I will describe below, and is also consistent with the inclusion of other non-English words during the Eucharist. words might make visitors feel more welcome.

During the Prayers of the People we pray for others, and—human nature being what it is—we are sometimes lured into thinking only of people who are like us. However, the love of God that Jesus brought into the world was shocking to many of the established religion precisely because it required them to include those who were different. Some resented the wideness of God's mercy so much that they crucified him! Adding a few foreign words helps us remember that we pray for those who are different from us, as well as those who are like us.

A significant blessing we receive from this practice is specific to Spanish. We find ourselves in a community with many Latino members. They are neighbors we are called to love, but many of these neighbors are treated as second-class citizens. Despite the fact that many people in Carmel show deep respect for all people, I have watched Latino workers being treated by some as if they were invisible. We have a Latino member who was accused of a crime by an Anglo resident simply because he happened to be walking by her house (12 hours later!). There is a real force in our community to treat Latinos as unworthy of respect. It is a societal force that Jesus Christ calls us to oppose and work to correct. The Spanish words that we use to conclude our prayers

communicate our commitment to respect all of our local neighbors.

Our Episcopal diocese includes a wonderful blend of Anglo and Latino members. So when we worship together as a diocese, the bulletin includes the rite in both English and Spanish, in parallel columns. I must say, it took me a while to get used to the congregation alternating between languages. Because I cannot speak Spanish, I resented this practice at first, but afterward came to appreciate how this custom affirms our unity in Christ while embracing our diversity. The few Spanish words in our liturgy remind us of who we are as the Diocese of El Camino Real.

This usage points to the blessing of our communion in Jesus Christ, and certainly transcends political opinions about immigration policy. I trust that you have already discovered this Easter blessing; however, if not, then know that it is perfectly okay not to like something we do in the liturgy, because we worship in order to glorify Jesus Christ and for the sake of others. As a trained liturgist, I often encounter something that I may not like in a liturgy. When this happens, I set my reaction aside and focus on the presence of Jesus Christ. For our primary purpose is not to please ourselves, or even to be spiritually fed, but to gather as the Body of Christ for the sake of those who are not baptized, and to welcome the lost and the lonely. Please note carefully that we will have a difficult time thanking and praising

Introducing Conversatio

September 28-30. 2012 All Saints' will offer the our first Festival of Christian Spirituality.

It will be different than a conference as it is highly participatory; and different than a workshop in that it is a dialog; and different than a retreat in that it will be right here at All Saints' in Carmel-by-the-Sea in the midst of commerce. Our theme in 2012 is 'The Gift of Poverty and Abundance'. We hope you will register, and invite a friend to join you for this unique new experience.

Conversatio, the key discipline of the festival, is a unique method long treasured, but little practiced, in the Church. Conversatio involves a movement in the Spirit from discernment to reconciliation and transformation.

Conversatio describes a way of life by which disciples follow the living presence of Christ through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Not only

are we transformed, but we become God’s agents for transforming in the world. This dynamic characterizes the love of Christ and the life of his disciples.

God if we focus on our own likes and dislikes. As your rector, I encourage you to offer yourself and the liturgy to God, and give thanks for the unexpected Easter blessings it brings.

Fr. Rick

our Worship

Children in the Church

by Todd Samra, D.A.

The importance of children in church becomes an increasingly vital ministry as we grow as a parish. Currently, the All Saints’ Singers present music at the 10:30 a.m. service once per month, during the school year. During the summer, however, these little singers get some time off. To offset this, we are offering Bach to the Future: a summer day-camp for children in grades K-8.

Bach to the Future was founded by Director Carteena Robohm, Director of Music at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church. This is the first year that All Saints’ will be the sole sponsor, as the Bach Festival had dropped this program as part of a regime change. It is then our responsibility to make sure that this program has plenty of volunteers.

Volunteers are needed in a couple of different categories: teaching/supervision volunteers, who assist with the kids in various activities; and Bach’s Lunch volunteers, who put together box lunches for the kids. What I am asking for is an army of volunteers – the more the merrier!

In order for this program to succeed, your help is needed. If you have teaching experience or a background in working with children, then you should volunteer to help. If you enjoy making food, then you should volunteer. But the real reason you should volunteer is to support the ministry of the parish. It is vital that we have as many of you as possible here to assist, so please consider your time.

There are two sessions for Bach to the Future this year.

