The first two readings today both speak of variety and

diversity. Acts tells of the disciples speaking the many

languages of the Earth—addressing each group with the

good news of Jesus in their native language.

As Catholics we have moved from a time when we wor-

shiped only in the Latin language, which we said bound

us together. The problem was that few of us, even

among priests, really understood Latin. Today we cele-

brate in our own languages, but as American Catholics

this creates other problems if we are sensitive. Although

English is the common language of our country, many

people are newly arrived and still feel most comfortable

in their own languages.

Ideally, every Catholic service should have some of the

feeling of the first Pentecost, where each hears good

news in his or her native tongue. What a sign of wel-

come if some of our songs are in Spanish or Vietnamese

or other languages of people in our community! Whether

all of us know these languages is not the point; it is that

we celebrate Christ in whatever language people speak.

Inclusiveness is a great sign of the kingdom and a won-

derful invitation to come and feel at home with us.

The second reading speaks of the variety of gifts that

manifest in our community. We are never alone or soli-

tary as Christians; we are part of the body of Christ.

If I cannot do something well, someone else has that tal-

ent. So as we proclaim our good news to the world let us

show how all gifts are valued and welcomed in our com-

munity. James Joyce said of the Catholic Church, “Here

comes everybody.” That is exactly who Jesus calls us to

be—inclusive and welcoming and rejoicing in all peoples,

cultures, languages, and gifts.

Las dos primeras lecturas de hoy hablan de variedad y

diversidad. Hechos habla de los discípulos que hablan los

muchos idiomas de la Tierra, dirigiéndose a cada grupo

con las buenas noticias de Jesús en su idioma nativo.

Como católicos, nos hemos mudado de una época en que

adoramos solo en el idioma latino, que dijimos que nos

unía. El problema era que pocos de nosotros, incluso en-

tre los sacerdotes, entendíamos realmente el latín. Hoy

celebramos en nuestros propios idiomas, pero como católi-

cos estadounidenses esto crea otros problemas si somos

sensibles. Aunque el inglés es el idioma común de nues-

tro país, muchas personas recién llegadas y aún se sien-

ten más cómodas en sus propios idiomas.

Idealmente, Cada servicio católico debe tener la sen-

sación del primer Pentecostés, donde cada uno escucha

buenas noticias en su lengua materna. ¡Qué señal de

bienvenida si algunas de nuestras canciones están en

español o vietnamita u otros idiomas de personas en

nuestra comunidad! Si todos sabemos estos idiomas no es

el punto; es que celebramos a Cristo en cualquier idioma

que la gente hable. La inclusión es una gran señal del

reino y una maravillosa invitación para venir y sentirse

como en casa con nosotros.

La segunda lectura habla de la variedad de dones que se

manifiestan en nuestra comunidad. Nunca estamos solos

o solitarios como cristianos; Somos parte del cuerpo de

Cristo. Si no puedo hacer algo bien, alguien más tiene

ese talento. Entonces, mientras proclamamos nuestras

buenas noticias al mundo, demostremos cómo todos los

regalos son valorados y bienvenidos en nuestra comuni-

dad. James Joyce dijo de la Iglesia Católica: "Aquí vienen

todos". Eso es exactamente lo que Jesús nos llama a ser:

inclusivo, acogedor y alegre en todos los pueblos, cultu-

ras, idiomas y regalos.

About Our Patron Saint—Benedict the Moor

Immediately after his death a vigorous cult devel-

oped, and his veneration spread throughout Spain,

Italy and Latin America. St. Benedict the Moor

was beatified by Pope Benedict XIV in 1743 and

was canonized by Pope Pius VII in 1807.

The first exhumation of his remains occurred on

May 7, 1592, three years after the Saint’s death, at

which time his body was found perfectly preserved.

Inmediatamente después de su muerte, se desar-

rolló un culto vigoroso y su veneración se extendió

por España, Italia y América Latina. San Benito el

Moro fue beatificado por el Papa Benedicto XIV en

1743 y canonizado por el Papa Pío VII en 1807.

La primera exhumación de sus restos ocurrió el 7

de mayo de 1592, tres años después de la muerte

del Santo.
