Stewardship

Reflecting on God’s Word The Most Holy Trinity It is not always easy to be family. Good parents, the old saying goes, give their children roots and wings, a sense of security and freedom to live their lives. But achieving such a balance is o en accomplished only a er years of working at it. Some mes children feel smothered by their parents, that they are trying to control their lives; at other mes, children feel neglected, that they are not important, even not loved.

The readings today remind us that God wishes us to know that we can find our roots in the divine love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and that we can also find our freedom there. Paul’s words to the Romans pick up first on the purpose of the gi of the Spirit that we celebrated last Sunday. The Spirit has been given us to lead us more deeply into the mystery of God, into the love of God, so that we recognize that we are God’s beloved children.

This same message is found in Moses’ words to the people as they are about to enter into the Promised Land. Has anyone ever had a God like our God? Moses marvels. Has any God ever shown a people how dear they are by such signs and wonders as our God has shown us? Moses is moving them to know who they are as God’s beloved family and to “fix in your heart, that the L is God . . . and that there is no other” (Deuteronomy 4:39).

But we are not to stay all curled up in the divine embrace. We have been sent forth to proclaim to others this good news, to

“go, therefore, and make disciples of all na ons” (Ma hew 28:19). We do this when we allow the Spirit to lead us, to guide us in witnessing to God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Choir Fire Singing in the choir gives me the opportunity to express my love for the Lord. It's good for my heart and soul. I sing with others who love the Lord and have a heart of service. The choir Christmas party is the best! I always

have a "reserved" seat for Easter and Christmas. Debbie Laizure

God put a new song in my heart, a song of praise. With His love filling my heart and His hand guiding my life, how can I keep from singing? And, filled with His love, how can I not share it with others? This is why I choose to sing unto the Lord with the choir, that you

might feel His love as I do. Janet Llewellyn __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Wondering Why

Last Sunday was Pentecost, some mes called the Birthday of the Church, because it was through the power of the Holy Spirit that a group of frightened disciples found the courage to go out to the world and preach the good news of Jesus’ resurrec on. In the two thousand years which have followed that momentous day, the Catholic Church has con nued its growth around the world, in good mes and in bad, in peace and in strife, with a fascina ng history filled with both saints and sinners.

Over the next few months in this column, we will look at the

Faith Formation & Enrichment

highlights of that history, how the church grew, how doctrine developed, the challenges faced, and the significant people and events. We will examine approximately one century each week—although there are some centuries that will require two weeks to touch on even the most important events. Obviously, it is not possible in a 600-word essay to cover absolutely everything that took place in a 100 year period, but we will focus on those areas which most defined the church in that period, and the most prominent people.

Just as the Book of Acts, which we have been reading through the Easter season, describes the beginning of the Church through a drama c ac on of the Holy Spirit, and throughout Acts, it is the Holy Spirit who directs and guides the ac on of the Church; hopefully we will see the presence and work of the Spirit in every century to follow, even the most difficult. As Jesus promised, we have never been abandoned.

That first Pentecost was followed by many other days of the Apostles and Disciples of Jesus preaching the Good News of his resurrec on and our salva on. They drew on the promises of the Hebrew Scriptures, showing how Jesus fulfills the prophesies of the Jewish people. Some people eagerly joined this new movement, but others felt that this was a betrayal of their Jewish faith and tradi ons. Even in the first few years in and around Jerusalem, disagreement and fear led to persecu on, first by other Jews who did not accept Jesus, and later by the Romans.

Acts reports that the first person to be martyred for his faith in Jesus was the Deacon, Stephen, who was stoned to death within a year or two of Jesus’ resurrec on. Stephen’s final sermon can be found in Acts 7, and is a powerful tes mony of how all of Jewish history has pointed to Jesus. Among those opposed to Stephen, and par cipa ng in his martyrdom was a young Pharisee named Saul. Saul loved his Jewish faith fervently and saw this “Messianic Movement” as a great threat. A er Stephen’s death, Saul con nued to raid other houses where followers of Jesus gathered, in order to arrest and bring them to trial for blasphemy. Saul was on his way to Damascus in Syria to find and arrest more members of the Jesus movement, when God intervened.

It came as a total surprise to Saul, this encounter with the Lord. The event is described three mes in Acts, each in a slightly different way, but the moment was drama c, filled with a supernatural light, and Saul heard the voice of Jesus saying, “Saul, Saul, Why do you persecute me?” Through this experience, Christ revealed himself to Saul, and instructed Saul to con nue to Damascus and seek out a believer named Ananais. He did this, and a er some instruc on, Saul was bap zed by Ananais. Soon a er, Saul began to use the name Paulus, translated in English as Paul. Paul was to become the one who would bring the message of Jesus to the world outside of Pales ne. In his own le ers Paul speaks of receiving a revela on, and being sent by Christ to be the Apostle to the Gen les.

And, so, the story of the church begins . . .
