time, but we will continue to live-stream all our Masses and Adoration hours.

For Confessions: Confessions in the Diocese of Laredo are suspended until further

notice. For now we can still do a good act of contrition, seek to gain indulgences,

and of course avoid sin. The church office will continue to have staff answering the

phone during regular office hours, but the office will be closed to the public.

Masses to Resume on Restricted Basis June 6th

Bishop Tamayo has announced that on the evening of Saturday, June 6, 2020, public celebration of Masses in Laredo may begin again on a restricted basis. The Dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation continues for everyone in the Diocese of Laredo. Therefore, those who, at this time, do not choose to attend public Sunday Mass do not commit sin. In particular, people with symptoms associated with COVID-19, people with underlying health conditions, the elderly, pregnant women, and those that have been in close proximity with people who have tested positive for COVID-19 should remain at home. We will do our best to disinfect the church after each Mass. Cleaning and social distancing practices continue to lessen the risk of potential contact with the virus, but do not completely eliminate the risk. Those entering the church must understand that they assume this risk whenever they enter a public place. Bishop Tamayo asks that for nine consecutive days, beginning May 29th, all Catholics and people of good will offer prayers for the Church as we seek to safely and prudently return to our parish churches. For the health and safety of all, please observe the following rules at Masses at this time:

•Masks must be used by anyone over the age of 2 entering the church, except for ministers in the sanctuary. The mask should only be removed for the brief moment of receiving Holy Communion.

•Please avoid touching anything in the church. Bring your own hand sanitizer, if possible, to be used whenever necessary.

•Those attending Mass must maintain 6 feet of distance from others, except that those living in the same household may sit together. Also, those who will be receiving Holy Communion can come closer than six feet to the minister for the brief moment of receiving Holy Communion.

•Holy Communion will be distributed at the end of Mass, after the final blessing. People will be called forward row by row. After receiving Communion, they are to leave the church and go to their cars. Please do NOT stay to socialize inside or outside the church.

•Those receiving Holy Communion are strongly encouraged to receive in their hands. Please do not wear gloves while receiving Communion in the hand. Masks should be removed only at the time of receiving Holy Communion.

Se Reanudarán en Junio 6 las Misas con Algunas Restricciones El obispo Tamayo ha anunciado que la noche del sábado 6 de junio de 2020, la celebración pública de misas en Laredo puede comenzar nuevamente por fases, con restricciones. La dispensación de la obligación de asistir a Misa los domingos y días de obligación continúa para todos en la Diócesis de Laredo. Por lo tanto, aquellos que, en este momento, eligen no asistir a la Misa pública dominical, no cometen pecado. St. Charles Lwanga and Companions, Marytrs

The ancient author Tertullian said “[t]he blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.” I am sure many of us have heard of at least one of the many Christian martyrs we have in our beloved Church. We have heard how they gave up their lives for the faith or to save someone else. Today, I am going to briefly mention the martyrdom of Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions. Charles was the Master of the pages under the rule of King Mwanga II of Uganda, Africa. Even though Charles had a prominent position among all the pages, Charles never strayed away from his true King, Jesus Christ! Charles was a convert to the Catholic faith. The missionaries, known as the “White Fathers,” had taught him about Christianity. Once those missionaries were exiled from Uganda, Charles continued teaching others about the faith. He continued preaching the Good News. “Go, therefore,

and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). In 1886, King Mwanga decided to force his Christian pages to renounce their Christian faith and to subject themselves to his homosexual advances. Rahul Rao, in his abstract of Remembering Mwanga: Same-Sex Intimacy, Memory and Belonging in Postcolonial Uganda, writes, “[Mwanga of Buganda] ordered the execution of a number of his male Christian pages [because] they refused his desire for physical intimacy (homosexual acts requested by Mwanga)” (Rahul Rao, 1). Charles protected the young boys and men (aged between 13-25) from falling prey to the king’s sinful desires. Charles encouraged the pages to remain pure and to die for their faith if need be. Charles was sentenced to be executed as well. It is said that when Charles was told by his executioner that he was going to be burned slowly “Charles replied by saying that he was very glad to be dying for the True Faith” (Savior.org, St. Charles Lwanga and Companions, 1). “Then Jesus said to [H]is disciples, Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:24-25). Charles, along with twelve other Catholics and eleven Protestants received martyrdom on June 3rd. When it comes to our faith, we are called to strive to live a life of holiness. In the case of Charles, he had to remain faithful to the True King and not subject himself to the will of King Mwanga II. “Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven” (Matthew 5: 10-12). Even though Charles and the Christian pages were executed, their blood planted many seeds. Today, Uganda is a mostly Christian country. Their influence has helped Christianity so much that now it is Africa which is sending out missionaries to preach the Good News. This is especially true with priests. In countries where there is a priest shortage, it is now the African priests who are bringing the Sacraments to the People of God. “And now these priests are doing what their European and North American brethren did for several centuries: taking God’s word to people across the ocean” (Lekan Oguntoyinbo, African Priests are now the Future of the Catholic Church in the United States, Quartrz Africa, 1). Let us ask the intercession of Saint Charles Lwanga and his Companions and thank God for the seeds they planted for the faith. Let us remember them on the celebration of their feast day on June 3rd.

Congratulations to long-time parishioner Steve Landin, the President of our Parish Council and a candidate for the deaconate, who recently retired as Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Laredo, after serving in that capacity for 12 years. May God bless you for your service and guide your future endeavors! San Carlos Lwanga y Compañeros, Mártires El antiguo autor Tertuliano dijo que "la sangre de los mártires es la semilla de la Iglesia". Estoy seguro de que muchos de nosotros hemos oído hablar de al menos uno de los muchos mártires cristianos que tenemos en nuestra amada Iglesia. Hemos escuchado cómo dieron sus vidas por la fe o para salvar a alguien más. Hoy voy a mencionar brevemente el martirio de San Carlos Lwanga y sus Compañeros. En el caso de Carlos, tuvo que permanecer fiel al Rey Verdadero y no someterse a la voluntad del Rey Mwanga II. “Dichosos los que sufren persecución por hacer lo que Dios exige, pues el reino de Dios le pertenece. Dichosos ustedes, cuando la gente los insulte y los maltrate, y cuando por causa mía los ataquen con toda clase de mentiras. Alégrense, estén contentos, porque van a recibir un gran premio en el cielo; pues así también persiguieron a los profetas que vivieron antes que ustedes.” (Mateo 5:10-12). A pesar de que fueron ejecutados Carlos y los otros pajes de la corte, su sangre plantó muchas semillas. Hoy, Uganda es un país mayormente cristiano. Su influencia ha ayudado tanto al cristianismo que ahora es África la que envía misioneros a predicar las Buenas Nuevas. Esto es especialmente cierto con los sacerdotes.
