ST. PETER'S MEMORIAL CHURCH OPENED

The opening of the n e w St . ..Peter's Church, Sault Ste. ]vIarie, was _ to have taken place on the 23rd F'ebrua:ry, and the A rchbishop, who was in the midst of a visitation in the Parry Sound district, came back especially for the occasion. But a very sever e snow storm, lasting throughout the night of the 22nd and t h e following day, filled the roads to such an extent that it _Was impossible to hold the service:

The delayed ceremony took place on the evening of Thursday, lYlarch 9th, and was attended by a congregation which taxed . th e capacity of the building. The service consisted of Chora.l Evensong, with a sermon b y the Archbishop. The Re'V. ~ P. F. Bull, the Rev. B. P. Fulle r, the Rev. W. H Hunter, the · Rev. E. II. C. Stephenson, and the R ev. F. 'iV. Colloton were present, and ass ist ed the V en. Archdeacon Gillmor in the· service.

Several members of St. John's Choir united with the regular Choir of St. P et er's,and a large number of friends from neighbormg parishes joined with St. Peter's congregation on this happy occasion.

The building is a very . attractive one indeed. The interior ilnish is wood throughout. All the d etail work shows the utmost care in finishing, and refle cts the greatest credit on the builder, i\fl' . Ramey.

Esp ecially worthy of m ention are the b eautiful east window, fo rm erly in the Church at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, and the fine painbng of the C rucifixion, for both of which, as well as for much financial assistance, the church is indebted to friends .in England.

CONSECRATION OF ST. SAVIOUR'S, DESBARATS

dHll'ch at D esbarats to take place on Sunday, the 22nd January,

But a fortnight later, On F ebruary 5th, at 11 a.m., the Church of the Holy Saviour was solemnly "set apart from all profane and common uses" and dedicated to the worship of Almighty God. The service was most impressive, and there was a large attendance.

In the after-noon a Confirrllation was held. The Archbishop's addresses on both occasions were listened to with rapt attention.

Great credit is due to the congregation of this church, which, under the devoted leadership of the incumbent of the mission of .Bruce :Mines, the Rev. P. B. de Lom, has not on~y paid off a long $tanding debt on the church, but also greatly improved the interior of the building. Mr. E. R. Leslie Holland, B.A., the , organist, is a tireless ""vorker in the interests of the mission. He has r ecently been granted a lay reader's license, and is doing excellent work.

GRA VENHURST

The services on Easter Day at St. James' Church were w ell ,

attended, and were a source of much encouragement and spirit

ual refreshment. The Rev. Canon Allman, B.Sc., the R ector officiated at four services, and the choir gave an excellent lead to the inspiring Easter hymns. The number of communicants wa la rge and the offerings generous.

On Easter :Monday the aimual vestry meeting was held, and well attended. Dr. C. D. Parfitt, the Rector's Warden, presented the financial statement, which s'howed considerable advance ove r t h e previous year, although the accounts had only broken even. Gratifying reports were also read from the Woman's Auxiliary, the Sunday School, the Junior AuxiHary, and the Parish H ·all Committee. Dr. Parfitt and lVIr. Robert Fielding were r e-appointed churchwardens, and cordial votes of thanks were tendered them, and also the various organizations and officers, for their services in the cause of the Church. A unanimous vote of thanks was also tendered the Rector, to which he replied briefly; and with the Benediction ended a very harmonious and SllCcessful meeting.

'iV e regret to ] earn that the R ev. J. D. Grang'er has been compelled to ask for an extended leave of absence on account of iii-health, and that he and his family have r eturned to England. vVe trust the rest and change may be b en eficial to him, and that he may return full y res tored to h ealth.

R EV. CANON FROST

In th e d eath of Canon Frede rick Frost on the 24.th of April,

] 022 , w e h avc lost ()11l' senior missionary in the Diocese . of Al -goma.

