Why Marathon?William Shakespeare’s Juliet asks the question “What’s in a name?” The answer is much more than you might think.

Now many people who come to us or hear about us wonder why we're called Marathon Sprachen. There are a few answers to this question. First, the word marathon is the same in German and English. Second, we believe that learning language is a lot like learning to run a marathon: It takes training and practice. As Christopher McDougal puts it — humans were born to run, and we believe, like Aristotle, that humans were born to communicate and that's what languages are about. Therefore, Marathon is both a practical and a philosophical idea that we try to incorporate into our school.

Where we’re running

Speaking of marathons, we're busy into marathon season again. In April we ran in Zurich, where the amazing spring conditions helped Christian to achieve a new personal best. This past weekend AnneMarie ran the Rennsteiglauf half-marathon in

the Thüringer Wald, near to where she did her Masters. We hope all of our students who ran the Winterthur Marathon are recovering well.

Mountains Galore

Always looking to challenge ourselves this summer we're heading to the Alps for a bit of mountain running; first stop Liechtenstein. The LGT Marathon with 1800 meters of climb should get us ready for the next three. After running in the small principality we're off to Valais to run the Zermatt Marathon in the Matterhorn;s shadow. Needing more of an adrenaline rush we're going to run the SwissAlpine from Bergün to Davos. The purpose of running these is to get an entrance for the Jungfrau Marathon on September 10th. After

that we'll be back to the city marathons in Berlin and Lucerne to round off the year.

Thank You Sponsors!

We'd like to thank our marathon supporters Zurich4You and Philipp Lohri. If you'd like to sponsor one of our marathons please contact us for more details.

Know what’s happening in Zurich!Stay up-to-date with what’s happening in Zurich and don’t miss a beat with the local daily news from Zurich4You

If you're anything like us you want to know what is happening around you. Being informed about current events in your city and area connect you to your surroundings and make you feel more at home. Aiming to accommodate this need, Zurich4You now offers local daily news. Find out what's happening in Zurich and the surrounding area under: www.zurich4you.ch

For language learning this can also be a great tool. Read the news in one of Zurich’s several dailies and then compare with the English version to see if you understood the gist of the story.

It’ll also allow you to have more of an opinion on what’s happening and engage in conversation with people at work and in your community.

We’ve been nominated and need your votes.Using Web 2.0 for better language learning.

We received great news! Our blog and Twitter feed have been nominated for language lovers prizes at Lexiophile. You can vote for us in the two categories at http://bit.ly/ikAR8B. We'd also like to thank whoever nominated us. It truly is an honour and makes our efforts worth it.

Social Media Workshop in SeptemberFind out how to successfully use social media for language teaching.

Were you too busy to get signed up for the Web 2.0 conference in Wil? Good news. Christian's workshop on incorporating Social Media into your language learning will take place on September 3rd in St. Gallen and will also feature a second seminar based on using Corpus in your language instruction. This event is being hosted by ETAS.

Vineyards, BBQs, and friendsEjoying the summer weather in beautiful Stein am Rhein.

With the unusually beautiful spring we've been trying to get out and enjoy the sun and good company. We've been able to have two BBQs with students in the vineyards surrounding Stein am Rhein.

We'd like to offer a warm thank you to Weinbau Trutmann for the hosting of these events.

We'd also like to announce a special event in August. Discover Switzerland's pearl on the Rhine: Stein am Rhein. With a bus we'll travel to the beautifully maintained historical city for a walking tour, wine tasting, walk to the castle and a wonderful dinner to round off the day with great people. The event will be in English and German and present an excellent opportunity to discover the area outside of Zurich and use your language skills. If you'd like to reserve a space please contact us, as places are limited.
