MISSION STATEMENT St. Januarius is a Roman Catholic community of faith focused on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. We are grateful to those who have built up St. Januarius to be a welcoming, active, and spiritual parish. With the Eucharist and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we strive to use the gifts and talents given to us by the Father to support the lives of parishioners at all age levels and stages of life. We also pledge to live our lives so that through our words and actions all may feel the presence of Jesus Christ in the world today. FED BY THE LORD Jesus' words "This is my body" and "This cup is the new cove- nant in my blood" were only part of his table blessing. Jesus twice said: "Do this in remembrance of me" (1 Corinthians 11:24, 25). This is the good news of today's solemnity. Like the five thousand hungry souls, we are fed by our Lord. This is not food that satisfies for only a short time, until the next meal. It is food that lasts and changes us. It is food for sharing in much the same way as Melchizedek did when he brought bread and wine to the returning Abraham. As children of God's reign, we are blessed to be able to receive and share God's gift. And we do so in the way most appropriate to our state in life--as parents, chil- dren, husbands, wives, or religious. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

MEETINGS COMING UP

Overeaters Anonymous - Tuesday, May 31 Con-tact Sherry @ 412-795-4897 All meetings are held at 7:00 pm in the Church Hall.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to all, especially to those who served in our foreign wars. Thank you for your service. Memorial Day Mass will be at 9:00 a.m.

God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride.

Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters.

Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom

and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

—from Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers

Thank you to everyone who worked the Roadside BBQ and especially to those who worked tirelessly for weeks to make it a reality. Thank you to all who came and enjoyed good food and friendship. There are two weeks in June when I will not be here. We will not have morning Mass during this time. June 6-10 and June 20-24. We will reschedule the Masses and am looking to see if we can even reschedule at either St. John the Baptist or Our Lady of Joy for those specific days.

May God’s perfect peace and love remain with you always! ~ Fr. Ken

THE OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY, MAY 30 IN OBSERVANCE OF MEMORIAL DAY. NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS WILL RE-SUME ON TUESDAY.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The Eucharist is the sacrament of communion that brings us out of individualism so that we may follow Him together, living out our faith in Him. Therefore we should all ask ourselves before the Lord: How do I live the Eucharist? Do I live it anonymously or as a moment of true communion with the Lord, and also with all the brothers and sisters who share this same banquet? ~ Pope Francis Homily, May 30, 2013

Saints and Special Observances Sunday: The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ - This feast calls us to focus on two manifestations of the Body of Christ, the Holy Eucharist and the Church. The primary pur-pose of this feast is to focus our attention on the Eucharist. The opening prayer at Mass calls our attention to Jesus' suffering and death and our worship of Him, especially in the Eucharist. At every Mass our attention is called to the Eucharist and the Real Presence of Christ in it. The secondary focus of this feast is upon the Body of Christ as it is present in the Church. Tuesday: The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - celebrates the visit of the Mother of God, with the child Jesus in her womb, to her cousin Elizabeth, who was herself six months' pregnant with the forerunner of Christ, Saint John the Baptist. Wednesday: St. Justin - Was an early Christian apologist, and is regarded as the foremost interpreter of the theory of the Logos in the 2nd century. He was martyred, alongside some of his students, and is considered a saint by the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Most of his works are lost, but two apologies and a dialogue did survive. Thursday: Ss. Marcellinus and Peter - Though we know very little about these two martyrs under Diocletian, there is no question that the early church venerated them. Evi-dence of the respect in which they were held are the basilica Constantine built over their tombs and the presence of their names in the first Eucharistic prayer. Friday: The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus - The Friday that follows the Second Sunday in Time After Pentecost is the Feast of the Sacred Heart which brings to mind all the attrib-utes of His Divine Heart mentioned above. Many Catholics prepare for this Feast by beginning a Novena to the Sacred Heart on the Feast of Corpus Christi, which is the Thursday of the week before. On the Feast of the Sacred Heart itself, we can gain a plenary indulgence by making an Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart Saturday: The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Refers to the interior life of the Blessed Vir-gin Mary, her joys and sorrows, her virtues and hidden perfec-tions, and, above all, her virginal love for God the Father, her maternal love for her son Jesus, and her compassionate love for all people. The Roman Catholic view is based on Mariolo-gy, as exemplified by Pope John Paul II's Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae. Traditionally, the heart is depicted pierced with seven wounds or swords, in homage to the seven dolors of Mary. Also, roses or another type of flower may be wrapped around the heart