Dates are as follows: Week I: July 16-20, 2012…8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Special presentation at All Saints on July 22, 10:30 a.m. - Cost: $150

Week II: July 23-27, 2012…8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Special presentation at All Saints on July 29, 10:30 a.m. - Cost: $150

Teaching volunteers can be here half days or full days, or one week and not the other, or a creative combination. Bach’s Lunch volunteers: I would like to assemble five teams, one for each

day, and have each team work that day both weeks. Three to four are needed on each team.

The children then sing for the 10:30 a.m. service on the Sunday following their respective weeks in the music camp, along with guests from the Bach Festival.

Please consider joining one of our teams as assisting with this ever-so important program. Please contact me at [email protected], or contact the church office.

Soli Deo Gloria

5:30 p.m. Services

Evensong is a contemplative service warmed by candlelight and Holy Communion that is scheduled for the first Sunday of each month. The music is led from the piano, prayers, and meditation. A light supper reception follows in Seccombe Hall.

During the regular weekly evening service we offer a candlelit service for busy people of all ages, including sports enthusiasts. Enjoy the beauty and peace as you are refreshed by the simplicity of prayers and music. Be renewed with hope to share the love of Jesus Christ in the coming week.

Worship: We glorify Christ by enacting liturgies steeped in beauty,

mystery, and creativity that refresh like

springs of living water.

Writing a Page of our History

In addition to both the history that Elizabeth Barratt has published for our enjoyment and the pictorial book that Rodney Warren will offer after our centennial year is over, we are putting together "A People’s History of All Saints’ Episcopal Church." This will be a history written as each of us puts in writing a memory from our own personal history with All Saints’. Whether you have visited only once or have been at the church for your entire life, you have a memory to share and a moment in history to record. Choose a story, write it down, and send it to us at [email protected]. Note “History” in the subject line of your e-mail. If you do not use e-mail you may submit a handwritten story, but please make sure it is legible. The authors must be named, and the editors of the website reserve the right of editorship. The entire people’s history project will be accessible on our website.

Music at All Saints' Concert

On June 1 Music at All Saints' presents the married dynamic duo, Edward Arron and Jeewon Park, whose musical talent has stunned audiences in performances world wide. Visit our website for more information: www.allsaintscarmel.org.

Tickets for the concert are available on our church website where you may purchase tickets any time using your credit card, and in the office when paying by cash or check.

Due to a new security policy, we can only accept checks or cash in the church office and on Sundays.

Book Club

Tuesday, May 8, 2012—All Saints’ Book Club…Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vélodrome d'Hiver roundup, but not before she locks her younger

brother in a cupboard in the family's apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours.

Paris, May 2002: On Vélodrome d'Hiver’s 60th anniversary, journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France's past. Through her contemporary investigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that connect her to Sarah. Julia finds herself compelled to retrace the girl's ordeal, from that terrible term in the Vélodrome d'Hiver, to the camps, and beyond. As she probes into Sarah's past, she begins to question her own place in France, and to reevaluate her marriage and her life.

The May All Saint’s Book club selection, Sarah’s Key, is a tragic and appalling moment in French history—the roundup by French police and transport to Auschwitz of 13,000 Parisian Jews. The author, Tatiana de Rosnay, offers a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this shamefully painful episode.

The All Saints’ Book Club regularly meets in the church library the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. The review leader/presenter brings lettuce for a salad, and the other participants bring something to place in the salad or food to share.

Two Women of All Saints' Honored

We are delighted to present to you two women who are long time members of All Saints' and merited special recognition in the month of April. Certainly there are many, including men, who have contributed honorably to the community

Walking through Jello

Walking through Jello: a process of finding solid ground while experiencing loss will be taught this Spring/Early Summer by The Rev. Mother Cynthia M. Spencer, a retired Episcopal priest, who has recently joined us at All Saints. Cynthia served both as Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator for the last 6 years at Valor HospiceCare in Tucson, Arizona.

This class is six sessions, during which you will learn skills to help you through life’s ongoing journey of loss. There is no cost and open to all who want to come. This is for anyone who has experienced loss: death, divorce, loss of pet, job, friendship or health. It offers a look at understanding grief, our emotions, our needs for support and a balanced life. It focuses on how we can honor what we have lost and how we can begin to re-construct our lives.

Dates: Mondays May 7 - June 11 Time: 6:00 pm (you may bring a “bag supper”) Place: Library (lower level) at All Saints'

If you would like to attend, please register by contacting Mother Cynthia at: 520-260-5158 or send her an email at: [email protected].

