Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments

"Get Together" was a popular song in 1967 by the Youngbloods. I was not alive

when the song was released, but it was a song I played frequently learning how to

play guitar when I was younger. The song called for all of us to come together and

"try to love one another right now." It was a song that came out in the Vietnam War

era and during somewhat of a hippie revolution, but perhaps the words belong to no

real moment in time. They are simply the commands of Jesus.

Sometimes we minimize the power of love by cute pop songs and slogans that

mean little without action. However, we can never underestimate the power of

love. Love can tear down barriers between people, change tears to laughter, and

mend relationships torn apart by sin.

No option exists for disciples of Jesus Christ to not love others. Not only are we

commanded to do so, but love is a gift we must pass on freely. If we give of our

time, talent, and treasure, but choose not to love, we cannot claim to be truly

committed disciples and good stewards. As this Easter season draws ever closer

to an end, we must allow our love to bear witness to the source of all love, the

Risen Jesus. This is our calling until, as the words of the Youngbloods' song states,

"the one who left us here returns for us at last."

Yo no

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We are one community nourished and transformed by the Eucharist.

As the body of Christ, we are led by the Holy Spirit to know, love and serve God and one another.

STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD

Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida

Obedience. Sacrifice. Love. These actions speak of the

relationship between Jesus and His Father. We, too, are

called to this way of life.

While some might look at obedience and sacrifice as

difficult and shy away, believing there must be another

way in which to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and gain favor

with our Heavenly Father, a Steward knows the way to

the Father is through Jesus, and the way to our eternal

salvation is by way of the Cross. The Resurrection cannot

happen without first the Cross!

Have you ever been confronted with a situation, a

problem or a rather bothersome or troublesome event that

required your attention and a course of action you would

like to have avoided? You prayed about it. You felt God

was directing you one way, yet within, you wanted to

handle it differently. And you did! Things didn’t work

out like you had hoped, and you were left with feelings of

frustration and dissatisfaction.

Disobedience and sacrifice can both identify the choice to

do it your own way. With a sense of obedience, you

would have taken the path Jesus was presenting to you.

You would have sacrificed your personal agenda of

problem solving and taken God’s advice.

A Steward knows the Father’s merciful love forgives our

self-centered, “I’ll do it my own way” behavior and

allows us that second chance, the next time to do it right.

Thus, we, with greater love for our Father, resolve to

listen more carefully the next time and surrender to the

Will of the Father with its “proper” course.

“When I wake up every morning, I say, ‘Lord, thank you

for giving me another day. Please grant me the grace to

hear and obey you today.’. . . Beginning with prayer

keeps the distractions of daily life at bay, so that we do

not lose sight of God’s plan.”1

Stewardship and Engagement

Obediencia. Sacrificio. Amor.

Pastor’s Message by Father Oscar Martin Picos

We live in a world where the focus is often

on one’s self, rather than others. But faith in

Jesus is the exaltation of "You." The love to

which the Lord invites us is a friendly

relationship both with God and with others.

A life of intimacy with God does not mean isolation from

the surrounding world. The contemplative life accepts the

realities of the world and transforms them through prayer

and reflection in the Lord, just as He taught His disciples.

Many people believe in God, but question their faith for

various reasons. We must remember that it is not we who

have chosen the Lord; it is He Who has called us. The

Christian life is simply our response to the love of God.

Our response to God's love must be love for Him and for

others as friends and brothers. Love erases distances and

establishes the equality that is the condition of friendship.

Jesus has chosen

us for love, to

love one

another, not to

argue, fight, or

criticize. By

living as

Christians, we

can teach those

around us what

love of God and

others means.

For Jesus has

taught us:

“As the Father

loves me, so I

also love you.

Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you

will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's

commandments and remain in his love. I have told you this

so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be

complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I

love you."

Reluctant Catechist Seeks Advice

“I keep thinking there are people more qualified for this

than me. Any advice?”

We have many ancestors in faith who were just as

reluctant to respond positively to God’s call; Jeremiah,

Isaiah and Jonah, to mention a few.

I think reluctance is probably the hallmark of a good

catechist! The reluctance stems from the question: What

am I supposed to do? Proclaim the Good News of Jesus

Christ AND help the children to understand and live the

Catholic faith. There is also an immense richness of our

faith. There is, too, the uniqueness of each child that

makes us think, perhaps, that someone else – someone

other than me – would surely be a more effective

catechist. “Why me?”

(That is what I kept telling myself, but what I kept hearing

was, “Why not?”)

You can be a catechist, a good catechist. I know that

because you have been called by someone who sees in

you gifts that only you can bring. Gifts that are necessary

for the message of Jesus to be heard and understood.

The resources and materials you will be exposed to as a

catechist will refresh and expand your knowledge. You

will have access to others who can help you with your

own questions.

The Saint George parish is looking for catechists, males

and females, teachers and substitute teachers for all

grades, for the 2018-19 CCD school year which begins in

August and runs through May. You don’t have to be an

expert in Catholicism or a gifted teacher; you just need to

have a desire to share your faith and to inspire the

children of the parish. It is a joy to pass on the Church’s

truths to our children so that they too, might live in union

with God.

Act now! Our 2018 CCD season is coming to an end and

now is the perfect time to visit a classroom. If you are

interested in this great opportunity to serve your parish,

contact Jill Luttrell by email at [email protected]

or call the church office at 435-673-2604.

Catequista Renuente Busca Consejo

reacios a responder positivamente a la llamada de Dios;

ser un experto en catolicismo o un maestro talentoso;
