Well Done to all the students in Leaving Cert Applied

Our class were doing an enterprise for our task. We were also happy with the idea of making a bit of money. We decided to make timetable key rings which Adrian Mitchell came up with the company name L.C.Ables timetables. We all thought this was a great name so we started cracking on with the work. We got broken up into different groups. We had different groups like treasurers, marketing team, sales team and production team. I was one of the sales managers. It was my job to go to classes showing a sample made key ring and trying to persuade students to purchase our product. We sold about 50 key rings which we were delighted with .We stopped selling our product just after Easter and made a healthy profit of 105 Euros. By Paul Whelan.

Our Fifth Year students have just returned from a very successful work placement which began on the 9th May and finished on the 13th May. Work Placement is a very important aspect of the education of students in St. Nessan’s Community College. It provides an opportunity for students to explore career options and try out job seeking and work place skills acquired during the course of the programme. It is a requirement of the LCVP course. However as the Work Placement Programme always proves to be an enriching learning experience all fifth year students are given the opportunity to go on Work Placement. Work Placement is only made possible with the cooperation of all the Employers and Business in the area. The School and Students would sincerely like to thank the following Businesses and Organisations for the opportunity they so kindly gave to our students in offering them a placement this year. The fifth year students would also like to thank their teachers Mr. Clifford and Ms O’Sullivan, for preparing them for their work placement, Ms. Brennan for organising the placements and paperwork and all their class teachers for monitoring them while on their placements.

Here are a sample of the quotes about their experience:

I think more people should work with them and get their Kick Start coaching badges”. John Paul“Working in a shop is very hard at the start but when you spend a lot of time there you really get to know the shop and the people. Good job for the future”. Lisa “It was an experience of a life time and I loved every minute of it”. Kelsey“I loved it, everyday was different and enjoyable”. Emma“Really helped me in my future choices”. Sally“I had a great time and it really helped me with my future career”. Pamela“I enjoyed everyday I was there and learnt a lot from the experience”. Rachel

TY’s visited the Frank McCourt Museum on Wednesday 18th May. Una Heaton who developed the museum at the Old Leamy’s School in Harstonge gave the class a guided tour and a book reading. The museum features replicas of the old school class in Leamys and rooms from the McCourt home. The aim of the visit was to heighten an awareness of Frank McCourt, who grew up in abject poverty and to let the museum tell his story in line with Angela’s Ashes. The students were amazed to see a classroom of the 1930s where Frank and his siblings attended as pupils in real life and they participated in selected school games and competitions. The students also viewed a collection of memorabilia, old school books,copies,photos,slates,uniforms-all donated by former pupils of Leamy School. Some of Franks ashes were given to the museum by his family and the students were intrigued by the ashes. The ashes are currently in a box overlooking Frank’s former classroom. The visit really brought the book to life and the students returned determined to finish reading it.

Tasks are one of the biggest assignments that the LCA students have to complete over their two year course. Tasks are worth the most amounts of marks towards their Leaving Certificate. In Session 2 they have completed two full tasks in Craft and Design and Vocational Preparation class and half the Personal Reflection Task.

In Craft and Design each student went about designing and printing their own T-Shirts. They used tie dyeing, stencil cutting, sponging and fabric printing techniques to create their original designs. They also had to write up an extensive report on their work and were interviewed by an examiner from the State Examination Commission on the 12th February. They will receive the results of this interview and their Enterprise Task interview in September.

