Today, Good Shepherd Sunday, May 7, is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.

Hoy, Domingo Buen Pastor, 7 de Mayo, Es el Día Mundial de Oración

por las Vocaciones.

A Word about the WORD Una Palabra sobre LA PALABRA p.6

JESUS THE GOOD SHEPHERD The focus of today’s Gospel is not so much about sheep, or the flock, (i. e. believers), as it is upon the Shepherd himself. In a backhanded way, Jesus explains to his listeners that he is the true shepherd, as compared to all those who had already claimed the title, or scheme to have it. Even during Jesus’ time there were many who claimed to be pastors of the flock, who had no legitimate claim to the title, and used the position for their own purposes. One of the big abusers of leadership of the flock during the time of our Lord was Annas, the High Priest at the time of our Lord’s active ministry and his passion and death. The bulk of the work of the Levitical priesthood was to offer sacrifices and holocausts in the temple. Disturbingly, for too many Levitical priests their “work” was more about making a buck for themselves than it was about the right worship of God. Case in point, in Luke’s Gospel we hear about Mary and Joseph offering a sacrifice in the temple of a pair of turtle doves upon Jesus’ birth. This is the Law of Moses, which is all fine and good. The problem however, at the time of our Lord, was that the only acceptable turtle doves for sacrifice had to bought from the high priest’s own shop in the temple precincts at an exorbitant markup. So, the turtle doves worth free market worth of a few shekels is marked up ten times or more, because only Kosher or Annas’ turtle doves are “approved” for temple sacrifice. At the time of Our Lord, many devout Jews had abandoned parts of the law because they could not afford the marked up price which lined the pockets of the Priests that controlled the temple, and the prayers and sacrifices offered there. Please recall that our Lord at one point just before his passion and death cleared the temple of the money changers. pg 6

The Temple and the worship of God in it had devolved over time to more of a market place than a worship space. Bad shepherds, bad priests, and charlatan ministers where nothing new in the time of our Lord, nor sadly are they in our own day. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us pointedly to be on our guard for these imposters! How do you know the difference between a good priest, and a bad priest? A good priest will talk about, preach about Christ crucified and risen for humanity’s redemption, he will preach the Gospel and the New Testament. (Saint Paul not Father Paul) The topics are often not easy to talk about, nor do they offer a message many want to hear. A bad priest on the other hand will preach something less than the Gospel, or Christ Crucified. They will say things that sound “nice”, or “inclusive” that have no basis in Holy Scripture. I rise early every Sunday morning to prep for Sunday Masses. I will put the TV on and then be just appalled at what passes for Christian worship or on exhortation on the Gospel. Just picture me in my PJ’s watching TV with my jaw on the floor! How can that man get off saying that, the original Greek of John’s Gospel says nothing of the sort! I wonder where that man got his credentials, if he indeed has any?

In our so very modern world, everybody can be an expert about religion and everyone “has their own truth”, so much so, that absolute truth is jettisoned, and true believers are often left mystified and directionless with respect to the practice of the faith. As our Lord said; “they are like sheep without a shepherd!” So please take to heart what Jesus said and rejoice that in him we have a true shepherd. And be on guard for these lions prowling about looking for easy prey. We know that our salvation is in Christ Crucified and Risen, not in Christ for self promotion or profit.

A PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women

to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your

call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy

Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