Sunday 9:15 a.m. Forums and Classes

Adult Classes resume on May 13 after preserving the first Sunday of May for a presentation by Interfaith Outreach of Carmel.

Confirmations

At the 10:30 a.m. service on May 6 there will be several youth confirmed.

Youth Ministryby Robin Denney

Please save the date for the next youth and family service day: May 19, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. I'm still working on hashing out the details of where we will be going, but I'm

trying to find a gleaning opportunity or helping out on a gardening project that is producing food for the hungry. I'll send out the details as soon as I have them! We will be doing something different each month.

We had a wonderful first Youth and Family Service Day at Dorothy's Kitchen in Salinas last Saturday! We'll go there again in the fall, so don't worry if you had to miss it. See the short article and photo here: http://www.allsaintscarmel.org/2012/04/youth-and-family-service-day. I hope you will be able to join us for the next service day! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or suggestions!

Also, I wanted to let you know that the Sierra Service Project summer mission trip is still open. I will be going as a chaperone for the Middle School Trip, along with 3 youth from All Saints'! The dates are: July 29- August 3 for middle school (and July 29 - August 4 for high school). We will begin fund raising soon!

To learn more about our youth ministry please email Robin Denney at [email protected] or call Robin on her cell phone 805-835-8538.

Family Faith

Parents involved in the Family Faith Conversations enthusiastically favor having their children participate in the liturgy on Sundays, so we are cancelling the Seasons of the Spirit class for children in grades three to five. Godly Play for the 10:30 a.m. service and nursery care from 9:00 a.m. to noon will continue. Each Sunday you will find special bulletins (The Sunday Paper and The Sunday Paper, Jr.) for younger and older children at the back of the church.

Discipleship: We follow Jesus Christ and lead

others into the deep waters of faith.

Opportunities to Serve

Presently we have more than 130 people serving on a ministry team at All Saints'. That's commendable.

Sometimes people come to church needed to be healed, rest and many find that by serving others they find their faith renewed.

Our website has a new feature that lists all the ministry teams that you could join. You may contact the leader of the ministry team or commission (see page 15) or send an email to Greg Troxell: [email protected].

Chair of the Santa Lucia Commission - Jim Shillinglaw has lovingly served as the Chair for more than ten years and is now needing to pass on the torch to a new leader who is able to maintain the ministry, lead quarterly commission meetings, and see that contracts and work that needs to be done is completed.

Altar Guild - We are looking for men or women who enjoying preparing a meal for friends, and who could offer the church that same ministry of setting tables and tidying up afterward. There is only one place setting, and you would serve at the convenience of your travel schedule. Our Altar Guild members are friendly and would welcome you with open arms. Contact Valerie Warren through the church office.

Welcoming Team - Join this team of friendly folks that welcome visitors and members on Sunday Morning and introduce them to other members and leaders after the services. Contact the office or Bonnie Bufkin on Sunday to learn more.

Bach to the Future - This is a summer music camp/program for youth and children in middle school and elementary school. It will be sponsored this year by All Saints’ Episcopal Church.

Thank You

• Thank you to those who helped clean up the Santa Lucia Campground and Chapel in Big Sur on April 27. The work day volunteers included: Jim Shillinglaw, Izzi Shillinglaw, Patti Gagliotti, Tom Saunders, Francis and

Jenine, Greg Troxell and Raul Garcia.

• Thanks to Susan Britton who led a team of more than ten people to decorate the interior of the church for Palm Sunday, the week of the passion and then Easter. Contact Susan or the church office if you would like to join the team that will decorate the church a few days before Pentecost, Sunday, May 27.

Online Giving is Possible

The top navigation bar of our website has a button simply labeled 'Give'. When you click that link you will be taken to a page with instructions and that allow you to set up recurring gifts to satisfy your pledge or make one time gifts using: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, or e-check. The secure portal allows you to get the points you want, or give directly from your checking account.

Stewardship: We offer our all so that

Christ may change water into wine.

Memorial Day May 28, 2012

A prayer of gratitude for all those who have helped preserve our freedoms, and sustain the hope of world peace.

Contact the office to serve at All Saints' welcome table at the Naval Post Graduate School (NPS) on May 28.

