14 My brothers and sisters, I myself am convinced about you that you also are full

of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another.

15 Nevertheless, I have written to remind you more boldly on some points because of the grace

given me by God

16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving as a priest of the gospel of God.

God’s purpose is that the Gentiles may be an acceptable offering, sanctified

by the Holy Spirit.

17 Therefore I have reason to boast in Christ Jesus regarding what pertains to God.

18 For I would not dare say anything except what Christ has accomplished through me by word

and deed for the obedience of the Gentiles,

19 by the power of miraculous signs and wonders, and by the power of God’s Spirit. As a result,

I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum.

20 My aim is to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named, so that I will not build on

someone else’s foundation,

21 but, as it is written, Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not

heard will understand.

30 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, through our Lord Jesus Christ and through the love

of the Spirit, to strive together with me in prayers to God on my behalf.

31 Pray that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea, that my ministry to Jerusalem may

be acceptable to the saints,

32 and that, by God’s will, I may come to you with joy and be refreshed together with you.

33 May the God of peace be with all of you. Amen.

God’s Word - Devoted to Him Spring up, O well! Sing about it. (Numbers 21:17)

This was a strange song and a strange well. The children of Israel had been traveling over the desert’s barren

sands, and they were desperate for water, but there was none in sight. Then God spoke to Moses and said,

“Gather the people together and I will give them water” (v. 16).

The people then gathered around with their rods. As they began to dig deeply into the burning sand, they sang,

“Spring up, O well! Sing about it.” Soon a gurgling sound was heard, and suddenly a rush of water appeared, filling

the well and running along the ground. As they had dug the well in the desert, they had tapped the stream that ran

below and that had been unseen for a very long time.

What a beautiful picture this is! And it describes for us the river of blessings that flows through our lives. If only we

will respond with faith and praise, we will find our needs supplied even in the most barren desert.

Again, how did the children of Israel reach the water of this well? It was through praise. While standing on the

burning sand and digging the well with their staff of promise, they sang a praise song of faith.

Our praise will bring forth “water . . . in the wilderness and streams in the desert” (Isa. 35:6), while complaining

will only bring judgment. Even prayer by itself may fail to reach the fountain of blessings.

Nothing pleases the Lord as much as praise. There is no greater evidence of faith than the virtue of genuine

thanksgiving. Are you praising God enough? Are you thanking Him for the countless blessings He has bestowed

on you? Are you boldly praising Him even for the trials in your life, which are actually blessings in disguise?

And have you learned to praise Him in advance for answers yet to come?

You’re waiting for deliverance!

O soul, you’re waiting long!

Believe that your deliverance

Does wait for you in song!

Complain not till deliverance

Your fettered feet does free:

Through songs of glad deliverance

God now surroundeth thee.

Economics 101 Every election year brings a new debate on the economy. If ever there was a subject with wide-ranging, dogmatic differences of opinion, it is the economy. My undergraduate degree is in Business Administration and I never shall forget my first college-level Economics course. There I learned the basic formula of economics that is called the law of supply and demand. It is a simple law. When demand exceeds supply, prices rise. When supply exceeds demand, prices decline. My Economics professor explained it in the following manner. Pretend there is a store that sells apples. On a given day there is a tremendous demand for apples. Outside the door there is a line of forty or fifty people waiting to buy apples. The supply of apples is low. What does the storeowner do? He raises the price of apples because the demand is exceeding the supply. On another occasion, there comes a time when there are a hundred apples in the store and no one has an interest in apples. There is no demand whatsoever. No one is asking for apples. They are about to rot and will become of no use to anyone. So, what does the storeowner do? He puts them on a sale table and lowers the price of the apples because the supply is exceeding the demand. The law of supply and demand simply stated is that when demand exceeds supply, prices go up, and when supply exceeds demand, prices go down. Now, what does all of this have to do with Christ’s feeding of thousands of people on the Galilean hillside? The experience was all about the law of supply and demand. Without Christ, demand always exceeds supply and the cry is ‘not enough!’ With Christ, supply always exceeds demand and the cry is always ‘more than enough!’ Of the thirty-eight parables that our Lord told in the gospels, one-third of them deal with our relationship to our own material possessions. One out of every six verses in Matthew, Mark, Luke discuss the right use of material goods. Our Lord reminds us that our money talks and is saying something about our commitment to Him.
