2 Parish Life Weekly Schedule Someone told me there were a few gasps in the back of the church last weekend when I spoke at the end of Masses about the watershed moment

St. Michael Parish is in. I forgot to ask the person who told me that whether the gasps were during the “bad news part” (that the parish still has a $2.3 million dollar mortgage on its beautiful parish campus) or the “good news part” (that St. Ambrose Financial Services and friends of the parish have offered $1,000,000 if over the next four years we can raise $500,000 in debt retirement). Why haven’t you heard of this before? I suspect it was thought “everyone knows.” And while no one likes debt, our annual interest payments had been relatively manageable until the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates a few years ago. Let me anticipate some other questions you may be having: Where did this debt come from? Well, it’s a variety of things. The greatest portion, $1,935,401 of it, dates from the move the parish made twenty years ago to refashion and update its campus. Another $219,607 of our debt is unpaid interest on the mortgage, and a further $159,927 is made up of unpaid Newman subsidy, insurance, missed Diocesan Annual Appeal targets, and Diocesan newspaper subscription costs that accumulated between 2003 and 2017. Altogether it amounts to $2,314,935. What did the original building project entail? The project included demolishing the older portion of St. Michael’s School, renovating the newer portion, constructing a school addition, creating a new social hall and kitchen to replace the original Krasowski Hall, filling the area between the church and the school with a gathering area, and developing a new space for parking. It was a pretty bold project. The school building hosts the major child care facility, 4-K program, and Administrative Offices for the Newman Catholic Schools, and is used by our parish’s Faith Formation programs. Didn’t I already make a pledge for this effort? If you’ve been a long-time member at St. Michael’s, you may indeed have made previous gifts to pay for this work. At the start of the project, $626,000 was raised in an initial campaign and then, in the Diocesan-wide “We Belong to Christ” effort in 2005-2008, an additional $1,100,000 was contributed to reduce the mortgage. What is St. Ambrose Financial Services (SAFS) … and why should they care about our financial situation? Though St. Michael Parish is its own corporation, we work with other Catholic parishes in the Diocese in many ways. All the parishes of Marathon County, for example, help support Newman Catholic Schools. St. Ambrose Financial Services is something like the common “bank” of the parishes. Congregations are asked to invest long-term savings at SAFS, and, in turn, can borrow at favorable rates for a building project or an emergency. It is St. Ambrose, and not the Diocese, which holds most of our debt. The St. Ambrose Board recognizes the spot St. Michael’s is in, and they think it is wise to help us reduce our debt. We agree. I’ll have more FAQ’s next week. My aim here isn’t to alarm you, but to warm you up to participating in one of a whole series of little meetings I’ll be hosting in the next two months to explain the details and see if you can help us meet the challenge St. Ambrose and some of our friends have made. The first fifty invitations are out. Please come and let me talk about it with you. It’s really a good news story. Fr. Mark

Readings for the Fourth Sunday of Easter (May 12) (Acts 13:14, 43-52; Revelation 7:9, 14b-17;

John 10:27-30) At the start of the Church, most of its members were Jewish. By the end of the 1st century, though, the Christian community was primarily Gentile. One attempt to explain how that came to be can be seen in today’s portion from the Acts of the Apostles where Paul’s says that the Jews needed to hear, and reject, the word of God before he and Barnabas could turn to the Gentiles. While there is evidence in some of the letters of Paul, the Acts of the Apostles, and the Gospel of John that the Jewish authori-ties sometimes did harass the fledgling Christian communi-ty, this is no reason or justification for the ongoing, and at times horrific, treatment the Jewish people have suffered at the hands of the Christian community. In the light of this history, the Second Vatican Council affirmed that the Catholic Church “deplores all hatreds, persecutions, and displays of anti-Semitism leveled at any time or from any source against the Jews” (Nostra Aetate 4). Where did you, as a Christian, learn your attitudes about the Jewish peo-ple? How have they changed (or still need to change)?