On Monday the 16th Of May 30 second years ( with the help of Mr. Johnston and Ms. Beaumont) set out on a voyage to the wilderness of the Burren Co. Clare. The destination….Bellharbour. The suitcases and sweets were all packed and even though we didn’t stop at a shop on the way the journey went very well. When we arrived at the education centre we got straight into it as there was no time to waste. The girls put all their bags in their room and the boys did the same. We were brought straight into the dining room where the students were given the fright of their lives when they realised they would be the ones doing all the cleaning after each meal. Although we were all divided into teams the first activity was for everybody. We set out on the bus (which usually involved sitting somewhere near a dog) and drove to the mountain. We set off in two groups and although the plan was to meet each other at the top this never happened. Our group managed to get over the top and meet them down the other side. At times it felt like it was never going to end but we all really enjoyed it. Next we were back to the centre for some soup and bread (scones) and we were all set for our next activity. Group 1 & 3 went rock climbing and group 2 went body boarding. Almost everybody enjoyed themselves, except for a select few who managed to get themselves lost. After showering and eating we were set for a long night ahead. The boys left in search of fire wood and the rest

of the gang ran wild around the centre playing soccer and ping pong in the games room. Ms. Beaumont was left to make tea and toast for what felt like 100 people. Lights were out at 12 and after a few corrections and one stint in the sin bin everybody fell asleep. Waking the next morning was hard for everybody involved but they managed to drag themselves downstairs for some breakfast. Activities stated at 9 and group 1 & 3 went kayaking while group 2 went caving. Every-body came back in high spirits and after another bowl of soup we were set for round two of activities. We just swapped roles and the caving went down a treat with the helpful guidance of Calvin Prendergast. We all really enjoyed it and although we came back absolutely soaked it was definitely worth it. It really was wishful thinking by the teachers to think that this would ware them out because it really didn’t so we decided to set up a few activities. We first played a game of orienteering which was really fun except for some students who decided to cheat (I wont mention any names). We then decided to have a talent show. We had performances from Nathan Molloy, Samantha Quinn, Carly Fitzgerald, Jason Griffin, Kelsey Ryan and Chris Kaya.

They were all excellent but I think the winner had to be Jason Griffin. It was then bedtime and after a lot of pretending to fall asleep everybody actually did. Wednesday morning was by far the hardest morning to get out of bed. There seemed to have been a total transformation from the night before and except for a few grunts nobody wanted to move. Eventually everybody was up and down for their breakfast and it was then that we gave them the great news that all the rooms had to tidied before we went for our last activity. The boys were brilliant and their room was spotless in a very short space of time, the same however can not be said for the girls. Jonathan Roche even grabbed a hover and tried to clean the girls room. It was eventually clean and we set off for our last activity. Group 1 & 3 went body boarding and group 2 went rock climbing. By the time the groups were back we were all ready to go home. We loaded the bus and set home for St. Nessan’s. The journey home was loud to say the least and again we didn’t stop at a shop (not even for strawberry flavoured water). All in all the trip was a major success, everybody really enjoyed themselves and even though there were a few tired heads on Thursday morning I’m sure we would all definitely go back again. Just maybe we could leave the make-up and straightners at home next time!!!!

2nd Year Trip To Belharbour

TY Trip to DublinTransition year Students recently went to Dublin for a History / Geography Field Trip. We visited Leinster House, The National History and Archaeological Museum and Trinity College.Deputy Kieran O’ Donnell organised the visit to Leinster House where we got a guided tour. The Senate is not back

yet after the Election so we were able to sit and chat in the Senate Chamber. We each got a copy of the 1916 proclamation. After the tour it was nice to be able to relax in the Dáil bar where Deputy O’ Donnell brought us refreshments. Ellen Tobin Hogan who has become the Public speaker of the class during the year thanked him. Deputy o’ Donnell was very impressed to hear that St. Nessan’s had won another All Ire-land title this year with The F1 Schools project. The National History Museum is next door so we didn’t have far to travel. It is very big and there is a fascinating Egyptian exhibition there at present. It was a pity that we couldn’t see the Ardagh Chalice from Limerick, as that room is being reconstructured at present. The Museum has a large variety of

archaeological finds dating back to the Stone age. Finally we went to Trinity College where third level Students were busy preparing for their exams. For some of us the highlight of the visit was our trip downtown where we got to see some of the Liverpool players. It was a great day out andMs Campbell Cuddihy and Ms. O’ Brien came with us.
