Pentecost: The Transforming Power of the Holy Spirit

Pentecost Sunday is the birthday of the Holy Mother Church. The celebration of our birthdays is always a moment of great joy and feast. We have reason to be happy, to celebrate, to be grateful, to feel proud of our Holy Mother Church with incredible gifts and graces. On this day began the powerful public ministry of the Apostles and disciples transforming the hearts of thousands of people.

Easter is the feast of light, of the new life that begins with Christ’s resurrection. Pentecost is the celebration of the outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, its transforming power to change hearts and change lives. It marks the beginning of a new covenant and the inauguration of the Apostolic Ministry of healing, teaching, and redeeming work of the Lord in the most hostile times of the early church.

Our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-11) relates the event of the coming of the Holy Spirit as a great manifestation of God’s power. The noise of the driving wind and tongues of fire are images of a transforming and dynamic Spirit present in the hearts of the disciples who huddled together. The speaking of different tongues that was understood by all the Jews that came to Jerusalem was indeed an amazing miracle, manifesting a deep sense of communion and inner harmony. This is a call for the Church to be a sign of unity in spite of differences of race, culture, and language. The Spirit unites while the devil divides. Therefore, the Holy Spirit casts out the works of division and rivalry in communities.

In the second reading (1 Cor:12) Paul reiterates that by virtue of the coming of the Holy Spirit through Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion there is an indelible mark on our souls. If this inner fire is dormant in us, it’s time to rekindle the fire of the Spirit in the hearts of the faithful. We all drink from the ONE Spirit.

With this indelible mark and seal of the Holy Spirit, we are anointed for God’s mission today and forever. This means that it is the Holy Spirit that leads and directs our life and mission. Have we stifled the Spirit and let our hearts be led astray? If we have stifled this Spirit, it is about time not to miss the wonderful opportunity to set the soul on fire with the Spirit. Therefore, through today’s outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we are truly and fully marked as God’s children. Hence, we are fully heirs to God’s throne and heritage.

Today’s Gospel reminds us of the principle role of the Holy Spirit. These include: advocating, teaching, sanctifying, and reminding us of the things we ought to know. Unless we surrender our preoccupations, humbly seek his counsels, and trust to lead a Spirit driven life, we are deprived of the gifts and fruits of the Spirit. If we humbly say, “Help me because I am lost and ignorant, enlighten the eyes of my mind, O Holy Spirit,” then the Psalmist (Ps 116:7) declares: “The Joy of the Lord is my strength,” and

fullness of my life.

What then will the Holy Spirit, who we have received today help us to accomplish? First, the Holy Spirit we have received today is not a spirit of fear and timidity. Instead, it is the Spirit of self-control and fortitude who empowers us and makes us missionary disciples of Christ as exhorted by Pope Francis. This means to be powerful witnesses of Christ throughout our daily lives and lives of adventure in the Spirit. It is good to

make a daily audit of the working of the Spirit in our lives and allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit.

The season of this world pandemic teaches us to focus on what is truly significant; check our current priorities that do not give us true satisfaction and profound joy. A Spirit driven life will enable us to be transformed individuals, family, and community who bear good fruits that will last (Gal 5:22). The incredible power of the Holy Spirit is given to each one of us to be joyful witnesses of Christ and help others to come close to Christ without counting the cost. It was also given to us to lead us into the kingdom of righteousness, peace, and fullness of life. We rejoice at the wonderful gesture God has extended to us today. Let us be docile to the Holy Spirit and be blessed with gifts of wisdom and fortitude.

Let us lead a SPIRIT DRIVEN LIFE, and lead our Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church with confidence and generosity of hearts.

May the Holy Spirit continue to inflame the hearts of the faithful and renew the face of the Earth.

Let us be ignited and inspired by the Spirit to illumine the world. Peace and Love, Fr. Tom and Fr. Litto

Stewardship Reflection Pentecost Sunday

Throughout our readings to-day, we see the amazing truth that the Holy Spirit gives us gifts and guidance in a very personal way. We are meant to use these gifts to build up the Body of Christ in a way that is unique to each one of us. Our first reading, from the Acts of the Apostles, recalls the dramatic moment when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the apostles. “Suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.”

Notice how personal and individual is this outpouring of the Spirit. This personalized way of “gifting” the apostles allowed them each to reach different people, sharing with them the “mighty acts of God.” Embracing the stewardship way of life means that we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in the best use of the unique gifts He has given to each of us, to accomplish the particular mission entrusted to us. Jesus gives us this mission in our Gospel passage from John. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” But we must not let this responsibility overwhelm us. Jesus Him-self, tells us so — “Peace be with you.” As this Easter season comes to a close, let us be at peace. And let us resolve to lean on the Holy Spirit more and more as our guide through the stewardship way of life. — Stewardship Reflections by Catholic Stewardship Con-sultants

Congratulations!
