Northern ExposureContemporary Nordic Arts RevealedMay 5–September 16, 2018
Northern Exposure: Contemporary Nordic Arts Revealed represents a survey of contemporary arts from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the autonomous regions of Åland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland. Conceived as an aesthetic study of how the Nordic character continues to redefine itself within an evolving global context, this exhibition challenges perceptions of form, gender, identity, nature, and technology, and features works by inter-nationally acclaimed artists, including Olafur Eliasson, Bjarne Melgaard, Jesper Just, Kim Simonsson, and Cajsa von Zeipel. Northern Exposure has been organized by the Nordic Museum in cooperation with The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
It’s time for the celebration to begin: the new Nordic Museum
is officially here! We can’t wait for you to come inside—but for Members, the Grand Opening on May 5 doesn’t have to be the first time you do. On April 25, 26, and May 3, we will be holding special previews for our Members.
The Museum will be holding a Members-only open house on Wednesday, April 25, from 12–4pm, and on Thursday, April 26, from 10am–6:30pm. There will be two Member Previews to choose from on May 3: first, a self-guided version between 12pm and 4pm, and then a reception and preview from 6–9pm.
We’re particularly excited to show you Nordic Journeys, our new core exhibition, which has benefited from partnerships with leading museums in the Nordic region. It features nearly one hundred loaned items from national museums in the Nordic countries and spans 11,000 years of history.
At noon on May 5, we’ll host the official ribbon cutting ceremony, which will be attended by dignitaries from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. After the ceremony, our

weekend-long festival of traditional music and family activities will begin. As always, the Museum will be free for Members, but we’re adopting a new timed-ticketing system to accommodate all our visitors, so be sure to RSVP early.
But the Grand Opening is not the only thing to look forward to in May! We’re also launching Nordic Seattle, a citywide, month-long celebration of Nordic arts, culture, and innovation. This has been made possible thanks to a number of key partnerships with leading Seattle organi-zations, as well as support from the five Nordic embassies, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Nordic Culture Fund, and Iceland Naturally. It will feature events of all kinds—from music to an innovation conference, film to literature, children’s events to traditional Nordic dancing—as well as the launch of a new evening series, Nordic Nights, which will be held through May and on select Thursdays for the rest of the year.
Take a look at the calendar inside, and visit our website for more information on each event. We look forward to seeing you!