The Diocesan Bible School launches a new class this fall, and it meets just

down the road at St. Anthony’s Have you ever complained to yourself that you wished you understood the Bible? Well, the Diocesan School of Biblical Studies is welcoming students for its new four-year class that will begin in September. The School meets one Saturday a month, from 9:00 am until 3:30 pm, for nine months of the year, at two locations … and one of them is just twelve miles down the road. The $300 tuition for the first year’s course, “Old Testament Foundation – Genesis through Kings,” includes the noon meal. A de-scription of the full course of study, registration forms, and a calendar for the 2019-2020 sessions can be found in the church reading racks or the parish offices. Not sure if it will help or hurt your interest, but Fr. Mark will be the local teacher.

Upcoming Parish Celebrations of First Communion and Confirmation At Easter Jesus’ disciples were formed as His body, the Church … and so, over the centuries, the Easter Season has become the usual time for the celebration of the sac-raments of initiation: Baptism, First Eucharist, and Confir-mation. At the 10:30 am Mass at St. Michael Parish on Sunday, May 5, and the 5:30 pm Mass at the Church of the Resurrection on Saturday, May 11, we will welcome twelve young people to the Lord’s Table for the first time. As each group is small, it shouldn’t inconvenience regular attenders at these liturgies … so please don’t be afraid to celebrate these events with the families. On Saturday afternoon, May 18th, Bishop William Callahan will be present at the 4:00 pm Mass at St. Michael’s to confirm twenty-nine young people and adults. St. Michael’s is a big space, so you are very welcome to at-tend. Come see the Bishop in action. Do recognize that the liturgy will be a big longer though.

Deacon Peter and Marilyn Burek ex-tend their thanks to all who have supported them in prayer and sent

them cards during Peter’s recovery from his fall and the heart surgery he recently underwent. He is on the road to recovery and will rejoin us at Mass when his health allows.

The Eastside Parishes extends their sympathy and prayers

to the family and friends of Gerald Fox,

who passed away on April 24; and Ruth Schultz, who passed away on

April 30, 2019.

An Invitation to the Final Strategic Planning Dialogue and Listening Session

Your input is needed! Please join the NCS Strategic Planning Steering Committee as we chart the future of Newman Catholic Schools. Our FINAL listening session will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2019, for all stakeholders to join in, lend their voice, and help set that course. This last listening ses-sion will focus on a review of the issues and goal statements developed throughout the strategic planning process. The strategic plan must be bold, innovative and transformational to meet the needs of our students. Excellence anchors the tradition of Catholic education in the Wausau area and at Newman Catholic Schools. The task is to envision what that excellence will look like in the future. Newman Catholic Schools retained the services of Partners in Mission (PIM) to help facilitate the strategic planning process. This effort commenced during the summer of 2017 and is chaired by Mr. Rick Svennes. Planning efforts focused on analy-sis of eight domains:

Academics / Curriculum: Claire Meney (Chair); Emily Bates (Co-Chair) Advancement / Alumni /Communications: Mona Fox (Chair); Candy Thurs (Co-Chair) Enrollment / Admissions / Marketing: Lori Manteufel (Chair) Facilities: Steve Robison (Chair) Finance: Mike Vesel (Chair); Chris Pfender (Co-Chair) Mission / Catholic ID: Paula Damask (Chair). Ecclesiastical support provided by Father Slowiak and Father Kieffer. Student Life / Co-Curriculum: Paul David (Chair) Technology: Jeff Dirks (Chair)

Thanks to the efforts of the steering committee, Newman Catholic Schools is poised to enter a period of growth and re-newal, but in order for that to happen we must work together to align the strategic plan with a vision and mission for the school system. This plan, the creation of which you are vitally important, will provide a clear road map by which the admin-istration, faculty, and staff are able to navigate the next five years. Please lend your voice! All stakeholders are invited to participate in this FINAL listening session as scheduled below. This listening session is designed to gather feedback from as many stakeholders as possible to help inform the final por-tions of the strategic planning process. This final listening session is scheduled for:

Thursday, May 16th, 2019, 6:00-7:30PM Newman Catholic Middle School / High School

The Strategic Planning Steering Committee will take all input into consideration as it makes final revisions to the plan with implementation to begin the summer 2019. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Sincerely in Christ, Rick Svennes Michael J. Martin Chairman President NCS Education Commission and Newman Catholic Schools Strategic Planning Committee

PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle. Be our defense

against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him,

we humbly pray, and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits,

who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.