Youth and Family Service Day

By Robin Denney

Eleven people participated in the first monthly youth and family service day, on April 21. We prepared and served the meal at Dorothy’s Kitchen in Salinas for 175 people. We made spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, garlic bread, and oranges, and served desert. We also made tuna sandwiches and peanut butter sandwiches for people to take with them.

The staff at Dorothy’s kitchen were so helpful, and we had a great time with them. It was a blessing to get to interact with the people we were serving, and hear some of their stories.

In our discussion afterward, some of the youth

mentioned how surprised they were by the kindness that the patrons showed to each other and to us. “Everyone said thank you, and no one would take the last piece of pie, they kept saying ‘I’ll leave that for the next person in line.’”

We worked hard. We laughed. We made delicious food. We prayed. We served. We met Christ there at Dorothy’s Kitchen.

Join us next month! Save the date: May 19, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.. We will either be doing gleaning, or a garden project, with the end goal of producing food for the hungry. Contact Robin Denney, using the website contact form.

Water from the well in Haiti

We received the first photos of the new well at St. Patrick’s in LaCorbe, Haiti. Rosemary Smith, who continues to champion the cause wrote, “At last, clean, fresh water for the school and village of LaCorbe, Haiti.” The Rev. Lazard Amirold wrote, “Yesterday we had mass at St Patrick. The people praised the Lord for the water and for your Love. You may read more of the story online.

Summer Services at Santa Lucia

We are pleased to share that we will be able to hold weekly services at the Santa Lucia Chapel at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evenings for all of June, July, and August.

Mother Cynthia and Fr. Rick will be the primary celebrants and at times other clergy will serve. Please invite your friends and especially those who live in or

and the mission. Yet now we turn the spotlight to these two women, and ask you to join us in congratulating both of these women.

Rosemary Smith

by Ed Fincke

We are fortunate to have over 130 active volunteers “glorifying Christ and serving others.” Among them is Rosemary Smith, who was chosen by the vestry as Woman of the Year.

Rosemary has served the Church in so many ways over the years: She has been in charge of altar flowers, she is serving on the Altar Guild, and is an active participant in the United Thank Offering each year. She is especially active on the Outreach Commission, managing the Food Pantry, taking minutes of meetings, and providing the guiding light for our outreach to the needy. Additionally, she is our go-to person for our parish ministry to St. Patrick's, in Haiti.

She goes about making a difference by serving with a seamless artistry of leading and following. She often inspires others to lead, but she does not hesitate to lead herself, and she rolls up her sleeves and simply gets the job done.

Rosemary was honored by the diocese on Saturday, April 28 at a ceremony at St. George's Church in Salinas. Her commitment and service to the Parish is greatly appreciated.

Nancy Jones

by Andrea Matters

Nancy Jones, Founder and President of Interfaith Outreach of Carmel received a United Way Community Service Award at their recent awards luncheon on April 11. Nancy has worked tirelessly to get the IOC started, to gain it's non-profit status, and lead it into being an organization that is making a difference in Monterey County.

Below is the write up from United Way's web site.

Retiring after 35 years as an engineering and project manager for aerospace companies, Nancy Jones moved to Carmel and has been active since the moment she arrived. Since 2005, Nancy has been responsible for the Carmel Bach Festival’s musician hospitality, obtaining over 5000 meals from scores of local restaurants and organizing volunteers for that effort. In 2007, Nancy led the effort to establish the Interfaith Outreach of Carmel. The IOC was the result of Nancy’s vision…. to bring local faith communities together to improve their ability to help those in need. To date, 10 faith communities are now participants in the IOC. To generate consistent funds she spearheaded the Joining Hands Benefit Shop. After months of groundwork, Joining Hands opened in 2010 and by December of 2011 had distributed over $50,000 to organizations working to prevent homelessness.

Praise and Potluck with The Band

Please join us on May 12, at 5:30 p.m. in Seccombe Hall. If you come, you are welcome to bring a song or sheet music to share. Participants are also asked to bring food to share.

This is open to people of all ages: children are encouraged to attend; and musical talent is not a requirement, you can come and sing, or dance, or both. If you have an instrument, please bring it along too, and come enjoy the community of Christ in an informal and relaxed setting that includes music, prayers, food, and fellowship.

Caring Ministries

Here at All Saints' we are embarking on a journey to organize a Caring Ministry to meet the needs of our parishioners. To begin, we hope to meet the more immediate and practical needs of our members, such as rides to appointments, home support for those recovering from illness or surgery, hospital and hospice visitation, meals to the bereaved or home bound and other needs as they are encountered. It is our hope that our fellow members will advise us when they or

someone they know is in need, and give us the opportunity to offer the love and compassion we aspire to as Christians. Please contact Robin Reyes at [email protected], or 410-707-0064, or leave a message in the office if we can help you or someone you know, or if you are interested in joining our ministry.

