OPENING HYMN

M: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the

Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as

his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and

punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways

I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But

trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your

unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and

innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are

his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of

grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith

we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with

you and the Father, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON Joel 2:28-29

I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old

men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both

men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

PSALM 51b Christian Worship Page 87

(5:00 & 7:45) Congregation (Refrain); Vocalists (Verses)

O Lord, open my lips,*

and my mouth will declare your praise.

You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;*

you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;*

a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Refrain

Create in me a pure heart, O God,*

and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Do not cast me from your presence*

or take your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,*

and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Then I will teach transgressors your ways,*

and sinners will turn back to you.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,*

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND LESSON Acts 2:1 - 21

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a

sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house

where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and

came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to

speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under

heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because

each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t

all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our

native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and

Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya

near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and

Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and

perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” Some, however, made fun

of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd:

“Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen

carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the

morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

“‘In the last days, God says,

I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,

your young men will see visions,

your old men will dream dreams.

Even on my servants, both men and women,

I will pour out my Spirit in those days,

and they will prophesy.

I will show wonders in the heavens above

and signs on the earth below,

blood and fire and billows of smoke.

The sun will be turned to darkness

and the moon to blood

before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

And everyone who calls

on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

VERSE OF THE DAY 5:00 & 7:45 (Vocalists)

Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in them the

fire of your love. Alleluia.

GOSPEL John 16:5 -11

I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather,

you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is

for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to

you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in

the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not

believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see

me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands

condemned.

After the Gospel, the congregation says:

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

SERMON John 16:5-11 APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Holy Spirit of God, we worship and glorify you as the Lord and giver of all spiritual

life. By our own thinking and choosing, we would still be lost in our sins, wandering in spiritual darkness toward eternal death. Only by your gift of faith do we now confess that Jesus Christ is our Lord; only by your enlightenment do we know the loving heart of our Father in heaven and his promise of eternal life in Christ. With the Father and the Son, you are one God, one Lord.

We thank you for fulfilling the Word you gave by the prophets and the promise

spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ. You came down on the Day of Pentecost to guide and comfort the apostles, to lead them into all truth, and to reveal your plan to save us. Extend your Church throughout the world by the words we speak and the messengers we send.

We praise you for calling us by the gospel and making us sons and daughters of

God by faith in Christ Jesus. By Baptism you clothed us in his righteousness. You gathered us into his flock, the one holy Christian Church, where we hear the Shepherd's voice proclaiming the forgiveness of all our sins. Live in us, Holy Spirit, and warm our hearts with the fire of your love.

Continue to preserve us in this one true faith by the means you have chosen, our

Savior’s gospel in Word and sacraments. Enable us to present ourselves with all our

abilities as thank offerings to him who sacrificed himself for us.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

Silent prayer.

Sanctify us in body, mind, and spirit to glorify our Father in heaven and to serve our

neighbor here on earth with good works, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will

be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us

our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and

the glory forever and ever. Amen.

M: O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on your faithful people.

Keep us strong in your grace and truth, protect and comfort us in all temptation, and

bestow on us your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and

reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

BENEDICTION

M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another.

Serve the LORD with gladness.

The LORD bless you and keep you.

The LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The LORD look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.

C: Amen.

BIBLE STUDY OPPORTUNITY - For the past few weeks we have been discussing the Lutheran Confession called The Formula of Concord. Pastor Jim Korthals, formerly church history and homiletics professor at our seminary and formerly a long time member of David's Star has been working with Pastor Loescher to present this material in a discussion format. We have a new online host for our video bible study. From now on, if you don't join us live on Zoom you can watch the episode on Youtube. Go to Youtube.com and search Pastor Kurt Loescher and you will find all of the videos there. We will continue to offer the zoom invitation so you can join us live, ask questions, and offer input. By the way, we have been having a few members join us live who have very good questions and participation.