H e was born in England on January 26th, 1851 , and came to Canada fro m Ware, H ertfordshire, in 1872. H e commenced hi s

g'1'eat and long ,vorl<: as lay missionary with the Indians at Garden

River in October of t hat year. H e received Bishop Fauquier's

] icense the follo"\vin g year, immediately after the consecration of

t h c first Bishop of this Diocese . In May, 1877, he changed his

ii eld of work to Sheguiandah, on the M anitoulin Island, with

Indian congregations at that place, and a lso at Spanish River,

Birch Island, Whitefish River, Killarney, Collins Inlet and French

Hiver; and having English congregations as well in that 'widely

extended field. He visited on different occasions and taught the

Indians on Lake Nipigon and the north sho r e of Lake Superior.

He was ordained by Bishop Sullivan, D eacon June 3rd, 1883,

!lnd Priest, October 4th, 1885, at St. Luke's, Sault Ste . Marie. H e

worked in the Sheguiandah field until July, 1897, when h e return

~~1 to Gardell River, where h e lived until May, 1907. He then

gHve up Indian work, and took charge of the beautiful mission

of Rosscau, 'with all English-speaking people, on the l\1uskoka

.Lakes, where he continued until .March, 1918, when his health

broke down, and he retired from active service.

He ' was made Honorary . Canon by Bishop (now Archbishop)

Thorneloe in 1906. H e "vas the author of a most interesting book,

" Sketches of Indian Life," sho~ving very g r aphically the lives alld

habits of the Indians among whom h e laboured. H e was the edi

tor of the Ojibway Hymn Book (S.P.C.K.).

Canon ' Frost was twice married. Of the first family (thrc

sons and two daughters) one son is living in British Columbia,

and ~me daughter, :Mrs. Allen, resides in Sault Ste. JYlarie. Of the

.;;econd family the re survive the w idow, a son and a daughter who

live together at Rosseau, a nd one daughte r, the younger, is mar

I·jed and settled there .

Canon Frost lived nearly fifty years in the Diocese of AI

g~ma, and of that period thirty-five years wer e spent among the lndians. vVith him it was neve r a matter of stipend or position, but entirely the saving and keeping of precious souls. His work among the Ojibway Indians w~s of the best, the truest, and his knowledge of their language was perfect, so that h e could send home into their h earts the glorious truths of Christ. Indeed hIs ];:nowledge of Ojibway was so thorough that h e certainly thought in that language, and expressed himself, and often with conside l'able humour, in the quaint manner of the Inp.ian.

He lies buried in the secluded little cemetery near Rosseau, :tad his grave is surrounded by the thick foliage of the maples ; and stretching away for miles lies the wonderful beauty of the M uskoka lakes. Our dear brothe r has been called home, and we bhall meet him again amid beauty f a r , far g r eater.

Goudreau, on the Algoma Central Railway, is a busy place these days, as important gold discoveries hav e b een made there, and a "gold rnsh" is in progress. It is early yet to speak of the future prospects of the camp, but ' at present everything looks hopeful.

This is part of the wide territorY embraced in the Rev. C. C. S impson's mis sion, apd he has been paying periodical visits to (ioudreau for some time past. Recently he has had the valuable assistance of .Mr. H. Priestly Brock, who has come' from England within the past few months, and is 'a prospective candidate for Holy Orders. H e is at present employed in secular work at (Jaudreau but has, with the approval of the Archbishop and Mr. Simpson, begun regular services and a Sunday School. Both efforts have met with the most encouraging success.

vVork such as this in new places counts for much, in el evating the life of the community, and in laying foundations for the Church in the future.

The H. ev. T. V. L 'Estrange, who has b een doing very s:uccessfulwork in the Port Arthur missions, has b een granted leave of a btience t o unde rtake t emporary work in ~lintreal, where h e is ~10"'\, a"qsisting th e R ev. J . . i\ .. O sborn in his work at St. Columba's.

The H. ev . P. B. d e Lom and :1\1rs . ,d e Lom of Bruce :Mines intend to leave shortly for a brief visit to England. During Mr. de Lom's absence the services in the Bruce Mines Mission will he in charge of ~JL E. H. Rudge of Toronto.