Backpack with the Second Winders

Adventure in the High Sierra with the Second Winders! Backpack into the Silver Divide from July 28th to August 5th.

There will be two teams, Red One and Red Two. Red One will pack from Lake Edison up to Graveyard Lakes and on; Red Two will horse-pack in to set up a base camp at the Devil’s Bathtub. Carrying personal gear, group kit and food is a challenge, but layover days allow short hikes up granite peaks to incredible vistas, dips in mountain lakes, and flower sketching.

Visit the website at www.secondwinders.org for hike descriptions, contacts, registration form and last year’s photos. Second Winders are adult newcomers, experienced hikers and seniors sponsored by the Diocese of El Camino.

Cost for food, group supplies and leadership is $140 per person; packhorses on the first day add about $70. Registration deadline is May 1st. Please call if you have questions: Bob Wrucke (650) 851-8435 or Jim Miller (650) 954-5170.

Farewell Virginia

It is with sweet sorrow and joyful memories that we held a reception on Sunday, April 29 after the 10:30 a.m. service.

Virginia is moving to Oxnard to live with her son after worshiping and being a very active member of All Saints' since 1970. Virginia, now 94, is an inspiration to many. She has served in just about every capacity at the All Saints', save the

Altar Guild. Only recently did she stop singing in the chancel choir and volunteering in the front office. Virginia has remained an active member of the Wednesday morning Bible Study in Grant Hall.

You may watch a brief video of her parting words on Youtube: http://youtu.be/dTc-pwdT2H0. If you missed the reception a card or flowers would be a lovely gesture at her new address:

the Business of the Vestry

Our Budget Gap

We have made tremendous strides in generosity, as members and friends fully fund our ministries. We have raised almost $50,000 in additional pledges and donations. After losing one pledge, we are now $33,552 away from funding the operating budget.

The vestry has already received two more verbal commitments, and they continue to visit parishioners, to solicit input and to ask for support.

The vestry will be reviewing and, if necessary, revising the budget in June. So please continue to pray and to give!

Walking the Way

A workshop on stewardship with The Rt. Rev. Greg Rickel Bishop, the Diocese of Olympia is being offered by the Diocese of El Camino Real.

The workshop is designed to further discussions and learning about how should we talk about stewardship in our congregations, and how might we inform new members about supporting the vision.

Several vestry members will be attending and we hope more will register. Bring your questions and help us strengthen stewardship at All Saints'.

The workshop will be on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1071 Pajaro St., Salinas. We will gather for coffee and refreshments at 9:30 a.m. and the conference will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – Workshop (lunch included).

Please bring your Bible and a Prayer Book. $25 per person, register at www.edecr.org by May 15. After May 15 or at the door, $30 per person. Click here to register.

ASDS Graduation Ceremony

At 9:00 a.m. on June 1 the halls, parking spaces and church will be full of young families from All Saints' Day School.

The graduation ceremony is the culmination of a student’s educational years at All Saints’ Day School and is always a touching occasion. Held each year at All Saints' on the first Friday morning in June, all students join in as we celebrate the graduation of our 8th graders. Poised graduates give articulate, moving, and memorable graduation speeches to the audience of students, parents, families and friends. A reception hosted by 7th grade parents is held in the parish hall immediately following. It is a never-to-be-forgotten day.

Ascension Day

Thursday, May 17 is the fortieth day of Easter and following the Christian tradition which dates back to 68 a.d. we will celebrate Ascension Day with two services, one at noon and the other at 7:00 p.m..

Join others for remembrance of this sacred day as it marks the ascension of Christ, who is our sure victory and source of faith and hope in the midst of troubled times.

As part of the diocesan strategic plan launched at our 2011 convention, El Camino Real is conducting a survey throughout the Easter season to determine how its members are currently getting their information about happenings throughout the diocese. The results of the survey will be used to create a communications strategy which incorporates more diverse, inclusive, and accessible ways of learning, connecting and collaborating - so every voice counts! Visit the link below to complete the survey: http://www.allsaintscarmel.org/2012/04/growing-the-conversation or this link to print a pdf: http://goo.gl/vXvWF
